Henry's T.

Vegan Series, Part 4 So you're planning to go out for a meal with friends or family in Bend, Oregon. You realize that some of them are Vegan and some are not. Now what? Do you pick the Vegan place and ask those who are not of that persuasion to be adventurous on that particular occasion? Or perhaps you pick a place that has more traditional offerings and ask your Vegan friends/family to scour the menu for at least one suitable selection? Well imagine not having to ask either camp to sacrifice anything and going somewhere that offers a full menu that caters to everyone's preferences. How you ask? Take them to "Laughing Planet." Catering to the Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free, and Omnivore members of your tribe, I can't recall ever seeing such a comprehensively diverse menu. Not only are all the Vegan options clearly delineated on the menu, but all of the entrees can be made Vegan by simply omitting or substituting cheese for Vegan "cheese" and chicken or beef with organic tofu or tempeh (for no additional charge). No need to do any subbing when it comes to their chili or most of their soups because they are already Vegan. Does dessert sound good? Try their Double Chocolate, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, or Snickerdoodle cookies. We tried all 3, they were all good, and they were all Vegan. No matter your food preferences I hope that you have an affection for our planet and want to see it cared for and cherished. Well these folks sure see it that way. Every sale of a kid's smoothie results in a donation to the "Friends of Trees" organization that is helping to improve and restore the tree canopy in the Portland area by the planting of more than 900,000 trees and shrubs since 1989. That seems just all too fitting to me given that one of our responsibilities as adults is to leave this planet as an inheritance to our children in at least as good a condition as we received it. If you are like minded then you gotta love their saying, "There Is No Planet B." Laughing Planet is no joke and deserves a visit from you soon! And that's...Henry's Take. #veganlife #bendvegan #laughingplanet

Chips and salsa, tempeh burrito

Bright and quirky place with tons of vegan options. It's Mexican-inspired but definitely a "Pacific Northwest" kinda Mexican food, so don't go expecting Mexican food like what you would get in Texas or California. We got the chips and salsa to share, my mom got the crunchero quesadilla, and I got the tempeh burrito. My mom LOVED her quesadilla and the dip was flavorful too. Our chips and salsa were also very good. My tempeh burrito was a little more on the bland side but it was fine. I'm a bit picky about tempeh that tastes too "ferment-y" but I didn't notice that at all with my burrito. I will say it was MONSTER sized and therefore very messy. Everything was super filling and good value for money. Overall, we really enjoyed our food and the quirky decor (love the plastic dinosaurs on the tables -- we got triceratops!) Would definitely go back.

Delicious, healthy, and tasty... what more do you need? Their thai bowl is my favorite and their snickerdoodle cookie. Their bibimpap is pretty good as well. One of our other favorites is the chicken burrito made into a bowl. This place survived 2020 for good reason! They also usually have a coupon in the smart shopper for locals. Def a fav for those vegan and vegetarian dietary needs. For kids they have quesadillas and other healthy whole food kid options. One of our go to favorites in Bend and they have been here for at least 10 years

Love this place! Always happy to find a spot with tasty vegan options & laughing planet has lots... including desserts!!

deluxe vegan Bean & Cheese

Laughing Planet is literally my favorite spot in town. i usually hate burritos but the bean and cheese here NEVER disappoints, the vegan cheese is spectacular, the size and flavor is amazing and the house made gauc and salsas are 10/10.

Korean BBQ bowl

I've avoided Laughing Planet because of a perceived notion that it was strictly vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, what have you. Being an omnivore, such restaurants have little appeal. Although I will eat vegetarian meals quite often (rarely vegan), I like having meat options. And that's exactly what Laughing Planet offers, turns out. This is a fast casual, bus your own table joint. Order at the counter, get a number, the food comes out in short order. While I'm fine with fast casual, I'm not so enamored of the bus your own table thing. A lot of casual restaurants seem to be picking up on that unfortunate trend. Mind you, while I have no problem clearing the table, I find that some others really aren't very diligent about cleaning their mess. So the staff has to come by anyway. It's not a big deal - I'm just offering an opinion. Food: - SW green chile burrito, ordered deluxe (sour cream and guacamole added). Very good and very large. I ate it all but maybe I shouldn't have. My only complaint is that because the burrito is so big, it tended to lose structural integrity and I ended up using a fork. - Korean BBQ bowl with beef. Pretty decent and spicier than I had anticipated. But the sauce is not great - a little too acidic for my tastes and it certainly isn't Korean. Tons of broccoli included, which is a good thing. Condiments are available at the back left, which is where the bussing station is located. Leftover containers are there, too. Prices are reasonable, parking is sufficient, staff is friendly. And they have beer. Wifi, no password. You will, of course, want to grab a dinosaur or two to attend your table while you eat.

