GMonkey do: Poi Donuts
Ghost T.

There's a POI Donut and then there's DA ORANGE DONUT! HO! Game changa! Surprised I hadn't reviewed already, but hands down one of best local bakeries in town. GMonkey been gifted boxes from here before flying out. A favorite omiyage amongst our friends! We all have our favorites and mine are BUTTER ROLLS, POI & ORANGE! GM626

This place is always busy. There's always a wait. People come for their famous poi donuts. They expanded and made strawberry donuts. Now, they have a new flavor, orange donuts. I've never tried the orange, but the poi and strawberry are pretty awesome. I picked up two poi donuts $1.55 each, two strawberry donuts $1.55 each and a piece of banana bread $1.29. I was lucky to get the last two strawberries. The person that came in after me asked if they had anymore and they said that it was sold out. Come early to get your preference. My son likes the poi one best. The donuts don't have fillings, but it's the sugary glaze that makes it good. Their banana bread is perfect. It was very moist, but not too dense.

1 dozen poi donuts for the office, all gone before lunch time

The ladies working at Kam Bakery are so sweet and work quickly. Stopped by there early on a Tuesday morning before work (about 6am) for some poi donuts for my office and was in and out, no line. I only come for the poi donuts, but they have a variety of other pastries. If you haven't tried their poi donuts then you're missing out. Believe the hype. I hope Kam Bakery stays around for years to come, with all these old school Hawaii favorites closing down lately.

No idea what the place looks like...no idea how the service is...no clue about the depth of their menu. What I do know is the glazed poi are Mark Y's very favorite donuts. And I know he was gifted a dozen of them. The first bite was amazing...so soft and silky and crazy sweet. And who doesn't love a purple donut? Hate to admit this we proceeded to pig out on them. Too yummy to feel guilt!

This was my last stop before heading to the airport. I don't really care for donuts but the poi donut is my all time favorite. It's fluffy and sweet! The poi flavor isn't prominent but I still love it anyways lol. The banana roll is has a light banana flavor - not artificial tasting and goes so well with a cup of coffee.

I kept thinking it was a mistake when I saw their hours, but it's true. They are open at 2 AM on weekdays and 3 AM on weekends. They only close on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. I went very early in the morning, so there were no signs up to say what the different baked goods were and there were no prices listed. I just went off the menus that were posted on Yelp and the prices that were on it were current. I bought, a long John, a chocolate Long John, bread pudding, cornbread, banana bread, banana cream cheese, cinnamon cream cheese roll, glazed croissant, strawberry glazed donut. The baked goods were nice and soft and moist. Some of them were on the sweet side and I wish I had a glass of milk to go along with it, which really would have made it extra delicious. Everything was delicious. The service was quick, but the person serving me wasn't particularly friendly just strictly business.

Founded in 1978 by Daniel and Geramie Paglinawan, the family-owned Kamehameha Bakery in Kalihi is known for its iconic poi glazed donuts and extensive array of delicious pastries, such as various donuts, turnovers, fritters, rolls, cupcakes, cookies, Danishes, malasadas, breads, long johns, bread pudding, and more. The bakery name was chosen to honor King Kamehameha I, the first ruler of the Hawaiian Islands. The Paglinawan Family wanted to connect its business with Hawaiian history, tradition, and the legendary status of monarchy. It also serves as a local identify and a sense of pride. Daniel is the baker who has been trained in the Philippines, and Geramie is the primary customer contact who works onsite, maintaining the bakery's local, community-found atmosphere and puts in her personal touches. Daughter, Lisa, now helps her parents at the bakery. Some of my favorites include: * Poi- glazed donut. The bakery's signature item that is subtly flavored with taro, which gives it a vibrant purple color on the inside, and is soft, chewy, and pillowy with a sugar-glazed exterior. * Poi haupia. This purple malasada is generously filled with a delicious amount of coconut bits and coconut cream in the middle. * Hopia. My current favorite, a crispy flaky crust that has a sweet onion and black sugar filling. Hard to imagine, but the onion and black sugar complement each other and make a delicious treat! (Thanks to Yelper Glen A. for suggesting this, as I would not have ordered this on my own.) * Cream cheese cinnamon roll. Who would have thought to spread a cream cheese mixture topped with sprinkled nuts to a cinnamon roll? The cream cheese is not overly sweet and complements the roll well. * Glazed mini croissant. Perfect iced sugar glaze to these delicious croissants! Also very popular are slices or loaves of banana bread that are soft, moist and not overly sweet. The owners use fresh bananas to enhance its flavor. I have yet to try these, as I normally make my own when I have overripe bananas. Not only are the pastries delicious, but are also so reasonable in price, as most are each under $2. One wonders how this bakery's prices can charge so low a price when other bakeries are selling their pastries for $6 to $7 each. As owner Geramie Pagliniawan puts it, Kamehameha Bakery has been able to do so because of pure dedication. Staff is efficient, quick, knowledgeable, helpful, and very friendly. They provide service with a smile. A no-frills, old-school ambiance, the interior merely has ovens in the back with clear display cases of is pastries in the front. Go early, as popular items sell out. Hours of operation are Mon to Fri from 2a to 4p and Sat/Sun 3a to 4p. Yes, you haven't misread the opening times of the bakery, as they do open at those ridiculous wee hours of the morning! Lines do form at all hours of the day, but they move quickly. This provides convenience to those who need pastries with odd starting hours at work and even those heading to the airport for their flights. Yes, pure dedication by the owners to have their pastries ready for sale at such hours! Located at the far end of City Square Shopping Center on Kalani St and across from Young's Fish Market, free parking is available in the shopping complex. However, stalls are tight and may be hard to find during peak dining periods due to the many restaurants in the complex. Kamehameha Bakery is the perfect place to pick up your pastries, knowing that they are delicious, so reasonably priced, and accompanied with great customer service! Thank you to the Paglinawan Family in making this bakery an iconic one for Honolulu! Support local!

