The location and interior of the restaurant are quite stunning, especially during the holidays. We dined at this establishment around Christmas time when the lights were beginning to be placed, and that was very magical to see from this establishment. Staff and service were reasonably paced for the number of patrons. We received a call to dress business casual for the restaurant, but that was not the case since there were many who were dressed casually there. Furthermore, the table was covered in disposable paper tablecloths. The menu is supposed to be a French/Thai blend, but I only tasted standard Thai food. This was disappointing because I expected to be wowed with the blend of flavors. Shrimp spring rolls were very plain, loosely filled, and I have had better from other Thai restaurants. The seared scallop salad was a standout dish filled with layers of flavor. I can not say I have had this dish from anywhere else. Scallops were cooked perfectly and mixed with the other ingredients, creating a great blend of textures. The CA Tim Nuong or eggplant dish had nice flavors but was executed poorly for my taste. The eggplant was very overcooked and had mush like mouth feel. The green shrimp curry was lacking in any flavor that I would normally associate with a curry. No spice and very bland taste wise. The only upside was the shrimp size and portions. Chicken Curry was balanced much better with a good bit of flavor and spice. It was the complete opposite of the green curry for me. I would recommend this over the other curries. However, I have still had better versions of this for more reasonable prices. I got takeout here so can't really write a full review, however, my food was fresh and the ambiance and service were good from what I saw. This is a chain so take that with a grain of salt. I've never seen Goi Bun So (seared scallop salad) on the menu at any other Vietnamese restaurant, so I got that to try. I only have one critique: there's maybe like 4 scallops in the entire salad. Le Colonial has been recommended by several people, so I had expectations. I will say that the price you're paying is for the ambiance. The most disappointing aspect for me was that there wasn't anything special about the dishes. I'm sure that they are made from quality ingredients; however, you can definitely find the same foods, similar flavors for a fourth of the price at your local Thai or Vietnamese restaurant. I expected the food to be special or unique in ingredients or flavor profile for the price and the ambiance of the restaurant. I will say that the restaurant is absolutely stunning - the decorations, the warm lighting, the beautiful interior. It's fine dining; however, it was a bit disappointing to have disposable paper tablecloths over our table. We were seated by the window and had a beautiful view of the Christmas lights. I made a reservation about one week prior. I received a call two days prior to my reservation to remind me that the attire is business casual; however, plenty of diners were dressed casual. The restaurant was pretty full when we were dining, so I do recommend making a reservation. The drinks were really good! We had the lychee Paloma and Thai chili margarita. I would recommend these two drinks. The price is on par with other restaurants for drinks. Now for the food, we ordered: * Ca Tim Nuong - 9/10: a Japanese eggplant dish that was very flavorful, but the eggplants were a bit soggy for my liking. * Goi Cuon - 5/10: shrimp spring rolls - good, but nothing special compared to a local Vietnamese restaurant * Seared Scallop Salad - 10/10: this was truly the most special dish we had here. It was a combination of sweet and savory. I highly recommend this dish. I would consider going back just for this! * Green shrimp curry - 5/10: weak flavor profile, but huge shrimp and a decent amount. * Chicken curry - 6/10: strong, bold flavors with decent amount of chicken; however pretty standard curry when comparing to local Thai restaurants Few things that I found a bit surprising were: * that they did not serve the curry with rice. I love airy and bright dining area in the "atrium". We were seated in another room, which was dark, moody, and romantic. The service was great. The food was fantastic. The sights and smells of the lush Vietnamese experience fill the air as you enter. Gorgeous greenery, art work and detailed decor fills every inch yet it's open and airy with large windows in the "atrium". We loved the small plate options on the menu which allowed us to share and sample many different tastes. The tuna tartare, monkfish, dumplings, and crispy brussel sprouts were fabulous. Love a good fusion place, so was excited to try Le Colonial which is French-Vietnamese cuisine. Now it definitely felt like more upscale (great spot for a special occasion dinner) and that was reflected in the prices. The portions themselves are fairly small, so recommend going with a group and ordering many items to share family style for the best experience. Location is so luxurious to begin with - and you take an elevator up to the restaurant. the interior of the restaurant was enchanting and the bar area felt like a speakeasy! REALLY enjoyed the Seared Sea Scallop Salad up until I noticed/tasted beansprouts mixed in towards the bottom of the salad--it isn't listed as one of the ingredients included on the menu item, and I hate beansprouts so I would've asked to not have them included in the salad had I been aware. Ended