A dozen original (no filling) with sugar
    Kyle S.

We were at Royal Hawaiian Center for a performance and ate at the main food court afterwards. I wondered how the malasadas from Penny's were so I took a chance and bought a dozen original with sugar to share with other families we were with. I am not a fan of filled malasadas as they become just filled doughnuts and you lose what makes malasadas great. The slightly crunchy outside and airy inside with a little chewiness is what I consider a good one. They are made to order so be patient and it is worth having them fresh! I was surprised but how airy the inside was, not dense, and not dry. It had a nice eggy taste and can't go wrong with it coated with sugar. You know how some malasadas can make you feel full or even regretful afterwards? Not these as I had no problems eating one and wouldn't have minded eating more! I didn't though as I wanted everyone to have one to eat. I saw beignets on the menu so if they are just as airy but with powdered sugar on the outside, I'm sure they will be great. I'll have to try those the next time.

Penny's is a decent alternative to Leonard'ss and easily fulfilled my sweet tooth cravings. This shop is located in the second level food in the Royal Hawaiian which was a convenient 10 minute walk from my hotel. The malasadas were fresh and made to order. Their menu board is straight forward with options for traditional or filled. I opted for the filled malasadas and chose coconut creme, original custard, and ube creme. The box of 3 cost $11.25. Their malasadas have a slightly denser texture compared to Leonard's. They are still airy and geneoursly filled. Their ube creme was my favorite. I also enjoyed their coconut creme and original custard. The fillings are more on the liquid side. Thew malasadas come in either 3, 6, or 12. They also have beignets as an off menu item. Service fast and friendly.

I wanted to try a different malasada spot before my trip ended so checked this place out. As someone who ate a bunch of Leonard's a couple days earlier, the only advantage Penny's has IMO is the convenience if you are already staying in Waikīkī. They are more expensive (3 for like $10) but not as tasty. I really didn't like the special sugar of the day (forgot the name). It's fine if you are in the area, but it's not the best malasadas you can get.

$3 Malasadas in Waikiki. This is the plain one. It's located in the food court of Royal Hawaiian. The malasadas are made fresh while you wait. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. That's all that matters.

Don't let the size of these malasadas fool you- they're lighter than a feather and filled with the most airy cream! I came with my friends and we each ordered different malasadas- one coconut cream, one custard, and one ube. The ube flavor in mine was to die for- it's so fresh and has that signature nutty concentrated vanilla scent. They do get a little messy with the sugar and cream oozing out, so we grabbed some extra napkins from the woman in front! My malasada craving was fulfilled. They're one of the most perfect dishes to sum up the culture of Hawaii- a mesh of each immigrant population adapting to traditional flavors (and, in part, influencing others along the way). The history of culinary culture and how each ingredient/dish has made its way to these islands never fails to interest me.

Penny is good but not the best. I do appreciate they have flavors other places do not have including seasonal flavors as well. Not only do they offer malasadas Penny's also had powdered beignets on the menu. What I don't like is they force you to get a pack of 3 instead of being able to just get one. I came to try their malasadas and got a box of 3 of them. I tried their original custard, and two of their seasonal flavors: apple and peach. The custard was my favorite. The apple was my second favorite. The peach was good but it tasted more artifical. It was fried okay but the dough wasn't as soft as their competitors. The sweetness was also okay. Not too sweet which I liked. My 3 malasadas took awhile to make but I think they make them fresh which is nice. The service was okay. I was a little annoyed I had to ask what the seasonal flavors was when I said out loud "oh you have seasonal flavors" to the lady behind the counter. They definitely were not selling. Would I come back? Eh. There's just better options. I would possibly come back if I was already at the shopping center in the food court but to come here just for Penny's is a no for me. It's located in the food court at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. You can park and get validated if you spend over $10.

When in Hawaii. Had to grab some Malasadas before I went home. Located in the second floor in the food court of the Royal Hawaiian mall. Malasada means left over dough and the left overs have become the main event with Malasadas. I have had them in the states before at farmers markets. These were good but as before too sweet and sugary for me that's just their nature. These are made fresh while you wait. Minimum of three. I got custard, ube and coconut. The coconut was my favorite. I was surprised how liquid the filling was. I think a little thicker would be better. Make sure you take small notes or all the sugar covering will scratch your throat. I have to say I liked Leonard's better as these had more of a fried flavor and less fluffy fresh.

Ube, coconut, and original custard filled malasadas, $11.85 for 3, 2/2026
    Lesley L.

I'm no malasada expert, but these are the best I've ever had--made to order, so they are hot. The best part about them is that they are very light, they are like soft warm pillows! The crème fillings are also light and not too sweet. I've tried malasadas on other islands that claimed to be the best and was not impressed, the dough is heavy and chewy, fillings are to sugary and sweet. These are delicious. Got ube crème, coconut crème, and original custard. The only issue is that the malasadas are so hot that the crème gets runny, but that is a price I'm willing to pay for fresh tasty light malasadas!

