Spontaneous lunch at Leone's was the most delicious Italian food I've had in years. We had stuffed mushrooms, pear salad and spinach ravioli with shrimp, sun-dried tomatoes and pink sauce. Michael was a very gracious host after our waitress apologetically brought out each person's plates not on time (really only a few minutes apart). I didn't think it was a huge deal, but the way Michael made up for this (with some very delicious cannolis) added to the already great tasting experience. So, five stars for food, customer service and a good space inside and out on this sunny day. We'll definitely be back for the brick oven pizza I spotted on other folks' tables. read more

We live around the corner and get the food from there at least once a week. Mostly it's a slice of plain pizza (for $2.00 a slice it is super good), but if we need informal restaurant we don't feel ashamed to bring an active toddler- that's the place we usually end up. We had multiple family out of town dinners there because the place is not cramped. They have a lot of space inside and huge seating area outside in warm weather. I knocked down a star only because their service- waiters know me already but I feel that they are not really on top of their game. The food is not super sophisticated but pretty good. I often get portabello mushroom panini from lunch menu and husband gets ginger calamari and eggplant rollatini. Prices are good for Montclair. read more

Went here for a party of 16. We were accommodated appropriately and the service was pretty good for a party that size. The appetizers were very good. I had the chicken murphy for dinner and it was very good. The waitress wasnt happy when we split the checks or when people had to pay with different credit cards. She would have been given a great tip either way. The attitudes are not needed. read more

Had eaten here a couple of years ago, no more than 2. Simple Italian set up inside with some recent upgrades, nice, sort of homey. Ok - ordered Chicken Parma plated & linguine w/sauce on the side. Sauce, terrific & parm - well 2 huge pieces, just the right thickness, breading & sauce - delicious. Had to take some home there was so much. 1st - 2015 review Ok, fast forward to last Saturday Night, about 4:45.There are wider sidewalks in Montclair now & lots of outdoor table seating (most chairs were in "questionably safe" condition - I swap mine, I'm not teeny tiny) & surprise, some light Jazzy entertainment, ok. My friend & I decide to order only 1 appetizer - Eggplant Rolitini - nice size, sauce good, yummy, and 2 entrees to share. Since we remembered how much there was last time & we each took some of ours home. We order Carbonara & Veal Parm w/side of linguine. Carbonara plate seems much smaller then before & Veal Parm comes, only 1 medium sized cutlet, & very thin - like a bra insert. Ok, for an B cup. Yikes. I get it, Veal costs more than Chicken, but Carbonara, mostly pasta & not homemade, cheap to make. We each have half of the entrees. Poor Lamb that gave it's life for this meal - not juicy & tender, and Carbonara was tasty more chop meat but not much panchetta. Ordered Garlic bread too - overly browned more like "giant croutons" than bread slices. That's why this Italian Girl prefers her own food. Rather eat other cuisine I dont prepare better at home. The entertainment was really super, no credit for that to the restaurant. But to make our stay at the table worth it we finish eating relax about 10 mins & order some dessert, which we rarely do after a meal that is filling, this really wasn't & we want to stay to enjoy the Jazz - WHAT! - NO CAPPUCINO - broken machine, busy weekend evening crowd & 2 great Italian Desserts with AMERICAN Coffee - oh the humanity!!! I want to try the Eggplant Parm - comes to me like a narrow slice of lasagna floating in so much sauce it looked like they murdered it. Changed my order to the Chicken Parm & got only 1 cutlet, like a lop sided show girl who lost her padding. A tiny side of linguine and cold "used" Italian bread pieces that had sauce on them before my entree even came. Ew - gross. BTW cost the same as the dinner menu, not lunch pricing. Had to stare down the hostess to get her attention to replace the marinara stained bread. Not busy, not "packed" actually more women employees outside than Saturday night & way WORSE service. A lot of chatter between both the male & female employees & not much attention to customers. My tip: The owner or Management needs to step up THEIR game. There are literally dozens of Italian Restaurants all around you. Held a re-pass lunch for my father there today. We had 40 people and the wait Staff was impeccable. They made sure that all of the guests had plenty of food that was being served. The eggplant rolentini was fantastic along with the calamari appetizer. For the main course we had chicken PARM and chicken Murphy both were delicious. The owner Michael made sure that everything was taken care of and checked in on the party throughout the lunch. We are never dissatisfied with the service or food and would highly recommend for any meal or event. :) read more

