We have a history to this place. We went here when it was on Colley and walked out before ordering food because we didn't like the vibe. Now, our favorite restaurant in the neighborhood was always Crackers, and LeGrand moved in. We tried it tonight. We sat at the bar. Service was impeccable. Not overbearing at all, our bartender was right on time all the time. We started with cocktails. They were elevated. The pimento cheese was great, though my wife did not appreciate the buttered bread (La Brioche bread really is good on its own). The salads were impressive. I got the pork shoulder steak special and my wife got the fresh catch which was halibut. We finished the evening with a pot de crème and coffee. I'm sticking with a 5 star rating because the food, service, and drink was spot on. The ambience is lacking. The bar is a mere shadow of its former self. The bottles are good but sparse. It's filled with random toys, tools, plastic bottles, and plants. I'm not knocking them for that because they didn't have a bar before. I'm hoping they find some purpose for that space. read more

This place is phenomenal and I can't wait to come back! Chef Stephen put together a tasting menu for us including braised lamb, shishito peppers, a double cheeseburger, and other fantastic dishes; each well-executed and seasoned masterfully. LGK represents an evolution of the food scene in Norfolk and surrounding areas, and the prospect of this continued growth makes me very excited; especially as someone who calls Virginia his home state. The braised lamb neck was probably the most delicious preparation of lamb that I've ever had, but the turnips served alongside them (cooked simply with salt, butter, and fresh thyme) were even better! I was very impressed overall, and would trust this team of chefs completely regardless of what they are cooking from Stephen's ever-changing menu. Wow! This was by far the best food we've had in the Tidewater area. We ordered the winter salad and the mussels. The winter salad (beets, greens, whipped ricotta, and orange slices) was a delicious combination of flavors. The mussels were soaked in some sort of mouthwatering broth. I ordered the sea scallops entree and my husband ordered the pork hash. Everything was just phenomenal. We had the semifreddo for our dessert. We were promptly seated at the bar near the window. It was nice for people watching. The extension with the industrial decor looked fine. It was a kid-friendly fine-dining experience with excellent and friendly service. The highlights of our dinner were the innovative $12 clams and the $9 burger with jalapeños and pickled salad. The classical $26 Mediterranean sea bass with clams and red potatoes, $6 banana pudding and $9 Pinot red wine glass were good. Both bathrooms were clean with a huge mirror and no changing tables. The restaurant is small and unassuming on the outside, but delivers outstanding food every time. The menu is limited but sophisticated......and the flavors are amazing. We had the duck breast, pork , and steak dishes last week and each was absolutely perfectly cooked, wonderfully seasoned and delicious. My steak was a perfect medium rare with leeks, mushrooms and potatoes. Portions are so generous that we each took away an extra meal in a box. I highly , highly, highly recommend the chocolate pot de creme. I am not a dessert eater but could not stop with this dessert. The service is friendly and extremely professional. LeGrand is GRAND! Cozy and quaint little spot reminds me of dining in cafes in Santa Barbara, CA. Super fresh ingredients were tasted in our meals and the appetizers and desserts were great! The dining area is not very large and it's not very private seating so be aware you might end up hearing the life-stories of other patrons around you. The staff is very nice and attentive. So excited to eat at Le Grand. Have been there before and the burger is good. Got there at 830 --was told 10-15 minute wait. Was told to go get a drink someplace on Colley. I didn't want to drink so we chose to stand and wait-It was now 845 and I am hungry. She told us again to go get a drink. At this point I now think I'm bothering the hostess by standing inside. There is not nearly enough time to talk about LeGrand Kitchen thoroughly. I won't even try to talk about individual dishes as they change weekly and every thing I've ever tried has been one of the best meals of my life. You just have to go on the promise that you will 100% not be let down and will have a fantastic time. Chef Stephen Marsh uses the freshest local ingredients possible and continually stays ahead of trends, making innovative, but delicious and comforting dishes. As for things that stay on the menu, the farm egg shmear appetizer is a must if you like deviled eggs. The burger has been voted best in Norfolk, and rightly so. LeGrand has got to be my favorite place in Norfolk. Stephen has put together such a wonderful place and it's much needed in the neighborhood. The menu here changes seasonally and there are always new specials, which makes it great for trying new things. My favorite appetizers are the egg schmear and pimento cheese, but there are always new and rotating additions that I like to try and they are all equally great. In the past I've tried the burrata, shishitos, and poutine - if they ever make it back to the menu, make sure to get them. The chicken entree is always great and the way it is prepared/the sides it comes with changes but is always delicious. Like everyone