Had a lot of trouble trying to get questions answered the river grill, which I understand is not the same as the tavern but operates together. I called in twice to double check hours, dog friendliness and make a reservation, and trying to do anything with the apathetic girl on the phone was like pulling teeth. When I called a second time to see if there was fish and chips on the menu at the river grill, I was told "the tavern is closed." I wasn't really sure what that had to do with my question? I asked if I could be transferred to someone to talk about the river grill and she replied that it's the same phone line. I asked my question again and was told that it wasn't available. Could have saved me a couple minutes and the attitude. read more

Everything I've ever ordered has ranged from very good to excellent. Oysters always fresh, cocktails excellent (try the blood orange cosmo) and banging burgers. Love the ambiance of both the tavern and riverside. Music in the tavern on Thursdays is always a pleasure. Great outdoor dining at the grill with music, sometimes karaoke, games etc. Both good service and value IMO. read more

Pathetic. A double smash burger should be easy. Not sure how they came up with the soggy mess they served me. Nasty greasy mostly burnt fries like they gave us what they cleaned out of the frier from last night. Mushy cold shaved prime rib slider with lukewarm au jus. The waitress had to go back to the bar to get some more martini to finish filling the glass. The free oyster that came with the martini apparently needed a vinegar douche for some reason. A little scary, definitely not remotely tasty. I won't even go into how bad the waitress was. read more

First of all...Room 8 is the one to ask for. It's more of a suite than just a room. Upstairs (always our choice when it's a historic building such as this), top floor, out of the way, a view of the river (so foggy first thing in the a.m.), large & roomy, lovely king bed, soaking tub in the corner of the room (in addition to the bathroom with a nice shower) surrounded by plants. Quality linens and soaps. We stayed 3 nights (weeknights) and had a delightful time. It was very quiet. Staff friendly and helpful. Continental breakfast is minimal but good. Go up the street to The Rooster if you want a bigger morning meal. We explore the Catskills a lot, never to been to Athens, and it looks like it's starting to happen. Also a terrific spirits shop up the street, Lighthouse Liquors. We didn't get to try the tavern but the menu was appealing and the crowd seemed local & lively. Will be back. read more

I would like to start by saying that the Stewart House is probably best to visit on a non-holiday weekend and when it is warmer out. Our experience was lackluster over this past Thanksgiving weekend. The bed and breakfast is big, neat. Our room was spacious and everything was clean in room 6. I wanted a similar experience to others giving 5 star reviews but that's not where this trip took us. It was odd to not be greeted by anyone but only have an email with a passcode to get into the house and then just to walk up to your room. There is little to no service from housekeeping, due to covid, as they request you ask if you need fresh towels every day. Which for the price we paid, as we stayed in one of the larger suites, I assumed was a daily thing. But again, Covid. The walls are paper thin and you can hear guests around you, out of SH control, there were some very rowdy children, but still an example. They woke us up very early both days. Breakfast is granola and coffee/tea and a slice of zucchini bread wrapped in a bag. Not terrible, but again, for what you're paying, maybe a little more detail in that. You almost feel like you're doing something you're not supposed to because it's just left out on the 2nd floor nook all day and all night. Maybe provide a small fridge for people to store drinks or a proper waste basket in the rooms? In #6 there were decorative vases and one looked like a garbage but out of courtesy, we didn't use in case it was actually a vase lol. Or use the cell phone number we had to text to check in to maybe see if we need anything? I by no means want to be smothered by anyone, but again, it was just a little odd with absolutely no communication. I think this place would be super fun and charming during the summer so you can take advantage of the restaurant on the water across the street and other things like trips to Hudson, and if you aren't hung up on service from anyone in the b&b itself. We have been spoiled finding other really great B&B's with great customer service in the Hudson Valley and unfortunately, the emptiness and lack of attention to as guests just didn't do it for us. read more

Enjoyed a lovely, summer evening by the river, under the gently swaying willows. We each had a delicious and summery vodka Collins and shared an app of steamed clams. The clams were tender and in a tasty, garlicky broth that we sipped up greedily with toasted bread rounds. Yum! I had the Smashburger single with side of potato salad. He had the Smashburger double with beans. Delicious. They came dressed with lettuce, tomatoes,onions, and delicious sauce of their own. Perfect. read more

Lovely old restored property. If you want lots of character this will suit. I particularly liked the shower with ample hot water and the thick cozy robe. However, know this: there is no food service during the week and the offerings around town are thin. We opted for a carry out pizza and some wine from the local wine shop. The owner Sam was super nice. Wonderful location. Just wished the restaurant had been open. Would have loved dining on the river. read more

