Such a nice spot, the interior is very bright and beautiful. Love that the donuts are made fresh. I tried the chai and it was a little bitter for my taste, but the donuts were so good. I dug in before remembering to take a photo, but the maple and coconut paired nicely and the passionfruit donut was bright and fruity.

While looking for a mural around Ala Moana, we stumbled upon Holey Grail Donuts and so glad that we did. The shop offers a modern airy vibe with high ceilings. Upon entrance, we were greeted by friendly staff. The menu is not large so we quickly decided on an iced vanilla latte, chocolate milk (not me, my friend lol), and lilikoi (passion fruit) and purple haze donuts. Their donuts are made to order and they use taro for their dough base. The donuts were delicious, soft and with a cake-like interior. My vanilla latte was super tasty and I'm guessing that could have had something to do with the macadamia milk they were using. It was a bit pricey but I wouldn't hesitate to go back for that latte and some donuts.

Delicious fresh locally sourced donuts in Kakaako. Yes they are a little pricey...but they are such a delicious treat sometimes simple is better than gigantic donuts slathered with so many toppings you cant actually taste the flavor of the donut. They are made to order and not sitting out all day they pair perfectly with some delicious coffee. I love that the poi is sourced from Hanalei and the chocolate is sourced from manoa chocolate company. The interior of the store is beautiful and relaxing perfect place to eat donuts and people watch!

If you've ever walked by Holey Grail, you'll know that the scent is intoxicating. How can you not want to walk in and eat some donuts? I'm so lucky to have Holey Grail in LA but I still love coming to this location whenever I'm in Hawaii. It's walking distance from where I usually stay so I'm tempted to get it every time. Luckily they have weekly specials and seasonal flavors so there's always something new to try. Holey Grail is home to 100% plant-based taro donuts but you wouldn't even know unless you knew. The texture is crispy/crunchy on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside. They are made to order and fried in healthy oils so you don't have to feel guilty having these. Each donut is about $4.50-$5 but it's worth it! Their signature classic is the original sin which is made with real maple and Hawaiian vanilla glaze. I recommend getting this one to start. They also have a classic called Hail Mary which is a cardamom rose flavor if you like trying something different. This time, I got to try the weekly special strawberry Fields which has a local strawberry and single origin matcha glaze on it. As I mentioned earlier, they make the donuts to order so it does take a few minutes but it comes out piping hot and is soooo good if you eat it right away (just be careful not to burn yourself). I loved the slightly tart slightly sweet slightly earthy taste of the strawberry fields. It goes so nicely with the taro donut. The staff is friendly and the space is nice and quiet to enjoy your donut. They also have a few seating areas outside too. If you've never had a plant-based donut before, you have to try Holey Grail!

2nd visit. I remembered how delightful my experience was when I visited Honolulu for my birthday a few years ago and was determined to go back. I told the other birthday girls I was traveling with that we were making a Holey Grail stop during our trip. They were unimpressed. Turns out they were skeptical about taro. It is indeed offputting in some forms. Not in these doughnuts. I was enjoying mine in a sunny seat outside when my sister friends me and tried. Suffice it to say everyone made their own doughnut purchase. The interior is spacious and quiet, and there is seating outside, as it should be- it's Hawaii. The passion fruit, liliquoi, is my fav. I had a chocolate and snickerdoodle. Not a fan of either. The passion fruit and Original Sin (maple) are divine.

Rings of Taro ~ My favorite sweet treat shop at Ward. . With a small curated seasonal menu and locally sourced kalo (taro), Holey Grail is fried kalo-dough heaven - glazed or sugar coated - og. Doughnuts are made when ordered and you can smell the fresh, scrumptious batches outside the door...Probably why I always find myself walking thru them. lol . I recommend trying any of their seasonal flavors but their classic Hail Mary is a keeper. For the first timers, fill a box and try them all...it's worth it especially if you're sharing. (: . Today, I got the Black Sabbath - a seasonal donut with black sesame and banana brulee - happily satisfied w/ my choice. . Lots of minimalistic wooden bench seating inside that feel like chapel pews. A nice open space to enjoy some dessert or hop on a laptop to get some work (or yelp reviews) done. . cheers!

