Honestly, if you're looking for the pictures of the food, I haven't posted I wanted because they look pretty similar to donuts, but they are nothing like it. This is next level of donuts they've been around for more than 60 to 70 years and they were maintaining the quality of the food, hot donut chewy crunchy, and filling of these donuts are the magic people inside will explain you the history of displays go ask them a question they are so nice. The ambience of this place is not changed because it's always been the same amazing service. I can't ask for more.
Leonard's Bakery is (and always will be) an absolute Oahu classic. It's one of those rare, iconic spots that survived the ever fluctuating economy and the COVID-19 pandemic. I always add this spot as a recommendation to any friends visiting Oahu even though it may seem overrated. Whenever I'm back on the island, I always stop by to grab their guava or rotating flavor-of-the-month malasadas!
Leonard's, I'm completely sugar-coated in love with you. We hadn't originally planned to stop by here this afternoon but it was definitely on the agenda. You can't go to Hawaii and not get a freshly made malasada. Nadine took us to the O.G. spot and wow, the line was steep. Arizona eateries do their own version of malasadas with some places adding the filling to order. Perhaps it's because we were on Oahu but these malasadas were especially good. At $2.20 each, just get one. You don't even need filling because they are perfect already.
Must visit bakery and don't mind the line it moves fast and guarantee a fresh hot malasadas. We got the coconut, guava and macadamia malasadas and highly recommend the first two but the macadamia tasted more like a vanilla not strong on the nut side. Their coffee is delicious too! Loved their service super friendly. And a not there are no seating area
This place is for sure overhyped. The malasadas themselves are VERY good. Hot, fresh, crispy on the outside, soft and chewy inside, and the sugar coating is perfect. But the filled ones? Big letdown. The filling tasted like prepackaged pastry filling to me rather than something fresh and homemade. I tried the filled malasadas expecting them to be the best part, but I would much rather have the plain malasada. We were not impressed with the butter mochi, either. I wouldn't bother waiting in a long line but if there's no wait - grab an original.

We came here because of all the hype and honestly, I think it comes down to me just not being a fan of Malasadas. The service here is great. They are very efficient and the Malasadas come out fresh and warm. So why didn't I like them? Well, my daughter ended up getting one each of the filled ones, but I just didn't care for the fillings. Maybe I just needed a plain one. I definitely think this place is worth a visit, but just not for me.
The malasadas are so good that I visited three times during my vacation. The first two times, I came very early (6:30 or 7am) and had no issues with parking. Plus I was done within 10/15 minutes. The third time, I visited about 2:30pm and the line was out the door, a person was directing traffic in the small parking lot. It was crazy but the service was fairly quick (25 minutes), considering the crowd. The place is small and just for placing orders! There's no place to dine-in. Orders are placed inside and picked out outside from the pickup window.
People go here for one thing and it's the obvious one, malasadas. But I would like to highlight another item that is quite tasty as well, which is the butter mochi. Since you are getting sweets, black coffee balances out the bites well but each person has a preference with their coffee. While crowd seems intimidating, they are just waiting for their order. You order inside and wait outside for pickup. You can also call in and pick up as well. Saves time tbh. As for the malasadas, it is a fluffy donut texture with sugar coating the outside. You can get sugar, cinnamon sugar or li hing. Filling options are custard (best), chocolate, haupia (coconut), macadamia, guava, and lilikoi. Tasted amazing! Only reason they didn't get a 5 star is due to their unfriendliness and interaction. Sad but it is what it is.
This place is definitely a tourist favorite, so expect a line pretty much any time you visit. Thankfully, the process is well organized. You wait in line, place your order at the register, step outside, and wait for your name to be called. Even with the constant crowds, I was impressed by how efficiently they operated. They have multiple registers open to take orders, so the line moves much faster than it looks. The pickup process was just as smooth, and I didn't feel like I was waiting very long. As for the food, everything we tried was delicious. It's one of those places where you really can't go wrong with the menu. The shop itself is on the smaller side, so it can feel a bit cramped while you're ordering. Fortunately, most people grab their food and go, which keeps things moving. Overall, despite the popularity and long lines, the efficient service and consistently good food make it well worth the wait. Pro tip: make sure to eat it as soon as you get it because that's when the Malasadas are the best!
I'm really simple when it comes to treats I like. This wasn't the place for me. You order inside and wait outside for the staff to call your number. The staff taking the orders were friendly and helpful but the one calling the orders was just rushing. I ordered one original malasada and wasn't impressed. My friend ordered one macadamia nut malasada and a guava muffin. Her muffin wasn't in the bag and when we showed the receipt, the receipt was taken and we waited over 10 mins for no one to resolve the issue. We went back in to talk to the staff we ordered from and she was surprised we never received our muffin and helped us. If you like cinnamon sugar type of sweets, this is right up your alley.
I was like, "How good can these doughnut-looking things really be?" But they totally lived up to the hype. The texture so good. They came out warm, fluffy, and light. Today's special flavor was raspberry, but we got the macadamia, haupia, and guava. They were all so good! They often have long lines, but we got lucky today, and the wait wasn't too bad. We loved the souvenir shirts too and loved the price. Service: A+++
So glad we were able to grab these warm, delicious malasadas one of the mornings in Honolulu. They were SO good and FRESH! It was extremely crowded, but rightfully so. We struggled to find parking, so we did what multiple people were doing: stopping the car to the side and having a few people go grab the doughnuts. We tried to try all the flavors, and my favorites were definitely the macadamia and custard. Surprisingly, the dobash (chocolate) wasn't a favorite. If I'm ever in town again, I'm 1000% getting these. I also loved the story behind Leonard's Bakery. Beautiful.

