Just jarred my memory watching Chopped & Local 111 chef Jo. Traveled the Taconic State Parkway for close to 50 years. Decided to make a stop at Local 111 since I was not about to make it to Chief Martindale Diner or CIA for dinner. It's a few mile drive off of the exit. Ok, entered, the place, it looked busy, stopped and waited to be seated - 15 minutes, no one came to acknowledge me and all wait staff saw me, they just chatted with friends. I was about to leave when someone came up and seated me. Whatever I ordered was not memorable. Add insult to injury, there was a 20% gratuity add to the bill + a $3+ service charge. This was pre COVID. Have not been there since. This may be a go to place for Philmont/Austerlitz but not worth a more then a 5 minute drive Gratuity is discretional, not your demand, pay your staff accordingly, there will be no need for gratuities Don't bother, it's not worth the two or three mile drive off the exit read more

5:30 is way too late for dinner. The 20% automatic gratuity added no matter if your a party of 2 or more and then asking for more is simply egregious . read more

We were excited to learn that a "celebrity" chef was in the area. We made a reservation that day and the person said she could "fit us in last minute". We arrived to a basicallly empty restaurant which set the tone for a pretentious meal service. The staff was pushy and did not explain the dishes well. The attempts to upswell and look down on us where unapologetic. Menu is limited at best. Food is overly seasoned and excessively rich. Meat was fatty and vegetables appeared as garnish. Bread is an appetizer provided at a cost. Coffee was poor. Overall, we are not likely to return unless the menu is still overhauled! read more

Incredible! I eat here every time I come upstate, and am always blown away by the quality. The menu and service would feel right at home at a NYC Michelin recommended restaurant. The chef has high standards for what makes it onto the menu and for what comes out of the kitchen. The menu rotates with food that's in season so every time I visit I can try some quality food that I haven't had there before. It's incredibly difficult (for me anyway) to find a place that comes close to the caliber of this place when you're so far away from major cities, which is a shame because places like this have great access to local farms and quality ingredients. read more

We were looking for a spot not far off the highway after a trip to Williams College from Brooklyn to see our son play baseball (for Hamilton--we won!). A quick Yelp search revealed this place, although the location (small village of Philmont) seemed unlikely for a really good restaurant. We were proven wrong! This place is EXCELLENT. The look is rather modern warehouse meets bar in an old fire/EMT building, perhaps. Simple, not fussy, but still cool. The menu is short ( a great sign) and fresh. The cocktails were tasty and went down (too) easily. We had the fresh made bread (outstanding) and chicory salad to start (insanely fresh, maybe there's a garden outback?) and perfectly seasoned. I had the fish if the day (sea bass with skin on) which was crispy and piping hot with a beautiful seasonal slaw type of topping with fresh herbs and hazelnuts as well as sweet potato and a creamy sauce. I basically licked the plate. My husband had the rabbit meatballs which he loved but could have been a bit hotter. We then shared the carrot cake which was moist and yummy and came with a gelato. Also, their coffee was awesome--a rare find in my book. But their service was perhaps the best part of the evening still. The wait staff were friendly, helpful, good humored, and interested in us without being intrusive. Saving this place for the next time we're in the area--you should, too! read more

My only complaint would be that my date and I made a reservation but were told upon arrival that all the outdoor seating was reserved for another party. Since I didn't specifically say I wanted to sit outside I accepted the responsibility and still enjoyed my meal from indoors, albeit a little apprehensive in COVID times, but the outdoor tables remained empty all night! Two stars because the food was okay. My wife enjoyed her fish of the day, which was a halibut. But here's the issue - I ended up paying 68% tip. I normally tip between 22-25% but at Local 111 they offer a disclaimer that to ensure a fair wage for their workers they charge 20% on top of the bill. When my bill came I noticed there was also a suggested tip area of 20-25%. When we inquired as to what the 20% added to our bill was if not gratuity we were told it was for all workers front and back of house and the added tip line was for the waitress. This was confusing and felt ridiculous. Of course I want everyone to be paid a fair wage but why isn't the restaurant handling that? The restaurant could raise their prices by a few dollars which would be fine and then pass those funds on to insure that THEY pay their workers a fair wage. They could also just pay their workers a fair wage because that is their job as employers. But to set up a situation where you're charged 20% of your bill (in my case $150 to start so now it's $180) and then to be asked to do another 20-25% ON THAT AMOUNT well, I ended up paying $220 on a $150 bill. If that's something you're into, good for you. But I am hoping the restaurant will read this and consider paying their workers very well and not asking us to pay 60%+ on each bill to cover what should already be something they consider. read more

