The location itself is beautiful Patio was closed due to heavy rain Inside is pretty small but pretty and cozy ( although floors are REALLY slippery ) The appetizer ( steak tartare) was delicious and came out quick; However we waited way TOO long for the main dishes to come out. Visited Mon Ami Gabi with my boyfriend for Valentine's Day, and the service truly stood out. After being seated, I switched sides of the booth to sit next to him, and a staff member who wasn't even our server immediately noticed and reset the silverware on my new side. Throughout the evening, multiple team members checked on us (not just our server) which gave the experience a very polished, almost Michelin level feel. The ambiance is classic French bistro meets old money elegance: dim lighting, romantic, and perfect for date night. Food & Drinks: * Sidecar cocktail: Excellent. * French onion soup: The highlight of my meal. Rich, cheesy, perfectly oniony, and honestly one of the best French onion soups I've had. * Steak: My boyfriend enjoyed it, but I found it slightly chewy and under seasoned. The creamy sauce served with it, however, was delicious. * Mussels: Large portion with great garlic butter sauce and bread for dipping. The challenge was that most of the sauce sat at the bottom of the deep pot, making the mussels taste a bit bland at first. Interestingly, the leftovers the next day were amazing once everything had soaked in the sauce...flavorful and delicious. With a nice glass of wine, you really get the base set for a delicious steak. I got the steak frites. The real highlight is the frites. I'm not sure what they do to the fries but they're probably the best fries I've ever had with a steak. And the best part is that they're celiac-friendly. Great restaurant week experience! Our waiter was super outgoing and attentive even though the place was slammed and I love the whole vibe they've got going. The warm baguette and sweet cream butter is a great way to start, but don't fill up too much on bread! For hors d'oeuvres we went with the onion soup and the Brie. The soup was amazing - one of the best I've had. Hot and salty and a good amount of cheese and bread. The Brie was pretty good too. I liked the walnuts and the jam and it wasn't too sweet but definitely a dish on the heavier side. For mains we got the steak frites and pork loin. Even though restaurant week said classique, we were able to get the bordelaise sauce (shhhh). And I'm so glad we did; it was sooo good. I loved the onions and the tenderness of the steak and the shape of the fries. Comparatively, the pork was a little disappointing. The pork was tender, but not as flavorful or dressed and we didn't love the plums. The sage and acorn squash were a nice add though. We went to Mon Ami Gabi for a nice dinner, which is always comfortable and very elegant, and the staff does a great job making sure you feel taken care of. The food has yet to disappoint We started with the foie gras as an appetizer. This was the only real miss for me. The foie gras itself tasted really salted and had a strong egg-yolk flavor (I'm not sure if I'm describing this perfectly), which made it a little hard to enjoy on its own. It was pretty difficult to enjoy without the sides it came with. For my main, I ordered the steak frites, which came out perfectly cooked and well seasoned. The steak itself was great with the au poivre sauce. The fries were a little too thin for my liking, which made them slightly annoying to eat, but they were still a great addition with the steak. We finished with the bananas foster crepe for dessert, and that was simply delicious. A really great way to end the night. Overall, still just a solid and reliable spot with great service and a beautiful atmosphere. I'd definitely recommend it for a nice dinner out. read more

It is only a short walk from the Lincoln Park Zoo, which made it an easy transition from the cold into a warm and classic dining room. We came on the recommendation of a local classmate who takes his wife here for special occasions, so expectations were high. The meal lived up to it. We started with martinis that were crisp and well made, and the steak frites were exactly what you want from a French bistro. Tender steak, hot fries, and simple flavors done really well. We finished with the bananas foster crepe, which was rich, warm, and a great way to end the night. The atmosphere is cozy with just the right lighting and a comfortable pace. I can see why it is a go to spot for celebrations. It works well for groups, but it would make an excellent date night location. A friend and I had dinner here last night. It was a very enjoyable evening and overall the food was very good. Our server was very nice and did her best to make sure we were taken care of. Unfortunately, I feel that management gives the servers too many tables to take care of and as last night was a busy evening, our server was spread very thin. Through no fault of her own she was not able to provide the level of attention I would expect. We started with the French martinis and had a Nicoise Salad, that was on the specials menu for our appetizer. We each ordered the roast chicken for our entrée. The chicken was very moist and flavorful and the mashed potatoes very creamy. However, the mushrooms were overdone to the point of being hard. For dessert we ordered.an Apple Tarte