And what is different about Dos than other "mexican" eateries, is they have their own swing/flavor on their food. For example, their salads, you won't find them at other places, loaded up with so many fresh & delicious ingredients. Nor have I ever seen "potato skin pork tacos". Which by the way are divine. First of all- if you want Mexican food, don't go here. Go to one of our many taquerias in town. The food here just doesn't fall into that flavor profile for me. It's kind of obvious when you walk in what type of food they serve here and what the targeted clientele is. If you come in her looking for taqueria-style food and end up disappointed- that's on you. Sorry, not sorry. It's still good food. If I had to describe it I would say it tasted "clean" and "wholesome." Today I ordered a salmon burrito. I paid for double salmon. Requested no cheese and light on the white sauce that comes in it. Whoever put my burrito together made it so that the top half was all rice and the bottom was all salmon. I was starting to womder if they forgot my salmon. I wish the ingredients were evenly distributed. That would have made my burrito almost perfect. I unfortunately filled up on the rice half before I got down to the salmon. The burrito was flavorful enough. I'd get it again if I'm ever craving a salmon burrito. In my attempt to help you from showing up at the wrong location because "Meet you at Dos on Cowell Boulevard" sounds a lot like "Covell Boulevard" on a bad phone connection, this is the one near Rite Aid. Comparison: In the Tex Mex versus New Mex food battle, Dos Coyotes is better than Chevys for the main dishes. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food in Davis, go to Taqueria Davis (L Street) or Davis's Piñata Mexican Grill (1st Street). Tips for First-Timers: 1. They can easily make any of their burritos, salads, or tacos vegetarian. But they always recommend the Howlin' Tostada for vegetarians. Creamy anasazi beans, spicy pumpkin seeds, cotija cheese, and dried plantains with an orange-chipotle dressing. It's a big salad -- more than enough to share with 3 people. If you order it to go, make sure to ask for the dressing on the side or it quickly goes from "howlin'" to "a faint shriek." This salad is made for in-house eating. It does not travel well. 2. There are 9 Northern CA locations, but if you're a Dos Coyotes purist, the first Dos opened in The Marketplace (where Jamba is) in North Davis on January 5th, 1991. 3. Salsa bar (Grade A) I wish I could get a straw and drink the medium green salsa. It's a slow torture trying to scoop it up fast enough in that little wooden spoon while the line of people hurry you like you're playing Guy Fieri's "Minute to Win It" gameshow. There are also seasonal items. In the Fall, you'll find a pomegranate salsa. Overall food thoughts: I don't give this place 3-stars because the sides push down the food curve. The main dish weighs more on the overall rating and it gets 4-stars on its own, but because the food consistency tends to be sporadic and we've been disappointed too many times on to-go orders, this is reflected in the overall stars. Since we ask for "only rice" on the side for our meal, sometimes we get home and there is "only rice" in the burrito. Other times, they don't even pay attention to our specific food requests and just make it as the menu states. It's 50-50 when it comes to consistency. Plus, since we ask for the burrito to be cooked longer and have a hard cheese crust, this is hit or miss too. When it's a hit, it's a grand slam. When it's a miss, the burrito lacks any textural elements and this affects the overall taste. Luckily, since I am a regular to this place and my order is so oddly specific, the employees recognize the order and understand how I like it. But, if you happen to get someone that doesn't understand, show them the picture of a perfectly crusted ranchero burrito. Overall restaurant observations: 1. Parking. Never a problem. 2. Outside seating. Plenty if you want it. I just don't like being too far away from the salsa bar! 3. Bathroom. No towels in the bathroom so make sure to bring napkins from the restaurant so you can turn off the water, dry your hands, and open the door without having to touch anything before you eat. 4. Second time this year we came home to find incomplete order. Im so sad! They are good staff and food is good. That said, tonight's rice was so bland and colorless. No Mex flavor at all! $54 for 1 cream soda, 2 Rancheros burritos plates, one chicken navajo nachos (which they forgot the chicken, guac and sour cream) and a Shrimp burrito which wasn't in my bag, but i looked in and saw just the three plates. I swear it can be 3 meals easily. I can never finish it in one