I've been there many times on the Terraza , but unfortunately today I encountered an arrogant and rude waiter. I ordered some shrimp, and the menu never mentioned that I had to peel each shrimp myself, removing the head, tail, and shell. It was as if I were going to the kitchen to prepare my dish. This waiter wanted me to pay even though I wasn't satisfied; he never offered me another option. They should have better service and update the dish description! Not everyone knows Mexican food! Visiting the area and noticed the advert in the Williamsburg visitor's publication and it also had a few coupons. We happened to be in the same shopping plaza twice since we arrive, therefore took it as a sign to try it out. We were promptly greeted and seated when we arrived, followed quickly by complementary chips and dip (salsa/crema) as well as asked if we would want authentic tableside guac (make sure you have cash for tips). We have been to Mexico a few times so I think we have an idea of what authentic Mexican tastes like and this was a pleasant surprise. We ordered lunch specials that came out very quickly (was not even 10 minutes) after we ordered drinks and food. The restaurant was not extremely busy at the time but there were other patrons. The server was polite and provided good service. From a look around the restaurant looks clean and there was not much to make me think other wise. The shopping center has plenty of free parking but sure it can get very crowded due to the other stores in the plaza. I would suggest visiting if you're in the area for a valuable meal. It also was very close to where we are staying, which helps! We may visit again during this trip but certainly would if return to the area. read more

My family and I visited La Terraza on Monticello after a long day at Busch Gardens. We had a large party of 10 including several children one with autism. The staff was very accommodating though our waitress didn't appear friendly she was very effective and did a great job. The food was DELICIOUS, the portions were MASSIVE, the guacamole was FRESH!! The food at La Terraza is much more authentic than some other places (cough cough Plaza). You can still get your basic, sigma, alpha or whatever the kids say now a days food, but you can also food with authentic spice and seasoning. The margaritas are always a generous size and aren't just syrup. The service is good, even on busy nights and when an order is wrong they will always fix it. During "off" times is best, but if you're all about the hustle and bustle they have that ambiance too. The outdoor area is covered which is extremely convenient. I'd take this over any other place up here for your basic Mexican and marg. read more

Went here again last night, and tried a few more entrees and was not that impressed. Had visited 5 months ago and the entree we had was good but sadly not this time around. I tried the chicken poblano enchiladas and the sauce which the waiter told me was a mole sauce was not a good mole sauce at all. Also the chicken that came in the enchiladas was dry and rough. Rice was also overcooked. I want fluffy Mexican rice. I also had the Chile rellano and it was okay. The sauce on it www not good either. Maybe they don't make good sauces. My husband had the chicken over rice with peppers and onions added in. It is topped with cheese sauce. It's sort of sad when you have to order more cheese dip because there is not enough on it. This is my friends and I go to spot during happy hour! Not only is the food tasty, but the drink deals are phenomenal. A giant fish bowl marg for $8? Sign me up. For my main, I ordered the Burrito Mexicano (pictures). Massive burrito that I could not finish but tasted great with every bite. The chips each time I have gone have been great and they will bring more on request! Pro tip for Williamsburg is they have the special white sauce dip local to the tidewater area. I agree with a previous review about the queso portion being a tad small but it's still warm goodness and worth it. read more

Greeted with a smile upon entering. Very friendly waiter. Easy to understand and quick to place our order. Food came out quickly and very hot. I had the lunch size chimichanga with beef tips. Okay, the food wasn't bad. Nothing remarkable, so it probably would have gotten three or four stars. Why only two stars, then? I'm so glad that you asked. I ordered four entrees to go. Got home, and one entire entree was missing. I called back to tell them, and was treated like I was bothering them. Told them that I would be there in five minutes if they could find my food. I ended up waiting in their lobby for another 20 minutes for them to hand me three beef tacos. It wasn't anything complicated. No reason that it took that long and I was treated like an annoyance. This is one of my favorite Mexican food spots in The hampton roads area. Definitely one of my top 3. We always have the fresh guac and this place it's consistent and very good. Queso dip is also very very good. Still give it five except for one waiter who seems to have an attitude all the time. We have been going to this place for the last 7 years at least once every 6 weeks or so. margaritas are consistent and very good. pricing is also very good. Summertime sitting outside on the patio takes it up another notch. We usually have the shrimp quesadilla, shrimp tacos, or the shrimp and rice dish. Again, all the seafood on the menu works for us. Friendly and fast service, decent food. This was my first time coming to La Terraza Mexican Grill and there was plenty of indoor seating (there's also outdoor seating with coverage). I ordered the Arroz Con Pollo with a side of the beans dip. The menu describes the entree as: Grilled chicken breast sauteed with onions, bell peppers and tomatoes. Served over rice. Unfortunately there was no onions, bell peppers or tomatoes, as well as my bean dip never came. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, but it was a disappointing experience especially with the restaurant not being too busy. The interior of the restaurant is cute, no "photo moments". Stopped in mid-week for lunch, and on the early side. The atmosphere when you walk in is not reminiscent of what typical Mexican restaurants are like, perhaps because it is Williamsburg. A bit on the dark side, with neutral decor, a few TVs on the walls, and leather booths, but still a welcoming place with a friendly hostess and staff. They offer both Lunch Entrees and Lunch Specials, and all are very reasonably priced. The chips were fresh and the salsa was mild but quite flavorful. The Chilaquiles dish, with chicken, was delicious - a great choice! The chicken was tender with good seasoning and the tortilla chips were perfectly moist in a delicious sauce. It is served with rice or beans, though I was never offered the choice, I didn't select, and I got beans, I guess as the default. The Arroz con Pollo on the other hand was way too salty and difficult to eat - perhaps a slip of the hand when seasoning? It also lacked the flavors typical of this straightforward traditional dish. Surprisingly, the Fajita Taco Salad with chicken was also salty. We didn't send either back - just drank an excessive amount of water. Disappointing. The restaurant got busy at noon, always a good sign. It did get quite loud very quickly. I can imagine happy hour is probably pretty lively here. We will likely come back to try other dishes - except for the Chilaquiles, this first visit was just meh. read more