Tatin and a Raspberry Almond Tart. Both were very good. They have a lovely patio area where they now have a happy hour during the week. I came here to celebrate a special occasion and really enjoyed the atmosphere, and the food was excellent. We ordered the Collet ($30), NA Paloma ($10), Duck Leg Confit ($23), Petite Green Salad ($15), Filet Mignon Bordeaux ($50), and Trout Almondine ($30). Everything was delicious, though I found the salad and filet portions a bit small. For dessert, we were treated to complimentary Profiteroles, Crème Brûlée, and Chocolate Mousse, both to mark our celebration and as a gesture for a service hiccup. While the service was generally good, our main concern was the long wait- it took over an hour for any food to arrive. It seemed there may have been a mix-up with the order or a delay in the kitchen. Once we brought it to the staff's attention, they handled it professionally, comped one dish, and offered additional champagne. Very charming and cozy French restaurant. We came for our wedding anniversary and the hospitality was incredible. Very diverse and tasty cocktails started the meal with some champagne to finish. This year Kelly and I have returned to Mon Ami Gabi, visiting every other month or so, and we are glad we did. The pleasures of dining here are classic and dependable. Steaks are numerous and outstanding, as is the rack of lamb, if they have it on special. Appetizers range from a raw bar, to escargot, duck leg confit, chicken liver mousse and foie gras. Loads of fish options and roast chicken on the main menu. Chocolate mousse is to die for. A rabbit dish would really tie the room together, but aside from that the bistro classics are covered and solid. Their brunch is also superb; love their eggs Benedict. Being part of the Lettuce Entertain You group, I'm always a fan of using and earning loyalty points. Our menu featured escargot, warm baguettes with salted butter, French onion soup, a delicious egg and bacon frisée salad...and those were just the starters! I thoroughly enjoyed my frisée salad...perfectly balanced and full of flavor! My next course was one of their signature dishes: steak frites. The herby butter, the perfectly cooked steak, the fries...delicious. For dessert, we had profiteroles. Basically, a cream puff cut in half with ice cream in the middle and hot fudge on top. I'd skip the dessert for something else next time, but would definitely order the first two dishes again. I also thought their black velvet espresso martini was lovely. Definitely one of the top restaurants in Chicago, especially for a very nice date night or celebrating an occasion. I came here for my birthday and it was a top tier spot. The staff are all great and the food was very good. My friend and I started off with escargots ($17.95) and a half dozen of oysters ($25.95). Both are great starters as you have some fresh oysters and have a warm bread to munch on. For the entrees, we shared the mussels ($21.95) and the steak and frites with Bernaise sauce ($38.95 + 35.95). There were plenty of mussels to share which was perfect to save as leftovers. I had to take it home which I didn't complain at all. There were plenty to eat and lots of sauce to take home as well. We enjoyed our steak which was cooked very well. We ordered some pommes puree ($7.50) on the side as we felt it was necessary with eating some steak. We decided to end with some dessert as we were enjoying our time. Came to Mon Ami Gabi for restaurant week dinner ($60). The meal consisted of a baguette, appetizers, main, and profiteroles for dessert. We got the escargot and melted brie for our apps and trout almondine and mussels marinière for our mains. Overall, I thought the food alright but the portion size was really good. The Brie was pretty rich and the trout was too buttery in my opinion, so the combo of the two was just a bit too much for me. I also thought it was amusing how much bread they gave us - baguette first and then the escargot and mussels both came with demi baguettes and sliced baguette with the Brie. We went home with two full demi baguettes at the end of the night! The baguettes come unsliced so it's a bit messy to cut and split. In terms of service, we did have to wait a bit despite having a reservation. I also found it a bit strange that they didn't give us the restaurant week menu by default and we had to ask for it separately. If this was for the food and service alone, I'd probably give Mon Ami Gabi 3 stars but I feel like it was good value for restaurant week. We walked away feeling stuff and with leftovers. read more

