Went there two week ago, our pizza was burned to a crisp. Previous trips there were OK, but this was bad. I can't believe she would bring that out to a table and serve it. Ewwwww. I won't be back. Perhaps the waitress and/or cook was new, this was a solitary experience. The bar is nice, cozy and friendly BTW. We were going to a movie nearby, no time to get anything else; and yes, they charged us full price. I didn't want 'to get worked up', it was a date night and I was out for some fun so I let it slide. My boyfriend got mysteriously cut off tonight after 3 drinks, which I had a few sips of (beer off tap, and yes I'm over 21 and the bartender saw my ID). Bartender wouldn't say why. Turns out it's because he helped me up the stairs. Well, no one asked, but he helped me up the stairs because I have a chronic illness. My boyfriend eventually let the bartender know about my condition when we found out this was why (by the way, she told other people in our party this was why she cut him off, but she wouldn't tell HIM) but we were so pissed at how this was handled that he closed his tab and left. Like, I get she doesn't want to serve someone who may be so drunk they can't walk, but you could tell *ME* or my boyfriend that instead of gossiping to others in our party, and I would of understood your livelihood may be at stake and ordered a ginger ale instead of sipping off of his drinks. My legs have been in pain for the last week, this has been my first night out in about a month. I sat down in the shower today to shave my legs for this. I sat down in front of the mirror to do my make up for tonight. I'm embarrassed and upset due to this. If I was 60 no one would of thought twice about my difficulty walking, but due to my young age I was judged. I will never come here again next time I visit Hingham. read more

It pains me to write a bad review in my new town but it has to be done. This is an old place that would make a great pub, if they got the food right. I'm giving this 2 stars as my husband enjoyed the beer and my seak tips were OK. More on that below. I had the steak tip dinner with steak tips, a baked potato and a sad sad sad excuse for salad. (a piece of lettuce and 2 slices of tomato). My steak tips were SORELY undercooked when I asked for medium (I love medium rare and these were WAY too rare for even me) so I ate half of them. The potato was half cooked and very uninspiring. My husband had the fish and chips which looked like it had come out of the freezer. He said the best thing about all of it was the coleslaw, which is the same standard issue restaurant cole slaw that he could get anywhere. This place is in prime location across from Stars and Tosca and Tosca cafe. It needs to REALLY step up it's game to stick around as I even heard some locals commenting on it. It's got charm and if they really offered a decent menu i'm sure it would be better as it is reasonable. We were told to get the pizza, and to be fair they did look good, but i'm off dairy so that wasn't possible. I say go somewhere else. read more

I guess we are in the minority...but we found the Liberty Grill to be horrible! First off, our waitress was the rudest I have ever encountered, bordering on downright nasty. Her whole demeanor was just very rude. The second we were seated she asked if we wanted drinks (no sort of beverage menu offered). When my husband asked what was available. She answered very snippy..."We've got lots"...um thanks. After we ordered, she practically dumped our food on the table. Very abrupt, acted like we were an annoyance to her. And the food...yuck. The pizza, I can't understand the raves! It tasted like cardboard with oversalted sauce and greasy toppings. I have nothing against thin crust "bar" style pizza. But this was just horrible tasting. My husband ordered a burger and she did ask him how he wanted it prepared (rare). It arrived literally burnt and beyond "well-done". Why ask a patron how they would like something and then bring something entirely opposite? Even aside from that, he said it was the worst tasting burger...ever. Making Mcdonalds look good! I will say the special I got, the lobster roll, was well prepared. but I was expecting a bit more than a tiny little grilled hot-dog roll size for 19 dollars...are you kidding me??? This establishment seemed to have a quaint feel from the outside but inside it's small and a bit cramped. It's Wednesday evening and with few quests, the ordering of food was fast but very slow to serve. The menu is very limited with typically bar food with no surprises in taste or quality. I decided on the Reuben with French fries. The first thing I noticed was that the French fries were bland fair, barely warm and got cold quickly. The Reuben was the same. The sauerkraut was lifeless cabbage that lacked texture, taste, and quality; the rest of the ingredients looked liked leftovers. I won't be returning. read more

