Service definitely needs improvement. When we arrived, no one was at the counter, so we stood waiting for a few minutes. Luckily, we noticed the bell and rang it. Someone called out that they'd be there shortly, but we still had to wait. When the staff finally came, he unfortunately had a very strong body odor that made it hard to even approach the counter. I ended up leaving because I couldn't stand the smell and didn't want it to affect my experience. Had to wait while chatting it up with coworkers ignoring customers waiting. 1/3 of flavors were empty. They were slow. Seemed to not want to help people. They also seem like they do not care or want to be there. Store was a bit dirty needs a deep clean. Signs look ancient. Store looks dated. Charged me different price from the sign. Finally had an experience worthy of my first 1 star review. So sad that this location simultaneously ruined two of my favorite franchises. Loards has been a family favorite since I was little but the quality of the ice cream and toppings here is horrible. Ordered one of my favorite specials a few months ago, the Cherry Hawaiian and the marshmellow was melty in all the wrong ways. I'm pretty sure it was almost or already expired. The floor was so sticky we all left with our shoes making that annoying sticky sound. It was obvious they hadn't mopped in ages. It was a very hot day but the fans were broken. I hoped the service would be worthy of at least a second star, but it wasn't. Folks who work here make it very obvious they don't want to. Out of desperation on another hot day, I stopped by for pizza (it's attached to a Mountain Mikes and both are operated by 1 person). This is not Mountain Mikes. The crust was like cardboard. The kitchen lights were off and we don't even know where or how they got the pizza. It seemed like they just went behind the counter to grab some frozen pizza. Weirdest experience ever. At least this time the floor wasn't sticky...I guess that was a highlight. Don't come here. Both Mountatin Mikes and Loards are quality places to eat, just not at this location. read more

Common theme that I am reading here is I should have read the reviews. Upon further inspection, two iconic brands are being ruined. When I walk in, I can see the worker standing at the register for Mountain Mikes see me. After almost 10 minutes, I asked them to help us with our order. It turns out that this location does not have the ingredients for a sundae even though it is still on the menu. My two scoops were disgusting as it was obvious that the ice cream is old and expired. This was our first visit to this location and it was a huge disappointment! The kids were commenting about how the ice cream was "stretchy", initially I thought they meant it was creamy but when I saw how it dangled from their cone, I quickly realized that it was old- that slimy, gummy frozen over thing that happens to ice cream when it's old. Sadly enough 4 out of 4 cones purchased in different flavors all had the same issue. Luckily one of the kids had purchased theirs in a cup so we had something to discard it in during the drive home. Shortly after 2 of us started having a stomach ache. Such a disgusting experience. This is not typical of Loard's ice cream and the Livermore location which we frequently go to has never had the problem. It totally seems to be an issue isolated to this location. This location is inside a Mountain Mike's pizza, so the poor service and quality makes sense--ice cream is an afterthought. Came in around 9:20 pm and we were the only customers, emoloyees were at a table talking. Cashier was rushing us (not one other customer in there). Didn't properly rinse the scoop so there was residue of other ice cream on mine. Didn't know how to properly pack a cone so it almost fell of multiple times when I tried to eat it. Didn't have peanuts for my husband's Sundae, only almonds and he packed way too many on there. My ice cream was icy. This location also doesn't offer a one-scoop sundae like the original stores, so it's either a big, expensive sundae or nothing. The moment we left the chashier locked the door behind and turned off the lights at 9:30 pm when the posted hours were until 10 pm,, though the Mountain Mike's side was still open. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but the best description I can give of Loard's Ice Cream is that it's edible. Given the prices, you probably have better options, depending on where you live. I prefer Coldstone Creamery by far. Fenton's in Oakland is also excellent. I had Loard's once in 2008 and I guess my memory was inaccurate, or the quality has gone downhill since then. Very disappointing. I tried a sample of Peanut Butter Fudge and I bought a pre-pack of Mocha Fudge. Very little fudge in it, and the quality of the ice cream reminds me of the stuff you find in the supermarket, and I'm not talking about Hagen Daz or Ben & Jerry's. Similar to the numerous other reviews for this particular store, they clearly have no idea of what a normal sized scoop of ice cream should be. We have loved Loard's for years, and we continue to frequent their 2 locations in Livermore, as well as their San Leandro shops when we're in those areas. Not only can they visit the other Loard's stores to see what a proper scoop looks like, but they can go to pretty much any other non-Loard's ice cream shop too. This Loard's location is definitely bringing down the Loard's name. Whomever controls the Loard's franchisees needs to take a hard look at this particular store. And please don't waste my time telling me you have new employees. This isn't a new problem, as can be seen by the numerous reviews over a long period of time stating the same. ANY......ANY.....ANY new employee should be instructed to make an ice cream cone, and a sundae, and a milkshake --- as the bare minimum before starting to actually work a shift behind that counter. This place turns out to be our frequent go to ice cream store in this summer. It is the closest to our house. Other good thing is boba tea just right next door for me. Food: still try to stay away with the artificial colors (like rainbow sherbet or bubble gum). Chocolate series are good, like chocolate marble, chocolate showers... today the chocolate ice cream my daughter got was a little defrosted. Even when the server scooping, like it has been out of freezer for a while. I suspect the storage of food maybe inappropriate or not up to standard. Price: $3.25 kids scoop for 8 and under. Waffle cone $0.50 extra. Service: I suppose to be charged $4.06 after 8.25% tax. Somehow the new staff was trying to charge me over $5 after he played with the iPad register and tried to figure out the pricing for 5 minutes. So I remind him that I've asked for 1 kid scoop with waffle cone. He said because it's a waffle cone he put 3 scoops of ice cream in there but only charging me 2 scoops. Indeed he did, but I didn't ask for. At the end he adjusted the charge, although I said I would pay for what I get. Concerns: I never received or offered for a copy of my receipt every time I pay with cash. 1 out of 5 times of our visit, only 1 server had gloves put on when serving food. Don't come here. It's basically run as a side business to the attached Mountain Mike's Pizza. You'll be treated as a second class customer as the pizza customers come first. The counter for ice cream is not even open, so you have to go to the pizza side for help. Even though I came in while it was empty, I was told to wait while they took care of the 2 pizza customers that came in after me. I was finally able to order, but my milkshake was more milk than shake. You charge $7 for that? How can anyone enjoy a scoop of ice cream here? It's connected with a pizza shop, it's stuffy inside, and smells nothing like an in cream shop. I checked outside hoping for chairs with a table but it was nowhere to be seen so I had no choice but to eat my ice cream in that smelly dull shop. I ordered the double scoop waffle cone with the flavors of banana and toasted almond. My friend ordered the flavors of chocolate and vanilla. Ice cream was pretty good but the service was alright! The lady who was serving us didn't even know which was chocolate and I asked for pumpkin and she's like this ice cream is coffee. Very small shop connected to a Pizza Joint. Lots of parking. Prices for sundaes were not marked. We decided to split a sundae, as a special occasion treat. We ordered the Dusty Road ($6.50) chocolate showers ice cream with hot fudge, malt powder, whipped cream, and a cherry on top. We asked for 1/2 caramel & 1/2 fudge. They were happy to do the substitution. DH watched the lady put it together. She carefully layered the toppings between the ice cream. There were even toppings in the bottom. It might have been too much toppings, as we ran out of ice cream and still had some left! I liked the nuts (finely chopped almonds?)...thought they were a nice touch. The chocolate showers flavor is a vanilla based ice cream with tiny flecks of chocolate throughout. It's a step up from chocolate chips, since those can be quite hard when frozen. It wasn't the creamiest, but a good balance without being overly greasy, and the flavor was great. Very minor gripes: I do wish they used real glass dishes for eat in orders. It's just not as nice of an experience eating from a disposable cup. Other flavors looked really artificial, like the ube was dark purple. read more