Five stars! The poi malasadas are a must. I also enjoy the strawberry and orange ones too. It's sooo delicious and ono! Service is pretty quick and efficient, despite medium to long lines on the regular. Ambiance is like a bakery feel. Straightforward and good. The options of pastries are numerous. Hard to decide which ones, which is a good thing!

Strawberry Danish*, Cinnamon Cream Cheese Roll, Donuts Sugar, chocolate muffin, Banana Bread

One of my husband's coworkers brought in a bunch of pastries from Kamehameha Bakery. He literally saved one bite for me when he got home and it was SO good!!!! We had to stop by this bakery ourselves and get some full sized pastries. We arrived around 2:30pm on a Saturday - so, there wasn't a line, but less variations of pastries available. You can smell the aroma of freshly baked bread and sweet donuts right when you enter! FYI - there are no mochi donuts here like some of the yelp reviews shared. Also, you have to "special order" the poi (purple inside) pastry without any filling. They had the two different poi pastries with fillings (coconut or the black sesame). The custard danish looked delish and wish they had some cornbread. Our kids got the chocolate muffin and the sugar donut, which they devoured. Husband got the strawberry danish (because they were out of the blueberry one). I got the cream cheese cinnamon roll. We got two pieces of banana bread as well. Six pieces of pastries for $9.95 - what a steal! Customer-traffic is frequent - lots of people coming in and out to order. After surfing in the morning, this was the perfect treat for the family!

Poi and regular malasada

It's a bakery that one of my local friends reccomended that was good and tasty. My niece was grubbin on the pastries. I would definitely say it kind of had more substyance to the bite and was more pillowy. Staff: Nice (5/5) Sanitation status: Clean (5/5) Poi Malasada (5/5) This was surprisingly really good. I've never had a poi flavored malasada before so it was a new flavor and the glaze worked really well although I wish there was a sugar coated one. I would definitely reccomend getting this if it's your first time and don't know what to try. Malasada (4/5) The Malasada was definitely fluffy and was somewhat soft. The sugary coating on the outside was a nice mix of texture with the soft interior but I would definitely eat it fresh.

Every bite is the best bite!

This is the spot! They have a nice selection of donuts, malasadas, and other baked goods. I love to come here for the banana bread. It's not too sweet and it's soft and never dry. However, my absolute favorite is the cinnamon roll donut with the frosting on top. You know how some frostings are too sugary and hard. This one definitely is not. The frosting on top of this cinnamon donut is super light and creamy. When you bite into it, it's just so soft and sweet and creamy..best bite ever! The place is not very big, so it can feel a little cramped when you are waiting to order. On a positive note, the team works really fast so you are never waiting too long.

Alyssa T.

A great spot for all your baked good needs. There are parking spots along the outside, but this location can get crowded at times. There is no seating area for this location and everything is to go. They have a wide variety of pastries and baked goods. Everything that we tried was delicious and made for a great sweet treat.