We went here for dinner on Friday of Easter weekend (it's a standalone restaurant as well as a hotel) and loved it. I had a flank steak with mashed potatoes and my wife the cod with stewed butter beans. The service was friendly and efficient. The space is charming and right next to the water. On top of it all, I forgot my credit card and they were very helpful in getting it back to me on our return trip from NYC. read more

I hadn't eaten at the Stewart House for a few years and was interested to try it as recommended by friends. There was no host at the desk when I arrived. The menu was interesting and varied. Two of us ordered the oysters for an appetizer. After taking the order to the kitchen the waitress informed us that there were only 4 oysters left but since they didn't even make one order they would give them to us gratis. Nice touch. However she also mentioned that they had run out because they only got a delivery once a week! We had a variety of main courses and everyone was pleased except me. I had the crispy duck special with a nicely cooked duck breast on a bed of grilled vegetables. The problem was the what the waitress described as " black rice" was wild rice which unfortunately was not completely cooked. Like the duck it was crispy. I didn't want to make a fuss and decided that I would mention it at the end of the meal. The portion was large enough that I didn't finish it anyway. The problem was dessert. I ordered the lemon blueberry olive oil cake. The cake was moist and a nice change from the usual three chocolate dessert on many menus. When the waitress came to clear the dessert plates I mentioned that the dollop of whipped cream was spoiled. I thought it was odd since three of us had the dessert and no one else noted but I had my husband taste it also and he agreed that it was spoiled. I was brining it to her attention not for an offer of another dessert but simply to let the kitchen know. I even mentioned that no one else had a problem with the cream on their dessert. Her response was to tell me that I was wrong; that they had just made the whipped cream and that it came out of the same "pouch" as that on the other plates. I'm not sure how you get whipped cream in a pouch. So I'm considering whether they will get a second chance. Two problems with the food and a waitress with an attitude may not be worth a repeat performance. read more

A lovely quaint hotel - spacious, clean rooms with extremely comfy beds. A bunch of family and friends were together for a wedding and the staff were very accomodating to our rowdiness!! Thin flooring that creaked like crazy when a few of us early birds would come down to get some coffee....but that is part of the charm of an 1883 establishment! The Stewart House is amazing. I loved everything about it. We stayed for one quick night - it was a quiet weekday so they upgraded our room to a water view. The check-in process was easy (it's contactless, they just leave your key in your room, so there's no waiting in line). The room was LOVELY - it was such a beautiful mix of modern elements with antiques. It didn't feel like a standard hotel room - it felt so unique, while being so comfortable and clean. The coffee/tea/breakfast bar was delightful. They provided beautiful French yogurts, homemade granola (I think it was made by the owner?), and snacks such as apples and chips. We ate dinner at the bar and it was delightful. I had the burger, my husband had bangers & mash. Both were delicious. The bar was beautiful and lively without being too crowded. The decor was impeccable and I loved all of the vintage touches - the lamps, the dishes, etc. Lastly, I loved that we could bring our dog for the stay. There was a park across the street for Fetch with a beautiful river view. Overall, we loved our stay! It was quick but I'd love to go back. I'd recommend this 10/10. read more

This is exactly what we were looking for: we were boating and wanted to find an outdoor on-river cafe with good food and good wine and a little shade. We found it at the Stewart House. The food wasn't just good, it was excellent. We ordered the jerk chicken wings -- had an amazing middle eastern spice with an approachable kick. I had the lamb tzatziki sandwich, my husband had the grilled vegetable and it was very good with robust servings...and house made chips that we so good then had to order more of them! Fresh approach to spices, to ingredients and certainly a lot of care to the construction of the food and tastes. And the Rose' was excellent. Not a cheap Rose', but a nice French one. We tied up next door at the town dock with ample space. The restaurant allowed our dog in to join us in the corner of the patio. Our waitress, Dylan, was attentive even though we were as far from the kitchen as we could be. This is a casual, rustic garden with table-cloth worthy food. You can feel the history of the Hudson and see it as well. The views were lovely. Note that this is not a spot for people who want a precious, white-table cloth experience. There was a fire pit and bean bag toss. This is more beer-garden meets river bar. With a great chef, whom they should make a bigger deal about on their website. My husband didn't want me to review this place so we could keep it a secret. I hope it doesn't get too discovered too soon, but I also wish them all the success they deserve. read more

On the Hudson River in Athens, NY, just 10 minutes away from the town of Hudson. We came here to visit Cross Roads Brewery (which was really good) and stumbled upon this waterfront gem just 2 blocks away. It turns out it's a hotel, bar and restaurant. They also have a beautiful outdoor dining area with a full bar right on the water which is where we sat. There's also.live music on the weekends. Great drinks served by a very friendly and hospitable young lady named Kadrian. We ordered the mushroom pizza with locally grown shitake, oyster and crimini mushrooms with mascarpone and truffle oil. Excellent. I can tell from the menu that somebody knows what their doing. Looking forward to a return visit. read more