Cinnamon sugar, Ube, Original Custard, and "Nutella"

Penny's is located in an outdoor food court within the Royal Hawaiian Center. It can get very busy with no seating, so it's more of a grab and go situation. We opted for the Cinnamon Sugar, Original Custard filling with Hawaiian White Sugar, Ube with Hawaiian White Sugar, and Nutella with the Cane Sugar. I was a bit disappointed as their Malasadas are more on the airy side. Not as thick or flavorful as I'd like it to be. Depends on what kind of consistency that you prefer to be honest! I just think the taste felt short. Their Nutella filling was also misleading as it tasted more of a salted chocolate? I don't think it went well with the Malasada. Everything else tasted okay! My favorite was the cinnamon sugar.

First time trying a Malasada and it was pretty good! I got two filled one with coconut crème and the other with nutella crème. I also ordered one not filled. In my opinion the non filled Malasada was the best. Malasadas came out hot and quick service was prompt.

3 Filled Malasadas - Coconut Cream!

When in Waikīkī, sometimes you just gotta follow your sweet tooth--and I'm glad mine led me straight to Penny's! First off, the POG juice... wow. Not sure if it was actually fresh-squeezed or made by magical island fairies, but it tasted way better than the one I had at Duke's. Super refreshing and perfect for that mid-walk pick-me-up. Now let's talk malasadas. We went for the coconut cream and oh man... pillowy soft, coated in sugar, and packed with filling. Absolutely hit the spot. If happiness had a flavor, it would be that coconut cream malasada. The vibe here is casual and quick, staff is friendly, and everything just feels like a "yes" decision. If you're wandering the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center and debating if you should stop--stop debating and just go.

4 different flavors on filling Coffee, Ube, Custard, Original Cream
    Ross T.

Located in Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in the food court on the 2nd floor. Need to get validation from establishment you visit a you have to spend $30.00 to get 1st hour free if not it is $3.00 per hour. If you call in your order for pick up the cost is $39.00 if you call in your order and if you go down and order it $31.20, the only thing is the make it when it is ordered and they only have 1 small fryer, so it will take a while for your order. If you are in a rush better to order ahead and pay the difference or go to pipeline! The coffee fill Malasadas wasn't that tasty and not much filling. The original filling was good, the Malasadas is light and not as chewy, as Leonard's or Pipeline so if you prefer the chewy type you would not care for Penny's. The custard and Ube were good and they do make daily flavors this time it was the coffee. We also tried before their Yuzu and Pina colada and Coconut which were very good.

    Filling is inconsistent.

Every morning, without fail, people gathered outside waiting patiently for pastries. No flashy signs. No gimmicks. Just quiet consistency. That alone intrigued me. By the second day, my mind was made up. I'm an early riser, so the plan was simple: go on my usual morning run and arrive before the rush. Japanese culture and craftsmanship have long fascinated me. Through close friends with family roots tracing back to Japan, I've developed a deep appreciation for the culture -- the discipline, the rituals, the precision, and the respect for process. There's a beauty in the intentional pace at which things are done. Nothing rushed. Nothing careless. This bakery embodied that philosophy perfectly. The space itself was small, modest, and aromatic. No overdesigned interiors. No influencer bait. Just the comforting smell of fresh bread and butter hanging in the air. Some bakeries hide behind elaborate architecture and presentation, but this place understood something more important: when the product is exceptional, the product becomes the attraction. The pastries ranged from playful and charming to elegant and refined. The Salt & Butter bread was an instant staple -- savory, warm, and impossibly light. The dough practically dissolved like air. Thankfully, nothing felt overly heavy, because I completely lost control of my ordering strategy. The Kobo Kuma -- a soft bear-shaped bun filled with homemade vanilla bean custard -- was perfection. Equal parts cute and comforting. The Cinnamon Roll was solid, but the Haupia pastry completely stole the show. For those unfamiliar, Haupia is a traditional Hawaiian coconut pudding found throughout Polynesia. The flavor here was subtle yet lingering, delicate without disappearing. The kind of flavor that quietly stays with you long after the last bite. Then came the Blueberry Danish -- beautiful, buttery, and perfectly sweet. I didn't even make it to the savory options this time, which honestly just gives me another reason to return. And I absolutely will -- whether back here in Hawaii or perhaps at one of their mainland locations in Los Angeles. Some places become popular because of hype. Others because of quality. This bakery earned its line.