Review from son son: It's a 6 out of 5. The donut is soft and crunchy, sweet, and DELICIOUS. A few notes from Daddy: This place offers taro donuts and no dairy topping options. Perfect for son son due to allergies. They are located behind Whole Foods. It's a cute spot that offers awesome taro donuts with cool and different topping options. The staff is always friendly and their packaging is top notch.

What the heck -- 5 stars! I have been coming to Holey Grail Donuts in Ward for years, including a recent stop that finally made me realize I had somehow never reviewed it. The taro donuts are still the best donuts on the island for me, which is saying something because I have worked through plenty of both the classics and the rotating flavors by now. The useful thing here is that the menu changes, but the floor stays high. Even when I cannot pick a favorite, I rarely feel like I ordered wrong. That consistency matters more than novelty, especially for a place that could have coasted on being photogenic and adjacent to Whole Foods. Instead, the donuts are made to order, built around taro, and good enough that the product carries the whole operation without much help The coffee, both hot and cold, is fine and strong. Nothing memorable on its own, which in this case is almost a compliment because it stays in its lane and pairs well with the donuts. The room is clean, spacious, and modern without feeling too slick about it: concrete walls, wood tables and benches, soft music, and wall art that gives the place some shape without turning it into a set. It feels built for people to come in, eat something good, and come back again

Donut fret! There's something for everyone from simple to complex. Kudos to my CIL who's originally from Kaua'i for recommending this place! Welcoming and friendly customer service from Antonio and Ana! Antonio said, "Feel free to come in when you're ready." Loved their eye candy, catchy names, and each description made me want to try all of them! Got my hands on a tasting box filled with Cosmic Churro, Wild Guava, Rick Martinez, and kindly informed Antonio if I'm able to replace Peanut Butter Cup with Original Sin due to my chocolate allergy. He happily accommodated my request. The best light cake tasting, made fresh to order, served piping hot, remained warm with each bite, non oily, flavorful, scrumptious donuts that's made with taro and coconut oil. I consumed all of it and still had energy afterward to walk around outside the area. Matcha Latte served hot also tasted fabulous and cleansed my palate with each taste of various donuts. Bring credit or debit card to pay. Cash is not accepted. Get the best deal for ordering nine donuts. Feel free to place your order via mobile on their website if pressed for time. Will definitely return when I'm in town. Dine in or enjoy vitamin D and scenery outside. Highly recommend.

The little shop is tucked between Whole Foods and the movie theater parking lot. Pros: Taro based donut makes for a doughy donut. Unique flavors and made to order. Cons: Best eaten warm, it's one of those that you shouldn't let sit for too long.

The donuts here were the best donuts I've tried. We ordered the tasting box and the reincarnation donut was great. I loved the toasted coconut on the donut as well, it was very creative!

These are absolutely stunning and beautiful donuts that are artfully created. Made with a vegan poi base, they tasted incredibly fresh. I love their eye for design, which is evident not just in the packaging but throughout the cafe's high ceilings, modern decor, and spacious, well-lit seating areas. They even have a poi plant right outside! To be transparent, I'm not a big donut fan; I personally much prefer malasadas. While these were good--and I slightly prefer their simpler flavors to the more over-the-top ones at Purve--I would always choose a malasada for its fluffier texture and slightly less sweet taste.

Holey Grail Donuts Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Holey Grail Donuts

I am confused several reviews say they offer gluten-free donut holes. Do they have gluten-free donuts or gluten-free donut holes, or mochi donuts?

    Do they have mochi donuts?

Great question! They do not have mochi donuts. Holey Grail Donuts, known for their unique taro-based donuts, are made with Hawaii-grown taro as the base, fried in organic coconut oil, and feature seasonal flavors using local ingredients.

