As a former UC Davis student and current Davis resident, it's crazy to see how far Shaws has come!…read moreI remember when Shaws and star Ginger were the only food trucks on campus and it was such a great meal at a good deal. Now they have their own storefront with a ton more options to customize your meal, and more options and things to order overall. The storefront is not huge, but I don't think it needs to be. It's clean and pretty well organized. The service is also fine. I ordered a combo rice bowl and was glad to be able to add extra toppings like tomatoes in the such. Now, the one thing that they don't do like the old truck used to do is load up with sauce. The old truck used to drown your bowl in sauce whereas now they're a little more conservative, but I imagine you could ask for more if you wanted more. The bowl itself tasted good. It's not going to be the best Halal food that you'll get in Davis or anywhere else in the world, but it tasted nostalgic, and I really enjoyed the whole thing. My husband who is currently on campus more than I am noted that the storefront gives you more food than the food truck at the silo. He also said that the food tasted better here.

It's one drumstick. The side of cucumber and onion were mostly filler so I this plate left more to be desired. Egg shami burger: C- I ordered this because it sounded interesting and was cheap, but the bread was just not enjoyable to me. It was too soft and just tasted like a premade hamburger bun. The egg is okay but doesn't stand out as something that highlights a sandwich/burger. Some contrasting textures would have helped too like a crunchy pickled vegetable. I must say though that the service is super friendly here and they gave samples of one of their spiced drinks.

I got the Samosa Chaat and the Chicken Biryani. Samosa Chaat - really good! Tons of flavor and filling. Great value for 5.99 for two pieces. Spicier then expected! They aren't playing around with the spice level here, you should let them know if you can't handle your spice. Chicken Biryani - overall, pretty solid dish. While the chicken was tender and fall apart, it was a little dry. Not dry enough to make the dish unenjoyable, but definitely a little drier than I expected when comparing to the Samosa Chaat. Service - the two individuals manning the food truck were very nice and explained all the various dishes to me. You also get a little free water with your order. Ambiance - they're located in a gas station parking lot with four or five parking spots nearby adjacent to the tire pressure refilling station. They also have a few tables and chairs set up in the shade behind the food truck if you want to eat there. Conclusion: I will definitely be back to try out some of their other dishes. If you enjoy Pakistani food and can handle your spice, stop by and give them a try.

They have a rotating menu of hand-pies, so don't go with a specific one in mind. All the ones I've had are tasty, but for the price, I wish they were bigger. I usually need two to fill up. I do understand that a lot of this is likely due to the hefty booth fee the Market charges. The folks running it are very friendly. The last time I was there, I couldn't decide between the Mario (Italian sausage, marinara and mozzarella) and Luigi (cremini, pesto and mozzarella). Both were excellent, with flavorful filling and a flaky crust that also held up to the filling. The caramelized onion and Gruyère also sounded tempting. In the past I've had a mushroom and cheese pie, and some sort of chicken filling that I don't recall (not that it wasn't memorable -- it was just several years ago).

Their flavors change every week, and often are seasonal, but never fail to be unique and flavorful! They always have a couple savory and a couple sweet pie options, so my partner and I will get lunch and dessert in a one-stop trip! There is rarely a line, since the pie are premade and kept warm (or cold for some of the dessert pies), ready to be enjoyed! You just order, and they hand you the food, with little stamps on them to indicate the flavor. The workers are super friendly, and answer any questions you may have. Handheld operates out of quite possible the most adorable food-truck I've ever seen or ordered from, with a vintage, old-fashioned homemade delivery service vibes, and I was first drawn to the look of the truck way back before I even knew what the sold. But boy was I impressed once I read their menu and tried their food. They always have a couple vegetarian options, as well as a couple with meat, so there is something for everyone, and it's all worth it. Do yourself a favor, and stop by the next time you are at the farmers market in need of a snack or some lunch :)
