Arrived on a Saturday night, we had reservations and it seemed pretty busy, so I would recommend reservations. Very friendly staff. Promptly seated and order taken. Food came out quickly. Restaurant was very clean. The absolute highlight of this meal was the escargot in puff pastry. Great opportunity to try something new and we all loved it. After a long wait, I finally had the chance to try LeGrand. We started the meatball appetizer which was very lite and delicious. For the main course, I tried their famous burger which I just thought was okay. It was good, maybe I was expecting something else, but it was just okay in my book. Probably wouldn't order it again. The burger was paired with potato gratin which was very good. It was like a potato lasagna with cheese. Dinner was finished with the cornbread pudding, which a dud. Overall the ambiance was great, service started off strong, but it took some time to get the server to come back, clear the plates, get dessert, and get out. It certainly was good, but my friend and I think we would describe it as "like In-N-Out but with better cheese". The short rib and grits was very flavorful, just a touch too oily. Our first time to dine at LeGrand Kitchen and it exceeded our expectations! The menu may be limited compared to larger restaurants but everything is really delicious. The Burger lives up to its reputation and the steak is probably one of the best ever. The roasted Brussels sprouts are addictive they are so good! Our server, Grace was just right -- friendly but not overwhelming. The new location is very nice and the chairs are comfortable! We will definitely putting LeGrand Kitchen on our preferred list! I've been to LeGrand many times and I'm always pleased with the food and the service. I recently dined at their new location and I ordered the halibut and let me tell you something- it's hands down the best piece of cooked fish I have had in my entire life. I've eaten at a lot of places - including Michelin star restaurants, and this dish was absolute perfection. The fish was moist but with a perfect sear. It sat on a bed of gnocchi and asparagus and escargot. Every bite was a delight. If you don't normally go the sea route for dinner, consider it. You won't be disappointed! read more

Wow, this place is amazing. Everything we ordered was delicious and I'm already excited to come back and see what's different on the menu. Went in on a weeknight around 7pm and it was busy with a few open spots for two at the bar and a small booth (you will most likely be sitting very close to another table so be prepared it is small in there). We were served water right away and given a menu and a wine/beer menu. Ordered the oyster mushroom tartine for a starter and two of their house burgers. It took awhile to get the starter and the food so don't think you'll be in and out of this restaurant in less than an hour. However when we got the tartine it came out with two open face slices of bread with the toppings. I've never had a tartine before but I thought it would be on a fancier piece of bread.. the mushroom toppings were not scarce though. It was actually pretty delicious and I could've eaten that dish as my main meal. The bread was slightly crunchy and the toppings were flavorful. Next, we waited some more for our food. My friend and I both ordered the house burger because another friend had told us that it was the best burger they had ever eaten. That's a pretty big statement to live up to so of course we had to try it! It did not disappoint. I inhaled it practically. A little messy so ask for extra napkins. It does not come with French fries or any sides so that's a little weird but honestly it didn't need fries to balance it out. The burger was that good. They do have a few desserts but did not get the chance to try one. The staff was very friendly and genuinely seemed excited for us to try everything. Being a Pescatarian I found the menu to be somewhat limited as it's mainly meat forward, even the Rockfish came with sausage. However, what I did find on the menu was fantastic. I decided on getting two small plates; the Tuna Crudo and Grilled Cabbage. Both were incredible and filled with great flavors. The Tuna Crudo was served with strawberries, yuzu, and candied jalapeno's. I ate every bite with each ingredient and the flavor were perfect together. It was the best Tuna Crudo I ever had. The grilled cabbage was also excellent. It came with a buffalo sauce, blue cheese, and pickled mustard seed. This was another hit with flavor combinations. The Chef obviously knows how to combine flavors. My wife got the meatloaf which she thoroughly enjoyed. For dessert we shared the chocolate pot de creme which was great. Had another great meal at LeGrand Kitchen this week. Their new location is a bit larger but I went right at 5pm and it filled up quickly so I highly recommend a reservation. They didn't take reservations in the past but they are a must now. I started with the Paloma to drink and the grilled cabbage as an appetizer. By far the best cabbage I've ever eaten. The drink was delicious also. I had to get the halibut with gnocchi, mushrooms and asparagus again because it was so freaking good last time and it was again! Butcher steak, shemear, the pimiento cheese, and the pot de creme. I've had it all, and LeGrand doesn't disappoint. We love to sit at the bar to watch them cook in the open. The chefs are always so warm and welcoming too! This review isn't about all their food but their cheeseburger. I've recently been studying the "best burgers in Virginia" list, and NONE of them hold a candle compared to LeGrand's burger. Double patty, griddled onion, pickled lettuce, jalapeno, American cheese, roasted shallot mayo, Big Marty bun. It's juicy, it's flavorful, the sesame bun makes