While we waited we had to try the flourless chocolate cake and Apple Cinnamon Cake, warmed up along side our cup of Joe. Ok so brace yourselves for this...the starter came out and was served to us by Chef Kamal and wasn't a disappointment on the eyes, crafted so delicately on the plate. The flaky filo was a golden hue and held a beautiful song inside of the most perfectly mix savory and sweet flavor, the duck was soft and tender, leaving you just wanted MORE!! I was pleasantly impressed with the way the dish was put together, each piece like a puzzle and this was just the starter. The mushroom toast arrived and she was the Belle of the Ball at our table, the side salad is a nice refreshing addition, but this crafted piece of art was stacked and piping hot, atop was a perfectly poached egg. Street Side Comfort Food Done Right at Zydeco…read more On a cool night in Bend, my family made a last-minute decision to grab dinner at Zydeco Kitchen & Cocktails, and honestly it turned into one of our favorite meals of the trip. We were lucky enough to snag one of the last available tables, outside no less, but the overhead heaters kept the patio perfectly warm and cozy. Sitting street side watching people wander through downtown Bend while enjoying good food and cocktails gave the whole evening a relaxed and memorable vibe. One thing worth noting: make reservations if you can. Even on a cooler weekday evening this place was absolutely packed, and after eating there it was easy to understand why. The vibe walks a fine line between upscale and approachable. Busy without feeling chaotic, energetic without being loud, and the kind of place where you can just as easily have a family dinner as a date night. Great spot for couples, groups, or even grabbing a seat solo at the bar. Pricing felt right in line with the quality of food, cocktails, and overall experience. We started with cocktails, and it was immediately obvious the bar team knew what they were doing. The espresso martini was smooth and rich without being overly sweet, the Buffalo Trace Old Fashioned was balanced and spirit-forward, and the dirty martini had this savory umami quality that gave it a deep earthy finish that lingered in the best way. For appetizers, the BBQ shrimp over the southern grit cake absolutely delivered. Rich, buttery, smoky, and packed with flavor. The Village Baker bread with olive oil and the cane syrup butter topped with flaky smoked salt was another standout. Based on how quickly the plates were cleaned off the table, I would say both were a unanimous success. For dinner, I ordered the smoked pork chop and it was excellent. Thick cut, juicy, perfectly cooked, and paired with a bright salsa verde that cut through the richness perfectly. The dirty rice underneath carried a ton of flavor and rounded the dish out nicely. My daughter ordered the crispy half chicken and here's the pro tip: order it early because they do run out. We were told there were only a few left for the evening. The skin was beautifully crisp while the chicken stayed incredibly juicy, and the mashed potatoes and asparagus were simple but executed really well. My son-in-law went with the steak frites and was more than happy with the choice. The steak had a great crust, was cooked exactly to temperature, and the rogue smoky blue butter melted right into the meat giving every bite extra richness. The fries were thin, crispy, and impossible not to keep stealing off his plate. We also shared the cornbread with homemade butter and, as we say back home in Hawaii, it was "broke da mouth" good. Moist, slightly sweet, crispy around the edges, and dangerously easy to keep eating. What really stood out to me was the pacing of the meal and overall hospitality. Nothing felt rushed even with a full house. Drinks came out quickly, plates were timed well, and the staff genuinely seemed proud of the food they were serving. We especially enjoyed chatting with our waitress after finding out she had lived in Hawaii for six years. As visitors from Hawaii ourselves, it instantly gave the night a little unexpected "home away from home" feeling that made the experience even more memorable. Those little moments are what separate a good restaurant from one you genuinely remember after the trip is over. Zydeco delivered the kind of experience that makes you immediately start talking about when you can come back. Great food, thoughtful cocktails, strong hospitality, and an atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile. Solid four-star experience and absolutely worth a stop if you are spending time in Bend.

I was served by a tall male bartender who was incredibly personable--we talked quite a bit, and honestly, I'd go back just for that experience alone.
