This was NOT my 1st time experiencing this phenomenal business, and I will shout from the mountain tops for all who will listen. Tonight was #Datenight. My wife, another power couple (family, not blood related), and myself. Since the 1st time we introduced them to this place, they've been #hooked. Upon entering, we were greeted by the hostess. We noticed Brie (one of the owners) and we had a conversation (expressing our fondness of the business. We waited about 5 minutes and was escorted to our seats by Brie. We were seated in VIP (Reserved) section Thursday nights are reserved for Karaoke and its was phenomenal, to say the least!! There were some real "singers" in there--not professional, but singers nonetheless. Make sure to come between 6-9 to enjoy their "Happy hour" specials. Drinks came fast. Appetizers came faster. And the food was not far behind. My wife ordered "Keishia Wings (Parmesean Garlic) and fries basket. My sister ordered some kind of dip, and my brother ordered wings. The main course. I ordered "Bad Gyrl Lamb Chops" with Rice & Gravy and Cabbage. My wife ordered the "Veggie Platter" with Collards, Sweet potatoes, Broccoli and Cabbage. My sister ordered The "Sausage, Rice and Onions" platter and my brother ordered the Turkey Wings (Fried then gravy added (no onions), Mac and Cheese and Cabbage. When I say we cleaned our plates, that's an understatement. If you're in the area, visiting the area, or just looking for something outside of the normal, this is it!!! We visited Boss Queen for the first time and had an amazing experience! Our server, Destinee, provided outstanding customer service--she was professional, attentive, and helped make our first visit memorable. Now the food... we ended up sitting for almost two hours because we kept trying different dishes, and every single one was delicious. The fried lamb chops were bussin', the seafood fries were flavorful and filling, and the salmon bites literally melted in my mouth. The seafood mac topped with fried catfish (with fried salmon on the side) had my picky child dancing and humming--so that tells you everything! Boss Queens Soul Cafe exceeded our expectations in every way! We hosted two birthday celebrations--one for my daughter turning 19 and one for my nephew turning 18--and from start to finish, Ms. Tenille made the entire experience absolutely phenomenal. We originally had an earlier reservation time, but needed to push it back an hour to better accommodate both families. Ms. Tenille was beyond gracious and accommodating throughout the entire process--from the initial reservation call, to checking back in earlier in the week for our final headcount, all the way through the night of the event. Her professionalism, kindness, and attention to detail truly stood out. Between my party of 23, my nephew's party of 18, and another large group in the same area, the restaurant was busy--yet you would never know it by the level of service we received. The staff was AMAZING: attentive, efficient, and friendly. We were even able to place food and drink orders from the Happy Hour Menu just 15 minutes before cutoff, and not only did everything come out in a timely manner--it came out HOT. Not warm. HOT and delicious! That alone deserves applause. To top it all off, the DJ kept the energy up all night, creating the perfect vibe for celebration. The atmosphere, the food, the music, and the service all came together flawlessly. We stayed until right before closing, and I can confidently say this won't be our last visit. Came for dinner. There was a DJ but it wasn't too crowded yet since it was still early for a Friday night. I got the fried turkey wing dinner. The wing was flavored perfectly as usually and super tender. The cabbage with beef sausage, which is my favorite side item was great!! Seasoned well and not over cooked. The macaroni and cheese was good too. Cheesy without being dry. My husband got chicken wings and fries, which he really enjoyed too. Sometimes it can be a bit or miss. Went here Sunday after church around 12:30 pm. No wait time and the restaurant was not busy at all. I came here hoping my experience would be better than the last, but that was not the case at all. I ordered from their apparent "new" brunch menu and was excited because the options all sounded delicious. My excitement quickly went away from the wait time for our food, which was ridiculous (0/10) especially when the restaurant wasn't busy at all. There was also inconsistency among the presentation of food on each plate brought to the table. I first asked for a mock tail, the Burner (8/10) it was refreshing and I wanted to enjoy it, but the drinks were brought out so quick and our food took 35-40 minutes... For food, I asked for their Loaded brioche French toast (3/10), the menu stated "sweet cream filling" as if the French toast would be stuffed with the cream inside; however, what I was given was thick slices of dry bread, overly smothered in strawberries, with the tiniest amount of cream thrown on top! No "filling" in the bread, at all. Bacon (8/10), Grits (9/10), Scrambled Eggs with cheese (4/10) very bland, and Potatoes (2/10) basic, bland, and unseasoned. Additionally, I found out after an order needed to be redone at my table, that my potatoes were actually supposed to come with seasoning and peppers. My soror who came to brunch with me, had to give her food back after the long wait since her order was not correct at all. What followed, was the manager coming to our table, with what seemed like a bit of an attitude, trying to find out how exactly the order was wrong. While explaining that the French toast didn't match the description of the menu, a simple conversation about the menu wording and food outcome/presentation turned into a partial over explaining and back and forth, with the staff almost refusing to accept that what was given to us simply didn't match the menu description. After having the waitress and manager come to the table multiple times and after another long wait for food, my Sorors food arrived with an amazing presentation (I should've taken a picture of it). Definitely not how my food, my sisters food, or my sorors original plate of food looked at all. Inconsistency is a major issue here as well as communication. There's no reason going back and forth, doing