Leonard's Bakery has been serving up their iconic Portuguese malasadas since 1953. No trip to Oahu would be complete without stopping by. A malasada is a sweetened yeast dough, deep fried and then coated in sugar. They also offer malasadas with a filling. There is usually a line to get into their store, and after placing one's order there is a short wait outside where they call your number when it's ready. All orders are freshly prepared when you order and should be eaten immediately to fully appreciate how good they are Malasada ($1.85) - Soft and fluffy on the inside these warm malasadas tasted incredible and were melting in my mouth. I tried their original which had a sugar coating and the perfect amount of sweetness. Malasada Puffs Fillings ($2.25) - Filling options included custard, dobash (chocolate), haupia (coconut), macadamia nut, guava, and their featured flavor when I visited was ube. All of the fillings were good, although I felt the custard, haupia, and macadamia nut were so close in terms of taste and probably my favorites. The guava was unique with it's slightly tangy and fruity flavor. I appreciated that the filling had a thicker custard consistency and not a liquid one like one of the competitor shops. Overall I can see why Leonard's Bakery is such a popular spot to satisfy one's sweet tooth. Pricing is reasonable. There's only about 10 spots in their parking lot, or you could try to search for street parking in the immediate vicinity. read more

When you see an establishment with a line out the door you know you have to try it. Do not get discouraged by the parking. Just don't make the mistake I did it is a 1 way parking lot. I got stuck with a person who couldn't pull out after coming in the wrong way. Parking moves quickly or you can park on the side street. The ppl outside are the ppl who have already ordered and waiting for their number to be called as they are make fresh. My children went inside while I parked and it was perfect timing. I ordered a chocolate malasada and a doz regular sugar. The chocolate was a bit messy and very rich. The sugar ones were just perfect. This will be a stop everytine I visit. read more
I did the touristy thing and went to Leonard's. It was good for sure. No where to sit, walked to the park across the street to eat. Line was super long but moved pretty quick Malasadas were great. First time i had one. For those who don't know what they are, they are basically cream filled donuts. We got one of each and split. Worth the stop if you have time. read more
When in Hawaii a stop at Leonard's Bakery is a must to try the traditional malasada. A malasada is a traditional Portuguese donut (with no hole) left behind in Hawaii by Portuguese settlers in the early 1900's. Leonard's has been making them since 1953 and is the original Bakery to have first served them. This Bakery is for takeout only and you'll see a crowd here no matter the time. No worries as they get you in an out in about 10 minutes including wait time for pickup. Your malasadas as fried fresh and arrive warm and ready to eat. You can order them in original (plain sugar), cinnamon sugar coating, or Li Hing (dried plum coating). I opted for the original and was not disappointed! I finally tried Leonard's after hearing so much hype. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to expectations for me. I've had my fair share of malasadas over the years, and honestly, these were some of my least favorite. The texture and flavor just didn't stand out, and I kept waiting for that "wow" moment that never came. That said, Leonard's is definitely a spot worth visiting at least once! it's iconic and clearly loved by many. But for me, it was a one & done kind of experience. Leonard's is usually on the list of must-try foods in Honolulu. It's def very good but can be quite sweet, depending on the filling. My favorite flavors were macadamia nut, haupia (coconut), and guava. They were very soft, warm, and flavorful. It's like a filled donut but on another level. The parking lot is very small so we had to find street parking. The service there was pretty fast considering it's made-to-order. The malasadas came out extremely hot. It's like your childhood dreams were baked into the air. Yes, there's a line. Is it long? Absolutely. Is it worth it? Like winning the dessert lottery. I went for the half dozen malasadas, each one a warm, pillowy bite of heaven. The creamy fillings were next-level, but my top three MVPs were guava (tropical glory), macadamia (nutty perfection), and haupia (coconut-flavored happiness wrapped in sugar). Customer service was great--friendly, fast, and full of aloha--and their merch game is surprisingly strong. I didn't know I needed a malasada T-shirt until I saw it... now it's part of my wardrobe. The whole week I was in Hawaii, I went there every morning, it became part of my routine! No other place even comes close. You can truly taste the quality and freshness in every bite. Very quick (and friendly) service especially relative to the volume of customers they have here. Leonard's is in the style of a 50s-esque diner, with the space inside only available for ordering. There's space directly outside the bakery to pick up your order via a window. When I went, my friends and I didn't see any seating, so we walked over to another establishment to sit down. (I think the experience is improved if you go by car due to the ample parking - we came by bus.) And obviously, the malasadas are delicious. read more

