I recently tried Tam Tam Rice which was honestly really pleasant! I felt like both plates had a lot of variety and provided a nice balance of modern and traditional tastes on. The addition of the mustard greens helped cut a lot of the fattiness and everything was well seasoned. I really enjoyed the fish sauce mix as it wasn't too spicy while being balanced in sweetness and saltiness. My only qualm was that the pork belly definitely tasted closer to thit kho and was a bit salty for my taste. However, the combination of all the elements were overall really yummy! read more

I came here for the first time to try their food. This place is easy to miss. It is sandwiched between My Burma and Mikuni which are two very popular lunch spots. I ordered their Vietnamese option under "Chef Tue's Vietnamese", specifically, "The rich pork belly Tam" which is apparently new. It is braised pork belly with broken rice, pickled daikon and carrots, egg quiche, pickled mustard greens, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes. The braised pork belly itself is delicious. It's tender and flavorful. Not too much fat. The sides however, was too much on the sour side. I'm okay with pickled daikon and carrots, but to add pickled mustard greens, and sour cherry tomatoes was just too much on the sour in my opinion. Could have made the mustard greens on the savory side and left out the cherry tomatoes and it would have been perfect. The restaurant was clean and had a great ambiance. I went there around 2:30pm on a Tuesday which was pretty quiet. There was only one other person there. I actually prefer that than a busy, chaotic lunch hour. The cashier was attentive and took my order right away. Overall, a decent experience. I will definitely come back and try their other dishes. Not so sure with the pork belly dish though. read more

Wow! I went to local kitchens for the first time last week in Sacramento and I was blown away and kept thinking about the Birria tacos. So today on the way home from the Bay area, I stopped in at local kitchens in Davis before all of the crazy traffic on the causeway. I didn't want to be starving sitting in traffic today. I ordered the same thing: Birria tacos, the Strawberry Matcha Latte Boba drink and something new today was the fried cauliflower. The fried cauliflower blew me away! the spices, the flavor, the sauce. It wasn't greasy. It was perfectly fried and the chimichurri sauce.( I think that's what it was that was, excellent.) The Birria tacos were even better than the ones in Sacramento because they had more meat. This is quickly becoming my favorite lunch spot! The only nitpicks I have is with the boba drink. The straws they use are terrible. They break as soon as you insert them into the drink and if you're lucky they will last through your whole drink because they will crack. The other nitpick was only with the boba drink in that I didn't get enough oat milk, but that didn't detract from how great the food was. First time at local kitchen and I ordered two items. First item, the truffle burger. It looked quite small. My first bite, I was surprised how juicy the burger was. The patty itself was unevenly cooked though. Different bites had different results. The onion and truffle sauce pair well together. The sauce was spread inconsistently, some bites were good, other bites had too much sauce. Overall, 6.8 out of 10. Second item, the Nash and Proper chicken fries (hottest). My first bite, I felt like it lacked flavor to the chicken. I thought maybe it was a bad piece, but the next few had the same results. It seems like they slather sauce to make up for it. Chicken is hot but not the hottest I've had and a bit on the dry side. 5 out of 10 for the chicken fries. Service is help yourself at the Kiosk. For introverts or if you just hate people. 10 out of 10. 5 out of 10 if you're looking for human interaction. Works seem busy so if you have a question you might be standing around. We arrived at Local Kitchens at a little before noon on a Monday. The restaurant was empty inside. There are two order kiosks. Our order went in at 11:51 and was ready for pickup at 12:13, so just over 20 minutes. If you put in your cell phone number, you receive a text when the order is ready. I imagine that if you don't have a cell phone you stay inside and they call your name. I ordered the Green falafel pita. It came encased in a box with a zip pull strip to open. It was a bit difficult to open and I'm not sure how they put the food into it. The falafel was luke warm, I was expecting a hot from the fryer falafel, but it did taste good and the cabbage and tahini were tasty. The pita bread was square instead of the traditional round. My husband ordered the Patty melt and he was full after eating just half. There are a number of tables and chairs outside. The weather cooperated, so that's where we ate our lunch. There was a condiment and water area. One buses their own plates. Compost ready containers are used for the food and there is a bin for compost as well as recycling. There aren't a huge number of selections of food in this reimagined food court, but enough to meet most people's wishes. read more

