I am a bit skeptical with white table cloth restaurants, but when I was greeted at the front for a table for one I instantly felt welcomed and comfortable in a casual "authentic" feeling Italian restaurant. The chianti was $10.50 a glass, a bit expensive for what it was but the pour was very generous. I can't remember the vineyard but I wasn't too impressed. I heard the table behind me raving about the house wine so next time I will just order the house red. The whine selection was very small but sufficient enough because really, it's all about the food here. I got the pappardelle bolognese. It came out fast and hot. The noodles were good but I am curious if the pasta here is homemade because I love love love fresh homemade pasta and this didn't quite taste homemade. But don't get me wrong that's just me being an Italian food snob. The bolognese was amazing, the sauce had a little too much truffle oil but it was very tasty. Just like my Italian grandma used to make(except it was always shaved truffle never truffle oil). The portion seemed small for the price until I started eating it and it was so good and filling that I actually decided to not overstuff myself and save some to take home. This was a very good pizza place with many options for meat lovers and veggie lovers alike. My cousin, who is a pescatarian, was very satisfied with the eggplant pizza. The service was very good, the staff were kind and were constantly there to refill our cups which was nice since not all restraints have staff as readily available. The reason why I gave this place a 4-star rating despite the splendid service and food was because personally the crust for the pizza wasn't as flavorful as I personally like. Came here for my birthday last month which was awesome. The owners son surprised me with a yummy cannoli. Came back again to try some other stuff. And basically today we had a typical Italian Sunday brunch. (Tons of food) anywho... The Food: The food is good, really good if I might add. The best is the pizza, very delicious, linguine salmon is yummy and filling, eggplant basil is the best pizza there. An eggplant dish(Sicilian style, forgot the name) was yummy, the pastas are yummy, free bread in the beginning which is the same bread used to make the pizza. Nice and hot and fresh. The cannoli was perfect. Everything here is delicious and authentic hands down, there's never a wrong order just pick what sounds good and enjoy authentic Italian food. The restaurant and service: Alrighty so the restaurant is small not too big probably wouldn't recommend a big party there because it does get quite pact by the locals/regulars after 5:45ish maybe 6. But it's a cute restaurant. The service, when I was here on my birthday there was only one server and the hostess in here and the tables were filled and a line outside. I can tell he was under pressure I mean who wouldn't but it took him a good 15min to take our order and waited maybe 30min for our food. Which was the owners son(which he is very handsome and sweet) just needs to be faster with the service. But today the service was fine. Brought our food out not too long and she just needed to be more talkative and not so silent. No one even come to refill our waters The ravioli con pesto I've ordered wasn't to my expectation, even my son spits it back out after his first bite, and refuses to eat it. However on a recent occasion we went for my daughters birthday and I could not believe how incredibly rude the waiter was (50s, short hair, never seen him before.) I asked for some bread which never arrived so when I asked again it finally came but then I had to ask for olive oil, at which point I shook my head as he walked off. Seeing this, he turned around and said " Sorry did you say something?? I'm sure you said something???" We waited 40 minutes to be sat down after we were told the wait would be 20 minutes. Once seated we waited another 10 for the waiter to come to the table to greet us. We had already decided what we would order during the wait so we told the waitress and asked for bread. This is what they brought. We looked at the plate then looked at each other and burst out laughing! I asked if this was the norm. one slice of bread per table regardless of the number of people at the table. The Mother wanted to come to Lo Coco's again for a serious dinner with me and The Siblings (The Sibling and The Sibling-in-Law). The Mother and I were the first in the party to arrive. We were greeted by one of the servers who gave us a choice to sit at any table that was available. There was already one party eating their meal and all the other tables were available. I deferred to The Mother to choose the table, she chose one by the windows. Meanwhile, I receive a text from The Sibling to put our names on the list. I text back to The Sibling that we were already seated. When they showed up, it turns out the server knows them. So I expect we shall receive very attentive service, right?!?! And that we did. Starters and Appetizers. We started with Mushrooms Caruso, Palermo Style sautéed mushrooms with in butter, parsley, and lemon juice. Best sautéed mushrooms I have ever had. I had a small green salad while Les Siblings had Lo Coco's Emancipata Salad: Danish Blue Cheese, Pecans, Currants, and Kalamata Olivers over salad greens. Along with The Mother, we munched on the homemade bread in-between. Main Courses. La Mere and I each had our own plate Fettucine Campagnola: Papparadelle noodles in a light cheese sauce trimmed with sliced Parma Prosciutto and green peas. Les Siblings shared a plate of Linguine Sugo (homemade Italian tomato sauce) with meatballs. Apres Diner. Les Siblings and I shared a plate of homemade Tiramisu with decaffinated coffee for me and regular coffee for them. Lo Coco's reminds me of some of the family-owned cafes and restaurants