Only great nights at Jay's. I've been coming here for about three years. It's easily become one of my favorite dive/sports bars. All of the bartenders and staff are great people. I have mixed feelings about this place. The open backyard area is great. Music is usually pretty good. Bartenders are friendly. But the crowd can be hit-or-miss. I'm all for dive bars and the clientele they attract but... well, 90% of the people I've met here have been great. The staff is awesome... but bars like this seem to draw in a bunch of try-hards. You know the type... This bar is fun if you go with a group but it's not really a "dive bar" in the traditional sense. Feels like a regular bar role-playing as a dive bar. They serve Francis Coppola Sofia Mini Champagne Blanc de Blanc, my drink of choice when at this cozy spot. If it's a cold night, warm up in the back room by the wall sized screening of a blazing Yule log, a festive touch that made me smile. I live in Queens, but when I am in Billy Burg this is my go to bar any time of night. The bartenders are always super chill and nice, the price is right on the drinks. Tons of beer and shot specials (my favorite is Coors and Whiskey) and there is food every so often for free. Last night they had Williamsburg Pizza which is a clutch a move because pizza is out of this world. Backyard area is great too, well though out and just a beautiful space for sitting outside and enjoying a beer. It can get a bit smokey, but smokers have been fully banished throughout the city to hey, they need a place too. Only minor complaint is sometimes inside the music can be insanely loud, like hurt your ears loud. But that's really dependent on the bartender who tending. So is the mix of tunes - I've heard 80s hairbands to Johnny Cash, so really runs the gambit. I hope Lady Jay's stays in the hood as long as possible, but I fear development encroaching. If you're in the hood, stop by, it is worth a beer and a shot anytime! read more

Came here for a date on a Friday night. We got there around 9 and found a table outside on the back patio. Eventually the place got super crowded both inside and out, and it was a little hard getting to the bar for more drinks. However the back area is nice with different levels of the deck. The few times we went inside for drinks the music was playing, which you couldn't hear at all outside. My main complaint is that it was SUPER smoky outside. The bathrooms were also hard to get to because of how many people were standing outside the doors. All in all though it is a solid bar that I would return to because of the outdoor seating. read more

I really like this place a lot! I wound up here in NYE after dinner as we were bar hopping, waiting for our potential venue to officially open. With that being said, this place had the best music and was relatively close to where we found a parking spot. The music, played by DJ "Chic" Norris was great. It was a real smooth mix. I can't explain it...some old school Beyonce, a little hip hop, jazz, hipster vibes, funk, bohemian soul...the list goes on. While here I actually acquired a crazy level of insobriety (if that makes sense). I mean the drinks were REALLY strong. I had two shots- one was a house tequila mix shot, and the other was a pickle back (jame-0 + pickle juice); following those shots I had an LIT. Seriously that's all I needed for the whole entire night! The place had a great crowd too! Not so much mixed though. It was the typical Williamsburg crew plus some out of towners. I met a wonderful group of girls from New Orleans and chatted away the night as I was here. The event planner, and his boyfriend came up to us and totally made us feel welcomed in the bar and let us know where to go to find out about all the cool events they have going on periodically. All in all I had a great time. I would venture back here especially to pregame, but even just hang out if I want a semi low key night! read more

This is a really solid bar in Williamsburg. Now let me count the ways: 1) Most the beer prices are reasonable. The average craft beer here is $5-7, which considering how close this place is to the Williamsburg thoroughfare, is pretty decent. 2) The patio out back is big, especially for a bar this cozy. Bonus points for the comfortable wooden garden chairs, and the tables that are equally suitable for storing your beer or kicking back your feet. 3) The bartenders here are nice, down-to-earth, and attentive. That's not always the case unfortunately! So for these three reasons and more, Lady Jay's will be one of my standbys for my recommended Williamsburg bar crawl. read more