Love love love this place. More vegetarian/plant-based options would be great, but there's always at least one or two. Local 111 has been my go-to for celebrating special occasions upstate for years, and it never lets us down. The Hudson Valley abounds with small, sustainable family farms, and Local 111 not only supports them but proudly showcases their produce, meats and fish on the menu. The bar is similarly stocked with great local wines, beers, and liquors. Prices are reasonable for the quality and environment, if not within budget for a weekly meal. Servers are knowledgeable about the menu and helpful in recommending adaptions to meet dietary restrictions. read more

We just had a delightful dinner at Local 111. All the dishes were inventive and inspired! The bread was heavenly. We shared a plate of vegetables with whipped feta that tasted like a garden. My husband and I shared a pork schnitzel over a green gazpacho that was flawless. My son got a chicken sandwich with an au jus that he tried to drink! I do however, have a service note. It is de rigor to open a bottle of wine at the table. Even a half bottle. Why? Because an uncorked bottle could be filled with anything. Happiness is when expectations exceed reality. We were on our way North, out of The City and my hosts agreed that we should forget about making dinner an go eat here on our way to their house. They said it was good, that it had a very creative woman-chef who had been doing 'farm-to table' for a while and that it was relaxed, unpretentious and excellent. Hey! I was going along for the ride. We split a magical cauliflower dish and an oyster mushroom masterpiece for apps followed by a soft-shell crab special, a melted cheese roll/sandwich thing and a lamb meatball in OMG sauce as main courses. The flavor/spice combinations (esp. the lamb) were unique and quality was exceptional and just Wow! The wine list was small but had a super-reasonable Pinot Noir from Bourgogne that we had no trouble finishing. Far off the beaten path, in this small town in the Hudson River Valley, I was expecting good and I found dinning happiness. read more

Really creative and tasty menu. Everything we had was amazing. Soju cocktails are really worth a try before you order a bottle of wine to go with your dinner. We started with the sausage corn dog appetizer ummmm. Best grownup corn dog ever. The Basmati Crunch salad with spring slaw, turmeric aioli and peanuts was so refreshing, it made you want to get every last morsel. Braised pork shoulder super tender ,loved the parsnips. Ricotta dumplings with 3 day slow cooked bolognase would make any Italian Mama jealous. Save room for desert. The dark chocolate flourless cake with Carmel sauce and those crunchy bits of sea salt was out of this world! Wish I lived closer to frequent this little gem more often. read more

This was unexpectedly poor. We sat outside as the weather was fine...but it was unfortunately noisy due to the grass being mowed across the street, Harleys rumbling by, and a truck with a confederate flag circling the block! I ordered their summer salad ($13), and a meagre portion, watery, and with a blue cheese dressing tasting odd, arrived On the bright side, 111's homemade bread was delicious and plentiful. I ordered the "Chatham Cod" which came well prepared with an excellent sauce but that was it. No sides, no veggies... My wife ordered the chicken breast which, when it came, looked like dried-out brown tofu. It apparently tasted like that too! The wine by the glass was fine but at 1/2 glass at $13, was a ripoff. Dinner came to $45/person including a gratuity. Needless to say, we will not be making the 40 minute drive to Philmont again. read more

Was staying in Hudson for the weekend and came across this wonderful Farm to Table place on yelp. 20 minutes away but definitely worth stopping by when in the area and passing through. Ate here on a Sunday afternoon before driving back to the city. Ambience, Service, Ingredients were all amazing! The local ingredients and flavors was like a party in your mouth. We ordered the special soup of the day which was a corn ale cheese chowder. They told us it was made with Allagash white ale. It tastes amazing!!! The soup was not too thick being a chowder and has the right amount of cheese flavor without overpowering the taste. We definitely visit again just to have this soup! I ordered the special fried blueberry french toast with almond butter. Usually not a fan of almond butter but with the blueberry sauce and a dab of the whip cream the flavors all came together. It also had granola which gave each bite a little crunch. The dish was huge and very satisfying. My boyfriend had the house scramble which consists of corn, califlower and feta cheese scrambled into the eggs. A definite must order savory dish. The "Homies" which was their potatoes were nice and crunchy. Must visit! All the ingredients were fresh and tasty. The staff were all so friendly! And the ambience was very modern and the best part is it wasn't the usual NYC hustle and bustle where you have to eat quickly and are rushed out. A nice relaxing Sunday Brunch! read more

