Wandering through the Marais without reservations on a Friday night, I came upon Le Bouledogue. They had a table for us hungry wanderers, and they welcomed us in. I was happy to see that most of the restaurant patrons were French, not tourists. The bistro is cramped in space, but the servers know how to manage with that limited resource. The wine list was totally fine with a wide range of prices. My husband also tried a mojito, which he said was excellent. I started with the asparagus on special, and it was divine. Perfectly steamed and tender and fresh. I then had the duck confit, and it was one of the best I've ever had. The accompanying frites were perfectly crispy and salty. For dessert, I had the taste tatin, and it was delectable. My husband had the soup, the cod, and the ice cream. He enjoyed everything. Okay. So there's a common stereotype around French brasseries in that they are usually pompous, rudely staffed, way too expensive and does not serve comforting fare with that certain continental panache. I am happy to report that me bouledogue manages to buck all those stereotypes (assuming that you are not some boorish American lacking cultural awareness). Okay, some clue about the area - it's near the Rambuteau stop on the Metro 11 line, and walkable from Les Halles and the Jewish museum of Paris (right around the corner). It's not touristy in the sense that it's away from the major landmarks, but it is touristy in the sense that there are AirBnBs everywhere. It's a bit off the beaten path in the sense that it's not on a busy north-south thoroughfare (Beaubourg) but rather on a side street (Rambuteau), but the area is still somewhat busy. So, what to expect? Les Bouledogue is a brasserie, not a bistro. What's the diff? The brass in brasserie implies the presence of a copper still for hard liquor - this implies full bar service, while bistros will only serve wine and beer. Bistros expect patrons to turn tables around relatively quickly and typically serve simple French classiques (hanger steaks au poivre with a cognac reduction, stuff like that), while brasseries typically give you an unhurried dining experience - what the French consider a quality of life. The stereotypical long lunch (90 minute) that French managers enjoy with huitres en boite chased down with a martini or 3 happen at a brasserie. For the courtesy of giving you the palate and the real estate to chill, you are expected to stow outside food away and dress up a little. In other words, don't come to the restaurant in your douchiest Billyburg track suit holding a Starbucks cup (sacre bleu, why the hell are you drinking that Americain swill instead of a cafe creme at the nearest cafe?! With the exception of a water bottle during workout, no Frenchman drink anything outdoors) while demanding immediate service - you will be asked to leave. However, if you put on a dress shirt, sit down, relax a little, use "merci SVP and pardonnez" profusely (as you should if you are a visitor to Paris), new possibilities appear. They are actually very nice and courteous to you - a Vietnamese waiter actually came over to chat with me....in English! Okay, back to the restaurant - service isn't bad if you are not a boorish American (tipping isn't compulsory - a 10% service fee is pre-baked, but I'll say match it in cash if the service is good, which it was during my visit). Decor? Elegant - what you expect a Parisian brasserie would be. Lots of brass on the trimmings, gleaming walls, good tables and comfortable seats. Of course, what you are wondering is...how's the food? Tree bon. I mean, it's not going to win it a Michelin star any time soon, but it's definitely memorable. For starters, my wife got the pork terrine with cranberries and a side salad: it's solid, but it's not her thing. I got the whelks (bulot) poached in court buillion, served cold in aioli sauce (garlicky and like a Hollandaise), which was delicious (I fed my wife a few of them, and she agreed that it was juicy, fresh and the sauce fits it to a tee). As for the mains, we got the salmon tartare, which was prepared in the kitchen (some places have the waiter chop and mix it in front of your eyes) with a salad on the side. Me, I got the duck confit with thick cut steak frites. Now, confit can either be dry, or it can be flavorful - it really depends on how it was poached in the duck fat. In their case, it was tender, flaky with the flavors of the duck well preserved. I would say very well seasoned. The steak frites were okay - a little thicker cut than what I expected, but still good. For dessert, the missus went for a chocolate fondant with a custard pudding (creme anglais) which went well with the cafe creme that we ordered. I went for a cheese plate with 3 selections. Good solid food, typical of a decent Parisian brasserie. Not much of a sticker stock, pricing is decent. Overall, a good experience. If I visit Paris I would totally go back again. read more