Came here for my birthday over the weekend (as did about 3 other people and their 6762354 friends - HI BIRTHDAY FRIENDS!!) and, while the space is awesome and the jukebox is possibly the best I've seen in the city in terms of "you cannot pick a bad song," the bartender was randomly a dick. Oh, and it sucks balls when you waste $5 on the jukebox and half your songs get arbitrarily cut off or skipped. Never mind the fact that (and this is not the bar's fault in any way) you're bound to get stuck in some long-ass line for the bathrooms, and some stumbling drunk ass clown will undoubtedly just try to cruise past all 12 people doing the pee pee dance and bust into the nearest bathroom. That's hilarious the first 3 times you almost witness/get involved in a fight, and then it's just stupid and makes me wish I had a stun gun or adult diapers or something. There are way too many laid back bars in the area for me to ever go back to one with some random dick bartender, bathroom traffic jams, and, regardless of its stellar song collection, a jukebox that screws you out of your jams/hard earned $5. A solid "meh," leaning dangerously toward "fuck this place." read more

Low key bar with celebrity owner. Or is it? I am surprised at how relaxed Lady Jay's is. I mean, it has all the right elements to be an overhyped, overblown place. For one, it's located near the Lorimer L stop, which is prime Williamsburg drink/nightlife-land. But oddly, it is so beyond-laid back, it's shocking. For two, its owner (and main bartender!) is no other than celebrity chef and NYMag poster boy, Sam Mason, who has his own TV show (Dinner with the Band) and was the lead chef of the love-it-or-hate-it-now-defunct Tailor in SoHo. Finally, the bar menu is short and sweet, with no crap and all quality, and at pretty amazing prices ($5 for a shot of whiskey and a beer of choice; $6 for local microbrews). If I could create my ideal life, it would perhaps entail owning a chill bar like this. Only I didn't do it. Sam Mason did. And it rocks. read more

I live in the neighborhood and at this point is my go-to for a relaxed nightcap, a beer in the afternoon, or meeting a group of friends on a Friday or Saturday night. Highlights include: -Large patio -Great juke box -Friendly/fast bartenders -Never too crowded, but bustling enough -Perfect lighting (I hate when it's too bright in a bar, but I also hate when you can't see your hand 3 inches from your face) - Perfect volume. You can have a conversation in this bar! Even when it's busy! Even on a Saturday! And it doens't feel dead due to LACK of volume, it just feels comfortable Great addition to the hood. read more

Do you ever get the feeling that New York is just one big amusement park? I've never been to the south, but I guess this is supposed to emulate the aura of a southern bar with its sorta bare and gritty decor, and dim yet neon lighting. This bar felt like the cowboy pit stop bar station of the New York City "world is in your palm" Park. Except that it's spankin' new with none of the "character" that comes with age for bars like these - as I would imagine. I have nothing against that, but it was just maybe slightly awkward for me to be in a neighborhood bar, where I felt like they had some Confederate flags stashed behind the bar. Also, bartender found a NYC lipstick left behind. If you're unfamiliar with the barbarity of the situation: if you're a chick, you need to reevaluate your choices. If you're a guy with a chick who wears NYC makeup, you need to leave that quickly. It is, otherwise, chilly chill. And if you're into a contrived setting for your contrived persona (and why wouldn't you be, this is Williamsburg), this is your bar. read more

A friend of mine invited me to come hang out one night, because they show old motorcycle style movies in their back yard... which is an awesome way to spend a summer evening. I never really made it back over to the area, until I ended up stopping by again Saturday afternoon to say hi to a friend who was DJing. It was nice to see a diverse crowd, enjoying the laid back country vibe coming from the speakers. I ran into some old friends which was nice, and a rather large birthday party came in, but didn't seem to take over the bar (which I feel happens a lot in bars.) This place seems to have a good selection of beers, good prices, an awesome juke box... back yard, friendly... cool movie nights, Dj's on saturdays... what more could you ask for? AAAANNNNDDD, the bartender was a total sweetheart, even though I bothered her with having to make red wine spritzers for me all afternoon -- most bartenders roll their eyes and just hand me a budweiser. read more

This is by far the best bar in East Williamsburg. The music is almost always good Rock N' Roll, the drinks are very reasonable, and the clientele are all to cool people who got priced out of the East Village/Lower East Side. With the perpetual closing of all the the Rock n' Roll dives in Lower Manhattan, this place has some silver lining. read more

My best friend used to live right above Hachi, and one night, hanging on the terrace, we wondered what was happening on the other side of the wall. Apparently, this new amazing bar had opened. I love the gigantic mirror and the smell of the "newness." They have lionshead (even though in a can) for a good price and theres a back patio for smokers. The bartenders are funny and super rad. They have a full bar and few beers on tap (enough to satisfy different palettes). Thats all I need to have, plus some good company. I strongly support this bar! read more

