Nice establishment in Ghent with a wide variety of breakfast and lunch items, pastries, donuts and beverages. The dining room has an antique decor and feels lively. It can get busy and even calling ahead there can be a wait for coffee/tea items. The donuts are soft, yeasty and the jam fillings are tasty. Our party had the breakfast quesadilla, the breakfast burger, and the Lure breakfast sandwich (my favorite of the items we purchased due to the local smoked salmon). The matcha latte was creamy. Incredible spot! Upon walking in, you have to remind yourself that you're in Columbia County and not at all European cafe. Their pastry case and friendly staff will instantly draw you in! I planned a quick stop here before heading to Art Omi for a solo adventure. There have been so many great reviews that I was excited to check the place out for myself. Customer service was excellent - friendly and helpful staff. The building itself is beautiful! There is inside dining as well as outdoor seating on the deck, which looks out over the flowers in bloom. You can feel the history of this place in the best way possible. On this day, it was just a quick grab and go for me, but I look forward to coming back and time to enjoy a meal. I had to try the hashbrown, which was served with both a homemade ketchup and a homemade aioli. I had never tried aioli with a hashbrown before - and it was delicious! Chai tea was perfectly made as well. I brought the pastries home for a later treat, and they were excellent as well. I will make sure to stop here again this summer. read more

What a find! Driving back to NJ from VT and we decided to stop here to refresh ourselves. Our sandwiches were great and the fries were good as well. We ordered two orders of fries for 4 people, but the serving size is large, on order would have sufficed. I also bought a bottle of the blueberry rose jam and it is great, way less surgery then your typical jam. The cafe is also decorated very nicely.... i was instantly relaxed when i walked in. Fantastic stop coming from Art Omi, great service and location, al fresco dining and maybe the BEST hamburger I ever had, brioche bun, perfectly charbroiled with thin fries and a great array of sauces, house ketchup, romesco, alíoli and mustard, the maple cured bacon was the top price. This place used to be awesome. But now it's overpriced for tasteless food and aloof attitude. A roast beef sandwich for $16 is really a half sandwich and no flavor. Not impressive. The Tortilla soup ($12) had tiny shavings of chicken, a half can of chickpeas, and barely a cup of tasteless broth. How about a little parsley to add color? Something. Boston cream donut used to have real vanilla specks, if I remember correctly. Now, it's again tasteless. Not worth the calories. Maybe it's because we arrived 1/2 hour before closing (2pm). But the chef should have some quality control at the end of the day. If there are only tiny flecks of chicken at the bottom of the soup, it shouldn't be served. If there's are only end pieces of bread for the sandwich, give two sandwiches of the end pieces. Doesn't that seem fair? Please guys, what happened? It's been a few times like this. I'm writing because i hope you guys improve. I'm sad that I won't take another chance on this place for a long while. read more

YES, it's worth driving down here just for the Boston Cream donut, even though it's not really a donut but a German berliner (boule de Berlin). The pastry is fresh, rich, and soft, but most importantly, the cream is not too sweet and the chocolate tastes like dark chocolate (and not like cocoa sugar). My husband called it the best doughnut he ever had in his life and I'm so glad to have found a piece of European nostalgia in the Catskills. We also had a sandwich which was delicious but not extraordinary. Worth mentioning that the bread was excellent though. Wish I could give more stars. This place was SO bomb. From the cozy decor with big windows letting in natural light and their edison bulbs with different shades to their delicious selection of breakfast/pastries. We took one bite into their Rosewater pear muffins and instantly regretted not getting more. We started our brunch off with a white and gold flat white as well as a blueberry rose coffee. While the former was an interesting fusion of ginger, turmeric, and coffee - VERY strong on the first two flavors I might add; the latter had a more subtle fruitiness that others might appreciate. Neither was quite up my alley but their entrees were on point. We followed up with a shakshuka with lentils and croque monsieur. The shakshuka was awesome and provided a bit of a kick that some might interpret as spicy but the gf and I found perfect. The croque monsieur, on the other hand had a pleasant crust on its toast and a fine balance of thinly sliced prosciutto, mornay, and gruyere cheeses. I wish there was more! Finally, we took a mix of pastries to go: chocolate peanut brownie cookie (stuck true to its name and contained crunchy peanuts as well as peanut butter, my favorite), a candied lemon zest shortbread (chewy on the