Went to plaza on Friday July 11th 2020! It was a birthday dinner that my husband and kids took me to, we had the worst experience EVER!! Besides the fact we waited forever for are food! The server got the order so messed up. My daughter who is 19 years old ask to have and manager to come to our table, the manager never came! I went up with the check and was asking the hostess/cashier if the manager just didn't want to come talk to our table because we have had issues? She didn't answer that question she walked away cane back and said we took off the items you had problems with! Well that's nice and all for them to do and I didn't mind just paying for the items. We attempted to stop and eat at Plaza Azteca after calling ahead. We were in town visiting and had our two cocker spaniels with us. We spoke with a young lady on the phone to confirm they had outdoor seating and were dog friendly. Upon arriving we were told that dogs were not shoes but we could tie them up outside (in 90 degree heat) while we ate. The manager insisted that his entire staff knew the policy and someone would not have given us this information. His rude and condescending tone proved they were not in the customer service business. read more

This goes to show you that every Plaza Azteca is NOT the same! The Holland Road location in Virginia Beach is TERRIBLE! I wasn't too hot on going here because of my experiences with their other location, especially with the large variety of restaurants in the area. But I caved in and went in with the fam. Why did I buck against this place? I ordered the beef chimichunga lunch special and was surprised by the taste and quality. I was a little disappointed that I had to pay extra for guacamole, but was cool with the overall presentation, quickness and preparation of the food. It was fresh and on point. What knocked it down a notch was the smell of the cleaning supplies nearby. It was nauseating, but thank God it was mostly gone before we got the food. I don't understand why we are always seated so close to the restrooms or kitchen when we visit Mexican restaurants. I'm beginning to feel some type of way by this. I've made this trip to Plaza Williamsburg several times hoping for a better experience and its just not happening. One can't really make bad mexican food... what really brings the scores down low is the service. It's slow. I know, unheard of--- slow service at a mexican place? I know! Usually the slow service also creates a slow seating if in busy time. But even in slow times, the service is way way way slow. Today after waiting over 15 min for the server to take the order, almost 20 min more was waited on the food. Drinks were empty, plates were staggering, patience was wavering. I called over the manager, who never once stopped by- like our waitress, and just walked away and said "i'll get her"--- never apologizing. Moreover, he never came back to check in on us! This isn't the first time i've experienced bad bad management for Plaza Azteca. Anyway... hate to blow the Plaza buzz kill-- but I've found their Achilles heel and they've lost my business. read more

I would probably give it 3.5 stars. For Williamsburg eateries, maybe up it to a 4. While others have stated, it isn't authentic but this is Williamsburg. Most employees were definitely authentic but the recipes are surely dictated by the home office as this is a small chain. The 34 oz Bud Light was $4.50 which is pretty cheap though it may have been HH. I got a carnitas type burrito that the bartender suggested. The free red salso is pretty spicy (a little too much garlic and onions for moi) but the food isn't real hot so if you pound the salsa down while you wait, it might take your tongue a while to calm down and be able to taste the main dish. Once I did, I thought it was a pretty good flavor....kind of smokey. Service was great. read more

It was about 6 o'clock on Monday night. Walked in, wasn't even greeted. The hostess stood there like she didn't want to do any work. Right then and there I knew I wasn't going to like it. We sat down our waitress came over and greeted us. She was pleasant but didn't really say much. The menu seemed to have a lot of the same items with different ingredients so not much to choose from. Maybe I'm used to the Mexican restaurants back at home. I ordered some kind of kabob with steak, peppers,onions, hot peppers served over rice. I asked for it to be medium, it came out well done. My husband ordered a very bland chicken enchilada that actually sounded really good. But Im glad I didn't order anything with chicken in it because come to find it he had food poisoning 3 hours later. I will never go here again since our experience was not good. read more

