Great atmosphere. Lively, welcoming, an easy place to sit and enjoy a meal with friends and family. The service was amazing from start to finish. The food itself was a bit of a mixed bag. The main dishes were definitely underseasoned, which was disappointing (veggie fajita. Maybe if I got meat it would have been better but I was on a Daniel fast). That said, the homemade hot salsa absolutely slapped. Easily the highlight of the meal. It carried a lot of the experience. I would come back for the atmosphere, the salsa, and the service. Plaza Azteca is a Mexican restaurant located near the Movie Tavern and the wonderful Wagster's Magic Show in Williamsburg. It's a great spot to have a meal before or after going to either of those entertainment venues. The restaurant is large with a mixture of tables and booths. The staff are friendly and efficient. They even have a robot that transports the food from the kitchen to your table. It's very cute. Their menu has a lot of options, and we enjoyed our selections. I had the Chicken Fajita Salad. It came with three nice size pieces of lightly seasoned chicken breasts, lettuces, cheese, tomatoes, and avocados. The portion was large, and I took about one-third of it home. My husband likes combo plates, so he got one that had refined beans, rice, and three different enchiladas. While it too was a large portion, he devoured it and it raves about the quality of the food. As with other Mexican restaurants , they bring complimentary chips and salsa to the table. For drinks, I had the red sangria, which was light. He had the horchata, which he rated ok. Still a solid choice for good Mexican food in Williamsburg. Very generous portions with enough for multiple meals for my family at least. Last time tried the pineapple fajitas and they were delicious. Served in a pineapple and I got just chicken. I got the cheese sauce on the side and the rice was so light and fluffy! Really wasn't happy with the food. My taco salad was burnt tortilla with what tasted like hamburger helper and extra water on the bottom, with lettuce, sour cream, and a sprinkle of cheese on top. Only ate a few bites. My husband said his was fine, and my kid didn't like their burritos left half of it. read more

An impulsive turn that worked out well. At the end of a busy day we were looking for someplace to eat but not really knowing what we wanted. We were mostly past those place and decided to turn around, we needed a respite and 'maybe' a cold drink before looking for place to eat. Mexican was not the menu, but a cold beer for me (I enjoy trying new varieties even knowing I will never remember the names, plus are local only) That and the 'chips and dip' invited us in. There were very few people inside as we were in the gap between lunch and dinner. So we we sat, and visited concerning where we had been and what to try and do before time to leave the area. We were asked more than once about ordering dinner and each time put them off. Finally, it was time to decide to remain sitting or look elsewhere. We decided to have dinner an we were glad we did. The food was very good and the service was excellent. We both had chimichanga but one beef and the other chicken. As we were finishing I asked her, would you come bak here? Her answer was a strong "Yes", followed by comparisons with similar places 'back home'. We were of similar opinions, this place would very favorably compare to other restaurants we frequent. It wasn't the best, but, a very close 2nd and the difference we agreed on was strictly a personal opinion. Based on this, two opinions, we both recommend this as a welcome place to relax, enjoy the chips and dip ( well about average) and if you choose to eat dinner. You will enjoy a good meal. read more