My main purpose for visiting is for the Boba Guys they had. I was very surprised to see it in Sacramento and instead of driving all the way to Bay Area, it's in Davis? I ordered at the kiosk and I got my drink in about 5 minutes, super quick. There's also a few tables scattered around so you can hang out with friends. Small groups of 2-4 is okay, any bigger would not fit at the tables. I went basic with the Strawberry Fields, which is just milk with strawberry puree and boba. Sweetness is just right for me and the boba remained chewy the entire time. I would say this visit was a good choice. I didn't try any food here at this time because I already ate elsewhere, but was just craving boba. I'll need to come back to try the food next time. read more

Many years ago we had lunch at Nopalito in San Francisco after a visit to Golden Gate Park and it remains one of my best dining memories. Every dish was better than the last - and like nothing we had ever had before! So much flavor! So when I saw that Nopalito was at Local Kitchens, I had to order. The menu here is much more pared down and quick dining. I had the chopped salad and added grilled chicken ($13.95) super fresh and flavorful with a bright and zesty dressing on the side. Also ordered the chicken tinga burrito, chicken tinga bowl, chips and guacamole (huge portion for $8.99), rice and crinkle cut fries. I've been to a few other Local Kitchen locations so I knew what to expect coming here. Nothing super fancy about the interior but it's a great spot to have a variety of options to please everybody in the group. I wish they had more seating in here because there is a lot of dead space, but there are tables outside as well as a big grassy area, so it's a nice place to do a picnic. There are no cashiers and you just place your order on a tablet, so you're better off just placing your order ahead of time on the website! We did this on our drive over so that we could minimize our wait time with our two kids. Also the parking lot here is a nightmare, so you're probably better off just double parking at the curb and running in to get your order when it's ready so you don't have to circle around for parking forever. Unfortunately a delivery driver took my order before I could get it so I had to wait for them to remake it. The lady who helped me was very apologetic and was able to get our food out ahead of others since I was waiting. She even issued a refund and somebody from Local Kitchens reached out to give me a refund, including refunding my credits I had used for the order. Aside from the mishap, our food was great. We picked the Big Von pizza from Square Pie Guys which is loaded with pepperoni and the most delicious hot honey drizzle. The pizza itself is fluffy and cheesy! The description and photos were super helpful and helped us determine if we needed one or two (one order was just right for the two of us and our hungry toddler). I will definitely be ordering this one again! We also got fries from The Melt which are always tasty with the seasoning they use, but these ones were a bit more underdone/pale than usual. I appreciated the quick response to the incident with our order and overall just love the concept of Local Kitchens. It brings local favorites (and some that are too far in the Bay Area) all in one spot! read more

They had enough seating for my party of 5 but it was not busy when I came so I am unsure if it gets busy with students at the nearby university. Solid options for the difficult to access restaurants. No longer living in the bay area, Humphry Slocombe isn't accessible to me. However, here at Local Kitchens, I can grab a pint of Secret Breakfast, $12! Disappointments: No option to print receipt, only email. And it doesn't give you a final view of your total to snap a photo for your records. You're forced to enter your mobile #, full name, and it wants your email address. Can't pay cash. Some whack 10% fee even though staff only grabs the sealed pint and hands it to you. Upsides: Good portion for the inflated price. Can circumvent the full name and just enter first initial(.), last initial (.). Air conditioning used inside. Day 2 and I only received one harassing request to rate them. Hoping that giving them my Google number doesn't turn out to be an ongoing hassle. Decent restroom. Wonderful staff member gave us each a plastic bag with some ice and a small sheet of foil to insulate our ice cream for our long drive home. It did the trick on a hot day! read more