inside and a wonderful palate cleanser), golden raisin walnut cookie (yummy and not overly sweet), a potato basil bureka (rich in savory goodness and dangerously flakey), finally the pear rosewater muffin mentioned above (wonderfully moist with chunks of pear and hint of rose). Just returned to Bartlett House today since Covid (we're locals to Ghent). Very disappointed in changes to service - no longer provide table service, now providing 'cafeteria style' ordering along with your own pick up of beverage/coffee, tableware, busing of your own table of dishes. Food good (had Eggs Benedict), but without table service, pricing out of line. Will continue to choose Hudson for breakfast/brunch going forward, sorry to say. A wonderful spot to have breakfast in a beautifully restored railroad hotel from the 1870's, great job guys! The grounds are beautiful with lots of flowers and a nice porch. We sat inside in the dining area and I noticed the separation from the coffee shop area which was non stop with patrons coming in and out. That was a nice touch to help keep the intimacy of the dining area. The décor was mostly of bookshelves loaded with books, and tins of tea with dishware that I believe is for sale. I really liked the wood work and the frosted glass doors. Our server was prompt and very friendly. The menu had a bit of something for everyone and was well thought out. The coffee was a decent mild house blend. I went with the Farmers Breakfast which consists of two farm eggs, toast, breakfast potatoes and choice of meats. I went with the chicken kotletki for meat since it was a newby to me. My wife went with the same except she chose the sausage (which came out undercooked). The portion was decent and the delicious bread that came with it had raisin, dried fruits and walnuts inside. My son had a huge plate of French toast and loved it. The prices were high $12-$14 for most of the breakfasts, but the quality of the food was definitely on the high end. Everything was fresh and delicious. One critique would be the sausage. It's hot which is fine with me, but a heads up on the menu would be great for people who cannot eat hot pepper. The bathrooms were clean and the coffee shop area was beautifully set up and very inviting. Stocked with a lot of breads/baked goods/pastry options and a pleasant smell of fresh coffee. The coffee is excellent, especially the cold brew iced coffee. Their croissants are available in multiple varieties, the best being the phenomenal Ham and Gruyere (I think) croissant, which has mega flavor. I don't like muffins, but they make me like muffins. All around the baked goods are top notch. Bathroom facilities are nice, and the staff is friendly. It is a touch pricey, but if you can swing it, the product is great. Oh, and best Jelly Donut on the planet! The decor is modern and clever, but frankly I am not terribly concerned with that. We met up with some friends whom we haven't seen in forever on Sunday morning here. We pretty much spent most of the day at this place, having a great time, ordering food and drinks, and were all set to give it five stars since everything was pretty much perfect. Then we ordered from "Bartlett House embers" and the experience quickly soured. To start: aesthetics. This place is stunningly beautiful and the integrity of the simple decor speaks volumes. The brick is lovely and the structure itself screams Hudson Valley charm; it's clear that a loving hand restored this place and we admire their decision to keep it classy. The ordering system isn't the most streamlined because you start at the register and then have to wait at the end station to get your coffees. The problem is that several people are waiting there, and it's right by the front entrance, so the space gets jammed. That said, every staff person we encountered inside was kind, quick, and seemed genuinely content to be working there. Food is delicious! Our friend had preordered some baked goods, which was lucky because many of them had already sold out by the time that we arrived. The pistachio croissant is INCROYABLE. Le WOW--possibly the best one that we've ever had and puts our (former) favorite at Common Bond in Houston to shame. The chocolate chip cookie is also pretty good and the blueberry muffin is fine but usual. We enjoyed our frittata plate (tbh one of us thought it was only OK but he didn't eat it right away), and tried a bite of our friend's veggie quesadillas, which we loved. Cold brews are standard. THEN. We spent so much time there catching up that it was already lunch, so we wanted to try something from the Argentinian grill that had recently been fired up. We got two orders of the "Shaved Leg of Lamb," which with tax and tip came to almost $60. Fine, no problem, we eat a fair amount of lamb and we know it's pricey. But here's the description on the menu: "Chimichurri, herb salad." When one of us went to pick up the dishes, 1) The lamb was NOT shaved, it was rather thickly cut, and 2) There was nothing in the to-go container except the lamb with the chimichurri on it. When she asked about the herb salad, the