I've been a longtime fan of Lella Alimentari's original location on Manhattan Avenue, and so was delighted when they decided to open a new outpost on Havemeyer Street. The owner, Kiko, is trying to create an Italian neighborhood cafeteria-type atmosphere, where you might actually strike up a conversation with a neighbor, and it is also one of the few places in the city where half of the regulars are speaking Italian.
Similar to the original location, the menu is focused on simple light bites such as piadine, an unleavened flatbread served with cheese or vegetables as fillings. On this occasion, I instead opted for one of the "salads," served with goodies including a runny egg, shishito peppers, and olive oil-brushed toast. I also had an excellent Americano on the side, and a small but decadent bombolini to finish the meal.
This part of South Williamsburg has lost quite a few quality meeting spots over the years, and so Lella is a sorely needed addition to the 'hood. read more