back in Italy I had the experience and pleasure of dining. Lo Coco's reminds me of two family run restaurants, one in Assisi famous for their pork roast and another one in old Rome where the English singer Sting dined at. The staff at Lo Coco's are family members who cook, take menu orders and serve the clients. Lo Coco's is well-known for their handmade, homemade pizzas. I AM IN LOVE WITH THEIR BREAD. OMG. You have no idea how much I had to control myself to stop eating all the bread, or only eating the bread. We had the Gnocchi [something] Pesto Creme, which was delicious. The pasta was soft and complimented the sauce. Not that big such that it tasted like a big glob of starch, which was perfect. ($14.75?) We also had the Mussel appetizers. They were okay - not so delicious that I would rave about it, but they were in this tomato, garlic, basil-ish broth that tasted yummy if you drank the broth with the mussels. Plus they gave a lot of it, which made it better. I thought that it would have been enough if we just had one entree and one appetizer, since that's what I usually do if I go with a friend. But it actually wasn't enough, I left still kinda hungry - so I recommend getting two entrees + appetizer if your stomach is doing the grumbles. The staff was so courteous! I don't think I ever had to ask for more water, and our waiter was nice, super friendly, and helpful. In the end, go! ESP if you're a big fan of bread like me. Bread bread bread! read more

I didn't have a good experience here. I came here for a friend's birthday dinner. The atmosphere is very intimate and dim-lighted, but the staff was very unfriendly towards us. I noticed another party come in quite some time after we did and they got served bread immediately. We only got served bread after I asked for some and they asked whether we ordered pasta or salad, which each of us did. I noticed the staff never smiled at us and never came by to ask if everything was going well. I had the Pennoni Sugo with Meatballs. I had high expectations for the meatballs. I thought they were homemade but I'm not entirely sure. The meatballs were kind of a let down. I don't know what it was. I think there was just a lot going on in the meatballs with seeds and grains, I'm not sure, but I wasn't satisfied. My friend got gnocchi con pesto creme and we all agreed that her dish was really good. Although the staff was not very friendly to us, they were nice enough to give the birthday girl some homemade tiramisu on the house. We also all agreed that the tiramisu was fantastic. I've been here three times and have been impressed by the taste and service each time. The pastas may be substituted for gluton-free gnocchi. To start, the toasted bread paired beautifully with the olive oil. I love the tortellini campagnola (little dumpings, mushroom sauce, prosciutto, peas). As for the pizzas, my companions were raving about the rich flavors of the palermitana (homemade sausages + mushrooms), Alaska (smoked salmon), and vegetarian (artichokes + mushrooms). If it was possible to give zero stars as a review on Yelp, I would. But I have to give some kind of rating to proceed, so one star it is. My husband and I went to LoCoco's on Valentine's Day. It was our first time trying the Berkeley location, and we were super pumped -- we lived right by the Oakland location and have enjoyed many wonderful meals on Piedmont Ave. So when we walked in at 5:35 and were told that there would be a wait, probably til 8pm, we were a little surprised but OK with it. It was Valentine's Day, after all. So I gave the hostess my name and phone number, telling her we lived down the street and would come back ASAP. She promised to call when the wait was about 15 minutes so we'd have time to walk back. Fast forward 2.5 hours. We are still sitting at home, waiting for the LoCoco's hostess to call us at 8pm. I decide to call the restaurant to check in on our reservation. The hostess tells me that 'she tried to call us' and read me my name and an incorrect phone number. I told her no, this is my phone number ... ##########. She says oh yes, I have you circled here, I don't know what happened, we're slammed, come right on over and we'll figure it out. I ask if we are going to have to wait more, and the now incredibly rude hostess tells me that the restaurant is busy and I am not helping the situation by keeping her on the phone and away from the clients. OK, great ... so we walk back to LoCoco's. When we walk in the door, the same hostess is seating another couple -- why she didn't hold the table for us like implied, I have no idea. So I tell the hostess we are there and she tells us oh sorry, you'll have the next table. We stand directly in front of her hostess desk to wait. In the meantime, she FORGETS ABOUT US AGAIN. She seats TWO OTHER COUPLES right in front of us! When I approach her, she looks totally flustered and says oh yes, yes, here there's another table getting up right now. So after about three hours of waiting, we finally are seated -- in the least desirable table right next to the kitchen where servers are rushing back and forth, but whatever. We are seated. My husband and I placed our order -- one mussels appetizer, two pastas, and two diet cokes. The beverages, bread and oil, and mussels were fantastic and came out pretty quickly. Then we sat. And sat. For about 30 minutes, waiting for our food. Then our server comes over to our table and asks us, dead serious, 'Oh do you guys want dessert still or something?" SHE FORGOT OUR DINNERS. HOW? NO CLUE. At this point I am so livid I just stand up and walk out of the restaurant, and my husband had to talk to the server and manager about this embarrassingly poor service that not only ruined our Valentine's Day, but also solidified the fact that we will never be dining at LoCoco's in Berkeley again, and everyone that asks will hear this story. Bottom line? Food was good. Probably 4 stars at least, from what I actually got to eat. Service, both at the front desk and in the restaurant, deserves zero stars. read more

