Enjoyed Birria tacos for lunch which is the restaurant's popular dish. Unfortunately I bit into a sizable piece of fat which I had to spit out as it was about the size of 1" cube. The rest was delicious especially the dip that was served with this entree. Their rice was plentiful and tasty as it wasn't dry like in some places where it has been sitting out for too long. Beans were served as well. Service was stellar as Isaiah helped to get a Birria tacos order to go as well so I could bring it back to my Hubs. First time here for me but I will be back as the lunch specials listed on the very back page of the extensive menu was great. Chile rellinos will likely be my next order or maybe fried Chimichanga. Food was decent. Stopped by a nearby brewery who recommended Plaza Azteca for food and said we could order online and they would walk it over. We ordered online and saw a 20 minute wait. Waited 45 minutes- then walked over, they said they lost the order and asked us to wait "5-10" more minutes. Then they said they wouldn't walk it over, I had to wait. I asked for a free beer while I waited for them to correct the mistake(4.99), and the guy laughed and said I could have a water. Good thing we had to tip before the food- obviously would have been 0 for a pick up that was ok at best. I would rather do Jose Tequila down the road all Day. read more

Nothing makes getting suckered into a 4 hour long timeshare presentation then stumbling upon a Plaza Azteca. Fun fact: one of my favorite places to eat in college was plaza Azteca + I always made it a point to have some whenever I was back in town. I've been in the DC area for 7 years + nothing has been able to come close. Imagine our surprise knowing it's one in VA with a similar , if not the same menu! I had the spinach & chicken enchiladas without the sauce, but with queso in top instead. Trust me, it's delicious. The enchiladas were perfectly flavored and the rice was as well. We had the table side guacamole which could have had a bit more flavor, but A for effort. The staff was great + I'm already awaiting my next visit! read more

Birthday get together for a friend; and nothing says party like Mexican food! This was not my first time here, so I already knew that the coffee is good and the tortilla chips are fresh, hot, and tasty. The salsa is delicious; not as hot as I like it, but tasty enough that I can forgive it. My Burritos Deluxe were excellent- a chicken burrito and a beef burrito served with rice; I didn't get the beans because I knew from long experience that my Son and Heir was never going to eat his. And he didn't. But there was no way I was getting my hands on his chimichangas without him going all Deadpool on me. He assures me that they were delicious- tender beef, light and creamy cheese, crisp tortillas. The rice, he says "was mediocre," but I thought it was fine. My Bride's Burrito Mex "was yummy! I ate the whole thing!" My Progeny is sixteen, so naturally he had room for the Churro Cup Ice Cream- "a cinnamon-sugar churro filled with ice cream and decorated with drizzle and toppings." We were pretty full, so we split a flan. It was the surprise hit of the evening. So rich! So thick! The texture was astounding, the flavour intense. Next time I will probably just have flan and coffee for supper. I'm an adult; I can if I want to! Supper with 2 fountain drinks, a coffee, and two desserts for the three of us came to $55.72. Some friends of mine from the area said I just HAD to try this Mexican place and to ask for the "white salsa" with our chips. So, we all loaded up in the family van and headed over after a morning at Historic Jamestown. First up: Service. Well, they can't all be winners. Our server was dubbed "the coke waitress" because no matter what we asked for, she would refill C's half-full drink and not bring anything else. She also never asked if she could get us anything except for when we were ordering. We asked for extra chips, salsa, and napkins and they never materialized. It also took over 30 minutes to receive our food and our youngest's food didn't come out. Oh well. She did make sure we were brought an extra plate for the meal C and I split and that E got her kids meal, so she was redeemed a bit there. But she seemed a little absent-minded or indifferent. Next: Food! When we were seated, we were brought fresh chips and salsa. They were really good. The salsa was light and spicy - perfect for the filling chips. We were told to ask for the "white salsa" by some friends of ours. I don't really know why. It's tasted a little like tartar sauce. I actually kind of liked it mixed with the regular salsa, but I probably would get it again. We also ordered the queso and it was great- white queso with a kick to it. Pa and my kids ate it up. Then came the entrees! This is where Plaza Azteca shines. Pa got the lunch special #3. It came with a taco, burrito, and rice. He was super impressed. The rice was perfectly cooked and he basically sang an aria about the cheese on the burrito. G got the OMG Nacho and she inhaled it. My girl loves nachos, just like her mom. And she loved these so much. They were piled high with meat, cheese, and toppings. E got the kids enchilada, the same thing she gets at every Mexican restaurant, ever. She said it was better than her favorite restaurant, so it was good, peeps. C and I split the seafood chimichangas. And JFC. I could eat this every day. Every. Single. Day. It was filled with lobster bisque, topped with huge shrimp, and it tasted like a mermaid's dream. The food was stellar. Except the white sauce. Pa is still shuddering from that experience. TL;DR: All of the food was great, but the service left something to be desired. If you have a good server, this could easily be a five-star place. Get something you think you'd like as everything we had a great. I was excited to see that the menu had a vegan/vegetarian section, even though we went with seafood and if we get the chance to come back, I'll probably try something from there. read more