I have gone by this place many times wanting to try it out and finally had a chance tonight. The food isn't bad but what did leave a bad taste in my mouth was the service. As other reviewers pointed out the waitress didn't seem like she didn't want to be there and that she didn't want us there either. She was a bit on the snippy side but that is only when she came to our table which was to take our order, drop off our order and give us our check. Not once did she check to see if we needed anything else such as a refilled glass of water? That kind of thing is waitressing 101 to me that when you see an empty glass, you fill it. Needless to say unfortunately I will not be going back since there are other restaurants in the area that wants repeat business. I have lived in Hingham for awhile, but always ventured past this spot, right off off 3A on the Harbor. I was recommended to try it, and was surprised by the great prices, great crowd and good home style food. The past few times I have been I have gotten the surf and turf, which is amazing, and could rival that of some close by expensive neighbors. People swear by the pizza, and lots of parties of 8 or more come in on any given night for it. The place itself is a little off. From the outside it is charming, the inside however def has a townie feel, and needs an updating. The bar downstairs is cramped, you almost get the feeling you are on a boat. The staff is OK, sometimes I feel the waitresses are given odd table assignments, but all in all its a good homey place. read more

Wow, the one-review orange heads have skewered this place. Methinks the filter is not working in this instance? Someone seems to have it in for the staff at this place... Anyway, this was not our original destination but Café Tosca across the way was too crowded so we stopped in. There was a table in the upstairs bar area that we could sit at without a wait, so we did. The bartender waited on us and she was really terrific - friendly and quick. This place looks exactly like what I expected it to look like - and that's not a bad thing. It's very casual. Lots of kids and blue-hairs, but we were there on the early side. To be honest, we didn't even really look at the menu past the bar pizza. My husband started with a bowl of chowder which he enjoyed. I tasted it and it had a nice smoky flavor and was very creamy. I started with a Greek salad. It was a typical Greek salad, but the ingredients were all fresh and crisp. The pizzas were very good. They're those thin crust, Frisbee sized pizzas. I had mine with black olives, jalapenos, mushrooms and diced tomatoes and thought it was delicious. I took half home and reheated it for lunch the next day. The crust was crispy, which is exactly how I like it, though I can see how maybe not everyone does. My husband had the scallop and bacon pizza, which I tried. It was not something I would have thought I'd like but it was actually really good. There was a bit of a wait for the pizza but it was a busy night and our apps and drinks came out quickly so we were fine waiting. I read a review that stated that the reviewer came to Liberty Grill because Tosca and Star's were unavailable. The ambiance and food could not be more different as it is between these three restaurants. Without doing a review of all three here is the scoop: Liberty is a local hangout with many regulars. These people are always friendly and courteous to the new folks that enter into the establishment. The food is a great value, the fried whole belly clams are off the charts and the pizza is second to none (yes even Lynwood's). Do not go here for charm and warm service. This is the place to get great food inexpensively and to enjoy some libations. It is not to garner all of the ambience that the Hingham seaside has to offer nor to get a smile from the waitresses ( you need to go to Tosca for these). This place is a gem and you should try it out. We did about 8 years ago! read more

The pizza here is great. Second only to Christo's in Brockton. Coming from me this is high praise indeed. The rest of the menu is fine, nothing extraordinary, but nothing to make you ill, either. This is a hidden gem for bar pizza lovers. A small, intimate, neighborhood tavern with great bar pizza and a nice selection of beer. The night we visited it was just pizza and beer being served but that was what we wanted and it was excellent. Prices better than reasonable. Service was excellent. One of the best and last unspoiled treasures of Hingham. A great spot that is dependably good. The bar is tiny but quaint, the dining rooms are much larger and comfortable for groups and families (in contrast with Stars across the street). I went with here for a quick dinner with by boyfriend the other night and I must say, I was very disappointed. The menu was boring and I almost got pizza (which looking back at it now, might have been the best idea) but I ended up getting the grilled chicken sandwich. My boyfriend got a burger. I started with a salad which was less than enchanting and my boyfriend started with a cup of lukewarm chowder. The spoon he was given had a jagged edge and cut his lip when he took his first bite. The chicken sandwich had almost no taste so ketchup was my only option. The burger was small and overcooked and he got a side of lukewarm, actually cold, chili to go on top of his burger. Both of our sandwiches were messy, soggy, and almost impossible to eat. The thing that bothered me most about our whole experience was the fact that a soda on draft cost you $3.50!!!! I understand that it's free refills but that still seems ridiculously priced. I only drank one small glass! We could have saved $7 if we got water! Overall I do not recommend this place at all. It's outdated and seems like the classic towny bar. If you HAVE to eat here stick with pizza because it certainly looked more appetizing than anything I ate. read more

