    Fried green tomatoes
    Shana C.

Visited for brunch on Father's Day and arrived around 11:45 AM with no wait. One thing that could use some improvement is the check-in process. When you walk in, there's a desk immediately to the left, another larger one farther back, and a waiting area in between. Since there wasn't a host present, it wasn't immediately clear where we were supposed to go. Eventually, a little boy came out and led us to our table, which was honestly pretty adorable. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant has a very cute aesthetic, and the seating was comfortable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There were a few cleanliness issues, though. Both of our chairs had crumbs in them, and there was also something on the salt shaker that probably should have been cleaned off.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Neither issue was a dealbreaker for me, but it's the kind of thing that can leave a less-than-great first impression. For brunch, I ordered a Bellini, fried green tomatoes, and the New Orleans French Toast. The Bellini was fine, but the food was where this place really shined. The fried green tomatoes were delicious--clearly hand-cut and freshly fried, not those frozen, perfectly uniform slices you sometimes get elsewhere. The New Orleans French Toast may have been the best French toast I've ever had. Even without syrup, it was absolutely delicious. Our server, Heidi, seemed relatively new to serving, but she was friendly, checked on us appropriately, and made sure we had what we needed. The food also came out quickly, which was appreciated. I'll absolutely be back. I know this location recently opened, and they're probably still working through a few growing pains. But at the end of the day, I came for the food, and the food was excellent. That's what will bring me back.

The food was plenty and very tasty. I had the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer, Red Beans and Rice with Abdullah Sausage and a refreshing glass of water with a slice of lemon. The Service was unique in its own way for the servers were very friendly and very attentive. The ambience of "My Mama's Kitchen" surprised me when I walked into the building. It's very beautiful, the furniture, the wall coverings and the bar are all very unique.

Meatloaf Dinner. It's fantastic to witness the return of My Mama's Kitchen!

It's been roughly 2 years since we've heard anything from My Mama's Kitchen. They closed their Shore Dr location in order to move to a bigger venue on Little Creek Rd. I'm sure many figured they'd be up and running again in a few months, but this move took much longer as they opted to remodel and rebuild their new location on their own. Well, My Mama's Kitchen finally opened the doors to their new location just before Mother's Day. I told my mom about them, so we tried them out on the afternoon of 5/20/26. Located across the street from Wedgewood Plaza (i.e. The Banque is in Wedgewood Plaza), off the bat there is much more available parking. [[HIGHLIGHT]]And once we walked inside, you can witness how spacious Kitchen is compared to their old location. The venue looked good and you can tell plenty of work was put in towards remodeling.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We waited a little bit to be seated - there wasn't a host there to initially greet us. An employee came out, saw us and proceeded to seat us, although it was a little weird she handed us their menu before we got to the table. I was a little confused because she asked us if we were dining in. Right after we replied, "Yes," she continued to give us the menu, then casually motioned for us to follow her to the dining area. We were sat and immediately greeted by a server who kinda helped guide us to our table. Our server was quiet, but nice, and there were stretches where she was absent. She was pretty good about refills and was all smiles during our visit. The absences were interesting, but there was another employee who helped us during the gaps. I talked to her as we were leaving and she told me she came over from The Stockpot. She mentioned she helped curate the menu and, at the time we were originally seated, she was bartending. She was clearly a FOH manager of sorts - on top of things and super nice. I'd return simply based on our interaction with her. Pivoting to the food - Kitchen's food was just as good as I remembered. Mom and I split an order of wings (as an appetizer), which we proceeded to devour. I originally ordered a Cajun pasta dish, but was later informed it wasn't available, so I ordered Mama's Cheesesteak to replace it. Our food didn't take long to arrive at our table, and all of our items turned out great. Mom had the Meatloaf Dinner which she liked a lot. She mentioned to the FOH manager that she'd be back, which, considering my mom, is as good a glowing endorsement as one could receive from her. Along with my seal of approval, My Mama's Kitchen will work its way into our restaurant rotation. Mind you, our visit had some hiccups (the aforementioned absence gaps; the weird interaction just to get us seated; lack of awareness to provide necessary items, like silverware, napkins, et al.). But those are things that can be improved and fine-tuned given time and experience. Once they address some (imo) minor concerns, My Mama's Kitchen should thrive at their new location. Their food is still excellent, but as all 'new' establishments go, trial and error and coaching will help smooth everything out. Otherwise, I'm happy with our initial visit to their new location and look forward to many future visits. Thank you, My Mama's Kitchen! JV