it. There is simply nothing better! Enjoyed this restaurant twice before. Took a party of four for dinner, and was very surprised. This restaurant has gone from a sleepy little romantic restaurant, too noisy obtrusive establishment. We could not hear each other over our normal dinner conversation. It's too bad that a restaurant with excellent food has turned into into such a vocal establishment. I do hope the owner takes this to heart and does something to suppress the noise level. If he does, I would gladly return. Otherwise not. If you have yet to visit LeGrand, do yourself a favor and go as soon as possible. Friends had been talking about this place for months before my husband and I finally went, and it exceeded any and all expectations they had. We arrived at 7:30 on a saturday night to a wait of about 35-45 minutes. Far better than I was expecting for a small, beloved restaurant on a saturday night. We gave them our number and went to grab a drink at Hank's filling station. We were seated right next to the kitchen, and loved watching them make all of the dishes! The kitchen staff were great and answered any questions we had regarding the process and ingredients they were using. We started with the egg schmear and pimento toast. I like pimento cheese, but it's not necessarily something I crave. I was still thinking about this toast the next morning! So perfectly toasted with the most delicious combination of flavors and texture. I never knew I would be so into radishes but they were a great fresh addition here. The egg schmear was also good, and I don't normally even care for deviled eggs! They had a busy night and by the time we ordered, a few things were unavailable. This led me to the pork belly prepared with the barbacoa accompaniments of polenta, pickled onion, radish, and a frito crumble. I cannot fathom how it is even possible to get so much flavor into one dish. As my husband said, this was truly the epitome of the sometimes overused statement of "bursting with flavor." He ordered the butcher's steak, with farro, carrot puree, and a variety of other vegetables. It was equally impressive, and perfectly cooked. LeGrand Kitchen has been our favorite restaurant since their beginning. Whenever friends visit from out of town, this is where we always take them for a big meal. It has a fun, casual atmosphere, which my husband especially loves because he doesn't have to dress up to eat his favorite steak or pork chop. They do not have vegetarian entrees listed on their menu, but are always happy to make a vegetarian or vegan dish upon request. I have ordered the vegetarian dish each visit and it is always different depending on the fresh produce they have on hand and what the chef is inspired to cook that day. It never disappoints! We also love that the kitchen is open, so you can sit at the bar seating and watch your meal being made! We have ordered take out recently due to the pandemic, and the quality is just as excellent as if you were dining in. LeGrand, you're perfect. Don't ever change! This place has been on my list of places to try for a while and I'm glad that I finally got the chance to. The only thing consistently on the menu is their burger. And let me tell you, getting a table burger is the move. We knew we had to try it but there are so many yummy dishes we also wanted to try so we got ourselves a table burger. It was the perfect handful and nice and juicy. We also shared the grilled cabbage, kale salad, foie Gras, and pasta dish of the night. They were all excellent. I've been meaning to try this place for years now; it holds the title of best burger with a lot of people in this area. My husband and I stopped in on a Thursday night, the place was pretty full and we were seated immediately. The restaurant is on Colley near ODU, near a bunch of student housing. We parked behind the building where the hair salon is. Anyway, they have a small, nice selection of beer and wines. Nothing on tap, I believe. We got a big bottle of tap water (love that!) and placed our order. By the way, the tables are about 6-8" apart so you will hear your neighbors' conversation. Our neighbors were businessmen discussing patents, which was a bit annoying, but not the worst I suppose. We started with the deviled egg schmear. It's the "best part of the deviled egg" with Ritz crackers. It was not the most appealing dish... looked just like yellow mustard. Oh and it tasted more like golden mustard than egg yolk! We expected a little more pizzazz to this dish, it was very plain. I think it was just egg yolk, mayonnaise, yellow mustard, with paprika and chives on top. Would have appreciated a more interesting mustard like stoneground, and some different spices or herbs... just something. For entrees my husband of course had to try the burger at $10. It came out... without fries. He was super disappointed! Not that the price didn't include it, as $10 isn't bad at a fancy place, but the server didn't mention the lack of a side or ask if he wanted to add something. Come on, art or the upsell! Anyway, the burger? It tastes good. But it's a smashburger, no chance for medium rare or however you prefer your burger. It is very reminiscent of someone's favorite diner burger, classed up a bit. We both felt that Nouvelle and 80/20 have much better burgers though, especially Nouvelle has a legitimately unique burger. LeGrand just didn't. I had the smoked pork hash. This was seriously probably 2 pounds of food! It was large chunks of pork shoulder, with roasted vegetables such as leeks, sweet potato, and I believe turnip. It was... okay. It didn't have a lot of flavor besides the pork. The pork was also in pretty unwieldy chunks, so my husband and I spent about 5 minutes shredding all the meat. That made the dish a lot better, but then the meat