My husband and I happened upon this place last weekend, after walking away from a 20 minute wait at The Snug and a overwhelming crowd at trendy, Stars. I wanted to try and boost the unfair reviews of this place. Yes, the decor is tired and there are a lot of local's at the tiny bar, what's wrong with that? The food was delicious and I had the best Bloody Mary I've ever tasted! The bar tender came out from behind his post to greet us and was a really upbeat, happy guy. The mussels were perfectly cooked, the garlic bun was reminiscent of Fontaine's( those of you from old Boston would relish). Sometimes "old school"is better and trendy- is just that. Brought my older parents there today. They like it because it is quiet. The food was mediocre. I've been going to that restaurant since I was a kid back when it was Ye Olde Mill Grille. My dad and I got baked scallops they were slightly over cooked but fine. My mother got shrimp scampi it was dry and tasteless. The service was pretty bad. Our waitress was in her phone a lot of the time. And an older couple waited so long for their check (maybe 15-20 minutes) they made up the amount and left. So cute restaurant, mediocre but fine food, and not great service. read more

This was our first time here. I took my wife and 4 kids to Liberty Grille for a Sunday Lunch. We were one of the first at the restaurant and were seated quickly. There were some patrons already enjoying the bar when we arrived, but otherwise the seating area was empty on the first and second floor. We ordered basic pub food, a grilled chicken sandwich, cheeseburger, grilled cheese for the kids, and a chicken ceasar salad. For an appetizer we ordered the buffalo tenders, which were the best dish out of the lot. Overall, the food was mediocre at best. For the kids, the grilled cheese was actually pretty good. The ceasar salad had some chunky pieces of chicken. My kids didn't care for the cheeseburger either, which reminded me of something you would get at the concession stand during a game. This is a good atmosphere if you're looking for a townie spot to have a drink. The view isn't too bad either, but Liberty Grille left alot to be desired. read more