Tried My Mama's Kitchen for brunch, and we were NOT disappointed! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is SO cute. I love the decor and colors chosen. It's cute for a date, a celebration, or just a day out with friends or family.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] While we were able to be seated immediately, it did take a little bit for our server to come to us. Heidi was our waitress, and she was nice. She did seem a bit flustered though. Not sure if maybe she is new. We had the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer, and I had the blueberry lemon ricotta pancakes with eggs and bacon. The only other fried green tomatoes I've had were at Tupelo Honey, and while those are good, you can tell they're a frozen dish they just fry really quickly. These tasted homemade today, and the remoulade sauce they're served with is really good! The pancakes were excellent; they didn't even need syrup. I like that they use shell eggs and not those egg beaters. Everything came out quick and fresh! I have zero complaints about the food. I will definitely be back again for brunch and to try their dinner menu!

Stopped in shortly before 1800hrs for dinner tonight. There was a sign on the door stating that they would be closed at 1700hrs for 1 hour. At 1800hrs the door was still locked and I was informed that the doors would open in 15 minutes. At 1820hrs the door was still locked. Myself and the rest of the patrons were finally let in shortly thereafter. When we were finally seated and ready to order I was informed that they were out of my top two choices (ribs or brisket). They were also out of meatloaf and baked chicken. I settled on the cheesesteak. Not what I wanted but it was good. Actually, it was really good but not what I came in for. Almost forgot to mention that the sides came in paper throw away cups. Also noticed that two ladies ordered what looked like banana pudding and their desserts were also in a plastic cup. The best part of the visit was Lydia. She is the bartender and was also our server. Lydia was absolutely wonderful. We all noticed how she stayed constantly busy and had a continuous smile on her face. My Mamas Kitchen that young lady needs a raise. Lydia is hands down MMK's best asset. Don't know if you will see this Lydia but you are the main reason we will be giving MMK another try. All in all I might try them one more time. It was disappointing to not be able to order either of the two dishes I wanted but the staff was very kind.

Our first time trying their food using the "Too Good To Go" app. The restaurant popped up. I said to myself, "Self, we need to try this place since Charmayne talked about how good the food is." And of course myself clicked to reserve 2 meals. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside it's a comfortable and causal setting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The lady at the desk was friendly. Patiently waiting and hoping we get the really good stuff that is popular. I can smell the cooking happening. The food comes out, and we were pleasantly surprised it was shrimp! They gave us, shrimp, cooked cabbage, Mac n cheese, homemade mashed potatoes. Two meals with 2 sides each. Very well seasoned for everything. Savory! We recommend My Mama's kitchen for sure! Especially I watched their story on 13Newsnow, I said we definitely have a match for good food! We picked up our dinner and enjoying it at home. We will be back! A+

[[HIGHLIGHT]]New gorgeous digs, same great MMK flavor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] $17 Drip sandwich remains among my favorite hot chicken sandwiches in the world. Good food is worth the wait, so call ahead an order in advance if you're pressed for time. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Plenty of comfy, contemporary space to relax and wait now, not to mention dine-in area and full service bar.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Welcome back MMK, we missed you.

I was a regular at the previous location and [[HIGHLIGHT]]this new location is immaculate.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food was exceptionally delicious just like I remembered. Those Jerk wings and fried catfish were my two favorites. Service was also spectacular as well and I'll definitely be back.