You have got to try Leonard's malasadas! Whenever we are in Waikiki, we make the trek over to Leonard's for a fresh hot malasada, a Portuguese fried dough with sugar brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants from the Azores. You won't find them on mainland Portugal. They are delicious! read more
Let me start off by saying it's worth the hype! We walked here from our hotel and it's low key a push because it's so hot lol but when we got there fortunately there was no line and we walked right in! When you walk in there is this whiff of deliciousness like the smell of sugar and yummy baked bread! Which obviously that's what you're getting. We got 2 each! A sugar one with no filling, papaya filled and the sweet and spicy which was my favorite! We decided to eat them right away at the park across the street while they were still warm! I heard that Leonard's was a must try when visiting Oahu and after trying it myself, I 10000000% agree. Leonard's is a bakery that is well known for their malasadas, which is a Portuguese donut. I've tried several flavors from their menu and all of them were absolutely amazing. They make your donuts to order so they're hot and fresh when you get them. I loved the contrast between the warm and fluffy dough and the cool fillings. All the fillings I tried were really good and I feel like you can't go wrong with anything. I've made a few trips here and I'd say the crowds can be a hit or miss, but you should be ready to wait because there's a good chance of that. Service here is friendly and the store itself is cute and pink themed! This is more of a to-go spot though as there is no place to sit and eat, but a lot of people were enjoying their food standing in the parking lot. read more

Hit up Leonard's Bakery for fresh, made to order malasadas. Busy on a weekday, wait was 10 minutes. Prices are $1.85 USD to $2.25 USD with 9 flavours. Ordered 30 donuts (6 cinnamon, 6 ling hi, 6 haupia, 6 macadamia, 3 guava and 3 blueberry). All were great but the guava and blueberry were the favourites. Delicious filling; get the puffs. read more
Review disclaimer: I am not a fan of pastries/donuts etc. My friends and I came here for dessert after lunch and got one of each malasada. The only one I liked was the custard. Everything else (especially guava) tasted artificial to me. Just doesn't hit the spot for me but if I were to come again, I'd probably get the plain one or the custard. My bf got the coffee here too $3.75? I think and it was just plain off the pot diner coffee. Nothing special/not that great. I do not recommend the coffee. Parking lot is pretty tight so you better be a good driver! Lines move fast, you order inside and pick up outside/eat outside. There is no dining area. read more

Served hot, you place the order and pay inside, then wait outside for your number to be called. Didn't take long this time (crowds can be large, so the wait varies). Came to Oahu for the first time and you just know I had to try Leonard's. There is sometimes a really long line and at other times there's no line at all (we drove by it a few times before actually stopping). We got 6 malasadas - 2 classics (cinnamon & li hing) and 4 puffs (coconut, chocolate, guava, and lychee). They are huge and oh so doughy yet still very crispy with so much filling. To be honest, we couldn't really tell which one was guava and which one was lychee but regardless, the flavor of each cream was delicious. The li hing is a sweet and sour sugar, and it's kind of an acquired taste. I found it to be a little too salty for my taste but it is unique. read more