We love the pizza here -- and so decided to go last night - - the service was the ABSOLUTE WORST WE'VE EVER HAD. The server was beyond rude, careless, and looked dirty. She was angry, threw our food at us, plated our dessert such that it looked like someone else's leftovers - - was absolutely horrific. If you can't be nice, don't be a server. I've seen all of the other comments below saying pretty much the same thing and am BAFFLED that the owner could care less. Do you really not care about your patrons? Really? If I could give Zero stars I would. I ordered two Chesse Pizza's Well Done with Burnt edges, I get to my car and open my pizzas to find they aren't well done and no burnt Edges at All! So I go inside and talk to a gentleman telling him I ordered them well done with burnt edges, and that is not what I got. He takes the pizzas and brings them back into the kitchen, an older lady with black mascara comes out, who I ordered from on the phone and was not the most polite person, says oh we don't even do burnt edges anymore. WHAT! A friend of mine came here two days ago and sent me a picture that he had with burnt edges, so unless they changed their menu within two days I guess she was just lying. So The guy tells me they can make them correctly, takes my pizzas tells me he's putting them in the oven, you cannot make a pizza have burnt edges after it's already been cooked, it took him a few minutes to figure that out. He comes back out and tells me they can't even make them well done it would only have to be crispy, does not offer to make me new pizzas. I tell him that's fine I will just take a refund, then he tells me he will write me a hand written coupon, so the next time I come in I get the pizzas for free. I say OK, but then right as I'm about to leave I realized he wasn't going to give me the refund, so then I tell him I would really just like the refund my money back please, he says then you can't get the coupon, I said I never wanted the coupon I just wanted my pizzas made correctly. So I finally get my refund and then they throw the pizzas in the trash in front of me, plus nobody was wearing masks in the kitchen or the staff. I was excited to try this place but it was a disaster, they lost my business and it's too bad because the pizzas did look good, they just weren't made correctly. My wife was born & brought up in Hingham, and living in the next town over (Weymouth) we have been frequenting this restaurant on and off, in all its variations, for well over 30 years now. Sadly, I have to say that we will no longer be dining in at 'The Grill' as we have always called it. We still love the bar pizzas, and in fact, have never had a bad meal off this traditional New England style pub-like menu. The reason for our restaurant break-up has to do with the consistently poor service that we have received here over the past year or so. Waitresses that make you feel as though you're inconveniencing them by asking for say another drink; never coming back to check on us after we've received our meals until we have to search and flag them down to get some extra tarter sauce, or beg them for a second drink. We've even watched the inattentive younger waitresses on their phones, texting away with their backs to the dining room, and when they are finally finished with their texts, they walk away towards the bar and the kitchen, never turning around to glance at their tables and paying customers to see if there might be anything else that we need. For whatever reason, the paying customers seem to be the last thing on their minds. As a point of reference, my wife and I routinely dine out twice a week, and in our early years have both worked in the restaurant industry for 20+ years each; she as a waitress, and me as a busboy, then waiter, then bartender. We know how restaurants work, and we know what it's like for a server to be in the weeds. We're very understanding when waitstaff get's backed up, or kitchens get jammed all at once. We get it. Stuff can happen, and we can be very flexible, As long as our server works to keeps us informed, and just lets us know that he/she hasn't forgotten us. But we don't seem to get any of that kind of consideration from the older waitress (the one often dressed entirely in black?) that we've frequently had, or the young kids either. Is it poor training, or something else? I'm sorry to say that we just can't do it anymore. We'll miss you, Liberty Grill, and we'll miss the ever-congenial bartender Guy; one of the nicest bartenders on the south shore, but I'm sure that we can still find happiness in Quincy, Braintree, Scituate and Weymouth at one of the many other restaurants that we frequent that treat us like they actually want our business. read more

The food was good, we got pizza and a few appetizers. The service was awful. Just about the worst I have ever experienced. The waitress seemed like she wanted to do ANYTHING except wait on us. I really like to give the benefit of the doubt, we all have bad days of course, but I could see no reason why she should treat her customers so badly (not busy in the restaurant, we were extra nice to her, helped by keeping table clean and plates stacked). Nothing except that we got a parking spot right outside the door. A waitress who never asked if the food was good, or if I wanted another beer as the bud keg beer was off putting and stale. To the tips that I asked for them to be mid rare and came to me blue and instant mashed potatoes??? avoid people avoid. Some of the best bar pizza around. If you dont want to make the drive to Randolph for Lindwoods, this is your place. Most pizza's are $5.50 to $6.50 and just as good. I can't speak for anything else on the menu, but everything is pretty much under $15, so i'd say its worth a try. This is a great after work kinda place. read more

It pains me to even give the Liberty Grill one star! For years, my family has loved coming to this restaurant, but tonight we received the WORST service. Where to begin... We had an older waitress, PEG, who was extremely rude and shouldn't even be allowed to work with the public. She didn't greet us yet right away asked our drink orders. When we explained we have a peanut allergy at the table and inquired if any items were cooked in peanut oil she snapped saying, "I don't know but why would anyone ever put peanut oil on pizza?" As if we were extremely dumb for ever asking such a thing. We had a very simple order, 3 pizzas, chicken fingers, and fried clams which should take at most 20 minutes due to the fact the restaurant wasn't very busy. However, we waited over 45 minutes and never once saw our waitress to even ask what the status of our order was. We had three young children with us who were starving and again, we never even received rolls to make up for the long wait time. Once the food arrived, the pizzas were cold and the other food was lukewarm. With such a wait, you would have thought the food would be extremely fresh and hot but it was at best- pitiful. Once our food arrived, I asked for a refill on my drink and after waiting 15 minutes for a diet coke, had to ask our rude waitress again and she had an attitude as if I was an annoyance! We will never return to this establishment again, absolutely horrendous service. read more