any over explanation, or having to send your food back to be remade should THEN lead to you receiving well prepared/presented food here in this restaurant. The manager explained that the slow service and food presentation was because everyone in the kitchen was being "trained" and the brunch menu was still "new." To me, this didn't make sense when this restaurant is not new; the explanation/excuse used just didn't add up. Think I've given enough chances to this restaurant at this point. I've been here some other times and didn't do reviews for those experiences, because they weren't great, but they also weren't terrible, but this recent experience has sealed the deal for me on not coming back; very unfortunate. The waitress mentioned she would fix our bills to accommodate for the experience we had and while paying, I noticed that the only thing really removed from each bill was basically the tax total. We placed an online order at Boss Queen Soul Food Cafe and tried a variety of dishes. The "Have 'Em All" egg roll sampler, beef liver with onions and gravy, mashed potatoes with gravy, collard greens, turkey chops, and cabbage. The eggroll sampler was a different mix of flavors. The salmon was cooked nicely, not overdone, and the Philly was decent. The beef liver was overcooked and a bit tough. Not sure about the gravy. The mashed potatoes were okay, and the collard greens were just alright. I actually preferred the cabbage, which had more flavor and a better texture. The highlight of the meal was definitely the turkey chops tender, juicy, and well-seasoned. Overall, the food had its ups and downs. The next day, I did a To-Go order online they told me it was going to be 20 minutes for salmon bites. That's it! Just an appetizer. I waited 10 more minutes before going in to pick up, meaning instead of 20 minutes I waited 30 minutes. Got there and the food was not ready!! Waited another 20 minutes, still not ready. Asked the lady at the counter what was the hold up. She checked and said they need to replace the cooking grease. This is too much! Such bad service, won't be trying again! read more

The atmosphere felt more like a nightclub than a restaurant--dim lighting, a live DJ (possibly for a private party), and music so loud it was hard to hear our waitress, let alone have a conversation. Service was slow from the start. We waited 25 minutes in line (with just one person ahead of us) before being acknowledged, then were told to wait even longer. Once seated, we placed our drink and food orders right away. Drinks came after 10 minutes, but 10 minutes after that we were told the baked chicken was sold out--20 minutes after ordering. We switched to steak. The shrimp & grits came first--shrimp was great, but the grits were watery and flavorless. We sent them back, and while the waitress mentioned a "re-plating fee" for changing the order, she agreed to make fresh grits instead. The steak arrived an hour and a half into our visit--absolutely delicious, tender, and full of flavor. The replacement grits were much better too, though the shrimp portion was smaller. Drinks were tasty and strong, but note that a 20% gratuity is automatically added to all dine-in checks. Overall, the food was solid, but the loud club vibe, long delays, and lack of acknowledgment at the start turned this into a disappointing dining experience. I dined in yesterday for lunch and was delighted to come here. The booths need to be upgraded because it was a tight fit for my friend and I. Server was super nice and attentive. I started off with the seafood empanadas and they were absolutely amazing but does need more filling because it is mostly pasty. Great flavor and not over fried. My main was the seafood Alfredo with scallops shrimp and crab meat. This dish has the potential to be way better than what I received. The pasta was on the verge of being over boiled and it's best to cook pasta al dente. The sauce was bland and watery and I had to ask for extra seasoning to save it. The selection of fresh seafood is what makes the dish worth getting. The recipe just needs some work to execute a customer's satisfaction. Chef needs to taste their dishes as they go to avoid loss of revenue and cook like they would like their own food at home. I think the menu should be shorter so that the kitchen doesn't get so overwhelmed and they can pay more attention to these details. The table was very clean but heavy Clorox smell and remnants from the layer of wetness on the seat and table. First let me say the food here is EXCELLENT. Great Atmosphere and service. There is a 3% surcharge if you use a credit card to pay and that is posted on the window outside before you walk in. The thing I don't like and I find VERY DECEPTIVE is the fact that they add a 20% gratuity to All bills without telling you. When they give you the device to pay, it's on the last page showing the total price so unless you have done the math in your head ahead of time, you think that the extra cash money you giving for a tip is the only gratuity you are paying. But in actuality you are double tipping and not realizing it. They should be required to tell you the gratuity is already added. read more

I am a strong advocate for supporting Black-owned businesses, but there is absolutely no excuse for the lack of basic customer service and care I experienced. We have to do better. I live in San Diego and only came to Virginia for training. Unfortunately, my previous dining experiences here were disappointing. When my flight was rescheduled, I decided to give it one last shot before leaving. A friend recommended this place, so we went. The seating arrangements were decent, and shortly after sitting down, a woman named Turks introduced herself as our server--though she initially claimed to be the manager. I asked for the salmon bites and the crab cake, which Turks recommended, saying it was her own recipe. My friend ordered wings and fries, and Turks suggested a signature dish that included fish, shrimp, corn on the cob, broccoli, and a crab cake. The appetizers arrived, and while the salmon bites weren't bad, the first bite of the crab cake was off it was wet inside, like it hadn't been properly fried. We immediately informed Turks, and her response? "I'll let the manager know," even though she originally