The pizzeria was very nice. A group of friends and I went there for lunch the other day and didn't think that it would be as nice as it was. When you walk in there are two large, well decorated - Victorian style - dining rooms. Very beautiful. Unfortunately, the service didn't match the decor. We were the only customers there for majority of the time we were there. After that two other couples came in. The waitress was no where to be found anytime we wanted to order. We had to wait at least 10 minutes before she would come around. She never smiled, actually she was very snappy and rude from the moment she came to take our drinks order. She served my friends and I in old plastic cups and we noticed that she served the other guests in nice glasses. Her overall service was below awful. The prices of the food were pretty expensive and the descriptions in the menu were incorrect. "Grilled Portabello Mushroom" isn't the same as HALF of a mushroom on salad. We didn't understand how how bill came up to almost $80 when we ordered 2 pizzas and two pitchers of sprite. I understand that there was 7 of us, but we didn't order that much. The food was okay, but I've had better. I definitely wouldn't pay that much for mediocre food and sub par service. I would never recommend this pizzeria to anyone. read more

I visited Leone's this weekend!!! It's an amazing place, great location, great people, great service and hospitality. You feel like you are part of the family. We ordered the Ginger Calamari and the Balsamic Calamari with a house salad! The Calamari plates were the most outrageous taste you can have in your mouth... Amazing flavor that you can suck all your finger and eat the plate if you could. Then followed by the Shrimp Scampi- Jumbo Shrimp on top of baked buttery potatoes and side of Asparagus! Everything was perfectly cooked and presented well. The owner Mike and his staff were very pleasant. The best part is that is BYOB. You can bring your own liquor... Bad Pizza from Leone Restaurant After a day of traveling, I ended up in Montclair at Leone. A clerk recommended Leones as having the good pizza and Italian food , as opposed to other Italian restaurants in the area. After eating at Leones in Montclair. I have to say they need a lesson in providing good good food and service that one comes to expect when you go out to eat. I will just be brief and comment on the pizza because the food we had could only be described as tasteless. So pizza something so simple... The pizza arrived at our table it was topped with half green peppers and half ground beef with a thick crust. I am almost certain that Leone used pre-made pizza crusts. The crust was a horrible, dense, foamy bread. I say foamy because if the crust was poked with a fork, the holes would close up and appear that it was never stabbed. Although the crust had seemingly magical powers to heal itself, one thing it couldn't do was connect with cheese. Every bit of cheese, sauce, and topping slid right off the crust. Sometimes this happens if there is too much sauce on a pizza, but there was actually very little sauce on this pie. It's hard to tell exactly how much sauce the pizza started out with though because a lot of it got absorbed into the crust, making it kind of soggy. Perhaps this soggy crust couldn't provide a proper surface for the cheese to adhere itself to. Whatever caused the flaws with this pizza, it was totally unacceptable from what was recommended as the "good Italian restaurant." I've had better pizzas than this pie from the kfrozen food section at the Supermarket. 1 out of 8 slices... read more

If you like wild mice running around your table while you're eating, then this is the perfect place for you! Last night, we were sitting in a back corner table when a mouse decided to join us and was scurrying around on the floor next to us. When we brought this to one of the waitresses attention, she informed us that the mice "always come in from the outside of the back room" ....meaning mice visit the storage room and kitchen daily. They kept it very hush hush and continued to let the mouse scurry around the dining area. Luckily, we didn't get our meals yet so we proceeded to leave. This place had violations for live and dead mice found in the kitchen area last year and mouse droppings found in food prep areas. Clearly they have not fixed this problem. None of the staff was shocked by the mouse, so they must see them on a regular basis. read more

From the vintage photos on the walls depicting happy peasants eating pasta, to the dated and poorly executed menu, this is "restaurant" is nothing more than a spoof. Disney Italian American. I requested pasta "al dente" and got pre-cooked mush. No effort was made at actual cooking, just assembling pre-made ingredients. The main dishes came adorned with the same sides of over-cooked vegetables. An attempt at "fancy" was the addition of truffle oil to the appetizer salad, rendering it noxious and inedible. We couldn't believe that even the bread was stale and tried a piece from another basket, also fresh several days prior! One can find superior execution of simple dishes in almost any local pizzeria. To call this Italian food--- where food is fresh, regional and home made---or, even Italian American food, is, to employ an in character trope, ....it's a disrespectful! Try Forte Pizzeria in Caldwell for a better iteration of the genre. Food there is actually tasty and they will make your pasta "al dente" if you ask. read more

