Grilled Corn Bread & Jelly
Zoe G.

Loved sitting at the counter for breakfast, the staff were so kind and friendly. We got the macnut waffle and grilled cornbread. I loved both...so much so that I went back a 2nd time just for the corn bread. We also grabbed a box from the bakery with a poi mochi donut hot and fresh. The coco puffs were nice, but nothing mind blowing. Pricing in the bakery and at the counter were quite reasonable!

It's a little different now. I mean, they add a small salad to the breakfast plates. I guess we need a little roughage...LOL! Two eggs scrambled with Spam and rice. Oh and a side of Portugeuse sausage, and a waffle....LOL! These are my go tos! The waffle was good but it didn't taste like before. Auntie couldn't believe I was going to eat this all! But I didn't have breakfast and I wasn't going to have lunch so, yes, all my favorites. A couple came and sat next to me. I wasn't sure if they were in a hurry or was just impatient. But come one people, aunties are working and just relax. Mahalo Liliha! Always love coming to visit!

There are five locations in Honolulu, but if you want the true old-school Liliha experience, this is the definitive place to go. Even though there were locations closer to us, Jamie W and I took the local bus, the 13, for well over a half-hour to get to Kalihi where it sits on Kuakini Street. Here it was pretty busy between the bakery and the long diner counter. We were surprised there were no tables and chairs, but we managed to sidle into two open spots in front of the grill. The menu was classic diner fare with the typical Hawaiian signature dishes. But first, we were served their house bread rolls, grilled, soaked in melted butter, and accompanied by a florescent strawberry syrup (Photo 10). They were devoured quickly. For our meal, we succumbed to local favorites. Jamie ordered the $18.95 Mahi Mahi & Eggs, a hearty portion with three grilled filets topped with scrambled eggs with mixed greens and rice (Photo 8). Flattened for easy grilling, the fish was tasty and more tender than we expected. I went even more classic and ordered the $17.95 Loco Moco with Garlic Fried Rice, a large hamburger patty grilled and topped with a runny fried egg. It was laid on top of the rice and drenched in country-style gravy (Photo 9). It worked for me. Our veteran server had an edge, but she eventually warmed up to us. Meanwhile regulars were rotating the counter like clockwork. Our visit wasn't over though. Various YouTube vloggers encouraged a perusal of the bakery, in particular, the $3.19 Coco Puffs, chocolate-filled cream puffs topped with Chantilly frosting. We bought two and added the $3.59 Green Tea version, the $3.19 regular cream puff with powdered sugar, and the $3.19 Chocolate Cream Puff (Photo 7). Hey, we were on vacation. We waked over to Liliʻuokalani Botanical Garden and devoured them easily. FOOD - 4.5 stars...the diner fare is satisfying but it's the coco puff that takes it over the top AMBIANCE - 4 stars...classic no-frills grub spot SERVICE - 3.5 stars...a bit surly behind the counter TOTAL - 4.5 stars...I'm cuckoo for coco puffs RELATED - Exploring Hawaii? The Liliha Bakery is consistently delicious. They have a wide variety of items to choose from and everything is appealing to the eyes. You can randomly make a selection and almost guarantee you will enjoy to item picked. We always go for the Mochi Donuts and add some other random selection. Stop by and enjoy!

OG bakery & eatery. TIP: Order food ahead of time. Takes FOREVER (30+ mins) even during off peak times (counter not full & no people waiting for a seat). Bakery counter service is brisk. Grilled butter roll with the florescent crack jelly is a nice snack. French donut with chocolate was good. Sesame cookies are crispy & yummy. Chocolate cream puff is my preference because chantilly isn't. Would pass on the Russian tea cookies. Not light & buttery. The blueberry cream cheese cost 2x at the register compared to the sign.

So many options!

Accidental drive by was a happy accident. Was getting Neko Koneko when we drove by this packed bakery, with old school diner vibes. We got a few things, including the coco puff, Dubai chocolate puff, malasada and hot dog bun. Would get everything again, minus the hot dog, because it was a tad too literal (a me problem not the bakery's problem), but the breading on everything was amazing and pastries weren't too sweet. Staff were helpful. Would definitely go back.

Get your gingerbread man from Liliha Bakery. Merry Christmas!

"It's the most wonderful time of the year" Getting goodies at Liliha Bakery is always great- but during the Christmas holidays, it's especially satisfying getting those special treats for Christmas. A classic gingerbread man is always on the list of stuff to get. They always run out so call ahead and reserve if you really want them. The oldest location in Kalihi is always my choice for their baked goods- you can always grab a bite to eat at the classic counter service too. Great service, friendly staff, ono food. Parking!