Plaza is regional chain Mexican restaurant. We go here for the margs, since the food is about the same with every other Mexican place. It's best to go during off hours as sometimes the service can be slow. Typically if you can beat the dinner rush your food will be a little fresher and hotter. We usually go between 5 & 5:30 pm. The appealing thing during busier times is a robot waiter that resembles a cat. This is great for kids to entertain them and definitely is a talking point for the remainder of the night. Excellent Mexican / Tex-Mex option if you are hungry and in the Williamsburg area. I came here with family to celebrate a kid's birthday dinner. The place was relatively empty on a Saturday, but we came a couple of hours before closing and Williamsburg in general isn't that busy in the mall/restaurant area. This place was clean and the staff was quick. The food was delicious and we even got to see their robot deliver the food which was unexpected. I think it's only a matter of time when robots do everything in restaurants, but that is another topic. Overall, great drinks and great food. Stopped in for some lunch early dinner before heading to our vacation village resort stay. Began with chips n salsa-yellow corn chips n salsa with large pieces of onion and cilantro. I ordered the taco salad-small hand size bowl with beans, chunks of tender chicken, lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream. At first, didn't care for the liquid in bowl, mixture of beans and not drained chicken, but became delicious as I ate through it. My husband ordered empanadas 4 nice sized ones, 2 chicken n cheese and 2 ground beef n cheese. Tasty but too much for one person, took half home. It's good, but I can't give five stars. I enjoy the chimichangas rice and beans. The fajitas - not good. They cut the meat into small strips and then cook the hell out of it so it has no moisture whatsoever. Further, they do not fry their own taco shells - they use pre-made ones. (I asked first and therefore did not order.) Imagine, a Mexican food restaurant not even cooking their own tortillas. I was in town visiting my grandmother and we decided we were in need of some yummy Mexican food. So we got all dressed up (because why not?!) and went to Plaza Azteca. Everyone there was so very kind to her and gracious with the extra time she needed to get seated and figure out what she wanted to eat. Met friends and was disappointed from the start. It seems like every time we visit the restaurant there are numerous employees hanging around the host station and we have to pick our way through as we're led to the table. Don't they have something to do? Our server arrived quickly and took drink/food orders. She was friendly and while we had some communication challenges, the order arrived as ordered. The food was sent to the table via a robot. While an entertaining gimmick I suppose, the robot moves through the dining room with music blaring loud enough to make it a real distraction to diners looking to enjoy a meal. My Fajita Taco Salad was the smallest I've had as the shell was literally 1/2 the size usually presented at local competitors. I was warned the dish was "very hot." It was not. In fact, the steak topping the salad was plentiful but only slightly above room temperature. Does anyone check this stuff before it leaves the kitchen? Anyway, our friendly server raised the experience to "2 Stars." There are better Williamsburg Mexican food options available with much better value. Of course, if your interest is based on robot- assisted food service, you'll be in the right place at Plaza Azteca. We came 20 minutes upon opening and the customer service left a lot to be desired. The bartender had a little attitude. My Afro Cuban husband came in speaking Spanish to them and the bartender refused to speak back in Spanish even though we heard her speaking Spanish to other workers. The front house guacamole was delicious and they make it in front of you. They had bartender drinks of the day. Green tea was delish but the candy shot was nasty. Horchata gave me life!!! Food was terrible & Service was below average. My kids ordered a quesadilla and all 3 of them were soggy. You could not even hold them up, and the waitress said it was normal, due to the chicken. The queso fundido was terrible, the meat was undercooked and over seasoned. It was a ball of grease. Our server unfortunately was lost and did not even bring water, plates or silverware to our table, even after asking. They had this table side guacamole and a lady came out with a cart to make the guacamole fresh and right in front of us which was a very nice surprise. As we are from out of town, we trusted the online reviews only to be disappointed. We ordered the table side guacamole, which was good (but we were surprised at the request for tips). And then I ordered the Seafood Enchiladas. I figured in Virginia there is an abundance of blue crab, so it must be delicious. Was I wrong! The shrimp were few and the crab???? was some imitation square cubes of mush. Not good at all. Very disappointed. Will not go back or recommend. read more

I took my daughter here on our visit to Williamsburg for her soccer tournament. The food was delicious! I ordered the Texas Fajitas and it was cooked perfectly and a very generous portion. I had enough leftover for lunch the next day. My daughter ordered the steak tacos as well as queso. She loved it! The food was 5 stars! The reason I gave 4 stars was because was that our booth was super uncomfortable, staff was not friendly at all and the prices were a bit high. Our booth was like sitting on a sponge and it was far from the table. The waiter and hostess almost seemed irritated with us. They were very busy and most likely short staffed and it was a Friday night so I assume they were just overwhelmed. The food was good quality but pricey. Our meal was $60 with a 20% tip for two people. We didn't get drinks, just two entrees and one appetizer. This place is my homey Mexican spot. Every time I come home, I must come here. Honestly it's the white dip. When you get chips and salsa, ask for the white dip. Then you want to dip your chip into BOTH the salsa and the white dip so you get a little of both on the same chip. It's a game changer and all I crave! I also love the fajita salad. We usually love everything but last night we had terrible, terrible service. The food was good and hot but we never got drink refills, never received the cheese dip. We're a vegan family of 4 and we love Mexican food. This was an absolutely perfect dinner. We tried the vegan tacos, vegan bowl, and vegan burrito, and we were thrilled! Server said both black and refried beans were vegan, and we were served white rice which I gather means the mexican rice has chicken stock (just a guess). Azteca Salad! This was supposed to be a salad not a soup. Altho they were very generous with the chicken, mushrooms and shrimp the salad had no flavor. I personally wouldn't serve a to go salad with hot chicken/shrimp on top. The lettuce was really warm and all the extra water was not what I wanted for dinner.
