La Mesa Review: We came here for a friends birthday & overall was a cool spot and nice aesthetic! Here were some points that stood out for service, pricing & food. To begin, we had a reservation for a table and still waited like 30 min when we got there. We were able to wait by the bar and the drinks were good, bartenders were so fun! I ordered a Moscow mule and it was $20 kinda shook for just one drink but at least it was good. We finally got seated but at the back of the restaurant so we were not in the "show" area. They did let us get up and closer to watch & it was a really cool performance!! I really enjoyed watching the fire dancers it was so dope & for that I give this place a good rating. I do wish the show went on through the night though because it was only about 10 minutes. As for the food...save your money! I am all about paying for some bomb food but the prices do not match quality in my opinion. Every plate is about $30+ and soo small. I ordered the Wagyu Sliders and they were mid compared to others I've had in the past. The tacos were so tiny literally gone with one bite haha. Le Jardin, La Mesa, call it what you want, but I gotta say I had lots of Le Fun! Bestie invited Hubbers and I for a Friday dinner here. She mentioned she's never been either but her husband has been bugging her to go. For some odd reason, she responded with, "Only if Jenn goes..." I brought it up to Hubbers and he was down. (Yay!) He and I had NO idea what this place was about, but we decided to just sorta wing it. More importantly (for me, at least) I really REALLY just wanted to hangout with Bestie! Hubbers and I came th rough super early (like 30 minutes early) for our reservation slot. From the outside, it didn't look like anything, really, but at entry, we were immediately impressed! The entire area was beautifully decorated. The soft lighting and smooth music added to the overall relaxing feel. Plenty of photo op spots! We were in here not even five minutes and we already loved it. We opted for a couple of drinks before Bestie, Hubby and another friend came through. With reservations on hand, we were seated immediately. Hubbers and I got the chance to screen through the menu and knew what we wanted. But it all also depended on our party. We all collectively agreed to do everything family style. LA MESA GUACAMOLE: It was a must have for Hubbers and I. We have never had it served with black sesame rice chips, so this was a treat. Guac was freshly made and seasoned perfectly and the fresh made rice chips not only were delicious, it paired very beautifully with this dip. Great starter! SALMON CRUDO: I've had my share of salmon crudo, but there was something special about this one. The salmon was the true center of this dish and the herbs did their magic. However, it came with a familiar taste I couldn't put my finger on... it was salty, briny, that metallic taste. I guessed water from freshly shucked oysters - and I was right. (The chef confirmed it.) Who came up with this, I loved the combo! This, too, is a first for Hubbers and I. It might not be for oyster fans, but it truly worked for us. This plate was empty in no time. BURRATA SALAD: Another must-have for Hubbers and I. This is a fantastic palate cleanser. When combining a bit of everything in one bite, you get a sweet, salty, sour and creamy combination dancing all over your palate. Loved this as well! SPICY TRUFFLE PASTA: I asked if I can have this made mild (only if it's possible) and was met with, "No problem!" The heat still came through (it was more like a "kick") and the pasta was a perfect al dente. The aroma of the truffle was subtle but clearly present and the acidity level of the tomatoes were just right. WAGYU TOMAHAWK: Hubbers and I agreed we'd only get this if our party makes even the slightest mention of it. When Bestie said, "Hey, wanna share the toma..." I'd already interrupted her with a resounding "YES!!!!" We we're all split at how to have to prepped, and we asked if it was possible to get it between a medium-medium rare. How they perfected the finish blows my mind. And seasoned with garlic and coffee grinds (ANOTHER FIRST!) every bite was just sublime. FOOD: 5. Amazing. SERVICE: 5. VALUE: 5. Bestie was far too generous and paid for the whole thing, but whatever she paid: WORTH IT!!!! PARKING: Street parking will be a challenge. Pay the $20 for valet. OVERALL: 5. There was a saxophonist walking around, there was a fire show, and the whole place turned into a dancing/club venue post dinner service. We had the most amazing evening! We get seated and our told that we'll be sitting there for 90 minutes; 3. Waitress comes and introduces herself to us and tells us as well about being there for 90 minutes; takes our drink orders and the drinks took awhile to get to us; 4. She comes back to take our orders, and AGAIN brought up the "90 mins" like if we didn't hear her and the hostess the first couple of times already!!! I told her that we're