Top 5 reasons why this place was AWFUL. 1- Ambiance reminds me of a Walmart store on steroids... bright white (like blue) recessed lighting. Dirty dark blinds that plume out dust if you try to look between them as we did because of a storm. 2- The floor was so wet and sticky, one was afraid to slip and fall. 3- Carnitas tacos... meat was so greasy it dripped out the bottom of the taco. Had zero flavor. 4- Quesadilla w/ steak was the poorest example of a quesadilla I have ever seen in my life. It looked like a Taco Bell chalupa. Again, steak was so greasy it disintegrated the integrity of the cheese. It was served literally folded in half bare on a plate with no sour cream or salsa. When asked for sour cream, it took so long I had to get up and find the server to ask her it. 5- EVEN THE RICE WAS GREASY and completely un-edible. A few reasons why I gave it two stars: the guacamole is made table side and is DELICIOUS as are the chips. Margarita was pretty decent. Service was a solid 5/10. The service here is horrible. No one ever stopped by our table to check on us or clear off our table. If I looked in their direction, they walked in the other direction. I ordered the table side guacamole and it never came. When I asked about it, the one waiter who actually showed up called to the waitresses in the front, all of who were just standing by the front door talking the entire time we were here. I ended up just canceling the order because we were done with our meal. The only reason I'm giving two stars is because the food was good and plentiful. This restaurant is in a shopping plaza that has an EV charging station. We stopped to charge our EV on the way to the beach and decided to try this spot for a late lunch around 3:30 while the car charged up. It was a nice day so we asked for outdoor seating. We were greeted warmly and immediately. Cumbia and other Latin music played on the speakers. I ordered pollo loco with sauce on the side and my spouse ordered carnitas. The food was terrific. Service was terrific and prompt. We had also ordered diet Cokes but sent them back because they had obviously come from old aluminum cans but it was no problem on their side. They replaced the drinks with water. It was such a small thing so no stars off. We would come back if we lived here. I think the service is what set the place apart from others. My wife and I were visiting Williamsburg this week and enjoyed a late lunch at La Terraza. The food was excellent and the service top notch! I explained I was unable to eat rice (carbs) and our server quickly suggested two servings of beans and further suggested one of refried beans and another of black beans. La Terraza is one restaurant that consistently is good! I picked up a carry-out order yesterday, and everything was accurate and tasty. I went in to the restaurant to order the food, and sat at the bar. A young man brought me chips, and I declined the white dip that goes with them. The chips were warm, and the salsa was outstanding...just the right burn, without being overwhelming. I ordered a pint of beer, and it was so cold and refreshing. My takeout came very quickly, and I paid the bill. When I got home everything was still warm, and was exactly what I ordered, including the extra beans instead of rice and beans for one of the meals. Good food and good price for that food but it should be a buffet or counter service restaurant, as service is non-existent. My drink served with no napkins, food served with no utensils. No one checked on me for over 10 minutes after fajita was served and had gotten cold. I demanded a reheat or that would not have happened. The servers were not paying attention to customers-evident across the restaurant. I sat at 14-seat bar and was only one at bar. I saw at least 4 people making drinks so it must be "everyman for himself" bar model so servers make their own drinks and serve customers. Clear that a food technician owns and/or manages the restaurant, has little interest in organization and training. My drink was ok but likely drink quality is inconsistent under this model. But if you have a large group to feed and want good quality food, low cost and don't mind chasing servers for things, then I would recommend the restaurant. Yum! Being Native Southern Californians, we typically are underwhelmed by Mexican food outside of Mexico or So Cal, so this was a surprising delight to find in Virginia! We found this place on Yelp not far from our hotel and we had an awesome experience! The place is clean, service is fast and attentive and the menu is extremely robust. Literally pages and pages of options on the menu. I started with a skinny margarita which was delicious, and we did the table side guacamole made to order which I highly recommend. The chips and salsa to start are good- no overly special but good. Guacamole was quite good. I had the Fajitas Texana which was awesome, my husband loved his burrito California, but the standout was my sons meal which was the La Terraza Especial steak and mushrooms ! Sooooo good! This was surprisingly good. I the seafood nachos, tortilla soup, fried seafood chimichanga, spicy shrimp and rice and the skirt steak and chicken. All were yummy. Could not finish dinner as the potions were huge. Fresh guacamole was fabulous. The only thing that was not stellar was the skirt steak itself. It was a little fatty for our taste. read more