We went looking for a local joint in the area, and stumbled into the very charming Le Bouledogue near the Rambuteau metro. If you were wondering, yes, the place is called "The Bulldog," and yes, they have an actual bulldog that will saunter out and greet the customers. Bonus points for that. There appeared to be an equal mix of English-speaking tourists and French patrons in the shop, and reservations are accepted though not required. Menus come in both English and French, and I tried my best to get by on laughably passable French. The waiters happily obliged, though I think I did my best to butcher the language. Being Asian, I've got impossibly high standards for duck that only the Chinese and French can match. I wish I had read the Yelp reviews beforehand and known to order the duck confit. I instead went with the filet (Magret de Canard), which was still hands-down delicious and exceptionally tender. Eying the French couple at the table next to us, I also started with the provincial Oeufs en Meurette, quite tasty indeed. It was my first experience with these, and I found them preferable to the more well-known Oeufs Mayonnaise. I daresay my entree+plat combo took the cake, but all of the dishes at the table were quite appealing. I rather enjoyed the herring and potatoes starter, with a pickled, salty bite that jives with my taste buds. One dish we missed, but looked quite tasty when we saw it brought to the table next to us, was the fish cooked three ways. Solid food and solid service for decent prices. Plus a bulldog to boot. My first yelping since November 2009 is from Paris, France! Located near where I stayed on 20 rue Rambuteau, it was pretty easy to access. Also it's only a few minutes walk from Chatele Les Halles station. Menu is kindly written in both French & English. Pricing may intimidate you a bit. Starters ranges from 8 to 12 euro. Entree ranges between 18 to 25 euro. So get your stack of cash and plastic handy. I ordered cold vegetable soup for starter and beef fillet steak for entree. Since I ordered in hurry, I requested medium for the beef which soon I regret. It look thoroughly grilled on outside but inside was super juicy. It was very heavenly. Soup was great. I'm always bit hesitant when it comes to soup being served cold, this soup was exceptional. It's tomato based with lots of other herb like ingredients like rosemary, coriander, etc. Since I don't understand any French, all I could get was expression. There were no smile there. So it can be intimidating to non-French speakers. But service was swift and proper. I think if I gave even little ray of aura of "USA! USA!", treatment could have been resentful like Jennifer B stated. Thankfully I was with French native for this lunch. If they had friendly atmosphere, they would've got my one last star. read more

The Duck Confit. I was on a date with that dish, that night. Cutting in to that skin perfectly poached in its own fat and sipping on delicious French house wine, late one weeknight, in a café tucked away in a quiet street in La Marais, was the highlight of my trip to Paris. I did see Monalisa and the Eiffel Tower, neither make me close my eyes in reminiscence. That dish, however, I remember it all. The flavors, the textures and the scents. It took my love for food to another level. Amongst all the oohs and aahs I had at dinner tables in my life, this duck confit stands out. Not just for its taste, but, for the respect with which this dish was treated for days or may be weeks before it reached my plate. It just showed. I don't think I can ever order duck confit again. If I can give -5 stars I would! The owner is snobby and rude. I was seated by the owner, did not receive service for over 15 minutes. I then drank from my own bottled water and the owner kicked me out! "Allez!" he said and pointed at the door. Apparently it's rude to do so in France but I had no idea. He saw me holding my bottled water coming in on this hot day and said nothing. At least he could have asked me politely to put it away. I've travelled all over the world and have never been treated worse in my life. He even told me that he knows the people on trip advisor and can have my review removed. Such arrogance!! Stay far, far away. Hopefully other French restaurants are not like this!! read more

