Another lovely lunch at Le Colonial. We usually do late lunches here mid week and it's generally quiet after the lunch time rush - this time our reservation was at 2.30pm on a Saturday and the place was packed. Out of towners (the tables on either side of us were Russians), shoppers and well heeled locals, as usual. We sat in the bar area since we didn't have reservations, but received great service and had an opportunity for fun people watching. I opted for one of their mocktails which tasted really fresh. We skipped appetizers and went straight to the mains. I had the salmon which was cooked perfectly. My colleague had the sea bass and I have to admit it looked amazing. I would order that next time. One of my favorite restaurants for both the food and ambiance. There are three distinct "sections" that give off very different French-Vietnamese vibes. It transports you to outside of the city. The food is always delicious. I've tried 85% of their menu, and nothing disappoints from the pho, to the spare ribs, the red snapper, the shaking beef, curries, scallop salad, crispy egg roll, etc. Cocktails are also tasty, global, and refreshing. This time, the one off putting aspect was how focused one of the hosts were on us having to clear out by 6:45. Our reservation was 2 hours earlier and we ran a little late so we gave them a call and from that point onwards, the host kept pushing that. I got takeout here so can't really write a full review, however, my food was fresh and the ambiance and service were good from what I saw. This is a chain so take that with a grain of salt. I've never seen Goi Bun So (seared scallop salad) on the menu at any other Vietnamese restaurant, so I got that to try. I only have one critique: there's maybe like 4 scallops in the entire salad. The ambiance was nice. I really enjoyed the plants and the artwork. We started with the Cha Gio (crispy shrimp and pork roll) and the Banh Uot (Sesame Beef Ravioli). Both were pretty good, but not out of this world. The roll was pretty classic and the ravioli was definitely more unique. The signature fried rice was better than I was expecting given that it had broccoli which I thought would be weird, but was actually really good. The Shaking Beef was by far the best dish and I would go back just to have more of it! We visited today without a reservation and fully understand that there may not always be available seating. We entered only to briefly check whether there might be space at the bar. However, before we could even step inside, a staff member named Teena told my girlfriend to remove her hat. This was communicated in a very abrupt, almost declarative manner, rather than politely or with any explanation. At that point, we were not seated, nor had we even confirmed availability, we were just simply checking. What made the situation particularly upsetting was that once inside, we clearly saw at least two other white female guests wearing hats, one of whom appeared to be wearing a casual cap. This inconsistency made us feel singled out and unfairly treated. We believe that tone and delivery matter greatly in hospitality. Had this been communicated kindly and consistently applied to all guests, we would not have felt uncomfortable or disrespected. Unfortunately, due to the manner in which this was handled, we left feeling discriminated against. This restaurant has been a place we visited regularly every time we came to Chicago. Regrettably, this experience has changed that, and we do not plan to return in the future. read more

We were very disappointed with our New Year's Eve experience. I came a few years ago and loved the food, but I was not impressed this time. I did not see any information when booking that you could only order off a prix fixe menu. The prix fixe seemed like a bad deal ($135 for a small plate, large plate, and dessert), even if you got the most expensive menu items like we did. The hosts were lovely! The server was attentive but did not add to the experience at all. The decor is gorgeous, but they were playing covers of pop songs that kind of detracted from the vibe. More specifically on the food: the amuse bouche had good hamachi, but the crispy rice was rock hard. We enjoyed the pork and shrimp rolls. The tuna crudo was good but plain. Same with the red snapper filet. The meat in the shaking beef was good! Both the tapioca and pineapple dessert were nothing to write home about. It was so dark in here I had to turn on my phone's flashlight to see my food when it came. One whole section of the restaurant, (not the back room with the bar but the first room down from the hostess stand) absolutely reeked of mildew. I don't know if it was a waiter or the floor or ceiling or what. The beef carpaccio salad was unique and flavorful; I'd never had it before. The pho and beef in it was tender and tasty too. They had a giant, bright tv playing football in the corner; it was so obtrusive and really worsened the atmosphere. If they'd just leave it turned off, it would make the place seem more high class. REALLY enjoyed the Seared Sea Scallop Salad up until I noticed/tasted beansprouts mixed in towards the bottom of the salad--it isn't listed as one of the ingredients included on the menu item, and I hate beansprouts so I would've asked to not have them included in the salad had