up spending time picking out the beansprouts. Cocktails are great and strong, but averaged $20 each. I had a Green Makrut Gimlet, and liked the tart lemongrass taste. The space is a warm island vibe but tables are seated a little too closely together. The couple next to me could and was most definitely listening in on our convo! What an exceptional place! A colleague recommended it and we went for my birthday. The place is gorgeous and a quick and beautiful walk in the heart of Magnificent Mile. The food and service were both phenomenal. We started with the lotus root salad (the dressing was so good with deliciously marinated tofu). I went on a Sunday afternoon with two of my girlfriends - for drinks we had the lychee martini ( the best!) and French kiss. For our main course we had two orders of the Bo Luc Lac ( Shaking Beef) and Cari Tom ( Green Shrimp Curry)- along with jasmine rice for the table to share, and tied our meal with the creme brûlée for desert. The food was delicious !!! * Keep in mind the large plates will give you enough to have leftovers. The ambiance/ atmosphere at the Colonial was excellent. We visited today without a reservation and fully understand that there may not always be available seating. We entered only to briefly check whether there might be space at the bar. However, before we could even step inside, a staff member named Teena told my girlfriend to remove her hat. This was communicated in a very abrupt, almost declarative manner, rather than politely or with any explanation. At that point, we were not seated, nor had we even confirmed availability, we were just simply checking. What made the situation particularly upsetting was that once inside, we clearly saw at least two other white female guests wearing hats, one of whom appeared to be wearing a casual cap. This inconsistency made us feel singled out and unfairly treated. We believe that tone and delivery matter greatly in hospitality. Had this been communicated kindly and consistently applied to all guests, we would not have felt uncomfortable or disrespected. Unfortunately, due to the manner in which this was handled, we left feeling discriminated against. This restaurant has been a place we visited regularly every time we came to Chicago. Regrettably, this experience has changed that, and we do not plan to return in the future. read more

We were very disappointed with our New Year's Eve experience. I came a few years ago and loved the food, but I was not impressed this time. I did not see any information when booking that you could only order off a prix fixe menu. The prix fixe seemed like a bad deal ($135 for a small plate, large plate, and dessert), even if you got the most expensive menu items like we did. The hosts were lovely! The server was attentive but did not add to the experience at all. The decor is gorgeous, but they were playing covers of pop songs that kind of detracted from the vibe. More specifically on the food: the amuse bouche had good hamachi, but the crispy rice was rock hard. We enjoyed the pork and shrimp rolls. The tuna crudo was good but plain. Same with the red snapper filet. The meat in the shaking beef was good! Both the tapioca and pineapple dessert were nothing to write home about. It was so dark in here I had to turn on my phone's flashlight to see my food when it came. One whole section of the restaurant, (not the back room with the bar but the first room down from the hostess stand) absolutely reeked of mildew. I don't know if it was a waiter or the floor or ceiling or what. The beef carpaccio salad was unique and flavorful; I'd never had it before. The pho and beef in it was tender and tasty too. They had a giant, bright tv playing football in the corner; it was so obtrusive and really worsened the atmosphere. If they'd just leave it turned off, it would make the place seem more high class. My girlfriend took me here for my birthday a few days ago and this is probably top 3 restaurants I've been to in Chicago. 1. Crispy shrimp and pork rolls (9.5/10) - quite honestly the best crispy rolls I've ever had. It had a perfect balance of savoriness with the sweet chili sauce and a perfect crisp. It is definitely on the pricier end. 2. Pho (6/10) - the pho was a little bit disappointing as it wasn't as rich and flavorful as I'd expect or like, but for the price you can't go wrong for a decent portion. 3. Yellowfin Tuna Tartare (8.5/10) - I'm not usually a big fan of tartare, but this dish not only looked spectacular, but tasted amazing as well. I loved the crunch from the chip blended with the texture from the avocado and fish. 4. Shaking Beef (10/10) - the best and MOST tender meat I've ever had. This quite literally made my jaw drop with how delicious it tasted with how soft and tender the filet mignon was. This is definitely on the pricier side but worth every dollar. My husband and I went to Le Colonial to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. This year, our anniversary fell on Memorial Day and with it being a Holiday, there are not as many options to pick from. We were excited to try Le Colonial! When booking, we noted that it was for a special occasion and in the comments added that it was our 20th Anniversary. When we arrived, the hosts did not say anything about our anniversary which was fine. They led us to our table, which was clear they added an additional table on the front porch to fit more people in. We were quite crowded. Our server was quite