The hype is real. The baked good are delicious. From savory to sweet, there is something for everyone. My boys enjoyed a maple doughnut, emsemada, and pepperoni cheese roll. My spouse and I enjoyed the ham and cheese roll, tuna and cheese roll, and lilikoi malasada. The aunties behind the counter are patient and there is dedicated parking. There is a steady stream of locals who seem to stop in for breakfast considering the 20ish counter seats available for dine-in.

Grilled Butter Roll & Jelly

Wow one of our favorite comfort diners!! Honestly the rolls were the star of the show i could have eaten these rolls alone and it would have sufficed. We tried 2 different loco mocos and delicious as expected! We then ended with the famous cream puffs and i can see why they're famous! We waited about 20 minutes to be seated as it was Sunday brunch but id gladly wait again. The restaurant was filled with families and a friendly space! I'll definitely be back!!

4 matcha puffs that I certainly did not order
Candace C.

I love when they listen. I said 4 regular coco puffs. The worker replies back 2 regular? I said no 4 regular. She said ok 4 regular coco puffs and then when I get home open the box and see it's 4 matcha. I don't micromanage cause that's going to ruin my day :( it's 1 thing cause I have to drive far and another with the price cause it's a bit of a rip. It's not cheap. Leaving cause this happened 3x now. I would say maybe it's morning they didn't have their coffee or something but I bought this after 1 pm

I love going to Liliha when I visit Oahu! Just a great local diner with great food and goodies. The service is always amazing and they are so kind. We ordered a few items for breakfast before our flight: Oxtail Soup: delicious! Always hits the spot and is so refreshing. Garlic Rice and Portuguese sausage: a standard breakfast but the garlic rice was sooo good. I would definitely get it again. Beef Stew: a little too tomato-y for my taste. I probably wouldn't get this again. The grilled butter rolls were AMAZING! I am still thinking about this. We got some cream puffs last time and they are always so good too!

Little bit of everything
Sudesna M.

Liliha Bakery is one of those places that completely lives up to the hype. We tried the coco puff, chocolate cream puff, poi donuts, and shortbread cookies, and honestly--everything was fantastic. The coco puff is a must: soft pastry with that rich, not-too-sweet filling that makes you want another bite immediately. The chocolate cream puff is indulgent and smooth, perfect for chocolate lovers. The poi donuts were a fun local twist--slightly chewy, lightly sweet, and different from anything you get on the mainland. And the shortbread cookies? Simple, buttery, and dangerously easy to snack on. Yes, it's high-calorie food. But you're in Honolulu, on vacation, walking a ton, and soaking up island vibes--so who cares? This place is pure comfort, nostalgia, and joy on a plate. Absolutely worth a stop!

Peter C.

Liliha Bakery is a must stop every time I am on the island, and this location is my favorite. It has a big parking lot, and I love the diner vibe. Everything is always made fresh daily, and we usually go in the morning before hikes/beach days before things sell out. I always get the cream puffs and mochi donuts/bites, then we try new things. We walk the bakery and whatever sounds good we pick haha. This method never disappoints! The diner is always busy, and I'll have to try it next time!

Ask the Community - Liliha Bakery

What is the food choices n costs @ ur food menu?

Their menu is available on their website.

Does Liliha Bakery take orders for Butter rolls, for example...Thanksgiving? We want to avoid the "crowd".

Aloha! Yes, we do take pre-orders! You can either give us a call at one of our locations or visit us at lilihabakery.com to place an order for tomorrow or any day. Mahalo nui!

What bakery items are gluten free?and do all their bakeries have GF items?

Poi mochi donut Yes

For pastries, doughnuts, etc., how do their prices compare vs. Kamehameha Bakery?

Kamehameha is much more inexpensive than Liliha. I think Kam has a better glazed donut, and their haupia and poi are unmatched by anyone. The sizes of the pastries are also much bigger than Liliha. I love Liliha but I've been going there for… Read more

How is liliha bakery custard pies? Is it good?

I enjoyed the custard pie so much. The pastry dough is flavorful and smooth. The custard is rich and silky. The flavors compliment each other well.

Both good - I personally like the dobash Good luck

My kid is asking (not surprised lol) but does the loco moco have any veggies/onions (so the burger patty itself)? Thank you!

The gravy is typically made from mushrooms and onions.

YEs

Is the moco loco served during lunch and dinner as well? Or is it only a breakfast item?

