Visited for brunch on Father's Day and arrived around 11:45 AM with no wait. One thing that could use some improvement is the check-in process. When you walk in, there's a desk immediately to the left, another larger one farther back, and a waiting area in between. Since there wasn't a host present, it wasn't immediately clear where we were supposed to go. Eventually, a little boy came out and led us to our table, which was honestly pretty adorable. The restaurant has a very cute aesthetic, and the seating was comfortable. There were a few cleanliness issues, though. Both of our chairs had crumbs in them, and there was also something on the salt shaker that probably should have been cleaned off. Neither issue was a dealbreaker for me, but it's the kind of thing that can leave a less-than-great first impression. For brunch, I ordered a Bellini, fried green tomatoes, and the New Orleans French Toast. The Bellini was fine, but the food was where this place really shined. The fried green tomatoes were delicious--clearly hand-cut and freshly fried, not those frozen, perfectly uniform slices you sometimes get elsewhere. The New Orleans French Toast may have been the best French toast I've ever had. Even without syrup, it was absolutely delicious. Our server, Heidi, seemed relatively new to serving, but she was friendly, checked on us appropriately, and made sure we had what we needed. The food also came out quickly, which was appreciated. I'll absolutely be back. I know this location recently opened, and they're probably still working through a few growing pains. But at the end of the day, I came for the food, and the food was excellent. That's what will bring me back. read more

Tried My Mama's Kitchen for brunch, and we were NOT disappointed! The restaurant is SO cute. I love the decor and colors chosen. It's cute for a date, a celebration, or just a day out with friends or family. While we were able to be seated immediately, it did take a little bit for our server to come to us. Heidi was our waitress, and she was nice. She did seem a bit flustered though. Not sure if maybe she is new. We had the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer, and I had the blueberry lemon ricotta pancakes with eggs and bacon. The only other fried green tomatoes I've had were at Tupelo Honey, and while those are good, you can tell they're a frozen dish they just fry really quickly. These tasted homemade today, and the remoulade sauce they're served with is really good! The pancakes were excellent; they didn't even need syrup. I like that they use shell eggs and not those egg beaters. Everything came out quick and fresh! I have zero complaints about the food. I will definitely be back again for brunch and to try their dinner menu! read more

Stopped in shortly before 1800hrs for dinner tonight. There was a sign on the door stating that they would be closed at 1700hrs for 1 hour. At 1800hrs the door was still locked and I was informed that the doors would open in 15 minutes. At 1820hrs the door was still locked. Myself and the rest of the patrons were finally let in shortly thereafter. When we were finally seated and ready to order I was informed that they were out of my top two choices (ribs or brisket). They were also out of meatloaf and baked chicken. I settled on the cheesesteak. Not what I wanted but it was good. Actually, it was really good but not what I came in for. Almost forgot to mention that the sides came in paper throw away cups. Also noticed that two ladies ordered what looked like banana pudding and their desserts were also in a plastic cup. The best part of the visit was Lydia. She is the bartender and was also our server. Lydia was absolutely wonderful. We all noticed how she stayed constantly busy and had a continuous smile on her face. My Mamas Kitchen that young lady needs a raise. Lydia is hands down MMK's best asset. Don't know if you will see this Lydia but you are the main reason we will be giving MMK another try. All in all I might try them one more time. It's been roughly 2 years since we've heard anything from My Mama's Kitchen. They closed their Shore Dr location in order to move to a bigger venue on Little Creek Rd. I'm sure many figured they'd be up and running again in a few months, but this move took much longer as they opted to remodel and rebuild their new location on their own. Well, My Mama's Kitchen finally opened the doors to their new location just before Mother's Day. I told my mom about them, so we tried them out on the afternoon of 5/20/26. Located across the street from Wedgewood Plaza (i.e. The Banque is in Wedgewood Plaza), off the bat there is much more available parking. And once we walked inside, you can witness how spacious Kitchen is compared to their old location. The venue looked good and you can tell plenty of work was put in towards remodeling. We waited a little bit to be seated - there wasn't a host there to initially greet us. An employee came out, saw us and proceeded to seat us, although it was a little weird she handed us their menu before we got to the table. I was a little confused because she asked us if we were dining in. Right after we replied, "Yes," she continued to give us the menu, then casually motioned for us to follow her to the dining area. We were sat and immediately greeted by a server who kinda helped guide us to our table. Our server was quiet, but nice, and there were