Food is great. Story is even better. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Love what they have done with the old day care to make it a restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The servers are still learning as they are all old students of the day care that they brought on as stafff. Everything so good.

Amazing food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance is so relaxing, warm and inviting[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] and the service is excellent

    Outside Entrance

Heard really great things about the owner. Checked out Facebook. So we went. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Place is beautiful inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They had us waiting in a waiting area for 20 minutes. Finally sat us. No one paid us any attention for the next 20 minutes. We finally got a waitress to take our order. Too bad they were out of 98% of the menu by 7pm. We ordered what they did have. 10 minutes later waitress said they were out of that. They've got meat loaf!!!!! I had wasted an hour of my time. The owner is a total jerk. Had been there laughing it up catering to a group of friends. All of them ate and had leftovers. He said to us , Okay, goodbye. Have a good night. No I'm sorry. Just a nasty attitude. The hostess was the only thing good here. She apologized. I would like to know why we were treated so badly. Never got any food. Just lemon with water. Asked for the lemons multiple times. Just to horrible experience. The owner is awful. Don't need to watch any more videos or see how much it took to get here. Karma is real. I saw you for myself. Will never ask you to feed me ir mine again.

Stopped by for a burger and a beer to drown in my solitude. Had great service. Prompt, attentive and genuine. Only downside was some pretentious guy named Jeff kept whining about the hostess and the service being "special needs" because he couldn't get his group prompt service under 15 minutes on a special holiday. If it wasn't for some derogative guy whining off the bell about how the service wasn't up to par every couple minutes I'd have enjoyed what would've been quite a depressing day for me. Other than that, burger was damn heavenly. Beer was cold and good. Service was grand. Some people just ruin it for others. Great spot, great burger, good beer and good folks. B.W.

The last time I set foot inside their Pleasure House Rd location was at least 10 years ago. I celebrated my birthday there as my friends were kind enough to take me out. It was a Sunday morning and I sought out a place that offered brunch. I noticed 1608 was open and decided to head over, especially since I haven't visited them in ages. When I walked in, I noticed their dining room is dimly lit - much darker than I remember. I was greeted immediately by a kind hostess and she proceeded to sit me at a nearby table and provided me with menus (one food, one alcohol). I took my time looking over the food menu, and in the meantime I ordered a pint of Center of the Universe's Bald Irishman and a bottle of Boylan's Black Cherry soda (they do not have a soda fountain). What made this visit memorable was that 1608's bartender, Hunter, was an old acquaintance from back in my restaurant days. He spotted me and came over to say hi. After my meal, I continued to catch up with him at the bar. His presence made a pleasant experience even more fantastic. I thought I was hungry, so I ordered 2 dishes - Smoked Ham Fried Rice and the Breakfast Burrito. According to Hunter, every item is made fresh in house. After biting into each, you could tell that's true. Both the fried rice and burrito were delicious and boasted lots of flavor. Although I prefer my fried rice a bit simpler (if you give me just garlic fried rice, I am SET), 1608's fried rice (veggies, garlic, soy, basmati rice, 2 runny eggs, smoked ham) had a lot going on, which made for a flavorful dish. I liked the rice and the burrito (Korean style fried chicken breast, scrambled eggs, cilantro lime, cheddar, pico de gallo) a lot. I didn't finish either because it was a lot of food (I really thought I was hungry, haha). But these leftovers turned into a fantastic dinner later on. 1608 looked clean and organized, although I thought it was a little too dark inside, at least for brunch service. That's not a dealbreaker since everything from the food to the service was as excellent as I remember. I hope to return soon with my mom. Regardless, I'll find my way back eventually. Thank you, 1608 Crafthouse! And great seeing you again, Hunter! JV