This was the best meal my wife and I had during our recent stay in Paris. I started with the haricots-vert appetizer (salad?) Delicious. Have you ever had the experience where you're a little sad when you finish a dish? It was like that for me. My wife had some kind of dish with leeks. She said it was good, but I didn't try it. For the main course, we both had swordfish. Delicious. I had an interesting experience with it. It was pan seared. I am honestly not used to food being not completely cooked throughout. I don't even like much pink in my steaks, but I tried it. I said to my wife, "It's not cooked much inside." She said, "Yes, but it's pretty good." I tasted a couple bites and said, "Actually, I think it might be a little better." We both got a good laugh out of that. Toward the end of the meal, a little, old French bulldog came out of somewhere and stood next to me for a while. Then he sat down on my foot and slept there for about 25 minutes. He got up and left a little while later and then came back and rested for about 20 minutes more. Sweet dog. We actually had a great experience with all of the staff. They were patient with my attempts to speak French. I had a conversation with the man who may have been the owner about my shirt (with a Chicago flag on it). I hesitated and questioned certain articles and words (Ce? Ces?), and he was patient and answered in a very nice manner. My wife laughed at me when I misheard our server ask if everything was good when he cleared the table. I said, "Non." I corrected my mistake later. My wife and I had dinner here our first night in Paris because it was just down the street from our apartment, and we didn't want to go far before the jet lag put us to bed. I had a pretty good steak, served with extremely dull steak knives. Maybe the dullest knife I've ever had in a restaurant. The fries are cut extremely thick and square, could have used a bit more salt but were really good anyway. Very well-cooked, even for being as thick as they were. We shared a bone marrow appetizer, and it was amazing, and a really big portion. Definitely worth getting! The staff was very helpful. For our first night in Paris I wasn't sure what to expect as far as how the Parisians would treat an American who doesn't speak the language, but the waiter was friendly and attentive. At one point, a man I can only assume was the owner came in with his bulldog, and he was also friendly. read more

This is not a Michelin starred restaurant but it is still a great place to dine in Paris. A tiny bit off the main tourist areas so you get the real deal here. A vibrant, friendly owner with a great staff. The food is carefully prepared and presented in a lovely way. We went back twice during our short stay in Paris. Very typical Parisian bistro - food was average with ok service. I returned 2 nights later because this was very close to where I stayed. The waiter didn't seem to recognize me and kept me waiting by the door while he spent a lot of time greeting another customer very warmly, then attended to a couple of tables- to then chat with other customers by the door... and finally turn to me to say "we are all full" and making me leave the restaurant after standing there forever. My friends and I got in from London later than we expected, and this was the only place serving dinner after 10pm within walking distance to our vacation flat. It was great. Our food came quick considering it's France (where I've never had a fast meal), which was perfect since we were starving. I hadn't read the Yelp reviews but I knew I wanted the duck confit immediately as my first meal in Paris after not being here for many years. It was a huge portion, and I just barely finished. My friend insisted on an apple tart for dessert, so of course I had to get a chocolat chaud to finish the meal. The prices were reasonable for the area, and the service and food were excellent. It's good, traditional French bistro food, but the service is scary rude-arrogant - culminating in me taking the check and the credit card up to them - after waiting for them to come pick it up - and them bringing me back the check claiming I hadn't given them a credit card. I went and found it on the floor under another table in the restaurant. It's just this kind of nonsense you don't need when you're trying to enjoy a meal. What a gem! Passed by this restaurant as I walking to another for dinner. I didn't have reservations at the other so decided to come back to this one instead. Very cute restaurant in a great area. I'm not sure of the neighborhood name, but there were lots of restaurants around and all were lively. My friend and I each ordered duck, although she ordered Duck Confit and I order Duck Filet. Both of our dishes came with potatoes and a delicious salad. The food was excellent, and we both cleaned our plates! The service was great too. Seemed to be a family run place, and the atmosphere/guests were not touristy at all. Felt like an authentic Parisian dinner where the Parisians would eat. My favorite part of dinner was the bulldog (get it...le bouledogue!) started barking. Although I was happy when I got the check too...prices were reasonable.