A friend and I ate here today, and we were horrified! We sat outside on this gorgeous Thursday afternoon. The service was prompt. We shared the Ginger Calamari as an appetizer, which was quite tasty. We both ordered the "special" ... Drunken Cod, which was described as cod fish in a brandy and cream sauce over fresh vegetables. The first bite of the cod tasted a bit off so I picked up a piece of the fish and smelled it. It had an awful ammonia smell. My friend didn't initially taste anything wrong with her fish, but when she picked up big piece on her fork and smelled it, it had the same awful urine-like ammonia smell. We called the server over and she smelled it, but said she didn't detect anything, but that she would take it back and tell the chef about the complaint. The manager came over and apologized. He said he smelled the fish and he also found it to have an ammonia smell. He explained that the fish wasn't bad or spoiled, and that it had just been delivered today, and further explained that he would call his fish supplier and let him know, further sharing that fish suppliers sometimes used ammonia as a means of keeping the fish fresh!!!!! I did a quick google search on my phone and came up with this from Chowhound: "The ammonia-like smell is because the fish is not fresh. It is a product of decomposition. Don't eat it if it smells like that. It might not make you sick, but then again it might." ...So, I have to assume the manager was less than truthful when he said that "the distributor might have used ammonia to keep the fish fresh." The worst part... we walked by the restaurant about an hour after we left to get back to our car and saw people eating the cod special, so they didn't stop serving fish that was very likely spoiled and could have made people sick!!! The take away from this experience... Don't order seafood doused in alcohol and cream, because the chef might be preparing it that way to disguise the smell of fish gone bad! Thank God for my sharp senses of taste and smell. I definitely will not eat at this place again. read more

Had the worst experience. The service was terrible. Went for dinner to avoid the rush at 6:00pm on a Saturday night. Left at 8:30 and was completely unsatisfied. Took at least 20 minutes to bring drinks and another 10 minutes after that to bring bread. The server brought my wife the wrong dinner and then comes back with another incorrect one trying to pass it off as what she ordered. She then comes back and says she typed it in wrong and it would be right out. After everyone else finishes the meal, here comes my wife's dish and it tastes frozen. *polenta (this dish is fabulous! there are portebello and shitake mushrooms on top; it is so savory and slightly salty but I love the flavors) *penne zucca (penne with brown butter, butternut squash, sage and ricotta; this dish was so sweet and too oily for me; it was so strange to have an entrée this sweet; I did not really enjoy it at all, I thought I was going to have a heart attack at the end of this meal; the ricotta was alright; the butternut squash was nicely cooked but holy cow, why so sweet?!) *funghi misti pizza (this was mushrooms, truffle oil, and taleggio cheese, OMG!!! I loved this pizza! the mushrooms were so good, the cheese was super soft and oozing all over, the crust was very good, I really liked the texture, taste and crunch of the crust; this pizza totally beats that Anthony's coal-fired pizza) *spinach pizza (spinach, mozzarella, and ricotta cheese; pretty good! there was surprisingly more spinach that I thought in this, the leaves were hiding under the cheese, I wish there was more ricotta but it was good regardless) we split this large pie in half and it was possible since both pies were sauceless aka the way I like my pizza The service here can be shotty, so watch out. but the food is overall good. read more

I am not sure what Gordon Ramsey did when he went to Leone's but I sure worked! My husband and I had not tried their food in years but decided to order take out last night. The food was absolutely delicious - especially the eggplant rollatini appetizer ( prob one of the best we've had). We also had the chicken parm and riviera club sandwiched which were also great. Best part was the owner actually made the delivery to our place because they had gotten busy and didn't want anyone to wait too long. Will definitely be enjoying Leone's again soon!! read more