stretches where she was absent. She was pretty good about refills and was all smiles during our visit. The absences were interesting, but there was another employee who helped us during the gaps. I talked to her as we were leaving and she told me she came over from The Stockpot. She mentioned she helped curate the menu and, at the time we were originally seated, she was bartending. She was clearly a FOH manager of sorts - on top of things and super nice. I'd return simply based on our interaction with her. Pivoting to the food - Kitchen's food was just as good as I remembered. Mom and I split an order of wings (as an appetizer), which we proceeded to devour. I originally ordered a Cajun pasta dish, but was later informed it wasn't available, so I ordered Mama's Cheesesteak to replace it. Our food didn't take long to arrive at our table, and all of our items turned out great. Mom had the Meatloaf Dinner which she liked a lot. She mentioned to the FOH manager that she'd be back, which, considering my mom, is as good a glowing endorsement as one could receive from her. Along with my seal of approval, My Mama's Kitchen will work its way into our restaurant rotation. Mind you, our visit had some hiccups (the aforementioned absence gaps; the weird interaction just to get us seated; lack of awareness to provide necessary items, like silverware, napkins, et al.). But those are things that can be improved and fine-tuned given time and experience. Once they address some (imo) minor concerns, My Mama's Kitchen should thrive at their new location. Their food is still excellent, but as all 'new' establishments go, trial and error and coaching will help smooth everything out. First impressions dining room was beautiful it gives you a calm feeling the service is good but I have to agree with another reviewer the waiting area is a bit confusing with the two desk not knowing where to go to check in now to the food my first choice was sold out (meatloaf) so I got the ribs. They had great flavor however they were not tender falling off the bone I had to use a knife to cut the meat off the bone my greens were amazing and the Mac and cheese is good. Best sweet tea in Norfolk it's true southern sweet tea iykyk.my wife had the chicken tenders and fries she liked it all. Side note fries are amazing also. The restaurant has a warm and inviting brand new renovation that makes you very comfortable. Greeted by Mama, you feel as if you are being invited into her home. The service is a little slow bc of new staff issues but the wait is so worth it, and with a full bar, you can relax with a nice cocktail while you wait. We shared the drip chicken sandwich, ribs, fries, collards and corn bread. The ribs and drip chicken sandwich were the best I ever had hands down, and the corn bread and greens were to die for. In fact, I ordered extra corn bread for my morning coffee. I cannot say enough good things about our experience. This place has good catfish( and big) which is what I usually get. I've also tried their whiting which wasn't horrible it just had no flavor. The catfish meal is $18 and comes with 2 sides and 2 pieces of catfish. So I found this spot the end of May which is when I tried the meal and discovered I really only just liked the fish and started ordering just that. I ordered 2 pieces of catfish on 3 separate occasions after that where my total was 10.12 everytime and I ordered twice where a lady took my order and once when a guy took it and they both gave me a total of $10.12. June 18th comes and I order my regular and go pick it up. June 19th comes and I want it again and call to order and I'm told it's $9 per fish and I'm like what I ordered this yesterday??? 1st I'm told they happened to create an a la carte menu that day as well as it's always been $9 per fish so I'm like if that's the case how did I order 2 pieces of catfish for $10.12 on multiple occasion ??? They ask for a card number and sure enough I give it and a transaction of $10.12 comes up for them from the day prior. The girl on the phone says the chef makes the price and in my mind I'm lost because I'm like if the meal come with 2 sides and 2 pieces of catfish and is $18 and 2 pieces of single fish also equate to $18 then is yall giving sides away for free ??? She says yes smh. WHY does that make sense. If that's the case then when I order 2 pieces of fish that cost the same as the meal then I should be getting sides regardless. That's what you're telling me ? That's what I'm hearing ? I am lost for words at this point. She tells me she will ask the chef to accommodate and he does. He says he will take $1 off. Sir lol. What. No one paid us any attention for the next 20 minutes. We finally got a waitress to take our order. Too bad they were out of 98% of the menu by 7pm. We ordered what they did have. 10 minutes later waitress said they were out of that. They've got meat loaf!!!!! I had wasted an hour of my time. The owner is a total jerk. Had been there laughing it up catering to a group of friends. All of them ate and had leftovers. He said to us , Okay, goodbye. Have a good night. No I'm sorry. Just a nasty attitude. The hostess was the only thing good here. She apologized. I would like to know why we were treated so badly. Never got any food. Just lemon with water. Asked for the lemons multiple times. I've had this place bookmarked forever and was so excited to go! It's a small cute