A malasada is a fried pastry, slightly crispier and chewier than a donut and without a hole. Portuguese immigrants brought malasadas to HI at the turn of the 20th century. There is a Portuguese bakery in HNL that is known for its malasadas, Leonard's Bakery. Arsenio and Amelia DeRego arrived in HI in 1882 to work in the sugar cane fields. Their son and wife, Margaret and Frank Rego Sr., opened Leonard's Bakery in 1932. The bakery was passed on to their son, Leonard Rego Sr. in 1952, with his mother encouraging him to sell malasadas, which started this iconic dessert to be placed on the map. Leonard Rego passed the business to his son and current owner, Leonard Rego, Jr. His son, Leonard III, helps out in the bakery and hopes to extend the family name to the bakery one day. Notice how the name "Leonard" is used repeatedly in the family? Leonard is Frank Rego's middle name, which he also named his son at birth, Leonard, who named his son Leonard. Hence, it was easy to name the bakery, "Leonard's Bakery." Note that the proper spelling of malasadas should have two s' in the middle, which should be "malassada." However, when the bakery first opened, it was misspelled intentionally with only one "s" and never corrected. In addition to selling its iconic malasadas, they also sold pao doce (sweet bread), decorated cakes, danishes, rolls, pies, and the whole gamut of pastries. Who remembers selling Leonard Bakery's fundraiser tickets for their school club? Or tv personality Lucky Luck doing their commercials? But with the passing years, its focus has changed, with fundraisers and baked pastries taking second importance to the more prominent malasadas. Leonard's still offers limited pastries that include: apple/blueberry squares, pinwheels, danishes, cupcakes, etc. There are also souvenir merchandise: caps, lanyards, tote bags, clothing, stickers, luggage tags, plushies, mugs, etc. With the popularity of malasadas, Leonard's expanded to a 2nd location (franchised) in Yokohama Japan in 2008 and eventually introducing food trucks called "malasadamobiles" in the 1980's to cover the entire island of Oahu: Koko Marina or HI Kai, Waikele, Pearlridge, and Kaneohe. While it's less congested at a malasamobile, some say you get the same malasadas here as in the bakery, but I prefer those in the bakery that are made in larger batches (just a personal preference). The malasada are fried until golden brown, with the inside fluffy and light, and the outside a little crunchy and chewy; it's doused with lots of granulated white sugar. It comes in various flavors: original; covered with cinnamon sugar, or li hing powder); filled with custard, dobash (chocolate), haupia (coconut), macadamia nut, guava or pineapple. They're best eaten warm, and I personally like the simpler original flavor, as it was what I had grown up with. Located in the residential area of Kapahulu lined with restaurants and businesses visited by both locals and visitors, Leonard's Bakery is a Honolulu landmark with its flashing neon sign at curbside. Whenever I have a craving, we would drive by Leonard's Bakery. It can be crowded with tourists waiting for their orders and the parking lot congested with drivers waiting for spaces to open. I would happily wait until the next time we're in the area to see if it's less congested. Customers are in a single line that goes through the store, where you put in your orders. You pay the cashier and is given a receipt with a number on it, as you are told to wait outside until your number is called. Within minutes, you'll hear a batch of numbers called via microphone. There's a very efficient system, as the malasadas are made in batches and in the orders that they were submitted. Note that to get their signature pink box with the Leonard's name in blue, you'll need to order a minimum of 6 malasaladas; otherwise, they would be put in in pink plastic bag. Staff is friendly, patient, and welcoming your order. They are efficient, ensuring that you're not holding up the line. Hence, while the line seems long, it moves quickly. And don't forget to request the 10% kamaaina discount on Mondays only, which staff will happily oblige. Hours are daily 5:30a to 7p, where many tourists congregate for an early breakfast before their around-the-island tour. We're grateful that Leonard Rego Jr. honored his heritage by taking over the bakery in 1952 to what it is now today. We look forward to his son extending this legacy to future years. And we'll enjoy these delicious malasadas whenever we can! Support local! read more

In our multiple visits to the island each time, everyone talks about these malasadas. We decided to get a dozen of the cinnamon sugar and sugar. I'm not big on the filling, but I'm sure those who enjoy it would love it. The line was very short on the inside and then you took your ticket and waited by the car window. Within 5 to 7 minutes, I had a steaming hot box full of delicious pastries. If you are in the area traveling or local, you definitely need to try this. These are so good. read more

This was a delight to try! Hot and fresh warm donuts dipped in sugar....what's not to love? We lucked out and there was not much of a line on a Wednesday afternoon. You go in to order and then there is a to go window. We didn't wait long at all. They have other goodies for sale too. Unfortunately my expectations were very high for the filled Malasadas but the fillings were gross. They tasted watered down somehow and just ruined the experience. Luckily we got one plain cinnamon sugar donut and that was "chefs kiss". I wish I got more plain ones. Literally not one filling was liked by anyone in the family. Can you take it home to the main land?
Yeah, but order it with no sugar. Instead ask for a a side of sugar. When you get there, reheat them in the microwave or air fryer, and sprinkle the sugar on top. Will taste (practically) like new.