sitting, that's for sure. They have a special seasonal menu and everything is worth a try. Seriously, if I wasn't craving for their burritos, I'd probably be trying all the stuff on the seasonal menu. Things on the menu range from gumbo to enchiladas and burritos. My mom had one of the green chili burrito and swears it it was one of the best she's tasted. I can't say the same, but I can say that it was delicious. What I love about Dos is their selections of salsas. They have a large selection ranging from mild Pico de Gallo to a super spicy red salsa. I like combining different ones and throwing them on my food. The staff are amazing here. Everyone is super friendly and attend to customers often. Even though soft-drinks are self-serve, my mom and I were once asked if we wanted refills on our water. It's the little things like that make this place a place I'll be coming back to. Overall, I'll definitely be back here, especially since I live so close by. The location is great for those living in South Davis, since it's right in the Safeway plaza and there's now a place for dessert with Teabo two doors down. I don't know if it's because I've known about Dos for over 10years that I'm still constantly wanting my Mahi Mahi burritto lite on white sauce. My siblings went to UC Davis which introduced me to Mahi Mahi as a high schooler and it was a commodity that couldn't be missed. But as an undergraduate student the necessity for a Dos fix was unimportant. It was when I was away from Dos that I crave it so dearly. All my friends and family know if they drive by Sac or Davis they should buy some and bring it back home. I have to say though that over the years Dos has expanded from its 3 store restaurant to over 6 in Northern CA. And during the expansion I have seen a change in the amount of fish in the burrito and the size of the burritto. Some people might ask why Wahoo's, Unamas, or Rubio's fish taco or another franchise's fish burrito cannot compare. I can't explain it, I just know that as simple as the ingredients are, Dos has not been replaced in my heart and I have not found a comprable competitor. Dos makes their tortilla chips fresh and come with every order, don't forget to try the salsas. Don't come here expecting authentic Mexican food or you'll be disappointed. This is definitely Tex-Mex, and delicious at that. Santa Fe Nachos are awesome. They have a chipotle chile sauce which is sweet, not spicy or smoky like I was expecting. The nachos are piled high with carnitas and cheese. Definitely a filling dish and can be eaten alone as an entree. We also tried the steak burrito and paella burrito. Both were pretty good and worth trying. The steak burrito doesn't have any rice in it, unlike the paella one. They have a huge variety of fresh salsas in the salsa bar, and they're all tasty! The vegans and carnivores in our family all agree this place is delicious! The shrimp tacos, crispy beef tacos, and border chicken burrito were large servings and tasty! We loved the salsa bar with lots of varieties to taste. The guacamole we added as an appetizer was delicious too! Here is their seasonal menu. The Tewa Tacos were served with pomegranate and pumpkin seeds, and kale. I got it with no cream or cheese to make it vegan, and the filling of squash and beans in the blue corn tortillas was delicious! We love that the sides of black beans and rice have flavor but aren't too greasy or salty like some places. The only drawback is that we were there on a rainy night and it was freezing! Dos, I really want to hate you because you aren't a true Mexican restaurant... but I still keep coming back. I have lived in South Davis for my whole UCD life, so this place was right next door to me. Their shrimp burritos used to be AMAZING, but sadly they changed and aren't worth getting anymore. What do you get now? The paella burrito. Adobe Salad with Chicken. It's basically a burrito stuffed with everything good the world has to offer and also a plate of chips. The adobe salad is one of the largest salads I have ever eaten. I might be skinny, but I can DESTROY food in minutes. Yet, I normally have to split this salad into a 1 and a half to 2 meal kinda ordeal. If you have leftovers, save it and wrap it in the giant tortilla it is served in to get a tasty burrito. I've been going to Dos Coyotes in Davis since it opened in South Davis. It's definitely a nice restaurant to eat at with a lively atmosphere and friendly service, but the food can be hit or miss. My personal favorite things to get at Dos are the salads. These salads are HUGE with some tasty ingredient combinations. As mentioned already in the reviews, you could easily split a salad order with another person. IT'S REALLY BIG. The salad that I go