While there was great interaction between server and customer. There was absolutely no engagement with manager to customer. Mexican theme with pastels. They have an incredible salsa bar that was well maintained and felt very safe to consume. They also offer indoor and outdoor seating, I'm a big fan of that. The salsas were obviously old, bitter, flavorless, and one of them tasted like literal sugar water (green). The steak was extremely rubbery and flavorless. The chicken tasted like nothing. I had these tacos catered to me while at an event. Chicken Taco - 5/10 Had pico, cheese, lettuce, and tomatillo sauce. The salsa verde was weirdly sweet, which I didn't like. Other than that the chicken was super juicy and tasty. Steak Taco - 6/10 Came with the same stuff. I have eaten at Dos at least 25 times over the years including their burritos, tacos (crispy), nachos. They've never been anything to rave about but for what they are, a very gringo mexican food joint, they are ok. Last night I ordered a grilled chicken burrito to go. The chicken was like rubber. This, mind you, was the chicken breast, not the thighs. I seriously have never experienced chicken like this. Had it not been a to-go order I would have returned it. It appeared to be purchased then thrown on the grill for a few spots to look grilled. The pieces were also quite long. Again, I'm from L.A. I have eaten more than my share of tacos and burritos...I now reside in the bay area and probably eat Mexican at least once a week. We have been Dos Coyotes customers for years. Last two times we ordered "super catch" burritos to find they are almost all rice and guac. I know inflation is hitting everyone but this is downsizing for an upsized price. You really need to rethink your business model folks. You are losing loyal customers. We will pay more for value but not for less. Rather sad for a long time Davis favorite. Follow up. Called the restaurant to express our disappointment with recent "super catch" burritos. The manager apologized and offered a refund and 2 free meals. We appreciate that gesture and good customer service. Our hope now is that Dos rethinks how they are slimming down but costing up their items. I've been eating at this location since high school, so we're talking 20 years of customer loyalty. The restaurant is incredibly consistent in term of quality, and that is saying something. Some may not appreciate the unchanging menu, but I love that I can always count on my regular favorites, but I also enjoy trying their seasonal items as well. My go-to these days is the Howlin Tostada, and though the price has inflated the portions never have. I can usually get 3 meals out of this salad, and I love the beans it is served with. I'm also very picky about my iced tea, and I love the black tea they serve. I've now been to New Mexico and can totally appreciate the theming of the restaurant, which gives big Albuquerque and Santa Fe vibes. There's lots of hard surfaces, so when it is full it can be quite noisy, but other than that the interior offers plenty of seating options, self-service beverages, and the crown jewel: their salsa bar. The sweet tomatillo salsa is my favorite and I have never found anything like it at another tex-mex restaurant. As mentioned, though the restaurant has mostly unchanged in 20 years, one area that had changed a lot are the prices. Some items I feel are no longer justified, like the Border Burrito, which I used to enjoy with chips and salsa for well under $10 in college. However, I do think the portions on some items are still generous despite the increased cost, like the aforementioned salad. If you are willing to go for authentic Mexican rather than Tex-Mex, there are lots of restaurants nearby that offer the same quality food or better for far less. 4 stars since the restaurant is not a great value anymore. read more

Dos Coyotes is the place I go when I want to treat myself to a great meal. It has been a consistent favorite. I've been going here for more than 20 years, so it's probably time to do a review. Basically, this place has so much to offer -- if I was to classify the style of food, it is like Mexican food with a California flair. One of my favorite burritos is the shrimp burrito. They have a lovely sauce in that one. They also have lots of salads. And don't forget their crazy big salsa bar (6-8 different salsas at a minimum) -- you must try the mild green salsa (sweet and just a little spicy). Today, I went in for a salad and wanted to get a Yin-Yang salad (one of my long-time favorites). However, they no longer offer that salad. So I went with the fajita salad with steak instead and that was a treat! Lots of large roasted veggies and avocado. It was so big and filling I couldn't eat the whole thing. I am mourning my beloved Yin-Yang salad, but the fajita salad was so good, I can live. Dos is a Davis staple for a good reason. If you have family coming in, this is just a fun place to go with cool decor to boot. The service is always fast and courteous. Having grown up in Davis, I have been to Dos Coyotes countless times, mostly at the Marketplace location in Davis, although I have also been to the location in South Davis. Decided to finally write a review for this place, as my family just went back there this past weekend. My dad ordered the Yolo Mango Chicken Burrito, my mom ordered the salmon burrito, my partner ordered the Howlin' Tostada with salmon, and I ordered the salmon burrito with double the salmon. My dad loved his Yolo Mango Chicken Burrito, especially with the balance between the sweetness of the mango salsa and the spicier salsas he added. My mom always orders the salmon burrito and likes that it can be ordered mild, with the salsa on the side. My partner loved the Howlin' Tostada, although she felt the salmon was a little more heavily seasoned than the salad, so the flavors were slightly imbalanced between the two components. I thought the salmon burrito was a great deal when you doubled the portion of the salmon. My only wish was that the included spicy salsa could be a lot spicier (but that's okay, because I added tons of salsa from their salsa bar) and that the tortilla was a little uninspired and soggy. If they seared this burrito on the grill to crisp up the tortilla and added spicier salsa, it would be incredible! Recommend Dos Coyotes as a good restaurant to go in Davis if you're looking for an alternative to Mexican food, and have a group of eaters with diverse tastes. read more

Our two rescue Miniature Pinschers, Max & Margo love Dos Coyotes as much as we do. When i first went here in 1990, it was just a sliver of a space long and skinny and 2 burritos that stood out back then- the Ranchera and the hearty border burrito. The prices have changed a lot but not these classics. The luxurious burrito was to have it there & wet. The cashiers are very friendly, patient and helpful workers. you can mention some thing in The pretty much figure out all the options you could be talking about which is nice as the menu has expanded greatly and you might not see some old-time favorite favorites listed on the board, but it is maybe on the menu . I always like seeing the grilling guys behind the scene because it shows you what they're working on and "fresh off the grill." Maybe the one thing I do miss is literally grilling and then chopping it up fresh so I'm not sure how much they might grill , on the spot or ahead of time on my most recent trip it was not busy and I feel like maybe my stuff was kind of already cooked so the difference of having that fresh grilled and chopped up because they're so busy does have a factor in the taste maybe it's more like a three if it's not busy and definitely if before when it is busy. Seems like there are other locations now, which I have still not tried because to me this is the classic, even though I would be happy to try a Dos in a different city. Seems like from other reviews that the other locations might taste better. I know this location is far from campus so it's hard to discover and there's other ones closer to the school. Nevertheless some of my previous reviews of Dos have been quite harsh but management fixed things up and I can honestly say that it's quite top notch. To get five stars out of me at a walk up to order seems to be a bit too many stars but in all honesty I wholeheartedly recommend this place for a quick meal. I've been sampling the menu, tonight I had the sizzling fajitas with a skewer of shrimp. Granted they seem farmed but where do ya really think you are. Julie had the chicken version. I love the options here! It allows for a vegetarian / meat eating family to eat out together and have options! Their salads are huge and super tasty! The salsa bar is great, seems to be refilled regularly, definitely recommend both their fresh and roasted tomatillo!
