I was craving some soul food and came across this spot. There's plenty of seating if you want to dine in, and it looks like the space doubles as a lounge as well. I asked what the go-to dish was, and they recommended the turkey wings with mac and cheese and greens. The turkey wings were very flavorful and tender, and the mac and cheese was solid. I'm personally not a fan of greens with the stems still in them, so I didn't finish those -- but the overall meal was still good. Drink options are mostly canned sodas like Pepsi and ginger ale -- nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. The cabbage was cooked to a mush, the yams are overly sweeten and the oxtails were very small and may have a mix of neck bones the meat had to much fat, it was chewy there was no other content such as butter beans and rice added to the ox tails. I was craving soul food so I stopped by Thee Soul food Kitchen. There was no one in line, so I was able to order right away. It's setup cafeteria style, but some items are made to order. They had turkey wings, baked chicken, ribs, fish, pork chops, Mac n cheese, greens, desserts, and more. I ordered the smothered pork chops, string beans, yams, and Mac and cheese with a piece of chocolate cake. The pork chops were tender and the gravy was good. It wasn't salty like some gravies I've had, so I appreciated that. the green beans were seasoned well and the Mac n cheese was good. I wasn't a fan of the yams, they didn't taste like butter and cinnamon like I'm used to, but the did have a strong vanilla extract taste. It was just to much!! But the texture of them was good. The cake was dry. But the frosting was good. I asked the cashier if it was made in house, but she wasn't sure. I do wish it came with a roll or corn bread or something on the side. The meal did what it needed to, and I'd return. The service was ok I guess. It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't seasoned. Lol. When I walked in, the cashier was blowing her nose with tissue. Once my plate was made, and they brought it to the register I asked her would she not touch my plate because she was blowing her nose. She lied and said she only used one hand. I'm like yeah right!! I asked for water out of the case and she touched my water with her lost nosed hands. I saw both hands on the tissue. Just blatantly lied. Then the baked chicken was hard like beef jerky! I swear!! It was so hard!! I exchanged it for meatloaf! The meatloaf was awful! It was hard and dry! What an awesome dinner experience. We had the smothered turkey wings, which were excellent. We had the smother pork chops, the crab cakes and Mac and cheese and sweet potato pie and brownie. My girlfriend and I decide to give this place a try after seeing their van while picking up groceries earlier in the day. We arrived shortly after 7 p.m. and joined the line of other customers. We were in line for about 15-20 minutes; the wait would have been shorter if the cashier had remained on the register instead of packing orders for door dash or something. There could have been more frontline help for the cashier and the one lady packing orders. We ordered a 2 piece turkey wing dinner with rice and gravy, macaroni and cheese & a smothered porkchop (2 pork chops) meal with rice and gravy & macaroni and cheese. After our meals were packaged, they sat for 5 minutes on the counter due to the bottleneck at the register (cashier not at the register). The food itself was delicious! The turkey dinner ($14.99) came with two good size flat pieces with the wing tips. The gravy complimented the wings perfectly, nicely seasoned with strings of onions. The macaroni was gooey with cheese and had the baked cheese crust on top. Visible throughout the macaroni were specks of pepper. The smothered porkchop meal ($12.99) was just as good. It came with 2 pieces of pork chop, about the size you find in a grocery store. Well seasoned and fried and it's gravy was also good and thick. Both meals came with cornbread; had to reheat because they got cold on the way home. The food tastes like someone's grandma is in the kitchen making it. Worth a return visit to try other items. CONSISTENCY: In the last year that we've eaten from here the food has been delicious overall - we may have eaten here a total of 6 times and the food was a disappointment only 1 time. So I can understand those who were disappointed on their first time but you should definitely give them another try. HOW TO ORDER: If it's your first time, I recommend ordering during lunch - the food will be the freshest. Just like with Boss Queen's Cafe most soul food and Jamaican restaurants tend to let the quality of their food depreciate as the day progresses = the later you order in the evening the more of a risk you take. Call ahead or order DoorDash so you don't have to wait in line. WHAT TO ORDER: They brag about their sweet potatoes being fresh cut daily for candied yams. This is not a healthy soul food spot so if you're afraid of sugar, salt, and flour you're going to need to go somewhere else. The fried chicken was so good it had my mama and grandma asking for clarification, "Now where did you say you got this chicken again? It's some kind of good." Lol. The turkey wings sometimes come with gravy and some times they don't but either way it's falling off of the bone and is full of flavor. The fish could have been fried harder for my liking but in fairness I didn't request "fried hard." You could tell it was fresh. The green beans can be salty but the flavor is good, the same with mama's collards (which has the stalks in them if you know you know) a bit salty and the flavor was ok. The Mac and cheese was fresh, seasoned just right and just the right amount of cheesiness. So if your adding salt to any of this food we'll all know you've got a problem lol! All you'll need is vinegar and hot sauce. SHOULD YOU EAT HERE? I recommend them. They keep their menu short which I appreciate because it shows they are putting time into perfecting their craft instead of being all over the place. You can't place an order on the phone unless you hang up and call back a 3rd time after being put on hold for 8-10 mins each time. Then they are always "out of" whatever you order. I place a to go order - 45 mins later, came to pick it up and they are "out of" everything I ordered. So I had to change my order and wait another 10 mins for some damn fries. I'm one and done!!! I will gladly take the 40 min drive to Portsmouth to eat from The District where they are seldom "out of" and the food is delicious !!