I went in for a snack and ordered hummus and pita through the Oren's Hummus menu. It took 17 minutes to receive my food which honestly baffled me because: 1) The menu picture showed a prepackaged hummus container 2) The pita was slightly warm which could have taken 15 seconds in a microwave 3) There was 1 order ahead of me which was ready during the first 5 minutes, which leads me to 4) why did it take so long for my order?! Love the idea of a micro food hall. Very convenient to order and food is served quickly. Great variety of options so there is something that everyone should like. I've tried three different items here. Chicken tender fries: B Big in flavor, loved the hot chicken tenders. Lots of ranch and cheese also make this quite tasty. My main complaint is that I ordered a mild spice level and I could barely handle it. So I would avoid any spice at all if you are sensitive to it. The melt burger: D The burger patty was bland and not great quality so the only good thing about it is the cheese. The bun is too soft, not toasted, and reminds me of a generic store brand bun. Don't recommend this at all. Oren's hummus chicken skewer bowl: C+ Decent, I like all the variety of add-ons you can choose from and are included. Chicken was pretty basic, tasted okay but not super impressive. There's a lot better options for Greek/Mediterranean bowls around. read more

Local Kitchens sounds like a great idea, but the execution is lacking in a number of areas. The concept is this... different local restaurants with different types of food all available at the same location. Pretty sweet! At this Davis location you can find sushiritos alongside grilled cheese sandwiches, alongside Mediterranean style wraps. For people or groups who want a wide variety, this place would seem like the perfect restaurant - and all with a local flair. Unfortunately, Local Kitchens is held back by a sterile environment, average food, and high prices. When you come into the restaurant, you'll notice that there is basically a huge space that is empty. It'd be nice to have tables there, but the only tables available are alongside the wall. There's also no greeter or hostess. You just go to some tablets to put your order in. I'm pretty good at using a self-ordering system like this, but I can imagine that there are those who would absolutely hate it. The food photos on the digital screens look amazing. Sadly though, when you get the items they pale in comparison to the image you see. The portions tend to be smaller than they looked. The food also doesn't have that pop of flavor that you'd be looking for. They all come out rather bland. Whatever local restaurant provided the recipe, Local Kitchens did not do it justice. And on top of that, the food is more than you'd like it would be. The idea here is great, but there has to be some pretty big changes in order to make this a restaurant that would be a hit. read more

I found this place by searching on Yelp. It looked interesting, and I really didn't know what to expect. Basically, it's one kitchen with menu items from various food establishments under one roof. I was pleasantly surprised to see Sushiritto, Pressed, and Humphry Slocombe ice cream - three places I've tried prior in San Francisco. I also heard they had menu items from Senor Sisig at the Roseville location - very cool. I love the concept of bringing unique restaurants throughout the Bay Area without them having their own brick and mortar. Service was minimal, but satisfactory. You order at the kiosk in the front, then they call your name for pickup at the counter when your food is ready... so there's very little interaction with the workers. Food prices seemed high considering the portion sizes, especially for a college town. I tried the Compost Cookie from Milk Bar. Honestly, I wasn't a fan. It was stale and tasteless, perhaps it was an old cookie that had been out for a while. We went in January, and it was freezing cold in the restaurant. We were told they can't warm the restaurant because it would be too hot for the workers in the kitchen. I would definitely return to Local Kitchens again to try other food options, but likely on a warmer day. read more

On a Tuesday night, my job finished up in Vacaville. This gave me a unique opportunity to swing by and try the food at Local Kitchens @ Davis. I have been to all the Local Kitchens restaurants in the SF bay Area, and I have been to the Roseville location. I always pickup my own food, and I always order using the Local Kitchens App. Unlike a delivery app, the Local Kitchens App will tell you if any foods or items are unavailable. In my case, it told me when my food was ready for pickup. Okay, so I ordered "The Sammich" from Nash & Proper and a side of Garlic Parmesan Fries from "The Melt." All these restaurants have one thing in common, they all serve their food hot and fresh. Except at Local Kitchens @ Davis, my order was just warm. I'm not sure why that is. Maybe my order was ready, but no one changed it's status to "ORDER READY". So my food sat in the warmer for awhile. Let me give you a tip, and I hope you never have to use it: If the Local Kitchens App estimates your order will be ready in 30 mins, then if it's late....go in and check on your order. The App will say "ORDER COOKING." But your food might be in the warmer waiting for you. That's because a human has to press a button and change the status to "ORDER READY." I know this from experience. If the food is cooked to order, packaged immediately, and then served to the customer, then no orders should be "just warm." There's some sort of delay in the system at Davis. Maybe it's busy, maybe they're understaffed, and maybe orders are getting stacked up, instead of getting served in a timely manner. Otherwise, Davis is a nice location. You have indoor & outdoor seating, and a spacious lobby. It's near the freeway and has a parking lot. This is a self-service micro food hall which offers a variety of foods. It's cook to order, and it's open to midnight. Just serve the food HOT. read more