I been aware. Ended up spending time picking out the beansprouts. Cocktails are great and strong, but averaged $20 each. I had a Green Makrut Gimlet, and liked the tart lemongrass taste. The space is a warm island vibe but tables are seated a little too closely together. The couple next to me could and was most definitely listening in on our convo! The location and interior of the restaurant are quite stunning, especially during the holidays. We dined at this establishment around Christmas time when the lights were beginning to be placed, and that was very magical to see from this establishment. Staff and service were reasonably paced for the number of patrons. We received a call to dress business casual for the restaurant, but that was not the case since there were many who were dressed casually there. Furthermore, the table was covered in disposable paper tablecloths. The menu is supposed to be a French/Thai blend, but I only tasted standard Thai food. This was disappointing because I expected to be wowed with the blend of flavors. Shrimp spring rolls were very plain, loosely filled, and I have had better from other Thai restaurants. The seared scallop salad was a standout dish filled with layers of flavor. I can not say I have had this dish from anywhere else. Scallops were cooked perfectly and mixed with the other ingredients, creating a great blend of textures. The CA Tim Nuong or eggplant dish had nice flavors but was executed poorly for my taste. The eggplant was very overcooked and had mush like mouth feel. The green shrimp curry was lacking in any flavor that I would normally associate with a curry. No spice and very bland taste wise. The only upside was the shrimp size and portions. Chicken Curry was balanced much better with a good bit of flavor and spice. It was the complete opposite of the green curry for me. I would recommend this over the other curries. However, I have still had better versions of this for more reasonable prices. Overall, I would come back for the chicken curry and seared scallop salad if I had to. With that said, I have other Thai establishments that execute these dishes for far better prices. read more

I have previously been to the Houston location, and looked forward to having a meal at home. The experience was just as outstanding from our drinks, to our main dishes ( not pictured) and the desert. I went on a Sunday afternoon with two of my girlfriends - for drinks we had the lychee martini ( the best!) and French kiss. For our main course we had two orders of the Bo Luc Lac ( Shaking Beef) and Cari Tom ( Green Shrimp Curry)- along with jasmine rice for the table to share, and tied our meal with the creme brûlée for desert. My girlfriend took me here for my birthday a few days ago and this is probably top 3 restaurants I've been to in Chicago. 1. Crispy shrimp and pork rolls (9.5/10) - quite honestly the best crispy rolls I've ever had. It had a perfect balance of savoriness with the sweet chili sauce and a perfect crisp. It is definitely on the pricier end. 2. Pho (6/10) - the pho was a little bit disappointing as it wasn't as rich and flavorful as I'd expect or like, but for the price you can't go wrong for a decent portion. 3. Yellowfin Tuna Tartare (8.5/10) - I'm not usually a big fan of tartare, but this dish not only looked spectacular, but tasted amazing as well. I loved the crunch from the chip blended with the texture from the avocado and fish. 4. Shaking Beef (10/10) - the best and MOST tender meat I've ever had. This quite literally made my jaw drop with how delicious it tasted with how soft and tender the filet mignon was. This is definitely on the pricier side but worth every dollar. Le Colonial has been recommended by several people, so I had expectations. I will say that the price you're paying is for the ambiance. The most disappointing aspect for me was that there wasn't anything special about the dishes. I'm sure that they are made from quality ingredients; however, you can definitely find the same foods, similar flavors for a fourth of the price at your local Thai or Vietnamese restaurant. I expected the food to be special or unique in ingredients or flavor profile for the price and the ambiance of the restaurant. I will say that the restaurant is absolutely stunning - the decorations, the warm lighting, the beautiful interior. It's fine dining; however, it was a bit disappointing to have disposable paper tablecloths over our table. We were seated by the window and had a beautiful view of the Christmas lights. I made a reservation about one week prior. I received a call two days prior to my reservation to remind me that the attire is business casual; however, plenty of diners were dressed casual. The restaurant was pretty full when we were dining, so I do recommend making a reservation. The drinks were really good! We had the lychee Paloma and Thai chili margarita. I would recommend these two drinks. The price is on par with other restaurants for drinks. Now for the food, we ordered: * Ca Tim Nuong - 9/10: a Japanese eggplant dish that was very flavorful, but the eggplants were a bit soggy for my liking. * Goi Cuon - 5/10: shrimp spring rolls - good, but nothing special compared to a local Vietnamese restaurant * Seared Scallop Salad - 10/10: this was truly the most special dish we had here.