We absolutely loved our stay at The Stewart House! The room was gorgeous and the bed was so comfortable that we wanted to take it home with us. The clams at The River across the street are to die for, I could eat them every day. We took the ferry across the river to a concert in Hudson. It was docked literally right outside the hotel which was really convenient. A lot of the amenities (soaps, lotion, even the raw honey at breakfast) seemed to be from local businesses. Coffee, tea, and breakfast were available in the morning. They had baskets of fresh muffins, fruit, and yogurt along with granola. We will definitely be back!! read more

My husband and I just had our babymoon here and we fell in LOVE with the space. Very idyllic setting on the Hudson River. The inn was restored in its original rustic beauty with elements of modernity. I recently returned from a weekend at The Stewart House in Athens Ny and felt compelled to write about it. The Inn is incredibly charming. They kept the integrity of this historic building while making it comfortable and luxurious. I slept better than I ever have! The staff as attentive and friendly. They assisted us in making arrangements to enjoy all that the area had to offer - and who knew that there would be so much to do nearby? !! We were active during the day, and enjoyed great food,and live music in the Inn's outdoor space and private dining room in the evenings. What a great place to spend a weekend with friends, and so close to NYC! Loved it! Thank you Stewart House, we will be back! read more

If it was possible to rate this restaurant with no stars I would have done so. The service here is horrible. I am sorry to say that I can't comment on the food as after sitting in the outdoor bar area for an hour and a half we still did not have any. The bartender, waiter and what appear to be a manager did not know how to communicate with each other. So much that 25 minutes after we requested our bill ( now two hours into the experience) our food started trickling out of the restaurant. The three other tables, that were also sitting in the outdoor bar area, were as equally frustrated with the service. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a present dining experience. read more

My boyfriend and I booked a room here for Valentine's Day Weekend. We had a family emergency and cancelled at the last minute, but they were very understanding and re-scheduled us at our convenience. We went back the next month, coincidentally, on our anniversary. We were called the day before to ask us if we wanted our rooms to be moved because they were having a party at the bar downstairs for St. Patrick's Day and were afraid we would be bothered by the noise since we were going to be directly above them. We told them we were fine with it, but they moved us anyways. Once we arrived, we realized it was better that they moved us after all. The entire place was beautifully decorated from the moment you walked in. It was one of the best rooms I've ever stayed in. It felt very cozy and relaxing. Someone brought us a cheese plate and champagne as soon as we checked in. They let us do a very late checkout. The overall vibe was laid-back, friendly and always accommodating. We will definitely be coming back. Great hospitality! read more

for the Stewart House River Grill: This spot was great in the past- I understand COVID was tough for the dining business but this was UNACCEPTABLE. $130 dollars for a grocery store roll with straight shrimp no lettuce or tomato, chips in a bag, and their starters did not include all of the ingredients on the menu. The ambience of this place in and of itself deserves 5 stars. The Stewart house is tastefully decorated in an industrial meets rustic way. We stayed in the room war of the worlds and it was the perfect size for my boyfriend, myself, and our pup. The room itself is bright and airy. The bathroom is spacious and clean. It's located on the 2nd floor which has a common area where they provide coffee, tea, and granola. My boyfriend and I spent the morning here reading on the very comfortable couch overlooking the river. The Stewart house also has its own restaurant called Happy Jakes which has the most gorgeous outdoor area directly across the street. We finished off our night with a drink there before diving into the comfortable bed. In the sleepy town of Athens, this hotel makes you content to stay in the entirety of your vacation. For more to do, there is a 15 minute ferry that shuttles you across the river to the town of Hudson which has more bars and restaurants. Conveniently, the ferry is a 2 minute walk from the Stewart house as well. Basically, what I'm saying is that I loved my stay here and will absolutely be coming back the next time I want a weekend away. -Vicki read more

Well the new chef can cook a steak to temperature that's a serious upgrade from the last guy. We sat in the Garden which is beautiful. Live music was great. Service was spot on and the food did not take long at all. The beer is ice cold. The biggest downfall is the smoking. The food could use some fine tuning. Wow, what a perfect place. We came up to Stewart House to spend New Year's Eve and it was cozy and comfortable. It's all about the details. The bedding and lining (on the huge king size beds!) are so top shelf, and there's even cakes and little homemade granola available in the little lounge area on the second floor in the morning. There are a few things that suggest a little wear here and there but overall these things matter very little. The town is small and the primary area of action is across the river in Hudson.