Yes. All day

How well does frozen coco puffs travel by plane?

I believe it will do well, but it may not last the temptation of having a few during the flight.

What location has the shortest bakery line? Or better yet do any locations allow you to order bakery items while at your table for dine in?

I was able to order from the bakery while dining at their Kalihi location. I was happy they let me because darned if that line didn't go out the door that day.

Do you have any gluten-free items on your menu?

Are you talking about the bakery or the diners? Diners have an egg menu and ox-tail soup.

Breakfast served all day?

Yes

Why don't u call them to find out

Has anyone tried hand carry to mainland? How did it handle?

We brought boxes of the poi donut and didn't have any problem ' It's so good reheating by air frying !

What time do they stop serving waffles/breakfast?

They serve a full menu all the time I believe.

Little overdue of a review but here we go lol…read more. Diners has been a staple for my family & I , and I'm sure many other families on island for YEARS. Our family's go to was always Cheeseburger and yellow sauce with fries! As time and society evolved , so did Diners, since they became "Upscale" and added more things to their menu. I have tried their Grilled lobster plate more than once from their Upscale menu in the past and I think during that time it was $15? Not sure if it's still that price, but for that price it was a winner! Lobster + salad and rice ? What more can you ask for since that's basically a steal in today's economy. Anyway , I was in the area recently and decided on diners for dinner. I was really craving ahi katsu, unfortunately my go to spot was already closed since I decided on dinner a little after 8pm ish? So I thought .. well diners has ahi katsu supposedly .. why not give it a try. I wasn't expecting much since it was Diner's BUT needless to say.. their ahi katsu is DELICIOUS. Seasoned well and cooked to perfection! I love the sauce they drizzle on the katsu. I should've asked for extra sauce on the side had I known it was gonna be yummy! But that's something to keep note of on my next visit in the future. I definitely would order this plate again! And continue to adventure out on their menu lol. A tip to keep in mind : they do have signs posted by their windows to be patient when ordering because they do take a bit to make and give you your order since they are always short staffed. And there's normally alot of people waiting or ordering since lots come to this establishment right after work or in between work or just simply there for a bite to grab. So prepare to wait .. but sometimes you can be lucky where it doesn't take as long. It does truly depend on time and the day I guess. Also one last thing, my personal opinion , I think Diners is worth grabbing food from. Whether you're hungry , in the area or wanting to grind. Some people have mixed reviews or bad experiences but me personally , I always had a good outcome. Oh also before I forget their steak is delicious too (LOL) , never ordered it for myself but I shared some of it with one of my relatives who ordered their steak before. Give this place a shot!

I'm happy to see a local business thriving but I hope they can improve their customer flow. The baked goods looked as inviting as always but they seemed a day-old or something. The butter horn was hard and not flaky as I've come to expect and the chocolate of the Boston Creme donut wasn't creamy. They may wish to consider: 1, Clearly delineating the line for the restaurant from the bakery. It was super busy for both so there was a lot of confusion. 2. Perhaps placing the number machine for the bakery closer to the door? Tourists aren't familiar with the system so it leads to some unnecessary dissatisfaction. 3. The staff had to leave the counter to get coffee - hot or iced. The condiments for the coffee were on the showcase so people had to be in everyone's way to get their sugar and cream. In fact, if you were standing near the door you had to go through people waiting in line back into the establishment to get those items. But, with all this, the two ladies at the counter were remarkably composed and helpful.

It's a small, but very kitschy little dining room that fits at most 20 tables so definitely go early or pack your patience as you wait for an opening. However, the service is fast, but friendly and they are able to turn the tables with extreme proficiency and also making you feel welcomed. The items to get at Aloha Kitchen are its souffle pancakes and loco moco. The souffle pancakes is essentially the size of the plate that it came on, but because of the airness and lightness of it's execution, you leave feeling full but not weighted down by normal carbs. The recommendation is the coconut macadamia nut pancake with its unique combination of flavor and textures. The other local item is their loco moco. Get it in its tradition form with the hamburger patty with an egg over easy, but add the spam fried rice over the white rice. The combination of flavors along with its terrific gravy makes this a can't miss item on your stay in Hawaii. The one thing to be aware of is, the will announce the name quickly and only a few times and if you're not present after the first few announcements, you'll be marked as a "no show" and will have to go back to the end of the line, so definitely wait out front if you're there any later than opening. Otherwise, in a sea of numerous breakfast spots in Waikiki, Aloha Kitchen really does stand out. I only wish they had a bigger space, but wonder if that would take away from the charm of this space.