It has been nearly three weeks; I can stop thinking about No Frill Bar and Grill…read more I'm a military spouse, so I know my time in Hampton Roads is coming to an end soon. I visited a Hampton Roads Restaurant group on FB and asked if someone was visiting from out of town: What is your go-to place to take them? Out of 90+ comments, No Frill Bar and Grill was mentioned the most - six times! So when I finally had a day off and some other business to tend to in Norfolk, it was the perfect excuse to finally try them. No Frill Bar and Grill has been open for nearly 30 years by Jerry Meltsner. Jerry's nephew Jon Kliner helps co-own and manage operations. It originally opened on Tidewater Drive, but the space didn't allow for much growth - 10 years later, he moved to a location off Colley Avenue and Spotswood Avenue. Growth continued, moving from counter service to table service. The second location, at 1620 Laskin Road in Virginia Beach, opened in 2005. The restaurant's longevity stems from quality, consistency, price, service, and staff who genuinely care about the business and serving the community. I asked the server for her opinion on two options - Salmon, Shrimp and grits won. The dish was incredible: lightly blackened salmon, for once blackened food that doesn't just taste like salt. I don't dine with the swine, so I asked for no andouille sausage. The sautéed shrimp, caramelized onions, tomatoes, and spinach simmered in Norfolk Canyon ale sauce over cheesy grits and Boursin lavash cracker. The cheesy grits were smooth, and the Boursin lavash cracker was a nice touch. The Boursin added extra creaminess to the meal. The cracker wasn't really a cracker - more like little toasted bread. After this first meal, I know two things for sure: 1. I definitely understand why it is such a local favorite, and 2. I will be back.

I chose the Becca Burger, without mushrooms and their Steak Diablo Fries. They make everything fresh, to order with fresh ingredients. The burger was clearly freshly hand-packed, the jalapeños were freshly sliced, not pickled. Since they make it all fresh, you might wait a few minutes longer than the typical burger joint, but that's fine considering the amazing eats you're about to enjoy. My burger came out looking beautiful and it was definitely sitting tall! The flavor was excellent! Meat was great too!! I definitely liked having their chipotle mayo on it!! Those steak Diablo fries were incredibly tasty, with a nice kick, but sooo much more flavor than heat! The fries themselves were great, perfectly crispy and tasty, but adding all those toppings truly made it special! Service was nice... I had a few questions and she was helpful with the answers. Though there weren't many people in the restaurant at all, the kitchen was really backed up and it took a long time for our food to come out. This didn't make sense at all honestly, so I'm not sure what the issue was. Didn't get to snap a picture, but they had a decent little amount of arcade games inside, which was pretty cool; wasn't expecting to see those in there. Also one of the dessert items I wanted to try: the salted caramel brownie, was out of stock, so I did have to change my dessert choice; unfortunately. To drink: I got the Watermelon Limeade (8.5/10) it was easy to drink, honestly just tasted like a fruity soda with a very tiny buzz to it. I would've liked it a bit more if it was a little stronger. Also tried the Dirty Berry Mojito (10/10) I absolutely loved the flavor of this Mojito and it was a lot stronger than the limeade. Def had a buzz after finishing it. After I was done, felt like I should've really just ordered two of the mojitos only. To eat: I got half Strawbenero BBQ (9/10) and half Spicy Garlic Ranch (6.5/10) boneless wings. The strawberry-habanero mix wings were really different and unique. When I first bit into them, I tasted the strawberry glaze and after a few more chews, that's when the spice settled in. I think it was different and actually pretty good. As for the spicy garlic ranch wings, I feel like they really tasted like regular buffalo sauce wings. I'm not sure if the kitchen mixed up what flavors I ordered, but they def tasted like regular buffalo and not anything garlicky or ranch flavor. Also did a side order of the loaded tots (2/10) the tots were cooked nice and crispy, but the loaded toppings had absolutely no flavor. There was chilli and cheese and after even giving the chilli a taste by itself, there was truly no seasoning in it at all. I wouldn't order this again. Also got dessert: the Cracker Jack Cheesecake (10/10) cheesecake is my favorite dessert, and I love the toppings of caramel and toffee; pretty sure it was supposed to have a chocolate drizzle on it, but the caramel was really good so no complaints. I totally see myself going back again, their hotdogs on the menu looked really really good and I would like to try some more of their unique wing flavors. My overall rate of experience : 7.7/10

