We went here after hearing it would be a 45 minute wait at the popular place across the street. I read the Yelp reviews so I felt comfortable using this place as a backup. (We were traveling through town and needed to stop for dinner in Williamsburg.). WRONG! There were about 3 tables eating when we arrived. It took awhile for the waitress to take our order but we were talking anyway until we realized it had been awhile. The food is just average at best. Coming from Las Vegas, this place wouldn't even be in the top 20. We had the fajitas, tamale, enchiladas and chili relleno. The chili relleno was served differently from what I have been served. It was alright. I prefer the battered and fried way with the sauce but. . . . I attached a picture. I wouldn't return if I lived here. The food was perfect and served without a long wait. I had the Durango fajita (carnitas, shrimp, chicken and steak). My kids had Dino nuggets, cheese quesadilla and shrimp tacos. Bottled Jarritos for those who know. The guacamole and salsa were delicious to include the beans and rice. Don't mind scooping those warm chips into one of these four. This is an authentic restaurant that serves the best food. Start with the warm plentiful basket of chips. Light and warm. The salsa is very flavorful. Not too spicy but not bland. Perfect. My husband and I have been here twice, first just the two of us and the second time with out-of-town relatives. I know it's a chain but we think the food is much better than most chain Mexican restaurants. Two of us ordered regular taco salads and two ordered chicken and steak fajita taco salads. All were very fresh and delicious! I would like to try other items on the menu, but the fajita taco salad was so good, it'll be hard for me to choose something else! We were a bit disappointed with our first experience here last night (especially given the overall 4 star rating). We ordered fajitas, chori pollo, guac, and a kids meal. The chips and salsa were mediocre, but the guacamole was below average. Almost no avocado mixed with a bit much tomato and cilantro. Very disappointing at 7$. Fajitas were good! Accompanying beans were hopelessly over cooked and pasty. Chori pollo was good as well, but the side of rice and beans lacked flavor. The kids meal was boxed max and cheese and frozen French fries. Again, just ok at 4$. We think the meal would be fine at a $25-30 range, but not at the $45(after tax and tip). Service and cleanliness was average. Overall, we would not plan to go again. read more

My husband and I had lunch at the 135 2nd street location. Williamsburg has quite a few Mexican restaurants. This was our first time at this restaurant. It was nice atmosphere. I thought this is our new "go to" place for Mexican cuisine. NOT. The food was good. But our taco shell of our tacos were stale. Our server was so nice and told the manager. He came up to our table very annoyed. He brought two taco shells (not the tacos just the shells) to us and made us feel like WE did something wrong! My take away from this experience is never going there again! I will go to Plaza Aztec from here on in! read more

The food was good, definitely not the best I've had but the service was simply not the greatest. The server/manager/owner (not sure who he was) just did not like us asking any questions to him. The place was pretty empty and he also didn't seem very nice about us asking if we could sit at a booth instead of a table. Definitely not pleasant, friendly or professional of a person. There were also not many vegetarian options to choose from and that is surprising for a Mexican place. I hesitated to ask the guy if they could make my dish vegetarian as he didn't seem willing or nice. Yum! Had three a la cart hard shell chicken tacos and they were scrumptious! Came in during an off time and had the place to ourselves. Well if this where the locals go to eat according to other reviews then I feel sad for them. First the fact that chips are not complimentary after 2 baskets is downright "cheap." The salsa was one of the few things that had any flavor. I order the Mexican special which was huge but had no flavor. There was supposed to be two different types of nachos but all I got was wet tortillas covered in lettuce and meat. I had to eat the tamale with guacamole in order to give it any flavor...and I hate guacamole! The beans tasted and looked like dry paste. Our service was lacking at best. After ordering, we received our food hot which was a plus but we we not checked on once. I had to chase down my server and get her to give me the check. Needless to say the next time we are in Williamsburg, we will not be visiting here! I pity you locals. read more

This place only get a single star because the food is decent. Their morality and customer service however, are horrible. I'll expand with on this review in more detail once I have a chance to sit behind an actual keyboard, but for now: DO NOT order takeout from this restaurant, especially through ANY online ordering system. Unless that is, you enjoy your order being wrong, them attempting to charge you more money when you arrive to pick up your food, having to argue with an unprofessional manager about it, having them fraudulently place an additional charge to your card that you did not sign for after you leave, and then having them lie about it when you call them to ask why they illegally charged you more even after admitting that it was their own mistake, all over a couple of dollars that was due to THEIR incompetence! We even tipped them more than the discrepancy was, on a takeout order! Needless to say, we won't be going back or ordering from this place ever again. And I will damn sure make sure no one I know ever does either. Honestly the worst customer service I have ever seen. Stay away. read more

I really like coming to La Tolteca for a few reasons. First:: Good food. The food tastes fresh and is well seasoned. I really enjoy my meals here. Second: I like their location. They are just far enough away from the college and the tourist area to keep it from getting too crowded and over run. I started coming over 10 years ago and I will keep coming back. read more

We had an extremely yummy meal here after a long day at Busch Gardens. We were there late, around 8 PM, but we were welcomed happily and service was excellent. They served crispy, warm tortilla chips, with excellent salsa as we sat down. We probably could've just had those as a meal! We had carnitas enchipoladas, tacos al pastor, huge filled quesadillas and tierra y mar. All of them were fresh, filling and tasty. The quesadillas were pretty basic, but the carnitas and al pastor were really good. This is good Mexican food. We are from NYC originally, and have had plenty of real Mexican. You'll enjoy this place! The service was attentive, maybe not overly friendly, but nothing to gripe about. The prices are very affordable (especially compared to other options in the area) and we left with full bellies and smiles. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area! read more

Atmosphere: 4/5. Decor is cheery and seemed clean, although I didn't visit the restroom. Noise level was just right. Seats more guests than you'd expect from the outside of the building. Food: 4/5. Over 150 menu options, many of which were more unique than other Mexican restaurants' offerings (e.g., tilapia with mango salsa). Choosing was difficult, but I settled on the chicken enchiladas verde and would recommend it. Big chunks of chicken and just the right balance of flavors in the salsa verde--very fresh-tasting. The guacamole salad was also good. Everyone at our table liked what they ate. Minus one star for the chips--I've had better elsewhere, and no one can touch Chevy's salsa in my book. Service: 5/5. Wait staff completely unphased by our large party. All the orders came out correct. No wait time upon arrival. Chips and drink refills arrived without asking. Kid-friendly--nice activity menu, although the children wanted more than two crayons. Price: 5/5. One of the cheapest meals we ate on this trip, and for some of the best food, too. read more

Cheese sauce sounded like something you put on your nachos, but again, was perfect on my pork enchiladas.
