I am not sure how anyone is giving this place less than four stars! Our experience was great. The giant salad was a steal for under $13! I got a delicious tortilla, grilled vegetables, avocado, beans, and they were even nice enough to swap out the dressing for me. Plus, the amazing salsa bar. It was definitely enough for two meals. The staff was super kind and attentive (both days) for being an order at the counter type of spot. They came and checked on how we liked our food and came back with my box in moments. The chips were the only underwhelming aspect, but with all the food I had, I didn't really miss them. I wish they would open a location on the Peninsula! The restaurant has a cozy, welcoming vibe and a large menu with plenty of options. Even though it's often packed when I pass by, there was no wait when I came later in the afternoon. Parking was easy since it's in a shopping center, which is always a plus. The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful with suggestions. It was a chilly day, so I was craving something warm. I've had hit and miss experiences with those coyotes in the recent years, but Olin completely turned it around for me and now I feel like I wanna be here every day. It's very clear that he loves his job, he loves the restaurant, and the crew he works with. We went with his recommendations on various plates and cocktails... They were all winners. We came to share some tacos a la carte and ended up getting the most amazing meals. Oh and those drinks! I had no even real awareness of what was actually stocked here. I used to frequent the one over by the mall so I jumped at the chance to visit this place when we were passing through and hunger pains hit us. It's a fast food Mexican chain in the Davis area. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. You order, take a number, and find a table. I don't think the seats and tables are regularly cleaned, so you might need to do that before taking a seat. We ordered the Hank's cubano with pickled jalapeños on the side and the Border burrito without beans. Rice and beans are in majority of the menu items here which is disappointing. Unless you're ordering a plate, Mexican fast food joints in San Diego wouldn't serve it with rice and beans. Seems like a way to fill the burrito with ingredients that aren't meat.. 1/5- Chips weren't thick and fresh, and the hottest salsa was just spicy and lacked in flavor. 3/5- Hank's cubano was a solid 4 with mustard, but it doesn't taste great without the mustard. Therefore, I knocked off a point. The menu said it's supposed to be a green chili jam but I'm pretty sure it wasn't? I also didn't taste all the distinct cheeses. 2/5- Border burrito was meh. This is a great place to come with a large group! We dropped in on them right when they opened on a Friday with my daughters soccer team, who was in town to play a soccer tournament. This review is for Dos Coyotes' catering service. We had a grad student picnic for our small program of about 20 people and many folks had dietary restrictions (vegan, vegetarian, no red meat, no dairy, no added sugar, no nitrates, etc.) A HUGE thank you to Joshua for helping us figure out which options were best suited for each set of dietary restrictions! The event was a success and everyone was able to enjoy the food. We called in the night before our event and set the pick up for the following afternoon. The majority of people got the Border Burritos, which were delicious! I got the Border Burrito Bowl (a gluten-free option, without the flour tortilla). Several got the vegetarian option, the Southwest Burritos (Vegetables and Rice) and for the vegan option, we did the Southwest with Refried beans. For the very restrictive no red meat/no dairy/no added sugar/no nitrates, we did the Salmon Spinach salad (all extra dressings/sauces on the side) and that person was happy as well. This bowl is really yummy and flavorful the sauce helps blend this combination of food really well. Tres Steak Tacos -- steak was cooked well but it felt like it lacked some salsa. I took some salsa from salsa bar and this made the tacos tastes less bland. Overall still yummy and better to eat when you add salsa. Their Border burrito is a solid hit, stuffed with plenty of grilled meat, rice, beans, guac and sour cream. Paired with the chips and unlimited salsa and you're in for a great meal every single time. So I've been eating at this specific dos coyote since 2001 all four years of college living at Sorento eating at least 3x a week getting the same salmon burrito, and up until now I get one every time I pass Davis and loving it. Just went yesterday and hugely disappointed as the burrito size decreased at least, at least 30% if not 40%. Trust me I know this burrito in and out. It use to be so big and stuffed, now it's like a churro, slim and small, What happened?? I get inflation in price but don't skimp us on the food man. I came here with my sister and mom We order 2 Yucatán chicken salads The chicken was so old , dry and cold As soon as they gave us the food we noticed the chicken , I asked one of the team members if they could give us fresh chicken or make us a new salad, the employee did not even apologize or nothing she had no empathy at all , and she she said if I wanted new fresh chicken I needed to pay for it!! I love Dos Coyotes Border Cafe! And here is why! The food, the margaritas, service, atmosphere and open 7 days a week. For me, it is that simple. Food: Fresh, fresh, fresh! Healthy choices along with the not so healthy:). The only Mexican restaurant I know of where I can order a whole wheat tortilla. I pay an extra dollar for it but it is worth it to me. So many item choices. Almost could make your head spin. And, always several seasonal specials from which to choose. Summer specials on my photos right now. I have not run across any Mexican restaurant which offers so many salad choices. All with a Tex Mex flair. You would be hard pressed to not find something on the menu which would be to