Best bar in Brooklyn. Always playing good music, always filled with cool people. Backyard area is big and beautiful. The attitude in this place is always positive! This place has one of the largest back patios I've been to in awhile, it's an all wooden, multi level design with lots of seating. That alone is worth a good rating. They also have a bowling type of game inside that I'll have to come back to check out. There's no food, I'm assuming you can bring your own but I haven't tested that out yet. Drafts are all $6 but their can and bottle prices are $3-5. Service was good and I had a good time here, it's definitely a place worth checking out, particularly if you like to have a drink outside and/or enjoy cheap cans of beer when you go out. read more

Quite possibly the BEST bar in Williamsburg!!! I stopped by Lady Jay's one evening pretty soon after it officially opened, and immediately fell in love! It definitely has the best Southern hospitality this side of the Mason-Dixon, from the super talented and super friendly bartenders (and I mean ALL of them!) to the diverse but comfortable crowd. Not to mention they have the BEST picklebacks around AND a Shuffle-bowl game!! I always joke that I live at this bar, but in all truth, it's a home- not just for someone who has been coming in here for years, but to anyone who walks in off the street as well. It's a no-nonsense, good dang bar. Don't come here for a cocktail- come here for a country tune on Sundays with John and a beer and shot, or the best (and strongest) $5 frozen margarita you'll ever have. Free pulled pulled pork sandwiches on Tuesday's with Kate. Golden tee and pinball if you get bored. Bottom line is this is a well-established neighborhood spot with a solid beer list and a friendly face to greet you at the door no matter what the day entails. read more

I actually like almost everything about this place. Can't go wrong with the Gansett tallboys. Owner seems like a good dude and most bartenders are generally friendly. They do seem to cater to their friends a bit though. I have to say the female brunette bartender is horrible though. Went in yesterday to grab a margarita and a tallboy. Ordered our drinks and tipped a buck a drink as usual. Once we got outside we found our margarita was mostly pineapple juice with a tiny bit of tequila in it. I usually consider returning a drink a pretty big douche move but my partner doesn't like pineapple juice and especially has no place in a margarita. I asked the bartender if she put pineapple juice in it and she looked at my like I was an idiot and said "yes! pineapple juice, triple sec and sour mix" as if it should have been completely obvious there is supposed to be pineapple juice in a f-ing margarita. I asked her to make me one without pineapple and she begrudgingly did so. Acted like it was a huge pain in the ass. Other than that, in general she acts like she's doing everyone a huge favor by simply having to do her job. Totally typical Williamsburg hipster attitude of not caring about your job. It would be nice to have real bartenders work there and not just a 'cute' girl with a shitty attitude and no bartending skills. read more

due to scheduling, or maybe due to the fact that i do enjoy having a repeat performance at a bar, i was here twice on one night. the thing is, i loved it when it was just me, my girls and a couple other people and i still loved it when i came back to meet people after dinner. the crowd was a bit thicker, but the bartenders were still pleasant. i must say that the afternoon guy is a sweetheart and a half, but the later night guys were busier, and i think charged me $1 more. i'll let that slide. it's a good spot. read more

went here for a friend's birthday this weekend. they have two-for-$5 lionshead, which i thought was a pretty good bargain. unfortunately, the service isn't so hot. i waited at the bar about 5 minutes while one guy cleaned glasses and ignored everyone (i figured he was a barback) and another lady got into an argument with a visibly drunk guy. i figured he was giving her a hard time at first, but soon it became clear that he was trying to close his tab for a while and she was being unreasonably slow about it. after he finally settled and left, she still kept putting a finger up like "one minute" to the growing crowd waiting for service at the bar, and then left. i guess her shift was over. at this point, the guy who was cleaning glasses took over, because he must have been a bartender after all...? another guy joined him behind the bar later and the two of them were much better team, so maybe i just showed up at a bad time. either way, it shouldn't ever take over 15 minutes to get a can of beer at a bar. service aside, this place has a great backyard! it's a big deck with chairs and benches. i'm told the jukebox is good as well, but i didn't spend a lot of time inside. this place is good for cheap drinks and lounging around outside (if the bartenders are working), but i'd probably opt to go half a block to bushwick country club instead. read more