else, I love the burger here. It's simple but so good. When in doubt, order the burger. Desserts here are also inventive and great - the pot de creme is rich but the pretzel crumble makes it so you can't stop spooning it into your mouth. LeGrand is such a great experience, the staff is always nice and I love sitting at the bar to watch them cook. When there is a wait, it is usually short and goes quickly. I visited Virginia for the first time and had my first meal at LeGrande. Food was absolutely amazing and the chefs do amazing work with the plating and flavors of every dish. I came with my sister and brother and we ordered 2 entrees and 3 appetizers to share. We ordered the foie gras pate, the schmear, and burrata plate along with scallops and the pork shoulder on a bed of rice grits. The place is tiny and we sat along a bar of the restaurant. This place is not good with groups so come with a friend or a significant other only. That was probably the only downside. Overall, you can't go wrong with any dish at LeGrande. read more

Three of came to eat here. Service was terrific, beer was good. They have a menu that changes a couple times a week based upon local food availability. Duck confit was not really a confit since it wasn't browned, but delicious nonetheless. Steak with baby gem lettuce was a fulfilling, healthy dish although lettuce did not have much flavor. Before we got our food we were given a pimento appetizer. What a privilege to eat great food at a local and original spot. In terms of the food prepared, this restaurant somewhat reminded me of Foode in Fredericksburg, except that Foode has more of a communal dining setup.LeGrand Kitchen's small size and neighborhood feel made me think of eateries in Hampden, Baltimore. At LeGrand, you can either dine at the counter, by the window, or at one of their smaller tables.Appreciate that they don't go over the top with the industrial look (pendant lights but no exposed pipes). Not so cookie cutter, not so contrived, more organic. In either case, it's a charming and original place to experience some artistically prepared dishes that taste amazing. I love that they use regional and seasonal ingredients and highlight their flavors. You can really taste the freshness. The rotating menu according to what's available each week is pretty neat. Ordered the asparagus salad with poached egg and farro to share. The egg was poached perfectly and added a bit of decadence to an otherwise very healthy dish. I thought the vinaigrette could have been a little more prominent. Tom N. disagreed. For my main, I got the flounder atop a bed of buttered carrots puree. Amazeballs! The buttered carrot puree was so creamy, delicious, and beautiful. The pan-seared fish on top was crisp on the outside and juicy and fleshy on the inside. The puree complemented the fish nicely. LeGrand's menu is definitely more meat-centric, and Tom N. opted for one of their meat options, the pork belly. And just like reviewers had mentioned, the pork belly was awesome. Tom N. was very pleased. We didn't have room for dessert, but I'm definitely getting dessert next time I visit. Due to the limited space, it's evident that staff want to move you in and out quickly. Not sure what I missed about this place. We went here after reading all the great reviews expecting to be wowed but we felt "Meh" at best. The atmosphere was nice and the service good. My boyfriend and I came here on a busy Friday night, and they rapidly made room for us at a side counter. But apart from that, there's nothing to rave about this restaurant. We ordered the egg schmear for appetizer. It was as good as having deviled eggs on ritz crackers. That's about all you need to know. I had the burger for my main course. It is their take on a BigMac but it literally tasted like a BigMac. So for a Friday night dinner I had Ritz crackers and a BigMac. Where is Shannon?? I've been to Legrand a bunch of times with my girlfriend in the last year. The first visit was because of the buzz, and yes, food was good but we kept coming back because of Legrand's waitress, Shannon. What a rock star. On our first visit, she took our names for the wait list and during our meal, she continued to use my name (Joe) which made me feel like old friends. Each time I came back, I got a warm welcome - by name - and we'd always chat about what's new with us with her. She made us feel like regulars on just our second visit. Since old Legrand was so small, we could see her interact with other guests and realize that she treated everyone as warmly as she did us. So why the two stars huh? Well, She's gone and Legrand just wasn't the same. We came for dinner last night after a bit of a hiatus and were surprised to see the restaurant was done with the expansion (it's double in size now). So the whole feel of the place different, less cozy. We also noticed the regular waitress wasn't there to greet us. The menu changes so much that the only thing you could count on was seeing her and having a great time. The girls they have there now were nice and the meal was fine, but something was missing about the experience. My GF asked one of the girls where Shannon was and she only said that she didn't work there anymore. I don't know why, but if the owners see this, please, please Beg her to come back or please email me and tell me where we can find her. We'll gladly go eat anywhere she's serving now if she's still in Hampton Roads. So many places rely on food or some cheesy theme to get