not stupid, ignorant or deaf, we know about it since it's been told to us NUMEROUS TIMES!; we placed our food orders and it took them FOREVERRRRRRRR to bring us our food and drinks; 5. When she came back AGAIN, I reminded her how we're going to go past the 90 mins since they're taking forever for the food and drinks, that if they rush ppl to eat, then the service should be more on point!; 6. The "experience" or "show" lasts about 5 mins, I thought it was going to last longer with the way they kept announcing this "show/experience" if you've been to any Caribbean all-inclusive resorts, you've already seen this show, it's just 2 girls walking around and dancing with y fire. I love a place that makes you feel as if you were transported away from the city and all your worries. The staff were all friendly and helpful with helping us get some photos. The highlight of the night were the fire dancers! Beautiful women with impressive skills. We had great service from everyone. One of our drinks was spilled and they rushed over to clean up the table and replace the drink. Food was brought out within 30 minutes and we were a group of 9 very hungry women. I was not a fan of anything there. First off they don't tell you that there's a service charge on top of a tip. I paid $60 for two drinks that we're about $20 each and on top of that a 75 dollar service charge for the table, not including a tip. I wish they would tell you that at the beginning and not at the end. On top of that the food was not that good and half of our party got sick the next day. They also tell you that there's a show, but when I was there, I only saw the girl dancing once for like five minutes. La Mesa restaurant review: I went for my birthday dinner and had a good experience. beautifully decorated, delicious drinks and food and enjoyed the fire dancers (we saw 2 performances). We had good service as well. Food- lamb chops, Chilean sea bass, and tuna tataki. The tuna was so fresh and melted in your mouth. The lamb chops were better than the sea bass. Drinks - whiskey sour and la coco (I believe). The whiskey sour was great! I wish the portions were larger given the price. Came here last night for my friend's birthday. We had a reservation but still waited over an hour for our table. We were able to get drinks at the bar area while we waited, but they took a long time to get too, and the bar area was crowded, and we were constantly in the way of servers running drinks to their tables. If you're coming here, be prepared for standing through long wait times! There was an acrobatic show while we waited, which was cool. The place is well decorated, and there were a couple spots to take pictures. Definitely Insta-friendly. The food and drinks were really good, which is why I still gave it 4 stars despite the wait. I got the Costa Azul cocktail, which was well balanced and looked cute. For food I got the salmon and truffled cauliflower. The salmon was delicious but the cauliflower rice it was served on was cold, which was unexpected. The truffled cauliflower had a yummy sauce and the batter was nice and crispy and flavorful. The ambiance is amazing and our food last night was really good. Having said that, I wish I had read the reviews before going (though a friend celebrating her birthday picked it, so I'm not sure I had any other option). As others state, the restaurant tacks on a 20% service charge (WHICH IS NOT A TIP and they are quite clear to tell you that) and a 3% "table fee." So, you're looking at anywhere from 35-45% more on your bill than what you ordered... and the prices are high to start. I would have sucked up the pricey menu for the atmosphere alone, but when you put ridiculous fees on that are not disclosed until the bill comes, coupled with average service (at best), no thank you. We had 7:15 PM reservations. It took nearly 40 minutes for our order to be taken after we our initial drink order. We had to attempt to flag down our server more than once, only to ask the busboy to find her for us. Then, the hostess came by and told us that people were waiting and we needed to wrap things up. When I pointed out that the service was slow and this was a product of their own doing, she copped an attitude with us. Drop the attitude - you're not that amazing and we won't be back. La Mesa Lounge My reservation was for 9:15 but we didn't get seated until closer to 10pm. I was really confused because there were multiple tables available but they still mad us wait. The hostess wasn't very friendly either. Food- Our server was great! She took our food order right away. I got the steak tacos which were really good. My friends got the pasta and the sushi roll and said the food was flavorful. One comment is that the portions are ridiculously small for the price. The chocolate hazelnut cake was delicious and I enjoyed every bite. Ambiance - The vibe here is really fun. There is entertainment throughout the night but if you're sitting too far out