    Patate Pizza

Cugini Restaurant will always have my heart. I love frequenting Solano Ave. in Berkeley and with the recent Solano Stroll, it was so exciting to see the entire Solano Ave. shut down and filled with life. So many families, businesses, and community moments celebrating local. Cugini offered Al fresco dining for the stroll and it was really great to be able to sit outside, people watch, enjoy the festival, while having a delicious (and special) lunch spread. The staff was truly amazing on such a busy day and ensured everything was set for our little to enjoy their time as well. We ordered a few house margaritas drink-wise, and the Fritti Plate, Homemade Meatball, and Classic Caesar to start. We also ordered one of each personal pizza options including the Margherita, Pepperoni, Sausage, and Patete (potato). Everything came incredibly timely and efficient. The homemade meatball presentation was unique and created table fun (and photos), the Caesar was crisp and fresh, and the pizzas were absolutely perfect. Crisp, flavorful, and just the right amount of food. In the Fritti Plate, there were churros, a fun surprise for a nice way to end the meal. Overall, would love to come back for lunch or dinner here. Fair pricing, outside of the stroll there is typically metered parking on Solano, and great energy. We can't wait to come back!

They ran out of scallops risotto so I subbed for prawns

Located on the popular destination known as Solano Ave in Albany. Parking can be scarce but there's plenty of street parking available on the side roads, if necessary. The decor is golden era film poster style pictures and simple table seating. Dim lighting and casual attire. I've been here a handful of times now and haven't been let down yet. This last experience, I ordered the risotto with scallops but they ran out of scallops so I requested prawns instead. The grill on the prawns was exceptional and the risotto wasn't bad at all.. one of the members in our party ordered the salmon dish and had zero complaints. The only thing I can mention that wasn't ideal to the evening was the seafood penne was a bit chewy/overcooked. They may have threw the seafood in too early resulting in the mishap but i won't take a star away. We actually had 2 orders of the penne that were identically over. Our lovely waitress took it off of the bill and gave a sincere apology. She offered us to order something else being that the plates were nearly untouched. Our night was coming to an end so we just paid the tab and went on our way. We made sure to let our waitress know that we will definitely be frequenting this place again and we understand that it wasn't her fault. Things happen and we enjoy this restaurant..

The service was terrible. People who came 15 minutes after us got their pasta before us. If the food we ordered was a dish that takes longer to prepare, they should have let us know before hand. The crabcakes appetizer took 20 minutes to bring out, and it was probably the only good thing on the menu. We waited another 20 minutes for the main dishes. My husband's linguine clams was sitting in sauce, and it tasted like wine instead of red sauce. I ordered scallops risotto, it was awful. It had no sauce, no flavor, and it was mushy paste. My scallops were brown and looked like they were deep fried instead of being seared in a pan. Trader Joes Scallop Risotto is a 10 compared to this place: at least it has flavor. The food I had Cugini was the worst Italian food I ever had and the waiter was terrible. The bartender gave better service and we didn't even order drinks. This place is over priced and the food is not worthy of the wait. We will see what our chickens have to say about the leftovers.

The food, ambiance and service is second to none. Jenny and I have had most of what Cugini has on their menu. We have never had a bad meal. Armando and Becka are always at their best, making you feel at home. Stephanie, Mia, Angel, Marco and Jesus work as a team in making sure all of their guests are taken care of. Thank you Armamdo for making the best Martinis in town. Simply fabulous place. Love you guys.

Quaint Italian restaurant on Solano Ave. we were seated quickly but the the remainder of the service was a bit slow and it was not that busy on a Tuesday night. The restaurant was a bit noisy, so not a great place for conversation. The food was good, nice size portions. They brought fresh bread with balsamic and olive oil. I would for sure come back