Do they now offer gluten-free donuts or gluten-free doughnut holes?

Are these cake doughnuts or yeast?

They are not GF but close enough that GF people do not have a reaction. They are poi/taro donuts 🍩 in the shape of cake donuts or look like cake donuts. Hope that helps

    Do they accept Apple Pay?

    Yes, they do.

    Are there any vegan options?

Yes, everything except for one donut with honey

    Is it gluten free?

It's actually not! I asked when I was there a couple weeks ago. They use Taro so there is not as much gluten as traditional donuts .

Are all of the donuts vegan? What are the ingredients?

No the hot single has honey. The specials flavors though each week are usually all vegan

Ofc my kids highly enjoyed their donuts. Prices are really good on all the items we got ranging between $1.55 - $2.12; we spent right under $12 for everything. Will be back again!

So on this morning, when we had some free time, we decided to stop. The shop itself is rather small, with a couple of large display cases filled with donuts and a few small tables tucked into the corner. For my pastry on this morning, I chose the coconut croissant donut. From the time I stood in line until I was out the door was less than 5 minutes. My donut here ended up being quite good as it was light and you could really see the lamination in it. The coconut flakes on top added a nice flavor. The sticky glaze was fantastic as it reminded me of caramel and helped keep the coconut from falling off. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I enjoyed my donut here and was definitely eyeing the ube coconut cake donut as well.

During our recent trip to Waikiki, we set out on foot with the sun to see what we could see. The quixotic blend of homelessness in front of the Fendi store really drove home the duality of this place. But that's also a different review... As for Donut King, he may well be the actual Monarch of Fried Dough. A delectable selection of fresh donuts, still warm inside on a couple of them, and melt-in-your-mouth soft. My usual chocolate old fashioned was particularly good here... is that a hint of coconut oil? Or did I just have a little Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen on my fingers before I ate? No one knows. And at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. What does matter is that this place is a cool little donut shop that made me feel like a local when I walked in. Service with a smile, regular ol' donut prices instead of weird designer pastry mark-ups, and plenty of Aloha. Worth the trouble of trying to find parking, but even better if you're on foot, and can walk off that little bit of sweetness.

We now see a For lease sign on one of the greatest Donut shops there is! This dedicated, friendly, consistent owner, his wife, and child was a great honor to have met in my lifetime. I and my fellow colleagues frequent this perfectly hidden Gem buying dozens of Donuts for the team these past 6 years. Prior to that I would visit this shop on my own going to and returning from work as a daily regime. This place was very much loved by everyone you passed by in and out of this business. Donuts, Bear claws, Cinnamon rolls and so much more. Such a sad sad loss that this family owned business is no longer with us. I can personally say for 10 longs years , Mr Donut you satisfied my sugar cravings and I will never forget you. Where ever you are, God Bless you.

However, there are many alternative malasada purveyors throughout Honolulu, so I depended on local vloggers to find the best ones. This one popped up often on YouTube, and as luck would have it, we were dining at The Pig & The Lady on the next block. How calorifically convenient. We took the opportunity to stop by for a pre-dinner snack since they closed at 6PM. It's a cute shop with multiple sweets including quite a selection of housemade ice cream and delectable mouthfuls called Cake Bombs (Photo 10). We decided we would be good and ordered one unfilled Malasada each. Dusted with various sugar flavors, they were just $2.65 a piece. I went for the Coffee, while Jamie chose the daily special, Cinnamon (Photo 6). They were soft and tasty, quite comparable to Leonard's albeit a tad smaller. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing since we had dinner ahead of us. However, we let temptation get the best of us and shared a $5.50 slice of the Ube Haupia Mac Nut Bar, a yummy combination of sweet potato and ube topped with haupia (coconut milk pudding) on a macadamia nut crust (Photo 9). Truth be told, it stole the show from the malasadas.