quaint spot and definitely gives you a mom and pop vibe. The staff is helpful and patience as to the questions you may have about the menu. I heard about the wings so that is what the hubs and I knew that we had to get. But ugh...the wings were fried a little too hard and the sauce we had didn't really taste good. I also had the salmon Po boy and it was ok. Unfortunately this place had a not so stellar offering. Order the burger with Thai wings, the burger was sloppily made with old withered shredded lettuce. The wings didn't seem fresh and they were overcooked so it was hard. The wings cannot be considered jumbo as they are small winglets. Its been a while since i ate here so my sis and i went to check them out. They've rearranged the restaurant since last time i was there. We called in an order for the catfish po boy, mac n cheese, fries, and the gouda burger... The food is something thats probably more enjoyable if eaten there... The fish and fries were pretty good while they were hot. It wasn't the same after it cooled down. The fish was seasoned and crispy. It had good flavor. There was no salt on the fries but there was cajun seasoning. I'm not a big fan of natural cut fries, so they weren't my favorite. But still were good. They came out hot and fresh. The mac n cheese had absolutely NO flavor besides cheese. It looked very appealing but definitely didn't taste like anything. I think their spicy mayo sauce is really good. It was good on the burger, fries, and fish. I'm glad i got extra. The gouda burger is a nice portion with all the fixins, but it was under seasoned. I added my own seasoning at home and it made the burger better. They have several things on the menu that I'd like to try. Their hot dogs sound good on the menu with fun toppings. They have a few tables to dine inside, but its not a large restaurant. There's also outdoor seating. Theres also a parking lot out front with about 6-8 spots, but they do fill up pretty quickly. The cashier was very nice. She was extremely busy taking orders, packaging orders, and taking food to tables. But she still found the time to chat with us briefly. I do like this place. My Mama's Kitchen has been a favorite of mine since walking inside years back to try out a chicken and waffles dish once they became open on Saturdays. Time and time again, Sophia and I never had any bad moments here. In 2019, they announced they were closing for renovations, which was no big thing. Plans were for them to reopen the following Spring. But, COVID-19 hit, which pushed things back for all of us. During that time, we were able to check out other places on my Yelp radar. With Sophia celebrating her birthday (and the both of us having an extended weekend), she begged me to take her back. So I thought it would be okay to head back and see how things were going. Once we walked in, we were greeted by Chef Moe and the crew. Immediately, we ordered at the counter. My choice was The Drip chicken sandwich, which was fried chicken dipped in spicy BBQ sauce and topped with cole slaw and pickles served with fresh cut fries. I also ordered salted caramel banana pudding for dessert. I did order the same sandwich before years ago which first came out during the chicken wars right when Popeyes put theirs out and loved it. And just like before, it hit a home run. The crunch of the chicken with sauce spicy enough to burn your lips and make your nose run.....need I say anything else? The fries....taste exactly the same. Seasoned to perfection not needing any condiments. The dessert...not too sweet and delivered on all fronts. Just as good as their strawberry smash dessert. This was truly a nice way to head back here to relive old times and see then thriving. The bad part was I waited too long to make a return. But, better now than never. Drip - best chicken sandwich ever! I generally don't like chicken sandwich because they tend to be dry and bland, but I had to give this a shot since it's a "must try" and ohhhh man! The best! The chicken piece was generous, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The sauce used also also so flavorful. I'm salivating thinking of it now, haha! My husband got the cheese steak fries. I mentioned that I saw it on yelp but it's not on their menu, their chef hooked it up and still made it. Omg, so good! Was going to do a review for another wing place near my home that just didn't satisfy our wing cravings. I found myself constantly comparing it to My Mama's kitchen so I quickly checked to make sure I left a review for this place. Can't believe I didn't. We were so happy to try these wings. The wings are big, delicious and juicy. We love the Gangnam, 5 word and the drip. Try them all though. They also offer specialty hot dogs, po boys, cheese steaks, cat fish fillets and crab cakes. I've heard they offer this amazing strawberry shortcake but each time I come they're out. Literally my favorite wing spot. They do have a small dine in area but there isn't a lot of space. read more

