These guys are great. I recently moved into a new home in SF, and having previously used LMI in the East Bay (they are based in Berkeley) decided to go with them again. As always, the staff at LMI answers the phone, answers any questions, schedules service (i.e. in-home installation etc.) at MY convenience, and is altogether professional and easy to deal with. Compare this to the horror stories you may hear about AT&T or Comcast. For ~$40 month I am getting their PHLO+ service, which utilizes the phone lines. And it's fast, I'm clocking 18.5 Mbps DL and 1.15 UL speeds. Month-to-month contract, easy peezy. I would definitely recommend LMI. read more

We have had LMI internet and phone service for several years. In December 2019 there were big communication problems due to the heavy rains that caused havoc with the supporting AT&T DSL service. Julio of LMI was extremely competent and helpful, and it made all the difference at a particular moment when good communications were essential for our household. LMI is rad. They are local, awesome, reliable and totally worth their very VERY reasonable rates. My mom has been a customer of theirs for ages. I have both of my business's webpages hosted through them. Everyone that works there is hella smart and they answer the phone! Whoa! Magic! Also they handle my internet. Actually Gary I did call you back twice towards the end of May, when I finally had a time in the middle of the day to get hold of you. We work from 8-5, often in areas without cell reception, and have been swamped with work and hiring a new employee. But you didn't return my call after that. To respond to your comments, I never said "you should know" about having an answering machine. Throughout the first couple weeks of this process none of your employees asked me that question about having one. At the very beginning I was told there was a short on the line. I was here two different times when LMI came to check the outside box and they did not ask to come in to see the set up inside. Then Garrett (?) came out and checked everything and said I was set to go. But the next day I still couldn't get my messages. I had several phone calls with Julio (in the middle of my working with a client) and one time he was quite rude, which he later apologized to me for. He also said that I would be given credit for all the time I had lost messages and had no access. This was from the 11th to the 29th. Then I see you gave me $20 credit. Seriously? As I said in the previous write-up, in years past I was happy with your service. But the mixed messages and time that I spent on this was very frustrating. As I said, no one asked me at the beginning if I had an answering machine on my phone. I have never used it since I always had service with you. I also have internet service with you, but am sad that it is so slow and you say you won't get to my street to run the lines that would make it faster. . Someone in the LMI office said that Sonic would get me faster speed. But then I talked to a Sonic guy working on the street and he told me the story of how LMI goes through Sonic and Sonic can't give me faster service either. After a number of service calls over two weeks, LMI fixed the problem with my service. I was super pleased by their professionalism, hard work, and competence in fixing something that was the fault of bad wiring in my condo (that had nothing to do with them). LMI is a Berkeley institution and has been around as long as I can remember (long). A local internet provider is worth something. A few months ago I switched to LMI after years and years with ATT. LMI has the advantage that they provide month-to-month service; ATT doesn't. Astoundingly, the LMI service that I get now (in Piedmont) is exactly what I had before with ATT with all its quirks and bugs.They call it something else but it still is ATT's DSL line. Even the tech guy who came out was from ATT, and the speed is identical, ~3 mbps max. The only difference is that the LMI service is twice as much as ATT's. Granted, the LMI folks are sweet, responsive and knowledgeable, and add some human touch to the internet provider experience but in the end you have to decide whether this is worth it to you. Small town customer service! Friday at 3 pm: My internet went down. I called, they walked me through it. We got a signal. Yay! I put my computer away. 10 minutes later they called me back - they detected it was not working. The technician came out within 15 minutes! Installed a new dish to my roof. Done by 5:30. SAME.DAY. Their speed varies depending on where you live. I am in the Maxwell Park neighborhood and I'm getting 4.4Mbps download and 1.13 Mbps upload. I can run Netflix, youtube, and normal internet browsing. Got fiber installed - the install is a bit more detailed than regular cable - but the speed made it well worth it. My internet stopped working a little while after it was installed and I called and left a message for tech support. I got a call about 30 mins later - with an apology that it wasn't sooner. A tech guy was at my place in about 20 minutes and he was really cool when we both found out it was my screw-up. Either by phone or in person, I've dealt with 4 people from this company today and everyone of them was super nice and totally professional. I had a problem with getting an internet connection after PG&E was turned off in my neighborhood for the day. I called LMI and they walked me through the steps I should take with my router and got my internet connection back. The next day I got a call back from them to make sure everything was working okay. I was pretty pleased with their response and follow up. I'm also happy to be using a local internet provider instead of giving an increasing amount of money to a big corporation. read more

Warning: This review might not be all that useful to readers seeking information on basic Internet service. I'm a colo customer. I've had a personal server in lmi.net's data center in Berkeley for a couple years now. I'm pretty happy with the service and the value that I'm getting. As others have noted, lmi.net has a very responsive and personable staff, and all of my interactions (admittedly not that many) have been good ones. I chose lmi.net partly on the basis of cost, and also on their physical location, fairly close to where I live (I considered the latter to be important for my first colo experience). sonic.net, another independent ISP that I also think very highly of, was the runner-up. If I could ask for one thing, that'd be a way for after-hours access to the data center so I don't need to factor office hours into my server maintenence activity planning. But in general I'm a happy colo camper. read more