Located at the Dillingham Shopping center across from Otage Restaurant and near Young's Fish Market. They are known for their poi donuts and some other items, got to go early, because they do run out of the great pastries they make. Went there and got a Dozen poi donuts and a dozen Strawberry orange donuts and apple turn overs which very good and everyone enjoyed it, the Strawberry and orange was the first time I've saw it and tried it. Service is fast and they pasties are fresh and tasty.

Ask the Community - Kamehameha Bakery

Is Kam Bakery Open tomorrow? I know it's MLK holiday and I was not sure if they are closed for it...

Kamehameha Bakery is open on Martin Luther King Jr Federal Holiday :)

I've been calling the number that is listed on Yelp for several days at different times of the day but NO ONE picks up the phone. Do I have to go to the store to place an order for future pick up?

Sorry bout dat. Dis is da numbah we wen call at about 745am. (808) 845-5831 Hope dis works.

What gluten/dairy free options are there?

Can you order in advance and pickup?

yes, they have not ever indicated what the *minimum* order size is

Does anyone know if they participate with a food delivery company? I tried searching but couldn't find an answer

No, they do not

What's their hours now?

Unbelievable but they open at 0300 yes, a.m. until 4pm

Are they open? Tried calling, phone rings & ring. Went to the bakery last week in the morning, no one there. Website says they are open?

Someone posted that they were open 5 days ago. There's an email address on their website, you could try that.

Does anyone know their hours right now ? I try to call and the dial tone keeps coming up

2 am-4 pm M-F 3 am-4 pm Sat & Sun

Does anyone know if they're open right now?

Because of COVID-19 Kamehameha Bakery hours have changed. They are open for business. It's best you order the Poi donuts ahead. While you're there Go next door to the Ube Bakery! If you like Ube you'll love their award winning pastries!

I know Haupia is coconut based. We ordered our usual haupia stuffed ones but it wasn't the cream/pudding kind. It was this coconut with cornstarch thickened stuff. What do I say to make sure it's the coconut creamstuff?

if it's not the cream type but like fine coconut shreds in a soft bun, it's the pandecoco, presently at $1/ea.

Open for Kamehameha day?

Of course !

What's the new address for this placr?

The Yelp listing is updated with the new address at 1284 Kalani St.

Why is this location closed?!?!?! And since when?!?!?!

A long time ago lol. The location is small and the parking is horrible. They are now in the Dillingham Plaza where Chuckie Cheese is except on the opposite side of the parking lot

Founder Leonard Rego pioneered commercializing them, creating a cult following for the crisp-on-the-outside, doughy-on-the-inside treats. There's nothing like a nice, hot, and fresh malasada. At $2.20 each, there's just no point resisting. But their donuts are delicious all the same and can definitely scratch the itch if you do have a sweet tooth. As someone who's vegan, it can be hard to find a dessert I actually feel good about, and this is one of those places. Everything is taro-based and cooked in coconut oil, which I really appreciate. Just a heads up-all of their donuts are taro donuts. The flavors come from the toppings, so if you see something like a strawberry one, the donut itself isn't strawberry--it's the topping. Their offerings change, ( they do have their core donuts that don't change-and I usually go for one "naked"--no glaze. Sometimes I'll get the honey and sea salt one. If you don't want a whole donut--or you're eating in your car and don't want to make a mess--their little donuts called Holeys are the perfect pop-in-your-mouth option. The place has always be well kept and clean - and they have a very spacious, and equally as clean, bathroom. They also have an app where you can check the menu, keep track of your rewards, and manage gift cards, which makes it really convenient. Also, if you're not signed up for their rewards program, do it. You're basically passing up free donuts if you don't. Give them a go, share your experience and if your taste buds celebrated. SYOY! So on this morning, when we had some free time, we decided to stop. The shop itself is rather small, with a couple of large display cases filled with donuts and a few small tables tucked into the corner. For my pastry on this morning, I chose the coconut croissant donut. From the time I stood in line until I was out the door was less than 5 minutes. My donut here ended up being quite good as it was light and you could really see the lamination in it. The coconut flakes on top added a nice flavor. The sticky glaze was fantastic as it reminded me of caramel and helped keep the coconut from falling off. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I enjoyed my donut here and was definitely eyeing the ube coconut cake donut as well.