Came across this place when searching on yelp. Once I got there, there was a line and I knew that was a good sign. I saw a sign saying they use 100% hokkaido flour from Japan (?)... so, although I was just looking for a matcha drink, I decided to try a couple pastries. I tried their salt & butter bread + a pastry that was filled with vanilla bean custard. IT WAS SO GOOD AND SO SOFT! I also got their banana matcha-- BOMB! I like how the banana foam isn't too much banana. It was a good balance. Service was quick! You just tell them what you want and everything came out quickly despite the long line I walked up to. It was a cute tiny bakery. Nothing crazy. Will definitely be a returning customer (:

It's a cute little shop with benches facing the windows to people watch. It was hard to pick one item, but I ended up trying the Char Siu Croissant. I loved the flavors combining the sweet glaze and the savory meat. It's now one of my go-to weekend treats!

Every butcher I've interacted with has been patient and genuinely helpful, especially when explaining different cuts of beef. I'm not a fan of cleaning chicken myself, so I really appreciate that they'll remove skin and bones in-house (you still pay for it, and they'll ask if you want to keep the scraps). Another big plus is that the meat is fresh, unlike a few other places I've visited that only carry frozen options. Bakery: I can't come here without grabbing a sweet treat. They offer a mix of sweet and savory pastries, and honestly, I haven't had a bad one yet. I don't have a single favorite because they've all been consistently good. In my opinion, they're best enjoyed the same day. They also offer seasonal and holiday pre-orders. Sandwich of the Day: The premade sandwiches start at 11am and are made with about 90% house-made ingredients, served on their focaccia. As someone who loves a good sandwich, this did not disappoint. There are a few seats inside but I usually take everything to go so I can get my meat into the fridge.

I love Pipeline Bakeshops Malasadas! I have been to several Malasada places in Hawaii but | love…read morethere's the best for the following reasons: 1. the size of the malasadas: some restaurants tend to make their Malasadas smaller and when places do this it ruins the overall texture and quality of it. The bigger the malasadas size the more airy and fluffy and more bread layers that will be inside. 2. their malasadas always taste fresh and the same quality each time. 3. their malasadas don't feel oily or heavy at all Overall I would highly recommend this place for their Malasadas! I'm so happy to have found them. I can back multiple times on my trip. They also have other desserts too that I have yet to try. They have ice cream, cakes, and other desserts Also tip: if you are ordering a malasada also order a coffee or a matcha drink to go with it. The cinnamon sugar from the malasada just matches so perfectly with a drink this restaurant is also a nice place for walking! There's lot of stores and restaurants to walk around! I'm trying to remember but I think there was a book off that was not too far from here! If you either drive or maybe walk. Service: staff was super helpful and friendly while I was there. I was having an issue with my online order because my phone was being glitchy and they were so nice in helping :) Also wanted to note their branding is so cute!! They even sell merch items too

However, there are many alternative malasada purveyors throughout Honolulu, so I depended on local vloggers to find the best ones. This one popped up often on YouTube, and as luck would have it, we were dining at The Pig & The Lady on the next block. How calorifically convenient. We took the opportunity to stop by for a pre-dinner snack since they closed at 6PM. It's a cute shop with multiple sweets including quite a selection of housemade ice cream and delectable mouthfuls called Cake Bombs (Photo 10). We decided we would be good and ordered one unfilled Malasada each. Dusted with various sugar flavors, they were just $2.65 a piece. I went for the Coffee, while Jamie chose the daily special, Cinnamon (Photo 6). They were soft and tasty, quite comparable to Leonard's albeit a tad smaller. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing since we had dinner ahead of us. However, we let temptation get the best of us and shared a $5.50 slice of the Ube Haupia Mac Nut Bar, a yummy combination of sweet potato and ube topped with haupia (coconut milk pudding) on a macadamia nut crust (Photo 9). Truth be told, it stole the show from the malasadas. FOOD - 4 stars... the malasadas were good, but that ube dessert was next level AMBIANCE - 4 stars...really a takeout operation with a lot of temptations SERVICE - 4 stars...very calm and orderly TOTAL - 4 stars...yet another spot for sweet Hawaiian decadence RELATED - Exploring Hawaii? I'm happy to see a local business thriving but I hope they can improve their customer flow. The baked goods looked as inviting as always but they seemed a day-old or something. The butter horn was hard and not flaky as I've come to expect and the chocolate of the Boston Creme donut wasn't creamy. They may wish to consider: 1, Clearly delineating the line for the restaurant from the bakery. It was super busy for both so there was a lot of confusion. 2. Perhaps placing the number machine for the bakery closer to the door? Tourists aren't familiar with the system so it leads to some unnecessary dissatisfaction. 3. The staff had to leave the counter to get coffee - hot or iced. The condiments for the coffee were on the showcase so people had to be in everyone's way to get their sugar and cream. In fact, if you were standing near the door you had to go through people waiting in line back into the establishment to get those items. But, with all this, the two ladies at the counter were remarkably composed and helpful.
