Lo Duca in Newkirk Plaza is one of those very "Brooklyn pizzeria" spots that just works. I stopped in on a weekday and it was the full mix you want to see, kids grabbing a slice after school, people coming off the train, a couple older guys posted up taking their time. It's kinda hectic in a good way, like the place never really turns off. The slice is solid everyday pizza (which is honestly what I'm usually looking for). The sauce is the star here, it's got that nice tangy/sweet thing going on and it doesn't taste flat like some places. Crust is good, not my absolute favorite in the city, but it holds up and you can fold it without everything sliding off, so we're good. Also don't sleep on the specialty slices and it was way better than I expected. Like, I came in for a normal slice and left thinking about that one instead. Not saying it's the single best slice in NYC or whatever (people get too intense about that), but if you want a legit neighborhood pizza spot you can actually go to all the time, Lo Duca totally hits. read more

By far one of my favorite Pizza spots in Brooklyn. This is my 3rd time here. Twice two years ago & came back once again 3 weeks ago. This is a nice local spot to have some pizza. It's located on the strip by the subway station. The staff is always friendly & they make you feel like you're at home. All the slices I've ordered were delicious and fresh. My favorite slice was the one that had pepperoni, sausage & ham on it. Great undercarriage & great thin crust. The sauce to cheese ratio was on point. None of the slices I've tried were greasy or floppy. I'm very picky when it comes to pizza & some places barely put marinara sauce onto their pizza. Who wants to eat pizza with very little sauce? Not me. I like that they allow you to bring drinks from next door. You can't go wrong with fresh squeeze juice and pizza to go with it. My husband and I wanted to grab a slice before heading to the city. He vaguely remembered this place from years back and it did NOT disappoint. He got two slices & I tried their lasagna slice -- the dollops of ricotta drew me in. Both were excellent. The crust was perfect. The sauce to cheese ratio was great. And they really packed on the meat & cheese on my lasagna slice. The bolognese tasted like they simmered it all day. Convenient location as it's right outside a subway stop. Crust texture is your classic NY slice. They do not deliver, but I think they are by far the beat choice around this neighborhood, so I'll make the extra walk to pick up a whole pie. Good thin pizza, even late at night! My friend and I got here a little bit before closing time. There was a decent selection even though it was like 8:30 and they close at 9. I chose a classic pepperoni slice and my friend got the grandma slice. My friend has been here before and said they have lots of selection, fresh, midday so definitely worth coming for lunch or a midday snack. They quickly reheated our slices and boxed it, and as we paid mentioned they popped in an extra slice since the one they gave us was on the small side. Like so many liminal spaces in New York, the pizzeria is a great equalizer. People of all backgrounds, personalities and socio-economic classes can rally around a good slice. I hold up Lo Duca as a prime example of a classic, true Brooklyn pizzeria. On a Friday afternoon I found the place bumpin' with middle schoolers elbowing each other for a slice, people getting off from work, and retirees casually enjoying their midday meal. The guys behind the counter, who are the same guys who have worked here for the last decade move quickly, heating up slices, taking orders, collecting payment. Aside from the usual slices you'll find at any pizzeria, they have an excellent shrimp with a creamy sriracha vodka sauce slice that is to die for. Their sicilian is also solid. The sauce is their strong point and is worth going out of your way for. The bread isn't the best pizza bread in my opinion, but that's totally up for debate. Nothing will get a Brooklynite to debate like a debate about where to get the best slice is. read more

Average slice for an average price. $6.50 for two slices and a bottle of water is like the old days, or just when you want something easy. Would I recommend this pizza joint? Maybe. The crust is crispy, there is plenty of cheese (my hands were covered in it when I finished), and there is plenty of herbs on this slice to end the Black Death. The guys were also pretty friendly. Would I run back here for more? No. I honestly think this is a good slice to grab before heading home after a busy workday, or if you live in the neighborhood. The table areas could've used some cleaning up (napkins and pizza crust) but the place was fairly clean and well lit. Instead of getting the bigger bang for my buck with those, I chose the BBQ chicken slice and a Margherita slices both standard Italian sized crust. The BBQ chicken slice was good only for a few bites before the sweetness of the BBQ sauce became unbearable . That was the only issue I had with that slice . The chicken itself was good and the crust and cheese beneath the chicken was also good . The Margherita slice on the other hand was really well balanced and flavorful with the subtle basil toppings . My family recommended this place; they've been coming here for years. We were a party of 11 and was fortunate to have the tables available. First off, the staff was friendly! The garlic bread was really good. They use fresh garlic and the bread was toasted just right. This was the NY style pizza I have missed all these years. It checked off all the boxes. Can't say enough good things about this place. So much better than Di Fara in many ways. 1) the people here are genuinely nice and -want- to give good service. 2) the pizza is outstanding. If you like your square pies burnt and teeth-breaking tough, go to Di Fara. Here, the crust is light and crisp, and the pie itself is full of flavor, with the right proportions of sauce and cheese. 3) your maximum wait time is 20-25 minutes versus 60+ minutes 4) you pay $21.00 for a delicious fresh pie that comes out relatively quickly versus $34.00 for a burnt pie that comes out after a demoralizingly long wait with nowhere to sit 5) the kitchen and counter are fantastically well-run. They keep everything rolling with efficient communication just through taking orders by phone 6) they pick up the phone and talk to you when you call 7) they remember who you are and smile I love Lo Duca. As someone who eats pizza every day I can safely say this is one of the best slices you will find, if not the best.

I'm giving this place a two-star rating because last time I ate here, both myself and my partner got sick from their food. Also, the Penne Shrimp Fradiavolo was such a TERRIBLE dish, that I really wish I wouldn't have wasted money on it. There was virtually no shrimp, and was an utter disappointment, and that's putting it nicely. Except for the Ziti and Spaghetti and Meatballs, their pasta dishes are mediocre at best. The eggplant parmigiana is also a joke, because for what very little eggplant they do give, it is not even fresh; it's old and rotted. Their specialty-slices are so overly expensive, that it just isn't worth getting them. The saving-grace for them, which is the reason why I gave them more than one star, is the fact that their Ziti dish is only $11. read more

I feel very lucky to live in the neighborhood of Lo Duca. I have never had a bad slice here. and you know it's going to be really good when all the guys behind the counter are blood relatives and look the same. You have one guy dedicated to stretching and topping pies. Another guy is dedicated to the register and taking care of customers. Another guy watching the pies in the oven, and so on. It is truly a beautiful and old-school operation to experience but most importantly, taste! The pizza is some of the best I've had in all 5 boroughs. Not only do they nail their classics (cheese, pepperoni, sicilian, margarita) but their specialty slices are just as good. And we're not talking just buffalo chicken. No, we're talking Thai Chile CALAMARI (!!!), Supreme, Honey Siracha Chicken, and even a Chopped Cheese pizza. It's a pretty amazing operation, steps from the Newkirk Plaza B/Q subway, and most importantly, they're here for the community.