We go in early on a Tuesday; we think we're avoiding the crowd, but wrong. They have a large party and the wait is 25 minutes. I stuck with it because the restaurant was close to the movie theater we were going to patronize. Not only did they keep their word and get us seated in 25 minutes, but the service and food came at us right away. So I can say that I've been here when they're very busy, and testify that they are prompt, pleasant, and provide plenty of fresh, tasty food. My wife had the enchiladas, and I ordered the "Pollo Patron". Really great food, and the waiter got everything right. This place is not meant for cheap diners, but it is reliable and worthy of recommendation. read more

This is one of our main go to places for Mexican food. The staff is always delightful, the food is among the best in Williamsburg. There are other places that we like a little bit better than Plaza Azteca however most of them are not as consistent as this place. The margaritas are wonderful and the prices are low to mid range which makes them even more attractive. They were one of the places that we visited when Covid started and I felt that they had a great handle on how to keep people safe with their food handling techniques. I ordered steak fajitas & apparently they don't come w/lettuce anymore. I asked for some lettuce & by the time I got it the fajitas weren't hot anymore. I thought that we was going to have the best dinner after seeing that they had carnitas infused with garlic. Sounds great right NOPE!! The carnitas are suppose to be fried and the fat is suppose to be the amazing apart but that was jiggly and I was not happy!! Oh and the appetizers were a throw off...empanadas how can u go wrong right...you can it tasted like no Hispanic made it I was so upset...I'm Hispanic I expected something way different than cheesy beef and chicken pot pie empanadas...that is not original empanadas!!! This is nothing like before. I was there on Tuesday, June 30, 2022, with my family. The food was the worst. They gave us all a big plate of rice and meat with nothing else. I m not sure if they have changed the cook or management. We were not able to eat the food. Just rice and meat. The presentation of the food was bad. I mean, bad ... A big plate of yellow rice with whatever type of meat you ordered... The meat, was placed on top of the yellow rice... Big disappointment.. We're big fans of Mexican food - so we've been to a few and know what to look for. The make or break in Mexican food is fresh ingredients and this place has it! They start with salsa and chips. The salsa has a ton of fresh cilantro and has very good flavor. I asked for the hot version and was pleased to get a habanero based salsa. We then ordered table side guac and was treated to having it made right in front of us... avocado, cilantro, lime, onions/tomatoes and salt very yummy! For dinner, I went with seafood chimichanga - chock full of lobster and shrimp and covered with cheese sauce. My wife got chicken burritos ... we both loved our meals. Hubby ordered the Baja fish tacos and I ordered the birria tacos and we each swapped a taco. Having grown up eating Baja fish tacos, this was so far removed from what a Baja fish taco should be. According to the menu the fish was coated in a light near batter that I was unable to detect. They came with what was supposedly a garlic lime sauce that was the color and consistency of dish water and for the life of me I could not find any flavor to it. The fish itself was dry. My birria tacos looked good on the plate but had absolutely no flavor even with the dipping sauce. I'm Mexican and grew up eating and cooking amazing food and this food was not it. The quality did not even come close to justifying the price tag. I will stick with Taco Mexicali and Taqueria Maria Bonita for my Mexican fix. read more

Decided to give this location a try during our Williamsburg getaway as Plaza Azteca has never disappointed us. The location is great and the inside is very inviting and clean. I was pleased to see when we came in the lunch special, "buy one lunch special get another half off". After seeing that sign we knew we would be ordering something off the lunch menu and it did not disappoint! We both decided on the Burrito San Jose, burrito stuffed with several different types of meat with rice and bean, topped with pico de gallo, sour cream and a cheese sauce. My first visit and was very impressed with the food and staff. My mother lives in Williamsburg and when visiting we go out to eat on a regular basis, and wish I would have visited this restaurant sooner. Maria our waitress was pleasant and attentive. We ordered empanadas for appetizer and the dough was flaky and the filling tasty. Being that there was only two of us, and the order included four nice size empanadas with guacamole and salsa, we took half home. So, we frequent this place often and we love it, 2nite we went again and I forgot my one complaint about it. I ordered the taco salad and when I received I realized it was only in a six inch tortilla deep fried shell. I have asked about this b4 with no adequate response. Price on the taco salad was about 8 dollar for which I would expect a 10 inch shell, the meat and beans on the taco was adequate but there was very little lettuce. We like going to Plaza mostly because of the outdoor area. Lately they have had some live musicians who were really good. Sadly the outdoor area has become loaded with ants, on chairs, tables, near food, and biting us. Just left with many ant bites, not fun. Also the service is just plain bad... Orders wrong, no attention to drink refills, ask for things never received (I asked for lemons 3 times and nada, we asked for napkins and utensils so many times I finally went in and got them myself). At the end of the night I did tip 20% with cash, but paid the bill on the card, to find out a few days later when the transaction posted, that I had another 20% added on the bill. This was a table for 3, not a big party where they can add gratuity. I did not get a pen when I received my card back, so I wasn't able to sign it at that moment, but I took my card back and left the cash tip inside. On my way out I asked the server for a pen, and signed it at the bottom, without writing "cash" under the tip line or writing the total again on the bill. If I didn't know how much the bill was, I would of been "wrongfully" and "by mistake" charged another 20% I figured it out and tries to call them and fix it over the phone, but nobody ever picked up the phone for a few days in a row, when I was calling and calling again. I had to go back inside the restaurant one other day, ask for the manager, explain, wait for them to check it, of course they found it, there wasn't any sign of me paying some extra tip on the card, and of course there was no logic explication out of them, just "we don't know what's happening" and I had my money returned.