young girl they had handing out the food pointed to the chimichurri and said that that was it. One of us politely explained that it wasn't and at that point the female chef who had overheard our conversation took the dishes, grabbed fistfuls of herbs from a container, and angrily threw those over the lamb. Didn't say a word! Wow, SUPERB customer service. Listen, we're not expecting a Michelin-star herb salad here, but we just gave you a decent tip and YOUR OWN MENU has it on there, so there's no reason to get all huffy and puffy with your CUSTOMER WHO IS GIVING YOU MONEY when she simply asks about what should be provided for THIRTY DOLLARS a pop. Re. the dish itself, the lamb was OK, a bit dry and overcooked, but the chimichurri was zippy and nicely spicy. The randomly throw-on herbs--ahem, "herb salad"--really went a loooooooong way, so great plating!!!!!! OK, long review, oopsa daisy. We want to emphasize that our experience with Bartlett House itself was nearly flawless and we will be thrilled to come back again next time we're in the area. Our advice: stick to them and stay away from the overpriced and underdelivering grill. (BTW, as Texans we can assure you that if you sit outside when the grill is going, you will inevitably end up smelling like smoke--clothes, hair, etc--which not everybody might be going for as their Sunday morning vibe.) read more

Airy and flaky dusted with sugar and filled with perfectly delicious light pastry cream - but ordered it because it was supposed to be filled with coffee cream but didn't taste like coffee. We also got the 4 reds muffin and jam donut which were tart not too sweet. I saw the barista squirt lots of mixture in and was worried it'd be too sweet, but the blueberry rose latte just tasted like coffee. We got a weekend place in Ghent about ten years ago, and drove past that lovely building regularly, wondering what business - if any - would come in and bring it back to life. We couldn't be happier with the place. I've eaten there brunch there several times, and we get bread and/or other carb deliciousness there almost every weekend, so I've made my way through most of the vegetarian options they have. The bread is amazing, fresh and delicious, bread the way it's meant to be. The walnut apricot bread is standout, but even the plain baguettes are so delicious I never know if one is going to survive the three minute drive back to the house. Among the pastries, I don't think I've had a single thing that's disappointed, but the pistachio croissants should probably be illegal. I'm afraid I'm going to wake up in the parking lot one day covered in croissant flakes and pieces of pistachio filling. Also noteworthy are the chocolate croissants and the regular old croissants, but really, I don't think you can go wrong at that pastry counter. For brunch/meal items, I've discovered the shirred eggs and I don't think anything can ever make me learn how to quit them. Eggs baked in a small cast iron skillet with cream, leeks, mushrooms and gruyere. Absolutely delicious. There are a few other items I really want to try, but I can't bring myself to order anything else yet. My husband loves the chicken kotlyetki, and I believe he's had the burger, shakshuka, and fried chicken sandwich, all of which he swears by. We've brought many weekend guests there who have sampled far more on the menu, and no one has ever had a negative thing to say. Well my pregnant self lives way too close to this incredible place. Today my husband and I tried a pistachio croissant, jam filled donut, ham & cheese croissant and a pecan donut. Also an amazing carrot, orange and ginger juice. Honestly everything was great and I do consider myself to be picky. Something I loved was that the pastries weren't the slightest bit too sweet. I can't say enough about this restaurant!! Not only is it a beautifully restored building with a very pretty Atmosphere and great food/coffee, but they also have the BEST customer service! To say the staff is wonderful is such an understatement!!...I dined here this past weekend and when I got home (after A 3 hour drive) I realized I left my purse there! I was so upset and tried to contact them via phone, email and IG but they were closed. The mgr (katie) called me after hours and told me they found my purse and since I lived far she said they would Ship it to me. I even offered to pay for shipping, but she said they would pay for it. I also had other staff members follow up and email/Message me on IG to follow up. I mean they went above and beyond and I'm SO grateful!! THANK YOU KATIE! Aside from this amazing experience, their food is high quality and totally delicious! No exaggeration, It's probably one of the top burgers I've ever had with the best crispy shoe string fries. My husband and I stopped in here last year on my way to go camping and we loved the burger so much, we drove a couple hours back up here to have it again and it did not disappoint! Their bakery is also great with a nice variety of delicious pastries we picked up for our drive home. Also If you like specialty coffees, you're in luck.
