Walked in on a Friday evening around 8:30-9. There was no line to get in and the place didn't seem crowded. My husband and I walked around before we decided to grab a drink at the bar. A couple of the machines took our coins but the games never started which was a bummer but we just moved on. We later saw people playing on them so it was probably something we did wrong. Eighrytwo has such a good vibe; my wife and I came here for the first time, and it was so nostalgic. It took us back to our childhood days, playing old-school video games and pinball machines. They have a variety of drinks, and the vibe was fantastic. They offer their own coins that work with these machines, and you can exchange your money for them at the bar or the kiosk machine. The DJ was playing 70's or 80's music when we arrived. The vibe was so good that my friend and I began dancing. Another person who was there joined, and we kept like that for half an hour. I had their Non Alcoholic option, which was great. We did end up playing one or two games. Playing pac man brought back memories! Came here after the Mexico Vs. South Korea game. The atmosphere is really cool, not crowded at all. The arcade games make for something else to do other than stand and talk. I have gone to this place several times in my life but no more than eight but definitely more than two. It is always a blast because of the people that you meet, even briefly. Like this one time I was playing a "vintage" teenage mutant ninja turtle arcade game with a friend and a couple approached us. One of the pair explained that they did not have much experience with the game, and I repackaged their statement with humorous understanding, "so what. you are saying is that you are dead weight." They laughed and the speaker of the two said, "exactly." I felt relief that my joke landed, or at least did not offend. For me, this is the value of the joint: A place where you can find others to romp and play with, an adult sandbox per say that lubricates fun times with alcohol and "vintage" arcade games. I use quotation marks to describe the games as vintage because some of the games were cutting edge when I was growing up (like CapCom vs. Marvels) and others were old school at the same time like PacMan and Space Invaders. So it seems wrong to group all these into the umbrella term of vintage. I think a more appropriate way to describe the arcade games at EightyTwo would be nostalgic or retro, or maybe even joy-stick driven games. This place is not, in my opinion, a local neighborhood bar. It is not a place where people will know your name, it is not a dive where you can settle and chat, in short, it is not a comfortable bar to go and relax. Instead, it is bar that aims to entertain and engage. It is bar that buzzes with sounds and blings with screens on walls. It is place where you go to enhance the night, not a place to serve as the background for a quiet night out. And again, this is true because of the nostalgic games and the people who attend the event to either play or mingle. First, I gotta focus on the people. The last time I went I played a personal favorite Bubble Bobble. Basically, you shoot marbles (bubbles) unto an accumulation of bobbles to clear them, a la Tetris. So I put my quarter in ready to play the game I purchased. Another person just stepped in and played on the other joystick. I did not know this but when you play the first round of the game, there is a split screen-- we had become rivals. He had one the game, and now he played subsequent rounds.He had taken my chance to play, with only a head up-nod, when he approached. I played again, to confirm my initial split screen theory, and indeed, one quarter allows for two players to play the first round and only one can carry on, the winner. I felt he was a little rude to take the shot against me, when he did not ask, but rather lurked for his opportunity. On another occasion, a fellow patron asked me for tokens to play Mario Versus Donkey Kong because he saw me playing it. We played for a few rounds with my tokens. Here I appreciated the shared play because I was invited into the concept that depended on my quarters. So yes there are some people that go here, not for the drinks, or to meet others, but to play the retro games. I forgot to mention up to this point that there is a room with arcade games and other rooms with pinballs. If you need a break from the arcade and pinball games, and all that comes with them, there is an ample patio that allows for escape, smoking, conversation, and relief. I love the mural of Chun Lee and Blanka. They are not engaged in mortal combat but they seem to be nearing the moment of fight on street. It was not juvenile, the mural, like the game is, it was a sophisticated take on the common battle driven narrative. I would go here on a Friday night or Saturday night to get the full effect. The bar has video game theme drinks. My favorite is the Princess Peach. But they also have other alcohols so they can likely meet most drink needs. Last time I went there was a guy wearing a shirt that read "Don't Die Without Knowing What's Out There." This was a message for me during this night, and now I share it because it might be a message you need to hear too, on the day or night, or new moon when you read this. read more

This a fun barcade in Little Tokyo! The game prices were more affordable than I expected, which was a pleasant surprise. The bar here also makes drinks that are delicious and quite strong. There is a little bit for everyone here. There's a louder game area with a DJ, a quiet outdoor space, and then a back room with mostly pinball machines. Rewriting this review because I was plastered when I made the last one lmao, unfortunately, still stand by my point that the security is awful unless you are either what I'm guessing is a regular or someone who is willing to flirt with the security, you will be treated badly by them. Although I understand some bars and clubs don't like customers walking in and out, this bar makes many exceptions for those they like and dont based off the stated criteria. The bar tenders were kind and even with the large amount of people inside still struck a quick conversation while making my drink and showed kindness. Other than security this is a really cool spot. But again if you expect to be treated nicely, you better hope the security is in a good mood or it's pay day. (My group spent a lot of money to be treated that poorly for simply walking out the bar) read more