The review is first, and COVID-specific comments addressed at the end: We did an automated reservation, for our anniversary. We don't know Josephine, but she took care of the reservation herself and emailed a nice note about the anniversary. We arrived on time and the table was ready. Josephine herself welcomed and seated us. The staff was cheery and attentive. Overall, the staff had a good balance of leaving us alone to converse and being attentive. Cone to think of it, there wasn't a single time that we had to look for our server for something. We started with drinks (A nice, dry Cremant Blanc - France) The food started with the Beet and Jasmine Rice Salad, and the Carrot Salad. We shared. Both were hearty, complex, with ingredients and seasonings that we were trying to guess. There was a Halibut soup on the menu that I wanted to try, but I went for the halibut entrée instead. We had the Parisian Ham-Wrapped Chicken Breast, which was delicious. With smoked tomato sauce, potato puree, peppers and pistachios. The ham was like bacon (in the best way). We finished only half of it. Took the other half home. We also had the Day Boat Halibut, a perfect portion, perfectly cooked, on a base of white beans with capers and kale. We had to skip dessert. The room is both large enough to give you privacy, has a low noise level to allow quiet conversation. Nice low lighting, kitchen noise was at a minimum. We've been here 6-10 times before, and have never had a bad meal or questionable service. The menu successfully follows the seasons, and there are always several good choices. Local 111 is, of course, an independent business, navigating a pandemic. For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 stays in the local economy, creating jobs and expanding the locality's tax base. For every $100 spent at a national chain or franchise business, only $14 remains in the community. You have a choice! COVID Notes: I had a question about their COVID setup, and she sent answers withing the hour (Outdoor tables with heaters, spaced-out indoor tables). We ended up indoor next to a large wall that was a screen to the outside, so there was plenty of air and circulation, and not chilly on a Fall evening. We are social distancing compliant--with vulnerable family members--and we were comfortable with the setup. read more

My partner and I were very disappointed in the food and felt it lacked flavor and quality for the high prices plus 4% surcharge for the service. I found my meal of Lamb Ragu very greasy and lacking in any flavor and my tuna appetizer was also a big disappointment, it seemed like canned tuna, not even the greens had any taste. My partners fried chicken was one piece of chicken for $26., which would have been fine if it were edible. It was extremely tough and he could barely eat any of it. In hindsight, he should have sent it back. In fact, all of the food should have gone back. It was a waste of the $160. dollar for two bill. We would not recommend this place and they should seriously consider a new chef and total menu overhaul. Save your money and cook your own fried chicken at home. Two big thumbs down. read more

I had it in my mind that there weren't any vegetarian options on the menu here, so I was never terribly eager to go, even though I'd heard rave reviews from friends who aren't vegetarian. But I looked up the menu, saw a few options for me, and we decided to go. There definitely are vegetarian options (I think the server said they had added some), and I ordered something that's a bit hard to explain. It was some kind of baked/seared cabbage sections with a mushroom cream sauce. There was more to it than that, and I know it doesn't sound particularly interesting, but it really was delicious. A very creative concoction, and something I'd love to have again if it comes up on the menu. The meat eaters were extremely happy with their dishes, although I can't remember what they got. It was just an all-around "wow, this is delicious" kind of meal. The staff were great, our server was friendly and helpful, and the overall ambiance is really a treat. Great place, don't be shy if you're a vegetarian (but check the menu because it changes). If you eat meat and/or fish, there's definitely lots to choose from, all apparently quite good judging by the reactions of other diners in the restaurant. read more

Come here for: Farm-to-table excellence at paycheck-to-paycheck prices. _____________________ For a converted industrial space, this restaurant is surprisingly cozy ... and for the middle of nowhere it's surprisingly sophisticated. On warm summer days the garage doors roll open and the NYC weekenders roll in for some of the freshest, best-prepared food within driving distance of the city. The brunch menu boasts a ton of variety, and every dish that comes out of the kitchen looks amazing. I chose the whole wheat waffles with strawberry-rhubarb compote and whipped cream, which just might be one of the best decisions I ever made before noon. The side of sausage was a revelation -- chunky, loose-packed, and browned to perfection, seasoned with fresh herbs that were light enough to let the flavor of the pork shine through. Nearly everything on my table was made in-house, from the sausage to the whipped cream to the half-and-half. Seriously, who takes the time to make their own half-and-half? It's that kind of attention to detail that sets this place apart. I can't wait to come back and try the dinner menu, which, I'm told, changes every Wednesday when the local farmers make their deliveries. Prices are incredibly reasonable given the quality of food -- maybe because they don't charge extra for posing & pretense, like so many places do. Really, really wonderful food. I'm surprised there haven't been any other reviews in like a year! Came last weekend when I was up in the Catskills visiting family, and we went out for a birthday celebration. I'll get to my main, but let's start with the apps -- pickled ramps were an interesting way to start things off, mostly just pickly and not too..ramp-y? The house-cured olives were amazing, and this is coming from someone who previously proclaimed to hate olives! Red mustard salad was perfectly fine, if not out of this world, but the boston lettuce salad with bacon - excellent! Bacon bits my ass, this was some delicious meat. Although I ordered a veg entree, yummy meat was definitely a theme of the evening, as evidence by my multiple samples of my sister's orchiette with sausage. I stuck with the conchiglie with ricotta, roasted garlic and spinach - wow. Simple, no real sauce, seemed like just a butter bath, but the ingredients were top-notch. Excellent cheese, and is there anything better than eating whole cloves of garlic, sweetened with the oven and fat? Yeah, no, there isn't. I was REALLY looking forward to trying the ice cream cookie sandwich, but they were out! So we went with the flourless chocolate cake and the rhubarb crisp. The cake was rich and delicious, but that crisp...oh god, that crisp. I ate more crisp than I care to admit right now, but it was worth it. There aren't too many really quality special occasion-type restaurants around these parts, but Local 111 fits the bill. Ambiance and food both get an A from me. read more