Very unique concept in Davis that is open late and has many restaurants under one spot. I've tried most of the brands before, so I was excited to see some familiar names. I thought the idea was cool, but the overall experience was average. The nice thing about Local Kitchens is ordering with ease (online orders or in-person kiosk) and having many options in one location. There's sandwiches, wraps, Nashville hot chicken, sushi burritos/bowls, Mediterranean, and ice cream. However, the ordering is so simplified that you can't modify beyond the options presented, which is mostly a yes/no checkbox to ingredients in your dish. This sucks when you want substitutions for something that is in another item of the brand, more/less of something like sauce or need additional comments to specify certain dietary restrictions. I wasn't really impressed by the quality when compared to the times I've tried these places on their own (Nash & Proper and Sushiritto). They tasted a lot more bland than I remembered. The food also came out soggy and room temperature when we went to pick it up right upon notification of our order being ready. For convenience sake, I will probably be back to try more things, but I'm not sure if my overall experience will change. UPDATE 8/12/22: Tried Oren's Hummus and enjoyed their falafel bowl a lot! A cute idea not well executed. I arrived thinking this would truly be independent kitchens. Instead, you found two self-order screens where there is a wait as customers scroll endlessly through the menu. Food is then cooked in one kitchen by the same staff. Prices are high and portions medium size. Tables are not wiped and left over lunch scraps were still on table at dinner time. Two burgers and fries took 20 mins at 530pm, before the dinner crowd. We were looking for somewhere to eat in the area, almost everything was closed since it was Fourth of July. My sister was craving hot chicken but again, everything was closed. We were rerouting on our cravings and were about to settle for something else until we found Local Kitchens. AMAZING! We were so amazed how they had hot chicken, tacos, burgers, sandwiches, sushi, pizza and boba all in one spot! The employee was very nice and helpful, they have inside seating and outside seating, it's a very open place and the food was amazing! Proper fries are my ultimate go to in town. It's reasonably priced and comes with a lot. Mild+ is a good option for those who like spice. For the 1/4 bird it comes a bit spicier so I usually get mild. Workers are always so kind. There's lots of seating and overall a great place to eat and hang out ! read more

Given the name, I was expecting more "local" kitchens, but really, it is more about a handful of chain restaurants under one roof. Given that it is a new restaurant, I'm actually surprised they did not select kitchens that were not in direct competition with restaurants in the very same shopping center. For example, there is a hummus place, but in the same shopping center, there is The Halal Guys. They have Sushirrito, but Mikuni sushi restaurant is literally next-door. I guess I'm a little disappointed because I expected truly "local" kitchens. We have some amazing restaurants in this area that are not chains. This is very similar to a mall food court. One critical difference you can order from more then one menu at a time. it's basically fast food. It isn't bad. You order yourself using the tablet in the front. There is some indoor seating and wonderful, ample patio seating. Staff is friendly and helpful! read more

Having had experiences with other Local Kitchen restaurants, the Davis location has definitely let me down a bit. I say this with the hope that I will be able to edit this review in the future as the branch grows, however, because overall I have had very positive experiences with Local Kitchens, at least in terms of convenience, and a general appreciation for the food court concept. At the moment, the Davis location simply doesn't have that wide of a variety of options, particularly for vegetarians, beyond Falafel, fast food, or some very sad, unfulfilling salads and wraps. If any of it was particularly noteworthy, I wouldn't have too much of a problem with the small selection, but Local Kitchens isn't designed to specialize. It is much more a take-out, all-around, something for everyone kind of restaurant. Again, I love this system at other locations, but I the concept breaks down if there isn't really something for everyone. A saving grace is that it all runs incredibly smoothly- I've never had an issue with orders taking too long (they are usually done earlier even) and the staff has been nothing but sweet. My partner and I still opt for local kitchens every once in a while when we need a fast, easy take-out option. But at least in Davis so far, it has tended to be a last resort for me, rather than a go-to. I hope I can update this in months to come as more restaurants are introduced to the menu. read more