Every damn bite was packed with flavor and love. It's no wonder they call this "My Mama's Kitchen". Location is a bit tucked away.. we missed it at first, but they do have a few parking spots. We came at a non-busy time and chose to sat inside, although they do have outdoor seating, as well. Service was incredible. The woman working the front as well as the chefs were all very friendly and checked in on us multiple times to make sure we were enjoying our meal. We ordered far too much food, but didn't regret a single thing. We got the brisket plate, the catfish po' boy with fries, and the 6 piece wings with their five word sauce, per the recommendation of the sweet gal working the counter. Everything was great. In order, our favorites: Catfish Po' Boy-- OMG GOOD!! Five Word Wings- crispy, flavorful and so unique! Even their blue cheese dressing and ranch were awesome. A hidden gem! It is quietly tucked away in a converted house. Food: They are very generous with their portions. The catfish was amazing! The two fillets was pretty large with some special dipping sauce that was pretty good as well. The side dishes was large as well. Everything I've ever had from My Mama's Kitchen is nothing short of mind blowingly good, but today I'm here to tell you about their classic Buffalo wings. I don't even care about Buffalo wings. I'll eat boneless wings, or occasionally a bone in, but those typically seem like too much work and too much mess for what they are. But THESE WINGS?! My husband ordered some and said he would share a few. I ordered the cheesesteak fries and told him I didn't want any because I had a mountain of fresh cut fries topped with cheesesteak and why would I care about a chicken wing with those in front of me? I was wrong. The classic Buffalo wings looked intriguing... they were not doused in sauce. They had a great color and looked a little crispy. Intriguing enough for me to try. THE FLAVOR. OH MY GOD THE FLAVOR. A little different than what I was expecting but so much more depth than the classic drenched in sauce buffalo wing. They were so meaty, perfectly crisp on the outside. These wings didn't even need to be dipped in anything. I am not lying when I say I've been thinking about them a couple times a week ever since. You need them. We all need them. Anyways. They're doing online ordering through their website now, which is super wonderful!!! We had about a 30 minute wait until pickup during non peak hours, for those wondering. They have a great Covid-times system with a pickup window, and also have a nice little patio open now. We took ours to go and popped over to enjoy the patio at CoVa Brewing. My Mama's kitchen had been on our list for the past 2 years, and we regret not trying it sooner. 2 years of missing out on Hampton Roads' best southern food with a Cajun/creole flair! Tucked away in an unassuming nook near East Beach, you're instantly greeted by the most insanely delicious aroma of soul food-meets-bbq. It's a casual and welcoming environment (order at the counter) but we took out that night. Their menu is extensive and while they're known for their wings, we were in the mood for fried fish and got their catfish platter. The portions are HUGE and each platter could easily be 2 meals. Everything was fresh - the catfish crispy, meaty, and perfectly spiced, while the fries were homemade (highly recommend dipping them in the remoulade served with the fish). Yes. It was my first time coming to My Momma's Kitchen! My sister and I both got the fried catfish po'boy. it was surprisingly well seasoned I can definitely appreciate that. The last place I had fried fish from it tasted like something they would serve in a nursing home . Just fyi I can say that with no shade being thrown, because I use to work in a nursing home and they had many complaints. But back to the topic of My Momma's Kitchen the fries were really good to well seasoned but not salty. I don't remember what kind of burger my sis had gotten that day but it definitely looked like they laid goodness all through that burger. Last but not least the workers are very nice seem laid back real cool people. The waitress/ cashier was sweet very nice. Even though she was busy she still kept conversation until we got our food to go. 5 STAR for sure. It is a unique location. Totally love the service. They are so nice. We were going to order and eat in our car but they have an outdoor seating area. Let's talk about the food. A M A Z I N G and plenty of it. The Mama's Kickin' crab cake sandwich is like nothing I have ever had. BIG thick meaty crab cake with plenty of flavor. Then they surprise you with plenty of tasty shrimp layered with fresh veggies and a kickin' sauce between a perfect bun. If you don't get this sandwich your stupid. So for my birthday my wife said she'd take me to lunch anywhere in Hampton Roads. I saw several restaurants but I happened upon My Mama's Kitchen, so we set off from the peninsula. The restaurant sits in a neighborhood off the beaten path, and most of the parking spots were occupied when we arrived. We saw a pretty healthy traffic of people waiting to order take out. Although the eat in area was small, we decided to dine in. My wife ordered house special sandwich called 'the Drip,' with a side of fries. I ordered the catfish dinner with collard greens and macaroni and cheese. The meals were delivered to our table with two large catfish filets lightly fried in seasoned meal and both of the sides were excellent. The macaroni and cheese was delicious and the collard greens were clean, tender with a delicate sweetness without tasting overly sugary. We were also offered some cornbread that was sweetened, buttery and golden which we devoured and should not be forgotten.The drip sandwich was delicious featured a chicken breast basted a sauce that had sweet heat that will make any chicken sandwich lover place the drip at the top of their list. The fries were as advertised fresh cut, slightly salty and crunchy. I get now why this place has so many stars and so many people ordering their food. I plan to join them and go back soon. read more