5 of us dropped in for lunch the other day because my mom recently read a great article about the owner in a local South Shore newspaper. We absolutely LOVED the food and the service was typical of a busy lunch time, apologies for making us wait but for a group that enjoys each others' company and the lovely harbor view, we thought the service was good. We tried a luncheon special, 3 different seafood options and a pizza (my new personal fav even tho' I grew up with Lynwood and Cape Cod Cafe, Liberty Grille NAILS the bar pizza). The owner was on site and very involved with making sure everyone enjoyed their experience. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place and intend to come back again myself. read more

Just tried this place after years of going by it. It was mid-afternoon on a Saturday, I was by myself so I sat at the bar. I ordered a Bud bottle but they only have draft. It was damn cold and very tasty! (Especially after a day of Kayaking at World's End) I looked at the menu and saw something I never saw on a menu before - Scallop Baked Scrod. Those are two of my favorite dishes so I couldn't resist. I ordered it with mashed potatoes and coleslaw. The Red Sox game was on TV. They were playing the Yankees, it was the seventh inning and the Sox were winning, yeah! While I was waiting for my food, I realized how lucky I was to get a seat at the bar. It is a very small area and more and more people kept coming in. The restaurant side was very quiet; the bar was the place to be. The bartender, Guy, knew everyone by name and they were all constantly joking with each other. It was a good atmosphere. My meal was fabulous! The seafood was cooked perfectly! The mashed potatoes were very hot & delicious and the coleslaw was also very good. So many people were coming in and either ordering or picking up pizza that I ordered one to go while I watched the rest of the baseball game. I heated some of it up later that night and it was really good bar pizza, just like Poopsie's and the Linwood. This place was a pleasant surprise. Very casual but comfortable. Yes, it is located in an old building with a quirky layout, but what's wrong with that? The reason I never stopped here before was because I thought it might be too upscale. All good until the soda was handed to me in a glass as I waited. Explained that it was intended for my meal. Server said they had no provisions for take out drinks. Didn't offer refund. No time to press issue. Despite having a robust take out business they did not include plastic ware or napkins. This is a classic faux-dining restaurant. I ordered a surf and turf; the steak was cut into uneven bits so it was also cooked unevenly. To hide this, they add a very tacky teriyaki sauce so you cant taste the beef. The fried shrimp were actually pretty okay. The vegetables were horrendous however. The squash was microwaved and had a horrible taste. Service was not up to par either. In my opinion, only go if you're starving and the other local businesses are packed. read more

I was thinking 2 stars, but after re-reading my review went up one. wow, I wish yelp had half stars. So....... In for dinner for 4 monday evening @ 6:30. Walking up the to restaurant there are four big gruff looking men smoking cigarettes. Now, I have found that guys that look like this are usually some of the nicest guys around and the first to help out someone in need, but blocking the restaurant door? when we entered to the left was a small bar with a few more guys drinking. to the right a small dining area. we were seated promptly upstairs in the dining room. our waitress was quick polite and professional. (all good things). I ordered "yesterdays chili" (that what is says on the menu) with onions and cheese. it was good. albeit microwaved, but hey it's yesterdays chili. also tried the clam chowder, which was also good. Entrees consisted of: steak tips. which came out cooked as ordered with a baked potato and some assorted veggies. the meat was very very chewy. almost dangerous, but tasted ok. (I would not get this again). Chicken parm, pasta was cooked correctly but not drained well, so my dish while looking great turned into a soupy mess. next was 2 pizzas both were fine. there are better choices for pizza but these "bar pizzas" were fine. everything was very reasonably priced. @ 10 for the chicken parm, the pizzas were 7. I forget the price of the steak tips. I will go back but only for pizza. I had such high hopes for this old school restaurant. read more