your liking. So is the food authentic? What is authentic Mexican food. I could eat at 3 or 4 Mexican restaurants in Davis/Sacramento, and around...everyone's opinion would be different. I happen to love the fresh food served at Dos Coyotes Border Cafes. Price point/Reasonable. Margaritas: My bad because I never tried the margaritas until a few years ago. I just assumed they could not possibly live up to my high standard. Wrong! Dead wrong. Delicious! All margaritas are premade using only Hornitos Tequila (one of my favs). Unlike many restaurants or bars, I know the margarita is always going to be wonderful here and not left to chance by the whim of the bartender making it. The employee simply has to pour the margarita mix into the glass full of ice at Dos. And like the food....seasonal specials with the margaritas. Right now along with the traditional choice you could have a watermelon margarita. Yep...and salt or no salt or even light salt! Always accomodating. Many beer choices and some decent wine. Price point/Reasonable. Salsa Bar: So many different choices. Big, fresh bowls of mild, medium and hot! And other items included too. Something that looks like thin gualcamole but is not and a couple of other interesting looking bowls. They keep the salsa bar clean and refreshed and on ice!!! Service: OUTSTANDING. That's right. All caps! I truly have never had a bad customer service experience. Amazing...I know! And I'm talking at any of the locations to which I have been (Davis, Sacramento, Folsom.). Maybe the owner puts the fear of God in them...lol...I don't know...but it is one of the best restaurant chains for outstanding customer service! (I said "chains" because there are quite a few in the region. But each one has the same high standard as the two in Davis which I frequent on a regular basis.). Atmosphere: I love the Davis Dos Coyotes both offer patio dining. Both of the Davis restaurants are unique in their seating as one is a bit larger than the other. But pleasant, open and great decorations. A real Tex-Mex feel. Which is what the food is billed as...Tex-Mex! And it does get busy during peak times...really busy! But that just reminds me about how good the food is and that other people think so too. Families, singles, groups...you name it. They are all eating good in the neighborhood....lol. I am not an adventurous eater. And I like what I like and will go to the same place and order the same items I like time after time. Whether it is local eating or out-of-town eating. This along with two other restaurants in Davis...are my "go to" for local eating. BTW...how did the owner come up with the perfect name for a TEX-MEX place....well his name is Bobby Coyote. The food here is pretty consistent. Average Tex-Mex type of place but nothing bad tasting. They have a lot of options for vegetarians or vegans. They can make anything on their menu into a bowl, instead of burrito or taco. I like the salsa bar. There's almost always a table inside or outside. My kids likes eating here bc they have a good kids menu, and if sitting outdoors they can run around after they're done. I have probably ordered from Dos Coyotes more than I have from any other restaurants this pandemic. Their food isn't the best thing I have ever had, but it's filling, gets delivered relatively quick, and is consistently tasty. I usually bounce around between their "Border Burrito" and their "Ranchero Burrito Plate" which are both about pretty equal in my book (though you do get more food when ordering the burrito plate). Though last night I decided to be ambitious and order their "Navajo Nachos" and I have to say I fully expected for them to arrive already soggy and falling apart - but to my surprise they were perfectly crunchy and frankly delicious. And while it has now been a long time since I have interacted with any of the crew members who work there, the many times I had gone before their team had always been super nice and accommodating. So, Dos Coyotes is tucked away in a corner of the shopping mall between a sandwich shop and a pet store. When you first walk in it's a little dim and dark, but then opens up to a larger dining area. There's also outdoor seating which is nice. The highlight is the salsa bar which as a wide assortment of unique salsa's. The decor feels a bit dated like a bad acid trip from the early 80's. Maybe that's their vibe but it was a little too Miami Vice meets Trailer sitting in the New Mexico desert vibe for me. So, we ordered the green Chile enchilada with chicken and a side of refried beans and rice. I thought the presentation was nice along with a sprinkle of chips. The flavor was good maybe a little too salty but good nonetheless. So, my wife noticed a little old lady chowing down on a soup. It looked good so she went and ordered the soup as well. Unfortunately, this was a disappointment. All the veggies were soggy to the point they just fell apart. The flavor was also off. It didn't taste like tortilla soup. Instead, it was very oily and had a base more akin to the abondigas soup. Long and short we were very disappointed with the soup and we're let down. So, if you're looking for a QSR that has decent service, ok food and a great salsa bar maybe this is the place for you. read more

A couple nights ago I asked my husband "what's the one restaurant you'd go to in Davis if you wanted to guarantee it would be good every time" we both agreed on Dos! They're handling the pandemic so well! We call to order and pay on pick up, we love having it at home or at the park nearby but man do I miss the slaw and pickled veggies from the salsa bar!! I really hope that salsa bars are able to come back in a post Covid world! It was my absolute favorite! My absolute go to here is the Yolo mango burrito, recently I started swapping out the chicken for black beans! It's super tasty this way! Occasionally I'll literally just order the rice and beans for my lunch! $6 and I'm full!! Oh and on a day that I'm feeling really naughty I really love their chips!
