The atmosphere fits the historic hotel, and while the cocktails and beers were perfectly fine, nothing really stood out. I was the only one in our group who ordered a cocktail, while the others had beer, and the bill still felt surprisingly high. While restaurant and bar prices seem to be climbing everywhere these days, it certainly wasn't a great value. Later that evening, after returning from an art walk and realizing we hadn't had dinner, we stopped back in hoping for a quick pizza and a couple of beers. The place was packed. The waitress, who was friendly and clearly trying her best, suggested we check the back area to see if any tables were available. We couldn't find one, so we returned to the front and eventually a small table opened up. By that point, the atmosphere felt less like a hotel bar and more like a club that had sold too many tickets. We ordered two beers and a pepperoni pizza to share. The pizza was honestly one of the worst I've ever been served. The crust was bad. The cheese was bad. The pepperoni was bad. I know that sounds harsh, but it was genuinely difficult to eat. At one point I watched my daughter spit out the pepperoni and try to choke down the cheese and crust. Neither of us came close to finishing it. The waitress was busy but pleasant throughout, and I don't fault the service. In fact, she was smart enough not to ask how we liked the food. Adding to the frustration was the automatic 20% service charge. With food of that quality, seeing that charge on the bill felt like adding insult to injury. Between the mediocre drinks, the inedible pizza, and the extra fees, the value simply wasn't there. The historic setting and hardworking staff are the only reasons this review isn't even lower. If you're staying at the Biltmore, enjoy a drink if you'd like, then walk a block or two and find dinner somewhere else. You'll almost certainly be happier.

Looking back at the Photos, I can't exactly recall what we ordered... Was it a whiskey sour? Was it a paper plane?? Honestly, Who cares! They tasted great. I was sitting across from a beautiful woman. And we were responsibly adulting. What more could a guy ask for?? I'm glad you asked! After a long car ride in, sipping on water, then the first few sips of my cocktail, I suddenly had to go... Luckily, the restrooms are located just adjacent to the bar area and DAMN are they clean!! Hey, if a bar restroom is well taken care of, you know the place has Class.... And Bar Magnolia has the Class to Match! Of course, there is bar stool seating at the bar... (I usually prefer sitting at the bar as there's always some great stories to be heard and when it time to order another round, you can literally just cut out the... Middle Man (Aka waiting for your server to come check back in) In addition to the bar top stools, there are also low top tables, and a few couch-chairs with a low top table for more intimate conversations. Besides those $18 craft cocktails, a short, well Curated list of bubbles, vino and draft beers are all up for grabs. Unfortunately, we had stopped to eat before we arrived (bad move on our part), but next time, and THERE WILL BE A NEXT TIME, we will definitely partake in their food menu (cause damn, did it look GOOD!) So whether you are a guest of Hotel Figueroa, you are leaving the Crypto Arena after a concert and want to paint the town red, or you are simply just wanting to sit, relax and enjoy a nice cocktail at a classy, upscale, but not so pretentious Cocktail Lounge... I got an expresso martini with tequila and it was perfect - not too sweet, which is how I like it. I even got a mezcal margarita, which was good too! They do have a few snack options to nibble on - we got the yucca fries and they were good! The portion size is small so it's definitely not a place to go if you are hungry. Being a hotel lobby bar, it is quite expensive but if you are staying in the hotel, it's pretty convenient.

I can only imagine how nuts it is here on 3/17. One other thing you might notice, their TVs are dated. So much so that you can see stats from a game televised from three years ago on the screens. One of these aforementioned nocks and/or crannies is Bar Jackalope, situated right in the heart of Downtown LA on 7th & Grand Ave. It offers one of my favorite features in life... a secret. It's tucked away behind an unassuming passage, posing as a hallway for the historic Seven Grand. When you walk in, you are greeted with Speakeasy decor and a wide variety of whiskey often difficult to find at other bars, even the ones with a large spirits selection. The cherry on top is that you can have a cigar with your whiskey, the way God intended, instead of just drinking like a savage. There are fewer joys in life than a good quality whiskey and a nice fat cigar that could give you a buzz even if you weren't drinking. But there is a caveat. Bar Jackalope is only open during prime time going-out days, think Thurs-Sun, so it is always busy and can be a hassle to deal with, even if you live in Downtown. In addition, although the place is filled with beautiful and fun people it is often too loud to have fun with someone you don't already know, unless body language is your modus operandi. What can I say, as I sit her indulging in the bliss of puffing some delicious smoke followed by drinking some delicious whiskey? In life sometimes you just have to take the good with the bad and remember that in the end we're all still pretty lucky. Stay focusing on the positive my friends....