Ordered slices of pepperoni, Julian, and Spinaci Aglio. All were amazing. Thin, crisp crust, tangy pizza sauce, good olive oil, great cheese pull. Simple ingredients coming together for a satisfying and piping hot bite. Pepperoni drips with the golden orange oil, characteristic of a solid pep slice. Spinaci has just enough garlic that works perfectly with the mild spinach. The star of Julian is the near crunchy kale complemented by pops of sausage. Place your order inside and pick up at the window just outside when they call out your order. I ordered the She-Wolf, a pizza topped with tomato sauce, garlic confit, capers, tiny Kalamata olives, and generous dollops of fresh burrata added after baking. The standout here is the sauce. It's incredibly fresh, bright, and vibrant--tasting of ripe tomatoes rather than simply serving as a backdrop for the toppings. The combination of briny olives and capers with the creamy burrata worked beautifully, and the garlic confit added just enough sweetness and depth without overpowering the pie. Every ingredient felt thoughtfully chosen and of high quality. The crust is where my opinion diverges a bit from the local consensus. While it was nicely baked with good chew and structure, I personally prefer the more aggressively charred, blistered, bubbly crust you get at Benchmark. Rose's crust was lighter and more restrained, which many people may actually prefer, but I found myself wishing for a little more wood-fired character and crunch. That said, this is still a very good pizza and an easy recommendation. The ingredients are top-notch, the flavors are balanced, and the She-Wolf is a unique pie that stands out from the usual Margherita-and-pepperoni lineup. Even if Benchmark remains my personal favorite, I can absolutely understand why so many people consider Rose Pizzeria one of Berkeley's best. As far as service goes my server at Rose was lovely and attentive, and I really enjoyed sitting on the back patio on such a lovely day. 4 stars.

We were greeted by the friendliest server (a tall guy with curly hair whose name I unfortunately didn't get but shout-out to him) who asked us if we had any questions about the menu. My friend and I had already glanced at the menu when we checked in with the host, so we pretty much knew what we wanted. I did ask our server about crust options though and ended up going with the New York style because I didn't have the stomach capacity for the slightly thicker options like Detroit but perhaps next time with a bigger group! We ordered The Standard, which seemed like a good choice because of the diverse, balanced toppings, and the chicories & beets salad. The salad arrived quickly, and the pizza was brought to our table soon after. I liked how refreshing and crisp the salad was, but the pizza was really what I wanted. It was everything I wanted in a pizza - definitely the best choice of the lineup imo. The crust was so soft and pillowy I couldn't resist devouring it all and leaving no trace. In contrast, we also tried a seasonal vegan pizza prepared in the thinner-than-Sicilian Grandma style - this was also delicious and the crust was satisfyingly crunchy. We appreciated the quality ingredients and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The arancini balls were pretty good but the stars were the pizzas. Service was efficient, helpful, and friendly - Laura herself was on hand to make recommendations and answer all our questions. The space had a nice vibe and was clean and comfortable. Parking wasn't too bad - found a spot two blocks away. Will return to try more pizzas, as well as a pasta dish. If you're ever in the area, I do recommend that you check it out. Since the only other pie I'd previously had there was the brown butter sage -- delicious, though I've learned lemon on pizza simply isn't my thing -- I decided to go with their classic Benchmark margherita instead. It absolutely delivered. This is Neo-Neapolitan pizza done right: bright, fresh tomato sauce, creamy mozzarella, torn basil, and a beautifully balanced crust with a perfectly thin base, nicely charred underside, and those airy, leopard-spotted edges that make wood-fired pizza so satisfying. Simple, restrained, and incredibly well executed. It was an unusually warm evening, so I opted to sit outside. My only real complaint is that the tables closest to the street sit noticeably on a slant, making it a bit of a challenge to keep plates and glasses from slowly sliding downhill throughout the meal. A small detail, but worth noting. That said, the staff were genuinely lovely and welcoming, and the overall experience was exactly what I was hoping for. One final recommendation: do yourself a favor and ask for a side of olive oil for dipping the crusts. It's the perfect finishing touch. I'll absolutely be back the next time the craving strikes.

The takeout experience is mostly good, but a few things could be better. I'd like the option to remove onions from my takeout pizza. And: Lately the chopped salad has been presented in a plastic takeout box with the ingredients separated into other plastic containers. This leaves the customer to basically create the salad from the ingredients, then deal with a bunch of plastic waste. Better to go back to the old method: compostable box with the ingredients tossed by Benchmark, giving the customer the option to have Benchmark toss the dressing or do it themselves. When I order an expensive salad, I expect a salad, not a collection of separate ingredients for me to mix myself. And the plastic detracts from the experience and adds waste to the environment.