It has been a while since I have had a meal at Mon Ami Gabi and I mean a while, at least 10 years. Overall, it has not changed much, and we had a fun time. We started out with the Warmed Baguette with sweet cream butter and an amuse bouche. Not sure what the amuse bouche was as I did not sample it, but it could have been some sort of salad/slaw, I just don't know. But whatever it was, The Doctor and our friends enjoyed it. The Warmed Baguette was very good with the butter. I am not a butter user per se, but with a very good bread, I do like to add a smear. In addition to the Warmed Baguette, we got the Chicken Liver Mousse Pâté with red wine-Dijon mustard, cornichons, and the Deviled Eggs (smoked whitefish caviar, herbs, black pepper aioli). The pâté on the baguette was very nice, lovely texture and flavor profile. I enjoyed the Deviled Eggs very much, but based on my palate, I would say for the average diner they might be on the salty side. I am a fan of salty, but for me to comment on the level of salt in dish, it has to be on the high side. I thought the eggs were great, but would just like to put that observation out there for folks who are not as big a fan as I am. For dinner I got the Classique Steak Frites with maître d'hôtel butter which was cooked to perfection. The butter is always a nice touch, but if I am honestly, this could have used a touch of salt, but other than that it was delish. The frites on the other hand, were not to my liking cut/shape-wise. I was looking more for think fries, but these were like shoestring potatoes instead. While the flavor of the potatoes were good, I would have preferred to be eating fries with some substance behind them. The Doctor and one of our friends got the Steak Frites with the Béarnaise sauce. The sauce was on point, and the steak was good, but both of them were surprised that it was thin. It looked as if it may have been pounded that way? Not sure, but still very tasty. For dessert, I went with the Apple Tarte Tatin with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. Didn't get a photo as we I am big fan of apple desserts that are warm and have vanilla ice cream to boot. Normally I share desserts as I am not typically a big dessert eater, but I am sorry that I did share it because I could have eaten that all by myself, it was that tasty. The one sticking point for me at Mon Ami Gabi is the seating arrangement. It is nothing new and I have seen this at plenty of French restaurants, but that European seating arrangement were tables are very close together has always bothered me as I don't necessarily want to have dinner with people I don't know...HAHAHAHA! Not a deal breaker for as what I usually do is scope out the seating and next time request a table away from the action. That said, it was good to be back. Think the reason we stopped coming here is when we moved and were no longer in walking distance. There is street parking, but it is not easy to come by....so thank goodness for Spot Hero as we were able to park about 3 blocks away. So now we have a reason to return and most likely will, if only to get that Apple Tarte Tatin dessert. read more

Had dinner there last week. The restaurant was located in a nice building and you need to enter the restaurant through the entrance of the building. The place was small and crowded with people, so I ended up sitting at the bar. Ordered Baguette, Duck Confit, Sea Scallop "St. Jacque", Melted Brie. Baguette was just so-so; similar to those sold in Whole Foods. The Duck Confit was extremely salty, especially for the beans, so I ordered the Melted Brie instead. The scallop was the best dish among what I ordered. It had a great combination of sourness of juice, creaminess of sauce and tenderness of meat. Service was kinda slow. read more

One of my faves in Chicago for a fancy meal out! Mon Ami is a Lincoln Park staple, located right on the park. If you like white table cloth/steak house/old school restaurant vibes, this is for you. Always start with the warmed baguette (comes in a bag, ready to tear off and eat w/ butter & a fun lil side treat like radishes). I've tried the Shrimp Cocktail as well as the Petite Green and Heirloom Tomato salads... all were excellent! For the main course, I stick to the Steak Frites! The meat is always tender and the fries, which come in quite the array of shapes, are crisp and salty deliciousness. Of the sauces I've tried, I prefer the Au Poivre (peppercorn) over the Beárnaise. Service is top notch. I definitely recommend getting a reservation a couple weeks in advance, as it an extremely popular restaurant. I LOVE MON AMI GABI and it's so sad that there are only a handful of locations. For me being a proclaimed Paris-aholic, dining at Mon Ami Gabi is as close as I can get to being in a Parisienne cafe here in the states. I had never been to the Chicago location (just Vegas), so when I got the chance to go when I was in town for a conference, I went solo and dinner by myself. This location is smaller than the one in Vegas, and my server informed me that it's the original location. He was EXCELLENT. I believe his name was Eric, and I remember that more than two months after the meal. The fact that I was dining in the OG restaurant made it even cozier and more intimate. It also is a restaurant comprised of a couple of rooms so it's not like you're dining in one big open space. Intimate. I went with my "classic" meal selection: -The always-offered warm baguette. -Foie gras, which is as spectacular as it is in Paris -Filet with bernaise and fries -- cooked perfectly and delicious -I got creamed spinach. But it wasn't necessary. I ordered plenty of food. It was house made with like real whole leaves of spinach in a creamy sauce. -And creme brulee for dessert. We were off to a good start with well prepared cocktails and a delicious mushroom soup. Our server Seth was attentive and lighthearted. He was careful about food allergies. With our complaints, he reassured us that he'd "get to the bottom of it" which he did. The Brie appetizer tasted like nutmeg and my wife's hangar steak was tough to the point of being inedible.