It was challenging to find parking but thankfully, we were able to find a spot right in the front. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and were seated right away. With it being lunch time, we assumed we would be able to grab some lunch but to our surprise, they were serving brunch and we were only able to order off the brunch menu. We were slightly confused and definitely didn't have taste for breakfast items so we had to choose from a small selection of non-breakfast items. We started with Palomas. The drink menu only included the drink prices for Happy Hour, and it definitely wasn't Happy Hour, so we weren't sure how much the drinks were. The server mentioned one price, then came back and told us another price but either way, all that would've been eliminated if the prices were on the menu. After looking over the brunch menu, my friend didn't see anything appetizing so she asked if they could make a BLT Sandwich, which wasn't on the menu, and they agreed. I decided on the Crab Cake Sandwich. The food was served in decent time. My friend had an end piece of tomato on her sandwich, which was disappointing. Our server took her sweet time checking on us so and we literally had to flag down another server just to get ketchup. My sandwich didn't even come with remoulade sauce that was supposed to be added. I did enjoy my sandwich though, it was very tasty. I also ordered the Bourbon Glaze Wings 'to-go' and they were delicious. From not being able to order from a lunch menu, to our server not being attentive at all, our experience wasn't that great. We also had to battle flies the entire time we were there, and we were sitting inside so that was a bit frustrating. The restaurant is located right by the Marina and it has great views but the service left a lot to be desired. I may return for dinner in hopes of a better experience but it probably won't be any time soon.

Hangry Joe's, this is the last time you will disappoint me. Where to start? The first two times I…read morestopped in for food was a great experience. Food was good and the service was great. I will say that their medium is way to Spivey for me, but I knew going forward to get the mild which is also spicy. On this particular visit I was fantastically disappointed. So, I ordered a two piece and a drink. I asked what pieces of the chicken come with a two piece the young man behind the counter stated a leg and thigh. He even went to the wall that lists what pieces you can expect to receive to confirm. I said that was fine as I don't care for chicken breast at all, never have and I never will. I paid and then he said that it would be 20-25 minutes. No problem as I am happy to wait for fresh fried chicken. No please keep in mind that they were not busy at all. They had zero customers when I walked in, two first responders came in after me and there was no else who came in afterwards. Please help me understand why this young man brought me a tray with a wing and a breast.. I took the greasy tray back up to him and politely asked what was on my tray. He told me. I then asked him what he told me came with the 2 piece. He repeated a leg and a thigh. Then why would he bring me a breast and a wing? I told him that I would like a refund. He stated that they could remake it. I said "No thank you, I'm not going to wait another 20-25 minutes and I would like a refund". This poor kid then stated that he would have to call his manager. Fine. Call them. Why would the manager need to be called? I didn't get what I ordered and paid for and I didn't eat the food. Over the phone the manager inquired if I would prefer for the food to be remade or if I would like a refund. Sir, I have already asked for a refund. Will most certainly not be returning. There are way too many fried chicken restaurants in this area. If chicken is your thing then maybe do it right. Also, I failed to mention that they now do seafood boils. Not sure I would try it. If you can't get your chicken orders right how are you going to get your seafood boils right? No thank you.

This location seems to be recently renovated, it looks modern! I ordered their sandwich combo with…read moreno heat. I can handle heat but wanted to see what the chicken and breading itself tasted like. The chicken was good, but while it was breaded, it didn't seem like it was deep fried (maybe pan fried?). The chicken wasn't super crispy, but the filet was MASSIVE. The sandwich as a whole was good though! It comes with pickles, coleslaw, and their signature sauce. The fries are waffle fries and are crispy and taste good. I would come here again, but it wouldn't be my first pick for a chicken sandwich. If you're familiar with other Nashville hot chicken places, this isn't on the same level as even Fry The Coop.