Stopped by at 1130am Saturday. Parking lot only has a few spaces and there were only 2 spots open when we got there. Went inside and I knew items I wanted to try from exploring Yelp/IG. After we ordered, we sat and waited for a bit which we didn't mind at all. At least 8-10 people came in right after us. I ordered the 5 word wings, garlic parm wings, shrimp dinner to go (with fries), and The Drip for me. The Drip was so delicious! Not too spicy. Chicken was huge and outside of the bun (no complaints here!). The wings were nice and crispy. I LOVED the 5 word wings. The fries that came with The Drip were delicious. Unfortunately, the fries and mac and cheese that came with the shrimp dinner were not so good. The fries needed to be cooked longer and the mac and cheese just didn't hit like everything else. Overall I will definitely be back. I would give 4.5 stars if I could. I loved everything except the second fries (no pic since they came later and I was hungry) and mac and cheese. I've been to My Mama's Kitchen a couple of times a few years ago and really enjoyed their Chicken & Waffles. What put them back on my radar is when they introduced their "Drip" Chicken Sandwich onto their menu during the height of the "Popeyes Vs. Chich-Fil-A" chicken sandwich craze. I will tell you that they undoubtedly have the best chicken sandwich in Hampton Roads hands down. Whew, Chile! The way that perfectly fried slab of meat sits on top of that soft bun with the fresh Asian slaw and "drip sauce" will have you sitting RIGHT every time, do you hear me!? I'm also a fan of their thick-cut fries and chicken wings. Just Marvelous! I suggest calling in your order before coming because everything is made to order. Passing through Norfolk on the way home from a vacation, we found My Mama's Kitchen online and decided to check it out. We drove right past it at first, but so glad we circled back. We were excited for the brisket, which was sold out by lunch time, so instead our group tried the drip chicken sandwich, mango habanero wings, honey bbq wings, and a pulled pork sandwich. This is my new spot for really good food! The Surf and Turf Cheesesteak was seasoned to perfection with medium size grilled shrimp on top. YES shrimp, on top. I know you had to think about that for a minute. Get this sandwich and some wings too! The wings were fresh, seasoned and DELICIOUS! It tasted like a little smoke on them, but all I know is it was so tasty! You can't go wrong with these. The house, hand cut fries were the best! Seasoned, hot and made to order. They have an outdoor and indoor eating area. Staff are welcoming and friendly. I plan to go back this week. At this point, I just want to sit down and relax after this good meal. Highly recommended! Highly recommend. Got the old bay, the drip, and 5 word for choices of wing flavors. The 5 word was amazing mix of lemon pepper, teriyaki, and garlic. Each wing of the 5 word kind of gives you a different flavor but keeps you coming back from more (definitely my favorite). For sides we did the fries and cornbread -- both amazing. Fries were perfect and cornbread also great, kinda like cake but not too sweet. Lastly, got the salted caramel banana pudding because why not. Loved it, definitely a place to go out of the way for!! I hesitate to write this review, as it's already a challenge to find parking and a spot at this treasured little neighborhood spot. However, their wings deserve to be shared. They are quite simply the best chicken wings I've ever had. They are fried to crispy perfection and aggressively seasoned to a sublime level. The my mommas wings are great and need no additional sauce. However, they offer a variety of creative and tasty sauces that enhance their wonderful wings. I particularly enjoy the buffalo soldier sauce, which is a fusion of jerk and traditional buffalo wing sauce. Put it in the GPS if you don't kow the neighborhood, it's on a little cut through street that cuts the corner from Ocean View Ave to Little Creek. EAT HERE NOW. Rare & special gem! It's one thing to have terrific food - it's quite another to have terrific food and terrific people operating a small, family-owned business. The folks who run this gem are so sweet and really took their time to tell us newbies what was good (PS: EVERYTHING). The fries are low-key magic! Get that Remi sauce. Also magic. The Drip? Criminally good: a knock out, messy, ten napkin wonder. I got one crab cake as a side to try. I did not share this with anyone because it was gone too fast. The wings were beyond fresh and that magic crispy/juicy combo that defies logic. Food was delicious. They also serve jumbo shrimp with their meals, nothing skimpy! It is very small, so feels a bit tight and parking is a pain. However, our waitress was so friendly; it was my first time and you would have thought i was a regular by how friendly she was. She also shared they are getting a new location, which I'm looking forward to visit. Only reason i gave 4 stars is because i hate not having easy access to parking, so if that's not huge for you, it's definitely a 5 star! read more