Even if you're in…read moreHawaii, there's no reason to assume that donuts should not be the cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast. During our recent trip to Waikiki, we set out on foot with the sun to see what we could see. The quixotic blend of homelessness in front of the Fendi store really drove home the duality of this place. But that's also a different review... As for Donut King, he may well be the actual Monarch of Fried Dough. A delectable selection of fresh donuts, still warm inside on a couple of them, and melt-in-your-mouth soft. My usual chocolate old fashioned was particularly good here... is that a hint of coconut oil? Or did I just have a little Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen on my fingers before I ate? No one knows. And at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. What does matter is that this place is a cool little donut shop that made me feel like a local when I walked in. Service with a smile, regular ol' donut prices instead of weird designer pastry mark-ups, and plenty of Aloha. Worth the trouble of trying to find parking, but even better if you're on foot, and can walk off that little bit of sweetness.

We now see a For lease sign on one of the greatest Donut shops there is! This dedicated, friendly, consistent owner, his wife, and child was a great honor to have met in my lifetime. I and my fellow colleagues frequent this perfectly hidden Gem buying dozens of Donuts for the team these past 6 years. Prior to that I would visit this shop on my own going to and returning from work as a daily regime. This place was very much loved by everyone you passed by in and out of this business. Donuts, Bear claws, Cinnamon rolls and so much more. Such a sad sad loss that this family owned business is no longer with us. I can personally say for 10 longs years , Mr Donut you satisfied my sugar cravings and I will never forget you. Where ever you are, God Bless you.

Mr. Donuts is your more classic donut shop, but that doesn't take away from what they offer which is goodness in each bite, my favorites are the oreo white frosting one, the claw and the fritter, but nearly all of them have great taste. You can follow them on Instagram and order through messaging, pay with PayPal or Venmo and let him know when you will be there (park on the street, he will tell you where) and they come and bring them to you. Excellent service, price ($20 for a dozen), and taste there's a reason why I come from Kaneohe to grab my Donuts .

I love Pipeline Bakeshops Malasadas! I have been to several Malasada places in Hawaii but | love…read morethere's the best for the following reasons: 1. the size of the malasadas: some restaurants tend to make their Malasadas smaller and when places do this it ruins the overall texture and quality of it. The bigger the malasadas size the more airy and fluffy and more bread layers that will be inside. 2. their malasadas always taste fresh and the same quality each time. 3. their malasadas don't feel oily or heavy at all Overall I would highly recommend this place for their Malasadas! I'm so happy to have found them. I can back multiple times on my trip. They also have other desserts too that I have yet to try. They have ice cream, cakes, and other desserts Also tip: if you are ordering a malasada also order a coffee or a matcha drink to go with it. The cinnamon sugar from the malasada just matches so perfectly with a drink this restaurant is also a nice place for walking! There's lot of stores and restaurants to walk around! I'm trying to remember but I think there was a book off that was not too far from here! If you either drive or maybe walk. Service: staff was super helpful and friendly while I was there. I was having an issue with my online order because my phone was being glitchy and they were so nice in helping :) Also wanted to note their branding is so cute!! They even sell merch items too

However, there are many alternative malasada purveyors throughout Honolulu, so I depended on local vloggers to find the best ones. This one popped up often on YouTube, and as luck would have it, we were dining at The Pig & The Lady on the next block. How calorifically convenient. We took the opportunity to stop by for a pre-dinner snack since they closed at 6PM. It's a cute shop with multiple sweets including quite a selection of housemade ice cream and delectable mouthfuls called Cake Bombs (Photo 10). We decided we would be good and ordered one unfilled Malasada each. Dusted with various sugar flavors, they were just $2.65 a piece. I went for the Coffee, while Jamie chose the daily special, Cinnamon (Photo 6). They were soft and tasty, quite comparable to Leonard's albeit a tad smaller. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing since we had dinner ahead of us. However, we let temptation get the best of us and shared a $5.50 slice of the Ube Haupia Mac Nut Bar, a yummy combination of sweet potato and ube topped with haupia (coconut milk pudding) on a macadamia nut crust (Photo 9). Truth be told, it stole the show from the malasadas. FOOD - 4 stars... the malasadas were good, but that ube dessert was next level AMBIANCE - 4 stars...really a takeout operation with a lot of temptations SERVICE - 4 stars...very calm and orderly TOTAL - 4 stars...yet another spot for sweet Hawaiian decadence RELATED - Exploring Hawaii?