claimed to be the manager. That was the first red flag. When the main dishes arrived, I had a couple of shrimp and some broccoli and within moments, I became violently ill. I had to rush outside and barely made it three shops down before throwing up into a dumpster. I have never experienced food poisoning before, but this was terrifying. My friend ran after me to check on me and informed the staff what was happening. And this is where my outrage reaches its peak not a single employee, not even the so-called "manager" Turks, came outside to check on me. Not one. The complete disregard for my well-being was appalling. After regaining myself, I went back inside to ask for the check. The front desk employee informed the manager what had happened and that we wanted to pay and leave the rest of the food. Instead of showing even the slightest concern, the manager grabbed the food, took it to the back, and charged me the full $98.15 without hesitation. I paid without question, but the lack of human decency here is absolutely disgraceful. This experience was beyond disappointing it was infuriating. Supporting Black-owned businesses should not mean accepting subpar service, lack of accountability, and outright neglect. And yet, situations like this are exactly why some of these businesses struggle to survive. You're all about making money? Fine. But at any cost? I could have collapsed right outside, and not a single person in that establishment would have cared. I am a stranger in Virginia, but hospitality should be universal. I didn't partake in the food because my wife has celiac disease, but best believe I'll be back. We lucked up on their reverse happy hour from 6p-9p (Tuesday-Thursday), we got a margarita and Long Island for $6 a piece they were well made. Service was quick and everyone was polite! The vibe in here is everything I need in a soul food spot, great music and all. Now food, I got the fried catfish with mac and candied yams with a corn bread. Everything was good on my plate and I would order it again. So far this is the best soul food I've had in VA! I am very impressed with the progress this establishment has made over the years. They are in a new location and it is amazing. The food is still amazing the service is friendly, the drinks are strong and the music is always hitting. Absolutely everything on the menu is delicious even the desserts. At first entry the place looks like an adult lounge but we have dined in enough times with young kids and they have always had a great time. I've given this spot more than one chance. Like any restaurant, some dishes are hits and others are misses. The first time I went, I had the smothered pork chops and definitely enjoyed them. On another visit, I tried the Fly Girl Seafood fries -- while the seafood was fresh, it was an overbearing fresh taste as if it'd just came out the water and then there was an odd aftertaste that threw the dish off for me. I came back a couple more times for takeout, and unfortunately, my last visit wasn't about the food but the service. On two different occasions, the same woman who works the front took constructive feedback very personally and responded with attitude. On top of that, takeout wait times are extremely long -- I once waited 45 minutes to an hour for two sides of string beans, two sides of potato salad, and a slice of sweet potato pie. On my final visit, I went with my mother to order just two sides of string beans. The woman at the counter seemed more focused on charging her phone than acknowledging us. A younger girl stepped up, noticed us waiting, and immediately helped. When my mom later asked how long the wait would be, the first woman brushed her off with "not that long" and went back to her phone. The younger girl, on the other hand, was professional, polite, and proactive. She said, "All you got is the string beans, so it shouldn't be too long. Matter of fact, let me go grab them right now since that's all you got." And she did. People often criticize Gen Z, but that young girl outperformed her Millennial/Gen X coworker, who was dismissive and uninterested in helping. If this is your business or your place of work, act like you want to be there and like your customers matter. Ordered the bake potato loaded with sausage and shrimp, and it came flooded with cheese and the potato was not even hot. It was so much cheese that you couldn't even enjoy the bake potato or the added sausage and shrimp. I didn't even eat it maybe one bite. However, when i told the waiter that i couldn't eat it because of all the cheese she informed me that she had to let the manager know before she could change it out. She came back and told me that if i wanted to change it out and order something else that i would have to pay for the other order plus a 20% restocking fee for the food that i didn't eat. As you probably can tell i was confused as to why i had to pay for food that i didn't eat and where were they going to restock it? So all i did was pay the restocking fee and left the restaurant. I have never been to any restaurant and had to pay a restocking fee for food that they were just going to throw away anyways. Ok so Brit and I tried this place on a whim since we were in the area. They had a long takeout line that seemed like there wasn't much order. The phones were constantly ringing off the hook and no one picked up. which was annoying because the takeout area was in the middle of the restaurant, so we had to hear constant ringing the whole time we dined in. Our server was also the bartender and he actually sucked. He had an attitude the whole time he served me. Apparently, I took too lo to order and he made a smart remark. And when my food came, I asked for tartar sauce and he said "you couldn't ask for that beforehand"... like you're getting paid! Customer service is part of your job. Apparently on Sunday they have a special menu, but it only includes 1 veggie (which of course they were out of).... So we pretty much had starches and fried fish. I will say that my fried catfish and crab cakes were perfectly seasoned and the Mac and cheese was yummy. The fried onion rings were an afterthought because they were out of veggies. I wouldn't dine in again and if I'm in the area I'd possibly try to order take out, if they answer the phone. read more