people in the door, but they don't put enough value on the SERVICE. Waitresses like her were so hard to find. We really haven't experienced anything like it anywhere else and she's a huge reason we we loved Legrand. We left last night feeling deflated and bummed out... We got seats at the front row watching them cooking in front of us. It was cool, clean and organized--my OCD fell in love with the place. We ordered the farmers shmear--it's delicious. This was an amazing place for great food! It's a small restaurant that only seats 16 and has a very small menu as well. But do let this foul you, the food packs a big punch of flavor. We got there and they were packed, but we were determined to eat there. We waited about 30 minutes and were seated at the bar. The staff was amazingly friendly and accommodating. My wife and I went here for her birthday and it was outstanding! The restaurant is very cozy and small, but they do not take reservations, so plan accordingly. That being said, the food is well worth any hassle! The pimento cheese and egg smear appetizer are simple and ridiculously good. You must get some! You'll go so far as to eat with with your fork once the crackers run out. For the second course, we had the Windmill Point Oysters with Maine uni and nduja, as well as the Burrata with baby root vergetables, roasted beets, hazelnuts, and lemon. Both dishes were superb. I had had uni once before as sushi in Tokyo and I was not a fan. However, when combined with the oysters and nduja, it was such a great mix of flavor. For the main course, I had the Pork Ragu with Autumn Olive Farms shoulder, Brumale truffle, and Anson Mills polenta. The flavors were subtle and satisfying. However, my wife had the Sea Scallops with blood orange, carrots, black garlic, and cauliflower purée. Only one word describes that dish... wow! The Chocolate Budino and Butterscotch Bread Pudding dessert were also quite good, as well as the cheese platter we received between the main course and dessert. This seems to be the place that we wind up at for date night a lot. Amazing experimental food choices, and friendly staff. The burgers, and we have tried several now, are fantastic. GREAT flavor and I always question the toppings and am always super happy with the result. Had the flounder recently, it was tender and flaky and so moist and yummy...the veggies were perfectly prepared and went beautifully with the light sauce. But my personal fave are the pots du creme... every version I have had is amazing and I crave one at least 3 times a week. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is that it is always hot in there and sometime service is a bit slow... for a small space it is quite loud and sometimes hard to relax as a result. read more

This gets five stars because you simply cannot get a better meal for the money. If you are looking for a "five-star restaurant", the size of the place and the selection of food may not be for you. You will not have three different servers, a multipage menu and a sommelier, so look elsewhere. However, this really is the first-five star diner/tiny kitchen I have been in. First, this is only open from 5pm to 10pm. You will find that this is because the kitchen is super small and the prep is very extensive for a lot of these items. This is not your typical diner of hot dogs and bad chili. For example, when we were there we ordered an appetizer dish called "Charred Okra", which was incredible. Part of the reason this was so unique is that the onions in it had been given about 45 minutes in a sous vide treatment and then smoked for another 45. You will never have tastier onions, trust me. The okra, too, was fresh, never frozen. They are clearly cooking seasonal foods, so just procuring these ingredients will take time. When you arrive you may have to wait outside as there may be about 20 seats inside. There wasn't a phone number so calling ahead is useless. Now, if you must leave there are very good restaurants nearby (Chow, for example, is about two blocks away). But try to wait it out because even if you order the chicken sandwich, which my wife did, you will never have a better chicken sandwich (I am serious about this). When we finished our meal, I turned to my wife and said, "Have you ever been to a restaurant where you simply wanted to come back ASAP just to try the other food you couldn't try?" The place is small nd only sits about 20. I ate at the counter, overlooking the kitchen area. Started talking with the chef on what to eat and found out he owns the place. From what he mentioned for an appetizer, went with the Confit cooked pig ear potato salad. Pricier appetizer. Strange but it was rather good. Was cooked in a skillet, then flash cooked on flat top to sear the outside. Inside was a little gelatinous, he warned me about that. But the flavor worked. For main meal, had the double party burger. Wow. Pickled shredded lettuce on top, although I forgot to say no to the sliced jalapenos. But, great burger. I was crazy but could not say no to desert. I went with the peanut butter flavored pound cake. Warmed up on the grill, gave it a slight char on the outside. Had a couple of squirts of a grape sauce with some fresh whipped cream. Another unique dish but enjoyed. Cool little place playing some old school rock and roll in the background. A little pricier than average place but well worth it. Incredible hidden gem! I've actually known about this intimate place only because it's on the corner of a street that