A group of four of us enjoyed dinner at La Tolteca. This was our first visit. The restaurant is larger than it looks from the outside. They have several rooms with booths and tables for groups or other diners. Like with most Mexican restaurants, service began with chips and salsa. We ordered the Happy Hour Lime Margarita and the Horchata. Both were very good -- especially the margarita, which wasn't too sweet or syrupy. It was delicious. For dinners, we had the Burrito Azteca with chicken, steak, black beans, and rice and the Deluxe Burrito. Both were very good. Portions were large and prices were good. Two of us with our meals and drink came to $40 before tax and tip. Service was accommodating and efficient. Parking is available in their own lot off Richmond Road. read more

Saw that they were doing a pina colada flight and wanted to try for my birthday! Piba Colada flight was delicious and fun! Chips and salsa were good and the famous VA white sauce was okay. Not my favorite of the ones I tried. Lunch sized portions were still large and the chicken chimichanga and the San Jose burrito we ate was very good. Service was a little slow but there was only one waitress, and she did handle the 6 lunch tables well. Inside they have booths and tables as well as a bar area. This smaller Mexican spot was just what I was craving! Warm lightly salted tortillas with salsa were delivered to my table instantly. The server's warm smile was just a nice as the chips!! Soft Mexican music played in the background, and the whole place was festively decorated with colorful chairs, murals, piñatas, parrots, geckos, cactuses, and Spanish tile... perfect setting! Let's taco bout the food! The carnitas street tacos were calling my name... they came 4 on a platter, small soft corn tortillas topped with cilantro and onion with a wedge of lime, I added some melted queso and black beans. The pork was amazing! Mildly seasoned and juicy! The black beans and rice were flavorful and cooked well! I feasted to my heart's content! Since previous owner change staff has been completely changed, service quality is 1/10 food quality has significantly gone down and food is under cooked and not warm..... Drink quality especially alcoholic has gone downhill. Margaritas are watered down and not good by any means. Recommend staying home and making tacos rather than what used to be TACO TUESDAY. Prices have gone up and new owner seems incompetent he watches his staff get ran like it's nobody's business. 1/10 recommend Plaza or even driving to Chihuahuas in Newport News is better than here. I passed by this restaurant almost weekly and have always wanted to try it out. I've heard great things about the food and the customer service. Came in on a Friday afternoon and was able to order some things from the happy hour menu. The draft beers are $3 and the margaritas (frozen or on the rocks) were $4. They give you chips and salsa on the house. We asked for hot sauce and the waitress had asked if we wanted hot salsa, and we said sure! The hot salsa was good but we didn't know it was an extra cost until the bill came--which isn't a big deal, but I feel like that should've been mentioned when it was offered to us. I've tried the chimichangas, enchilada suprema special, la Tierra y mar. I like trying the specials and hope to try everything they have. It's decent food, maybe not the best I've ever tasted. I got the enchiladas verdes, the sauce did taste sweet and I think I would have liked it it the food was warmer. I got the skinny margarita which was good. Food was very good, we just moved here and we're having a very hard time finding a Mexican restaurant similar to what we were use to. This was perfect everything was good. My husband got the enchiladas with chipotle sauce and he said they were delicious but very hot! Their ground beef mixture is very tasteful, so many restaurants do not season their ground beef enough, this was very good. Rice and beans were on point as well. The cheese dip was excellent! Update 2/18/20 Once again, we came to La Tolteca and had an amazing dinner. Maria "Bonita" was our server and she did an amazing job tonight with our table. She was fast to get us our happy hour drinks...tequila sunrise.....nice and the blue drink, very pretty! We ordered some quacomole to start with the chips and salsa. For dinner, we hit it on the head. I had the Grande special....2 played of food, amazing!!!! We also had the fajitas, tacos and borchetta which was grilled chicken and steak with peppers onions, tomatoe and quac, which were all amazing. Maria was awesome, the food was awesome and the pricing is just too amazing. We got lucky because we originally went to go eat italian at a local place but they were too busy, so we decided to gi to La Toltecca.....boy we were all glad we did. Had the chance to order food from here via Uber. It was prepared in a timely manner and packaged well for delivery. Arrived still warm and fresh tasting. My husband says the chips that came with it were perfectly cooked - nice and crisp and a fresh salsa that came with it which I enjoyed. The salsa wasn't overpowered with onions and herbs, so it was definitely something I would eat again. I ordered the burrito grand - the zesty green sauce was a great addition. The steak inside was tender and not overly dry like I typically find at Mexican places. The combination of rice, meat, sour cream, lettuce, and sauce was delicious and like a flavor party in my mouth. I am not normally a huge fan of Mexican food but this hit the spot and I would order it again. I only had a bite of my husband's chori pollo but it was good. He says it was great, and the chicken was well cooked. Overall, we were pleased with the experience and the portions were enough to leave us very full at the end of the meal. We will be back, especially when places open up again and we can sit and enjoy our meal freshly cooked in the restaurant. read more