I'm a snob about Mexican places, and this one surprised me. The tableside guacamole was out of this world! Me and two friends devoured it in record time. It was nice to get truly spicy food, instead of the watered down stuff so popular north of the Mason-Dixon line. The tortilla chips were very good and seemed handmade. Is this truly authentic Mexican food? Nah. That stuff is exceptionally rare outside of the Southwest, but the Americanized versions? I still love them. I got the #12 combo (2 beef burritos and 1 chicken quesadilla) with a side of rice and beans. It was a lot of food and very good. We didn't get drinks, but they looked pretty good to me. We waited about 20 minutes for a table on a Thursday night around eight thirty, so if you're not a fan of waiting, I'd go early or on an off night. We were glad we had as there were lots of large holiday parties that night and we would have waited quite a while to be seated if we had not had a reservation. I wish I could give this place Zero Stars. I'm up writing a review at 4am because of a stomach ache after leaving this place. My whole family came home with stomach aches... We visited for the first time on a Saturday night around 8pm. There was no line and we still were told to wait 10-15mins? There were plenty on tables open, so I was a little put off by that. Afterwords, the food took about 45 mins to come out which I think is a bit long for tacos and burritos. I would rate the food a 4 and the margaritas a 2! The frozen drinks tasted pre-made and I had a terrible headache when I came home and I only had one! They also did not listen when my husband ordered No Onions with his burrito(he hates onions). Had high hopes for this restaurant, but it was not to be. Walking in I noticed a sign stating margaritas on special. Asked the hostess if that was still valid and she said, "Yes." Asked my waiter and he said, "No, it ended nine minutes ago." So right off the bat not a great impression. Tuna appetizer was nicely seared and pink on the inside, one star for that. OMG nachos just ok and for the price of $12 I would have expected something amazing. I had fried chicken chimichangas. The beans were very salty and the rice was bland. My children had the El Vaquero T-Bone. At $17 it was the thinnest t-bone I've ever seen. I ordered them medium-rare and there was not a hint of pink but arrived well done. The taste was good though and the potatoes that came on the side were the best part of the meal, another star for those. Finally, I ordered the fried ice cream for the three of us to share. One bite and we were all disgusted. All we tasted was oil. I sent it back and did not order a different dessert. The booth we sat in was huge. It was difficult to reach the table. The seat on my side of the booth was not attached properly and I nearly landed on the floor twice while trying to get close to the table. The waiter kept us in ice water and chips well enough. The third star is for the fact that my kids were fairly happy with the meal. We had tons of leftovers for lunch the next day. Hubs and I were in town for me to run the Christmastown 8K at Busch Gardens, so we arrived the afternoon before; packet pick-up was there at the Shoppes on High Street, so we literally stumbled upon this gem and were glad that we did! (Back in Orlando, we used to frequent Azteca de Oro, which is a different restaurant, but we hoped the 'Azteca' name wouldn't lead us astray ;) haha, really though - I'll get to the review now...) This is obviously a pretty new restaurant from the looks of the building, and as soon as we stepped in (we really just wanted to see a menu, but when we saw how busy it was, we said, 'what the hey!') we were greeted warmly by the hostesses. The decor is different than most Mexican restaurants in this class - think more Southwest US, with rustic looking tables and ironwork and such - but pleasant nonetheless. The menu is pretty big and even had vegetarian options clearly indicated, which I appreciated - and the prices are very reasonable. Like all Americanized Mexican fare, there were plenty of yummy chips and salsa to go around, and there was even an accompanied 'white sauce' for dipping as well. I had a combo which included a mushroom quesadilla, cheese enchilada and a potato burrito - perfect portion size and served on square plates, which definitely was different! Not those standard huge oval plates with heapings of beans and rice - and hubs had seafood enchiladas with crab and lobster - SOOO good, I snuck a bite - his also came with rice which was really yummy. For both of us to eat, plus hubs' beer and my DC, it was less than $25! Another bonus! I would love to try the homemade guacamole next time if we had a bigger group! =D read more

I've been here three separate times now. The prices are very reasonable, with most entrees coming in at under $10. Much of the food is just unadventurous, with a single flavor and texture dominating the entirety of a meal. Who wants to eat a burrito with just mashed potatoes inside, or only plain beef? However, there are those items on the menu that have a variety of flavors and ingredients; these items always impress me. I actually recommend going vegetarian while here, as these items (in my experience) skew towards using a wider palette. The service was very slow one of the times I was there, and I can't remember how it was the other two. Overall, be smart about what you order and you can have a great experience. read more

Vegetarians beware! The salsa is great of course but the "vegetarian" food advertised as "vegetarian" is actually not. The darker rice is cooked in chicken broth. Meat somehow ends up in a vegetarian bowl. The beans are cooked with broth as well. However, the mistakes are recovered by the waitress's service. Throughout the dinner, she tried her best to fix the mistakes and brought new food to accommodate. This all would have been avoided if the food was prepared correctly and not made with any animal broth at all. My family loved this place but now we will never come back. read more

My first drink of choice was a mojito and it tasted like Sprite with lime so I was a bit disappointed with that. I also order the chicken quesadilla and while the portion was huge, there was a lot of juice coming from the chicken making the tortilla very soggy. I picked out the chicken, which was pretty good and didn't eat anything else. Service was ok. Our guy was quick to great us, get us chips and salsa, and then take our drink order. Drinks took a bit of time and then it took him awhile to bring us our check. All in all, it's a fine place to go and I'd probably go back because their drinks were so damn good! read more

My fiancé and I are temporarily in the area as he is a contractor, when we first came down all of the Mexican restaurants weren't in the same ballpark as to what we were used too eating back home, we had seen plaza in Glen Allen, and it was absolutely packed so we decided to give it a try, and it blew past any other Mexican restaurant we had ever ate at.