First off the food was great. That's where it ends though. After paying the check I went to the restroom while my wife took our two kids outside. My wife did this because they were super busy with people waiting and didn't want to hold up a table. Once outside she realized she had left her gloves on the table. In the maybe 5 minutes this took another party was at the table and the gloves were gone. My wife spoke with the owner who went through the restaurant and couldn't find them. He asked his staff if anyone took them and nothing. He looked around the restaurant and couldn't find them. Clearly someone took them. He promised to call my wife after talking to his staff when they closed. He also said he would write her a check for the amount of the gloves if they weren't able to locate them. These gloves were given to my wife from me as a gift. Of course we never hear back from the owner. We never got a check to cover the cost either. My wife did call and left a message and no one returned her call. So yes the food is great but either the staff or patrons take things that don't belong to them and while the owner might tell you he'll get back to you and cover the cost unfortunately he didn't keep his word. read more

Been here twice. The first time service sucked. The second time service sucked even worse. I came here with my friend, apparently she likes crappy food. We went and there was no one in the dining room where we were told to sit by the hostess. After waiting 10 mins in an EMPTY dining room I went to ask for our waitress who then came by. No sort of personality, nothing. It took forever to get our food. It took forever to order our drinks and there were mosquitoes the size of palmetto bugs everywhere. I had a salad and we shared a pie. I think my salad was not washed because it felt like there was dirt on the leaves and it had one cherry tomato cut in half. I didn't eat any of it but the two pieces of parmesan cheese they put in it. The pizza was okay. Nothing special. It was soggy in the middle and burnt on the crust. To get the check, my friend went to ask for the waitress. I'm surprised this restaurant is as highly rated as it is, because in all reality it's not good and all you're paying is a premium for the location. I gave it two stars only because the portions are decent. Very disappointed. read more

I recently ate here with my fiance and was very disappointed. The outside looked like a promising authentic local Italian restaurant. We ordered the chicken milanese?(Overcooked chicken with potatoes,onions, canned mushrooms and pepper in a sauce. The minute I saw that the mushrooms and peppers were canned I knew the quality couldn't be great. I had the margherita pizza. Definitely the worst I have had to date. The sauce was extremely acidic and seemed like it was just poured out of a can. The best part was the server. He was extremely nice and courteous. read more

If you are looking for nice ambiance and good Italian food, this is not the place. It's loud, the sound bounces off the walls, families with rambunctious kids are 10x louder here. And the service was not great, when we needed the waitress or anyone they weren't to be found. Food was nothing to write home about. I had my second & final "experience" at "Leones" on Saturday night, October 13. We arrived & were seated promptly. The table wasn't approached for about 15 minutes, even though Staff was "running around" the loud & busy dining room. Our order was taken: 2 salads & 3 entrees. 22 minutes later the salads arrived... one, the House Salad was abundant, fresh, & had the nice touch of thinly sliced anise root as a garnish. The other, a bed of limp & brownish chopped Romaine with tiny "Pepperidge Farm"-like croutons...their Caesar Salad. 17 more minutes later, the entrees arrived. Mine, a bland & pedestrian version of Chicken "Francaise". My friends expressed satisfaction with their choices, excepting the Caesar Salad. The restaurant & service definitely met my lowest expectations & proved that not even a talented star from a "reality" TV show, such as Gordon Ramsey, can do more than rearrange deck chairs on the "Titanic" of a sinking enterprise. read more

My boyfriend and I live locally and decided to order delivery. I ordered a grilled portobello panini as the menu listed the ingredients portobello mushrooms, red peppers, and goat cheese. You would imagine my disappointment when I bit into my panini and realized that it in fact DOES NOT have goat cheese but mozzarella cheese. If I had been told on the phone that they were out of goat cheese, I would not have had a problem, however I was not informed of that. We chose to eat outside as it was a beautiful Summer evening. We asked advice on a few items from our very professional waitress and each of her suggestions was spot on. We love the food here. The ginger call Amari is out of this world. Melts in your mouth not chewy at all. The pasta is delicious. But please do something about your servers. This place needs some front end management! Dined there last Saturday and the place was in total chaos. First they lost our reservation and then after finally being seated waited for what seemed like forever for a waiter to appear. Couldn't find anything to open our wine with and 3 of our 6 wine glasses were filthy. After finally ordering our appetizers which took about 30 minutes still no bread for the mussels appetizer! Calamari appetizer had to be sent back as it was not even close to edible. Waitress informed us that they were out of bread. If it were not for the fact that we had elderly people with us we would not have stayed. I will give it one star because that's the least you can give. When the dinner finally arrived it did make up for the chaotic service as the dinners where okay. Not planning on returning. Sorry Leone's! read more