was a little dry. It also tastes braised as opposed to smoked. It didn't have much of a flavor profile to it. The whole dish was very salty... but lacked any kind of spice/herb profile. I kept thinking that I couldn't wait to take the leftovers home and make my own hash with it... cook some garlic, onion, then add the ingredients and some thyme/basil/oregano. Obviously if you spent your time at dinner imaging how you could cook the food better... that's a problem! Our server was nice and prompt with everything, we were in and out within 40 minutes actually, which was nice because we had a show to get to. LeGrand, I'm sorry but you were forgettable. I love farm to table restaurants but I've noticed some of those places (looking at you Codex) just relying on high-quality ingredients and not preparing them in interesting/unique ways. Dear Yelper, try Clementine's or Nouvelle instead. Both are incredible. read more

This has been on my list of places to try for quite some time. We decided to come here one evening for date nite. It's a cute little spot. I can see it getting busy and crowded during the weekends so be sure to make a reservation. We started off with the egg schmear with ritz crackers, grilled peppers and the crab cake for appetizer. The egg schmear didn't taste like deviled egg it was missing more of the egg flavor, they do provide more ritz crackers. Just ask. The grilled peppers and crab cake was really good and would recommend those items. For our entree, we got the halibut and burger. The halibut was a good size. It was a pretty big cut of fish. I couldn't even finish it. It came with veggies and beans at the bottom. It was good and surprising filling. The famous burger which stays on their menu all the time was also very good. It was a double patty burger and it was juicy and made very well. Our friends in our party also got the steak which was cooked perfectly to medium rare and came with grilled veggies, also a good choice. For dessert we got the peach cake with a huge topping of fresh whipped cream, perfect ending. I asked if they had coffee as I didn't see it on the dessert menu and they didn't. So if you like coffee with your dessert like me, that was a let down. The staff was very nice and friendly and attentive. They explained items on their menu to great detail and came by to our table often to check up on us. I would give this spot another try as they do change their menu. read more

Good gracious, this place is good. LeGrand Kitchen is one of the smallest restaurants I've ever dined in in Hampton Roads but I love the vibe and the diminutive size makes for a very inviting, home-like feel. I went on Friday - early afternoon after they just opened for business. I was alone so they sat me at a bar which is right up at their kitchen. I get to see the magic happen and relax a little. The servers are friendly and bring to you a bottle of water. It looks kind of like a growler - pretty awesome if you ask me. I had an appetizer (the pork belly) and for an entrée I ordered their lamb stroganoff. Both items were delicious - the pork belly was tasty and the lamb was heavy. I was stuffed and was still full when I awoke the next morning. Simply put, I like everything that LeGrande offers. The entire staff is friendly and accommodating and they love to hear your thoughts on the food. It's not cheap, though, but is worth every penny. Like Nouvelle, I think my only complaint is that I waited way too long to dine here. If you haven't tried LeGrand Kitchen yet, do yourself a favor and check it out. You won't regret it. JV read more

This place is our go-to place for celebrating special occasions. I could not recommend this place enough; not only is the food great, the service and the atmosphere are top notch! Their menu changes seasonally, but you would be hard pressed to not drool over the selections. One of the most memorable appetizers I had from this place was a smoked beet humus. Visually, it was more art than food. The beet added shades of lilac and it was dressed with edible flowers. The dish brought out flavors of light smoke that blended with the natural sweetness of the beets and made for an amazing appetizer to whet our palettes and make us want more. Entrée-wise you can't go wrong with their burger, but I personally love anything they do with pork. I had a pork belly that offered me more than I could handle. The meat was succulent and just oozed umami. And don't forget to try their desserts! We had a brownie drizzle with a caramel sauce last valentines day and still talk about it 6 months later! I was finally able to get a delicious meal at the infamous LeGrand Kitchen and I was blown away. I had the soft shell crab BLT with damp tarter sauce in a big Marty bun! The soft shell crab was freaking delicious. The soft shell was seasoned and battered perfectly, there was a good quantity of sweet delicious crab meat, the addition of the thick cut bacon, juicy tomato, and lettuce just unifies all of the flavors in the sand which. LeGrand is currently doing curb side take out orders via text message, that process was very easy and smooth. The food came out quickly and fresh out the kitchen ! This hidden gem is making some of the best food in Norfolk, and probably in the whole region. A changing farm-to-table menu puts the emphasis on fresh, local flavors, and the creativity of chef/owner Stephen Marsh takes center stage. Regular appetizers like the Farm Egg Schmear (think deviled eggs, but as a spread, on Ritz crackers), Pimento Cheese, and Deviled Crab are not to be missed. And I love the Burrata when it's served with grilled peaches or melon and some smoked ham. Always check their social feed to see what specials are going that week, but I've been known to come through just for the burger-- best in town.