I moved into a new apartment last month and was excited to try an ISP that is local, small, and environmentally conscious. Lmi.net seems to have a great reputation on yelp. After years of dealing with Comcast, Centurylink, and At&t, they sounded like a dream come true. After losing my service order, and 3 botched service installation appointments, it took 3 weeks for Lmi.net to set up service at my apartment. Once set up, speeds ranged from mediocre at about 1/2 of the expected speeds (3-4 Mbps when I was told to expect 6-10 mbps) to an insanely slow speed reminiscent of the days of dial up (.5 Mbps). I received no response to my request to cancel service, though I was never again contacted for payment. Maybe the reasons for my cancellation were just that obvious. Needless to say, I was extremely dissappointed with Lmi.net. I'm giving them 2 stars because the techs and customer service reps I talked to were all very friendly and helpful, but a good customer service experience doesn't make up for a lack of professionalism. As much as it pains me to do so, I've gone back to Comcast. I despise their sales tactics and terrible customer service, but at least now I have a usable internet connection with only one service appointment and a wait of under a week. read more

We've had LMi internet for a year, and it's fabulous. We were worried at first that, being a little bit far from the source of the signal, we'd have slow or spotty internet--not so. We've only had to reset our router about one time in the past year (knock on wood). I'd say more about the fine service, but I can only speak to when we set up the internet--it was great then, but we haven't had any problems since, so that's all I have! This is easily, so far, the most reliable internet I've experienced. Oh, and I should probably write a separate review for this, but Authorized Computer Repair, in the same building, is also helpful. They stayed calm while I had a my-computer-just-blinked-out-for-no-reason fiasco a while back, rented me a nice computer, and overall were great. I always recommend LMi/Authorized Computer Repair to my friends who are lucky enough to be in the service area--if there's a great local business, why bother going to the big guys? read more

I'm a new customer as of this week and have had such a great experience with them so far, customer happiness-wise. Their weekend call-back feature got them calling me back within 10 minutes of my message, and the guy helped verify that a modem I found on Craigslist would suit my needs so I wouldn't have to buy their brand new one. When the guy came to install, we found out the modem required configuring. So they took it back to their office, left us a loaner, and brought it back working the next morning. Best ISP I've ever had. They actually took the initiative to call AT&T and have a rep come out to deal with an internet speed problem at my house. The repairman showed up and spent 45 minutes locating and fixing the issue. I've never had service like that from my previous provider. Been with them about 2 years now. For two years, I've struggled with a very obscure and hard (for me) to solve problem involving my LAN and Sonos equipment. When I finally decided to look to someone with expertise to solve this issue, and found LMI with Yelp, after a brief conversation, I decided to retain their services, fully expecting a bill for several hours and the replacement cost of hardware, AND the possibility that the problem would nevertheless persist. I have been using LMI for probably 10 years and I absolutely LOVE them!!! Wow! An ISP who calls you back? An ISP who calls to alert you about possible problems? LMI is all this and more. I am not a techie by any means, but I can usually follow instructions, and the people at LMI are grrrrrreat teachers. They listen to my problem, ask thoughtful questions, stay calm, never act impatient or as if I am an idiot. Nope-- they give great help. When I signed up, I was told that I--living almost due West on San Pablo Ave.--fall on their service-area border, so expect some slowness. The two reviewers in Oakland must be closer, i.e., within the area. Before I was hooked up, I used the nearby library computers; speed was good. Since acquiring service, e-mailing, etc. is excruciatingly slow. I went with LMI because I wish to support local businesses, but this second-rate service is unacceptable. read more

I have to share my happiness here, because of the amazing service LMI has provided me (and many others, I'm sure). We wanted DSL and were excited there was an independent option to have Internet access sans AT&T. They had to work with AT&T, getting them to do their part, and that process took a month! We were desperate for the web, and I ALMOST considered just giving in to what was convenient and quick. Then I realized it was AT&T who was the worst, with their epic 1-800 merry-go-round and their customer anti-service-let's-just-talk-about-how-I'm-doing-my-job. They charge you and waste your time to no avail. LMI, on the other hand, are lovely people that followup, arrive timely, take no time to do their thing, answer ALL your questions, and the service is super strong and reliable!! It's worth the battle to completely discontinue AT&T "services"! Jackie was extremely kind and even offered their offices for us to get Internet while the battle was going on. I have always used and recommend the "big guys" for internet but now I ONLY recommend LMI because unlike the "big guys" they aren't too busy to talk to me and help with issues. We've been using LMI since 1996 (dial-up then!) and we highly recommend them. We had to switch providers when we moved but still have our e-mailboxes there.