I'll tell you that the tolteca pork enchilada is delicious. The pork is cubed, so meh BUT the sauce is amazing. That green enchilada sauce is so good i can understand why my dad wanted to come back here after ordering that his first time. Everything else though was a disappointment. Steak/chicken/shrimp fajitas had no flavor. And the worst offense of all; the cheese they use in the quesadillas and everything else is AMERICAN CHEESE. Gross. It tasted nasty so i asked her why type of cheese it was and she came back with the actual box. Gross gross gross. read more

We had just finished a very long day at Water Country, and wanted to eat close. This little place came up with excellent reviews so we gave them a shot. Wow! Absolutely delicious, and very affordable. The chorizo and cheese dip is outstanding. I had the carnitas which were equally good. My friend ordered the 32 oz margarita which was huge. My wife ordered the enchiladas which were great. Having my nephews along, dessert was a must. They had the fried ice cream which was decadent, and I had the flan which was terrific. This story has to be told I ordered some Mexican food from La Tolteca and had door dash bring it to me I have ordered from La Tolteca many times in the last 25 years I have ordered from both places, and it has always been good this time it was not .So I called Jose and told him in a very nice way that my order was not good, and he said no problem I will get you another and I said thank you I then told him that I could not pick it up today and he said just call any time and ask for me and I will take good care of you I said thanks and that was that. I few days later I called, and he said ok come get your order I thanked him and went to pick up my order. Well, when I got there, he says I do not know you all you are doing is trying to CON me out of a free meal and puts his hand in my face and keeps shaking his finger at me. I got upset and let him know he was wrong and why are you treating me this way he said something else like I hope you enjoyed the free food. Now this is the bad part they loaded up my meal with so much cayenne pepper on it that that it made me sick. People this is not right all I did was order a meal and I got all of this does Jose not know if you spike an 80-year-olds food with that much cayenne it could Kill them. Delicious food, friendly staff, and great drinks. What more could you ask for when you go out to eat mexican food. I was in love with the decor, how it felt like someones home, and how it was very inviting. Okay, I wasn't such a fan of La Tolteca. The salsa was more like tomato sauce. When I asked for a spicy salsa it was just gross. Fajitas were good at best. Service was slow slow and poor. I have had much better Mexican food at other restaurants!!! read more

Considering my roots in Tex-Mex, this place was a good fix! My mom and I stopped in searching for a hot spot outside of Texas. And it's actually pretty damn good! We loved the hot cheese and bean dip. (Not quite queso, but a tasty alternative!) Th carne asada is a little dry, but very flavorful. We were also quite impressed by the enchilada sauce. Loved the ambiance. Very colorful and vibrant just like Mexico. Ashley was very quick and friendly as well! I will definitely be back to explore more of the menu. read more

Stopped here for dinner after spending the day at Colonial Williamsburg. We stayed at the Quality Inn right next door. We originally wanted to go to Captain George's Seafood at the other side of the hotel, but they were overpriced and closing soon by the time we got there. Fortunately, La Tolteca was a great alternative. The drinks and dishes were tasty! The portions were large and priced very reasonably. I've probably dined at the La Tolteca located on 2nd St. twenty times but had never visited this (Richmond Road) location. With that in mind I set out to use this Friday dinner as an opportunity to compare the two locations in as fairly a manner as possible. Initial impressions: This location is larger and much more noisy than the 2nd St. version. The outdoor seating area also appears to be larger but is clearly better situated for good service and ambiance. It's well back from the adjacent busy road. This location also offers a buffet 6 days/week which I am virtually certain is not available at the 2nd St. location. Our greeting was so/so and we were seated on a booth. Our server Mayte approached us promptly and was both pleasant and attentive throughout the meal. Once ordered (Enchilada Supreme, #115 and the Pollo Special, #112) the food was delivered promptly. And, in my mind, it didn't look so great (see photo). The ground beef in my enchilada was dry and, tasteless probably as result of being prepared much earlier in the day. Other items were ok. The chicken in my guest's order had a number of very chewy parts but the flavor was generally fine. There are obviously problems with the building. The lights in half of the dining room were off and on during dinner. The corridor to ladies room and the floor was wet thanks to a ceiling leak. Restroom cleanliness was average at best. All things considered and considering this was our first visit, I'd give this location a "3" and favor the 2nd St. location. In spite of the friendly and obviously competent server, the greeting, ambience, overall cleanliness, food presentation and quality of the meal fell short of its "sister" location. I'll visit again to ensure fairness. read more

We ordered the guacamole appetizer which was okay but with a little added lemon tasted great! We ordered the shrimp nachos which I would definitely recommend best thing we ordered. I had the chicken quesadilla which was soggy and could not eat it. My son ate his Mac and cheese which I was grateful that he liked. Welp came to check it out since some friends were hyping it up... i started of with the basic order a Corona and Coke, when i got my drinks corona wasnt cold at all coke was the same, looks like their fridge isnt working or something, next it took them a while until they came back so i can request my appetizer but ended up ordering both at the same time, so i order the siziling Fajitas Jalapeno and they sure did disappoint this has nothing authentic written on is meat was pretty tough lets not mention they fail to let me know that the plate were the beens and cold salad was that it was freaking hot(dont know the reason why) burn my fingers Well guess what right after i received my food it took them until i was basically finished for them to come back and ask if i needed anything else. Service was pretty much garbage here food is eatable drinks not so much, Michiladas was ok dont really recommend. read more