brusque. No chit chat. When I explained it was our first time and we would like recommendations, he quickly pointed out best sellers, but he went over them so quickly it was hard to catch it all. We waited 25 minutes for our appetizers to arrive. And only 5 minutes for our entrees. We ordered the shrimp on sugar cane and the ribs for appetizers. For entrees we ordered shaking beef and chicken curry. All were tasty but not spectacular. For dessert, we were trying to decide between the pandan noir and the warm chocolate cake. Our server didn't explain what the pandan noir was but told us to order the warm chocolate cake. I was thinking they may write happy anniversary on the dessert plate- a lot of restaurants do, but no they did not. Overall, dinner was good, but expensive for what you get. I'm most disappointed that no one at all recognized our Anniversary. Why ask on your reservation form if you aren't going to do anything about it? We never saw the manager, our server never said anything or asked if we were there for a special occasion. There were plenty of people there who wandered in after Memorial Day festivities in their non-dress code clothes. We were clearly dressed up to celebrate the occasion. Overall, while the meal was fine, I don't think we'll be back. We can find equally good Vietnamese food for less than $150 per person elsewhere who may actually help their guests celebrate a special occasion. read more

Design and aesthetics are unbelievable, it really does feel like you stepped into a French Indochina hotel dining room. Staff is great, plenty of people around without feeling tight on space. Love the photos, plants, etc, beautiful place to hang out. We had Do Bien Tai Chanh ceviche, Banh Xao noodles with chicken, Cari Tom green curry shrimp, Vit Quay Pekin duck, and Ca Tim Nuong eggplant. Ceviche was by far my favorite, although you may have to ask for more chips. Banh Xao and Cari Tom were fine, no complaints but didn't move the needle. Ca Tim Nuong was particularly bland, especially compared to Yuxiang eggplant. The duck was very interesting, lots of strong flavors with sour and sweet notes, and came with a small quantity of Shiitake mushroom sticky rice (not enough for curry). It's basically anti-Asian to charge for white rice, and white jasmine rice is $4/6. Curry doesn't come with rice either for some reason? Are you supposed to drink it? From a cost/taste perspective, the menu comes off overpriced. Not bad by any means, but I would recommend this as a place to impress your guest primarily with the ambience. read more

Le Colonial is a Chicago must-have! I visited on a Saturday evening for my birthday and was not disappointed in the service, or the food. Though busy, the restaurant was still intimate with dim lighting, smooth music, and that fine dining feel. My server was extremely sweet. She was happy that I was there celebrating my birthday and did a great job making me feel special! The food was so yummy! I kept it simple but the food was elevated in quality, and taste For drink, I had one glass of Prosecco to start as I took my time to browse the menu. When I ordered my food I also ordered the "Passion" cocktail at the recommendation of my server which has mezcal and passion fruit. So so yummy perfect rec. For a starter I went with the "Cha Gio" which was a crispy shrimp and pork roll. Golden friend, nice crisp, packed with meet and met with bold flavor especially when paired with the chili lime dipping sauce. For my main entree I went with the popular "Banh Xao" a noodle stir fry, I added beef! Wow wow soooo good, I loved the wide noodles, the zing from the stir fry sauce and the beef was extremely tender. This was also very filling and I ended up having enough to go for lunch the next day. (It was even better the next day). I ended my night with the warm chocolate cake. Which they added a candle for my birthday! This was not your average cake. They lit it on fire??? Then put the ice cream on top of the fire for the perfect melt?! Omg I've never had anything so decadent, rich and moist! The service isn't what it used to be. We had a reservation for 5 and were seated at a very small table where the end flaps were pulled up. Two of us has our plates on end flaps that were tilted down at an angle and two of us were seated elbow to elbow on one side of a 4 person table. Our server rarely checked on us, mocktail orders were not delivered, extra taro chips were not delivered, water wasn't refilled etc... Our server actually left before we ordered dessert and passed us off to someone else that paid even less attention to us. He never introduced himself or checked on us. It was a very strange experience. 5 stars for the quality of the food, one star for service, 3 stars overall. Our bill was over $600. Side note, despite several notices online and in the restaurant about dress code, several patrons were dressed in old t-shirts, athletic wear, and flip flops - things have definitely changed. read more

This is such a refined restaurant. It has a classy feel with service to match. I always dress up to fit the vibe! The wine list is great with one of my favorites, Ken Wright Pinot Noir. Our group of 4 started with the yellow tuna tartare, seafood ceviche, crunchy vegetable rolls, and chicken dumplings. Everything was a hit and great start! For entrees we had the sea bass which was not as melt in your mouth that I Like, the salmon, and the hit was the spicy shrimp stir fry.