from the center, you may not get to get a close up of everything. One reason we were sold on this place was because of the ambiance and decor. We were all so excited to have a girls night here and have this be our first stop. First off, before you make a reservation make sure you're fully aware of the minimum that you're required to spend if you have a reservation after a specific time or on a specific day. That alone rubbed me the wrong way from that start because no well known restaurant will ever ask you to spend a minimum. You either spend what you spend and that's it. Second, our server was horrible. She was friendly (Lindsay) but she dropped off our pitcher of the drink we ordered and never served us. I took it upon myself to serve the ice and pour our own drinks. Then, she would complain about little things when it was her job to begin with. The food itself was alright. Nothing special and the servings are very tiny for the price you're paying. The drinks were not impressive either. Also, we ordered a chocolate mousse for dessert for our friends bday and what we received was more like a fried ramen with sour cream inside and cheese. On the bill, it stated chocolate mousse but that was a lie. Another disappointment. Last, but not least it never stated anywhere there was a service charge/Covid fee tapped onto the bill. So beware of this so you're not surprised when you get an additional $75 on your check for the apparent PPE they have to wear- which they didn't have shields that apparently that fee was toward and the server gets 10% of. As cute as this place may be on Instagram, we had a much better time at our second reservation where the food was delicious and the drinks were too. Came here for a music dancing night. Had so much fun, even when talking to strangers in their mask, it was super nice to be safely mingling during this pandemic. We had reservations and was seated right away. Food was good, drinks were bomb. Most importantly the music was super fun and loud, we ended up dancing at our table. This place is super poppin, recommend to come earlier than your reservation slot. Soft Tacos- these were decent, pretty looking too. Soft Shell Sliders- split half with my gf to stay thin, i thought they were delicious. I liked them a lot. Lamb Lollipops- thumbs up, not bad . We have enjoyed fine dining all over LA and have never seen a tomahawk steak served this way or that tasted so horrible. Then the kicker was the check comes and the cutting board of fat they served us had a $170 price tag! Can you say overpriced? Reservation minimum after certain hours: this floored us, in order to make reservations on certain nights after 8:30pm you are required to spend $1,000 on Thursday's and Friday's and a minimum of $1,200 on Saturday. Seriously? They describe this place as being in Tulum, all they did was keep the old club lights up and throw some Michael's plastic vines up. This place is a joke and overrated at best. I tried the Smokey coconut drink didn't like it, the fuego margarita I do recommend if you like spicy drinks. I ordered SALMON RIVIERA, the presentation is great and the salmon has so much flavor so good. The service was also good, the server was attentive although it was busy. The place and music were great. The food was okay - honestly, you guys could really step it up. I ordered the same items that I get in other restaurants - crudo, sashimi etc, but yours didn't have a kick to it and unfortunately, wasn't too impressive. These items aren't too hard to change. We were a party of six on Saturday our reservation was at 7:15, 4 people in our party had to wait 30 minutes to be let in. We ordered appetizers and drinks and waited for our friends. The waitress at 8:45 presented us with the check and told us our time was up. We were not even offered or allowed to order desserts. We made a reservation here for dinner with some friends. Both food and drinks are good. The place is really loud tho, maybe because our table was by the DJ stand, which I think is not the best placement. I had to yell my words. Our waitress was good, she checked in on us frequently. The music is amazing, the guy at the entrance so friendly but the service inside is so racist, they judge you and make you feel like your can't afford the prices, specially one of the guys trying to making us to leave saying we have to spend more than 200, once we say that's not a problem, he don't have an opción. I can applaud the impeccable service, the fast turnaround to get our food and drinks out, the service charge in general and the very short entertainment. What was a kick in the balls was the sales tax, it's 9.5% last time I checked. Was charged way over that amount, plus a ridiculous service charge incorrectly calculated..left no additional tip. This place is a social media trap, intelligently marketed as an experience to never forget yet at 9p on a Friday, this place barely met half its capacity. Will not be returning. read more