We've been coming here for 30+ years after first meeting the owner at his Pleasant Hill location in the late 70's. Many birthdays, graduations & anniversaries have been celebrated at this place with friends & family and I have to say that our experience last night was less than stellar. As a matter of fact, it was a major disappointment. We have always compared this restaurant to others in LoCoco's ability to make everyone -everyone- feel warm & welcome. Not so last night. We were sitting in a sea of people and were practically ignored -- no "how is it?"; the 2nd drink that was ordered never arrived (mmm, pizza w/water); and when we weren't even finished, the waitress simply reached over to remove our plates, then said: "oh, not done?"... Meal itself was so-so: bread way too salty, pizza not up to their old standards as was the main dish. Think we'll just stick to take-out pizza when I am not making my own. This is the second year we come to celebrate my birthday. My bf has been raving about the inferno pizza because it has a nice kick to it so of course he got that again after a whole year. I got the tortellinis with pesto although I wanted to make a change and they didn't let me so that was sad but I know some chefs can be a bit touchy about changing anything on their menu which was fine. I just brushed it off. My mom had the tagliatelle porcini and her hubby had the tortellini campagnole which has peas and prosciutto with a cream sauce and that looked delicious. I got the meatballs, the olive, basil, and tomato pizza, and the meat tortellini with pesto. The food was sensational. The pizza had the perfect Italian feel, the meatballs were deliciously prepared in their custom tomato sauce, and the tortellini with pesto was a blissful combination. However, there were two big turnoffs at this place: the price and the service. My bill at the end of the night was 47 dollars, which is quite hefty. The amount of tortellini I got for 19 bucks was insufficient. On top of that, the service was subpar. After I was seated, it took 10 minutes for a waiter to approach our table to give us water and take our order. Additionally, the server was reckless with his reach, consistently bumping into me to grab my plates. When I asked the server for a second helping of bread, he told me to slow down because 'the entree will fill me up'. Surprise, surprise, it didn't. The food at this place is amazing, but is greatly overshadowed by the service (or lack thereof) and the gaudy price tag. read more

My favorite is the Pappardelle Bolognese and the Porcini in a light cream sauce the traditional Italian meat sauce/ ragu is well balanced , the pasta is Al dente and perfect. Every time you order you know you're going to have a delicious meal. They're consistent with their presentation of food. Its definitely a hidden gem of Berkeley. The decor was warm, intimate and had that family feel to it. We started off with two vegetarian salads which were delicious. They had romaine lettuce, thinly sliced mushrooms, mozarella cheese, olives and artichoke hearts with a vinagrette dressing. My mom ordered a pizza with pesto, mushrooms and cheese pizza which was yummy. Thin crisp and crunchy crust, with yummy gooey cheese and thinly sliced mushrooms. I love mushroom pizza!!! My Auntie and i got the bolognese which had thick noodles with a nice homemade thick meat sauce. The best Bolognese ever! Eventhough I have never had it before, My uncle was saying you will not find a better Bolognese anywhere. This was the first meal that i actually ate SLOW so i could savor every delicious bite. The delicous tender meat in a thick tomatoey sauce with thinly thick noodles that have such a light taste to them. AMAZING About halfway thru our dinner Gilberto came out to see how our meal was and i got to shake hands with him and express my gratitude for this fine meal. I heard that the Lococos in Oakland is owned by his sister. I will have to check it out when imma in the area. My other thoughts were that the prices were a bit expensive and it seems hard to get a seat in here since it is so busy and not to mention the restaurant isn't very big. I'd give this place one star except the food is really pretty good. But the owner/chef is a total jerk and has ruined both out attempts at eating here. The first time, I tried to order the smoked salmon for my (very well-behaved) 3-year old. The salmon came with lemon and capers. I knew my child would not eat it that way so I requested that the salmon be served without these t hings or with them on the side. The chef refused. After much back and forth with the waitress, I politely informed her that my child needed to eat and that I would be happy to go across to Safeway and buy some plain smoked salmon. The chef the brought the salmon out to the table with his hand blocking other diners from viewing (gasp!) the naked salmon. Puh-lease. Even that's too much artistic perfection. The second time we ate there, we ordered a pizza. After 20 minutes, we asked the server how much longer it would be. "Oh, it's coming soon. We're a bit backed up in the kitchen." O.k., I've worked in the restaurant business before, I understand backed up. But a 1/2 an hour went by and still, no pizza. When I asked again, the server said "we're doing the best we can." Yeah, I don't think so. Meanwhile, take out pizzas were flying out the door. I'm sorry, if you are that backed up, you shut down the to go orders until you take care of your seated clientele. After 45 minutes, our pizza arrived. No apologies. When I asked to see the owner/chef, he refused to come out of the kitchen. Nice, huh?