has my dogs doggie daycare :) SO happy I finally stopped in for dinner. Their menu changes every few days and I got a grits and western mushroom dish that totally hit the spot. I really love mushrooms and the chef said that some of them were flown in the day before obviously specifically for this dish. (There were also Oregon truffle shavings on there). The man got a steak with mushrooms and whipped potatoes which were also incredible but I loved my dish more. We also got an appetizer which was "the better part of deviled eggs" as they liked to call it with smoked paprika, chives and ritz crackers...YUMMM. It's a very small place that holds maybe 20 people, I want to say maybe even 15. We sat at the "bar" and could see the chefs cooking the entire time which is super fun. Steve's efforts at Legrand are as good as it gets. We've been twice in a week since discovering this little place (with more trips to come in the near future). The dishes are well thought out, locally resourced and all components are made in house. So far we've had a couple of the menu staples (burger and BBQ) and several other specials. All were amazing. The griddle cooked hamburger and onions are as good as I've had. They serve it on a bun from the best local bakery and the lettuce and shallot mayo are just right to highlight the flavors cooked into the burger without overwhelming it. The open faced BBQ sandwich features a great toasted bread covered in an amazing smoked pork and piled with house made pimento cheese spread. To finish it up it's covered with white BBQ sauce and pickles. It's an ample and sophisticated way of presenting a classic set of flavors. We've also tried the brussels sprouts and sunchokes, they were cooked just right and go together nicely, particularly with the house made bacon to bring it all together. The best dish I've had is the scallop crudo. This dish features perfectly balanced contrasting flavors in each bite. The sweet and crunchy apple is paired with a fresh scallop, some edible flowers, a great olive oil with a little lime and a small (but potent) slice of red chili. It's a dish that would stand up in a restaurant charging far more than the 12 buck it will cost you here. Every dish we've had was both well conceived and perfectly executed and the service is fast and friendly. If you go, sit at the bar and enjoy watching Steve and his crew prepare all of your food. A friend had told me we needed to try this restaurant. After seeing the reviews and reading the menu online, I can honestly say I've haven't been this excited to try a new restaurant in a long time. It did not disappoint! First off this place is TINY. I think it seats like 15 people or something. I only remember there being two 2-top tables, the rest of the seating is bar style seating. However you can watch them cook your food as the bar faces the kitchen area. I had the braised short rib and it was so good, I was torn between eating slowly and wanting to savor the flavor or simply inhaling the food on my plate. My friend enjoyed her dishes as well. Service was great. The menu seems to change daily / seasonally. Price is more than reasonable - the food is worth every penny. I will be going back, very soon. read more

I went to LeGrand Kitchen after seeing all of the rave reviews on Yelp. It probably ranks in the top 3 best reviewed restaurants in Norfolk so my expectations were pretty high. Their menu supposedly changes based on the season which is great. There was fortunately no wait when I went. The restaurant is pretty small and can probably fit about 15 people or so. It has a nice atmosphere and the service there is very friendly. We started with the Farm Egg Schmear which is kind of like deviled eggs splattered on a plate with some Ritz crackers. Unfortunately, my friend and I were not a fan of this appetizer. The schmear tasted essentially just like mayonnaise on a plate. They were kind enough to give us more Ritz crackers when we ran out, but I kind of just preferred to eat the Ritz crackers alone without the schmear. I think the most popular item on their menu is the burger. The burger was okay. I didn't have any complaints about the burger. The bun was nice, the patties were cooked well, and it tasted okay. To be honest, given the spectacular reviews (relative to other Norfolk restaurants), I expected an amazing burger. I wanted to be wow-ed with this burger and to think that I would come back to the restaurant just for the burger. However, it was just okay. If I had to choose between LeGrand or Five Guys for a burger, I would choose Five Guys. The other item that we had was the flounder. This item was okay. The fish was a little bit hard and a little cold when it arrived at our table, but we were able to finish it. The burger was much better than this dish though. Were my expectations too high when I entered LeGrand? Possibly. However, this place is an okay restaurant to go to and I don't see myself going again. read more

This a tiny gem! The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, the staff is friendly, and the food is to die for. We had an egg schmear as an appetizer (a MUST! And the reason we went). We honestly had to resist picking up the plate and licking up the leftovers. My mac and cheese was beyond succulent: huge, tender chunks of bacon and mushrooms with a perfectly fried egg on top. I could eat it everyday! Dessert was also incredible: chocolate pot de creme that was so delicious that it felt like a crime to stop eating.