We went here for a joint birthday celebration last night after I'd heard really good things. It proved to be wonderful. It was a beautiful drive and I really loved the aesthetic of the converted auto body shop. The interior was primarily decorated in gold and black, and it was far more simple chic than one might expect for a rural-type area. I don't mean that to sound snobby - I come from some rural roots myself! I'm really into simple, good food done well without being overly fussy and Local 111 manages this deftly. Almost all the produce and meat is local, and much of it is organic, grass-fed. etc. The seafood is not, of course. I started with a delicious high ball made with sherry, bitters and ginger ale. For my app, I had a simple salad with chicory, pancetta and ricotta salata. My friend had the baked homemade pasta with fresh corn and braised lamb, which she said was unique but tasty. My boy had this delicious duck and pork liver pate served with honey thyme almonds and these delicious spicy pickles. The pate was out of this world. My grilled grass-fed steak with shallots and red wine deduction was cooked perfectly and I loved the side of roasted broccoli. The summer squash with olive butter wasn't quite as good. My boy got the roasted monkfish with potato-leek gratin, which he loved. I snuck a bite of the fish, which was absolutely wonderful. Amy's free-range roasted chicken with fresh herbs was perfectly roasted, leaving it moist and succulent. It was probably the best roast chicken I've had and she had the local carrots with marcona almonds and roast broccoli as her sides. For dessert, we each had the buttermilk pannacotta which came with a rhubarb syrup, a small piece of crumb cake and a candied orange peel. It could have used some more fruit with it but it was still quite tasty. Dinner for three with wine, a cocktail and three courses each came to about 180. Honestly, for the amount and quality of food we had, I thought that was pretty reasonable considering it was a special occasion. If I went again, an entree each and a shared app would have been plenty. Amy and I both took home leftovers so we'd have room for dessert. I was told this is the best restaurant in Columbia County. I beg to differ! I ordered the steak rare- it came out medium, with the edges well done. Yuk! It was very small for the price, served in pieces. Looked pretty but not tasty. I told the waitress that the steak was not done properly and all she said was "I'll tell them". No apology, no offer to make it right. Two pieces of vegetable, tasty but really? Only two strips? A few SMALL potatoes. I asked for more bread (which was good) but it never came. Left hungry after a steak dinner! That has never happened to me! One table-mate had stuffed dumplings with sauce. He was less than thrilled. Because the restaurant is near a church, it doesn't have a full bar. You can get wine and beer, as well an an interesting cocktail. All in all, I won't be back. I have to say I got sucked in. Love the farm to table, local focus and I have a personal connection to the name and the number 111. It was a schlep to get there, but we enjoyed the ride. Great space - love the garage doors and it is a very warm, inviting space. We were greeted and seated promptly. Had the olives as a snack - delicious. My husband was happy with the beer selection (not stellar, but satisfying). I had prossecco which I greatly enjoyed. Appetizers - I had the corn chowder and my husband had the risotto. Both needed editing and downsizing. A cup of lighter corn chowder (it was delicious, but heavy with cream and potatoes) would have been a better choice. My husband's risotto was again, delicious, but had a center of cheese, then topped with tomatoes and almonds. And it was an entree size - too much on all fronts. Main course - husband had steak- good flavor, a little chewy. I had the lamb, sliced, nicely cooked, it had an eggplant puree stuffed roasted red pepper under it and red cabbage on top. The flavors complimented each other, but it seemed unnecessarily complicated, IMHO. Had a lovely Finger Lakes Pinot Noir. Dessert - we had raspberry/blueberry chocolate bread pudding with homemade vanilla ice-cream. Not spectacular, but certainly good. I had a glass of blueberry port that was surprisingly good and complimented the dessert well. We enjoyed the experience, and the service was excellent. The word of the night: edit. read more

A diverse local menu of comfort foods elevated to fine dining, professional service, a nice affordable wine list, fun desserts, and a welcoming atmosphere have moved this ahead of other Columbia County standouts like Old Chatham Country Store in my book. read more