for when I visit Dos is their version of the Caesar. It, like all their full-sized salads, sits on top of a flour tortilla. The dressing they use on it is creamy with the perfect consistency. Instead of croutons there are deep fried tortilla chips that are oh-so-amazing when you get a bite with one! If you want a little heft to the salad, tear off some of the flour tortilla base and make yourself a little wrap. While the salads are loaded with size and flavor, some of their other items aren't so much. Being a Tex-Mex restaurant, you'd expect their burritos to be top-notch. I find them to be on the less-flavorful side. They're just a bit too bland! If I had to choose between a Dos burrito and a Chipotle burrito, I'd go for Chipotle each and every time. Even the presentation of the burrito leaves more to be desired. The difference between it and the salad is night and day. When you see the salad, you say 'wow!'. The burrito just doesn't elicit that same reaction. All-in-all, Dos is still a solid choice if you want some Tex-Mex in Davis. I definitely recommend that salads there, but for everything else, temper your expectations. read more

I've been dining at the North Davis Marketplace location since 1993 but tried the newer South Davis Dos recently. Love it! The food is just as good, if not better. Great service and the same delicious salsa bar. My go-to is the chicken ranchero burrito a la carte with sour cream. It is so good! The chicken had an amazing char flavor and the sour cream tops off all this goodness. If you run out of chips, feel free to ask them for more. They'll usually give you a free refill. Located in the Safeway shopping center. It is across the parking lot next to the coffee shop. Conveniently off highway 80. I can't wait to go back! read more

We love Dos Coyotes! We've been multiple times and have had so many of their wonderful menu items over the years including fish tacos, taco salads and burrito bowls. The outside seating is a hit with our family as well. I finally had to write a review because last month I mistakenly left my purse at the restaurant. The manager personally got in touch with me and even came to my house to return the purse to me. Everything was still intact just like I had left it. I love Dos even more now! I always love Dos. It never disappoints. But, last night, the guacamole was more like avocado salsa. It was clear they tried to make the guac go further and added a bunch of pico de gallo. Been coming here for years and the food was still great but the service has gone way down. The server did not seem to understand the menu well and was not helpful at all, and ended up getting my order wrong. When I politely told her that I got the wrong item, she dismissed it and said there was nothing that she could do. When I asked for an extra bowl, they refused to give me one, even though there was a whole shelf of clean bowls. Instead, they gave me a wasteful to go container. When I went to put salsa on my food that was in the container they gave me in order to save one-use cups, the manager rudely told me I could not. I would have understood more if she had approached me politely and gave a reason but all of the workers there and manager came off as rude. Disappointing considering their food is so good. One of our favorite restaurants has really failed us on our last few visits. We brought guest with us tonight and all the orders were very incorrect. I ask for corrected items, but the manager wasn't there to approve the replacement, so I paid again! The second round came out and 2 of them were wrong again and some items never came! Dos Coyotes earns four stars for its salads, the creamy green salsa at the salsa bar, and value. I wouldn't classify this as "authentic Mexican" as some other reviewers complained it didn't meet the mark... but if you understand why you're eating at Dos (the salads!) then you'll enjoy it. I've tried the tostada salad, Yucatán, yin yang, adobe and maybe one other salad... each is humongous and delicious. You can more than split a salad between two people and be full. At around $10 a salad, this is an extremely affordable meal you can feel beautiful after eating. Even if you eat the tortilla the salad is resting on... Onto the green salsa.... I can (and do) drink this salsa. I don't think Dos Coyotes anticipated one person would ever use as much salsa as I do. You're welcome...! I often order a side of chips to avoid looking like a weirdo drinking salsa out of a cup. But sometimes I just drink the salsa. This Davis location has a nice outdoor patio. When we were there they seemed waaay overstaffed. The parking lot is easy and the location wasn't at all crowded. A nice place for a quick, healthy(ish) lunch. read more
