Will not be returning. The taco platter must of had like 10 chips that cooked into the aluminum container. I understand that chips sog but these chips turned into a pie dough consistency as if it was reheated in the oven with all the wet consistency. The chicken was dry, the ground beef was ok. The guacamole was flavorless!. The salsa was decent and the chips were ok. My husband chorizo tasted like burned hotdogs. We know good authentic Mexican food. I came here with my bf after a very unsuccessful shopping day at the outlet mall. We figured, we drove all the way out to Williamsburg from Virginia Beach, we should stay a little and get something to eat. Surprisingly enough, it's only a few minutes from the outlet! This place has charming decor: vibrant wall murals and really interesting painted chairs. However, that was the only real good thing about this place. Their biggest downfall is their service. It's a huge restaurant with several rooms and seating areas, yet we were sat in the back room with a party of 15+ LOUD and obnoxious people. Our waitress wasn't friendly at all, and wasn't really around to check up on us or fill up our drinks. Serious pet peeve. As someone who works costumer service, I know that it doesn't kill you to be a little kind, even when you don't want to. I ordered shrimp tacos, which comes with rice and a side of pico de gallo. I mean...it's food. If you spent the whole day at Busch Gardens and you're exhausted and starving, it will probably do the trick. But honestly, as a local, we've ordered from here a few times because we live right down the street and we just can't bear to try any more. It's just not good food. At all. The refried beans have zero flavor...like literally ZERO. Same for the rice. Not sure how they managed to make even chori pollo "not great," but they did. Not enough sausage, not enough sauce...it's not even really a cheese sauce; it's like a milk sauce. Not enough salt in the sauce. The fajita beef is cut into the tiniest pieces imaginable and there is maybe 2 ounces of meat total. The chips are the same chips that almost every other Hampton Roads Mexican-type restaurant buys...the kind that are stale AND fried in almost-rancid oil. Do the owners even taste these chips??? They're gross. Do yourself a favor and drive the extra 5 mins to Plaza Azteca which has the same rancid chips, and very slightly higher prices, but at least the food has actual seasoning, tastes really good, comes in an adult sized portion/pieces, and you can get a fantastic margarita (the organic one with the agave is delicious). My wife and I were on the road for a long hard days drive in the pouring rain and when we made it to our hotel La Tolecta was near and we both love Mexican food, so we decided to try it. All I can say, is amazing. Atmosphere was great, restaurant was very clean, the staff was amazing, and the food was terrific. I had the Burrito Bravo dinner (a unique spin to chili relleno's stuffed with beef and in a burrito shell. Topped with red sauce and queso. Great!! This story has to be told. I went there Sat to pick up an order that I was given because my first order was SLOP.I never said this I just told Jose that the order that I received was not good and that I and my friends and family have been ordering from them for over 20 years and it has always been great. Jose told me that he would make it up to me, so I told him thank you, but I did not want Mexican any more today and he said when you are ready just come buy and pick it up no problem right, I thanked him and on Sat while watching football I decided to have my Mexican meal now. I called and told them I would be right down to pick up my meal when I got to the restaurant Jose Immediately told me that he did not know me, and I was trying to con him out of his food. He put his hand up in my face and shook his finger at me saying I do not know you this went back and forth I got the order, and he told me to never come back I never used bad words not my thing. This is the bad part when I got home, I found that they had loaded my order up with enough cayenne and with enough capsaicin to "kill you "I am 80 and have high blood pressure this could have given me a stroke Everything I said here is 100% true so please take this to heart. First visit and I was solo, La Tolteca is on my list of favorite authentic Mexican food. Now whether carnitas enchiladas are a "traditional" dish or not my food was delicious hot and had the perfect amount of carnitas, verde, cilantro, and onion. I stopped here for lunch a week or so ago because I was working Williamsburg and feeling like tacos. It's a cute little restaurant with its own parking lot. I was greeted promptly and seated quickly. Water, chips and salsa appeared incredibly fast. I ended up ordering some guacamole and cheese dip, and the pork tacos (carnitas), which also came with a side of beans. The guac and cheese dip were just alright -- nothing special to sing home about, but okay. I was not super impressed with the tacos. Depending on your style, these definitely sport more of the "browned bits" kind of charring on the pork, which I prefer less than other styles that are a bit more moist and tender. Also the tortillas weren't the freshest I've had on the peninsula. So overall, it was just alright for me -- definitely a step up from Taco Bell, and satisfied my Mexican craving, but I'm also not jumping like crazy to visit a second time. read more

This time, it appears they added a vegetarian section to their menu, which was most welcome! I ordered the Quesadilla Ranchera and enjoyed it very much and would certainly eat there again! The reason for my only four stars is what they serve as chili rellenos are not chili rellenos at all. A real chili relleno is a large green chili stuffed with cheese and cooked within an egg batter, all covered with a sauce. What Tolteca serves is a portion of a small green pepper, with some ground beef in the open half. More like a small portion of a stuffed green pepper. It's OK, but it is in no way a chili relleno. Do the owners think that people in our mid-Atlantic town don't know the difference, and try this on us anyway? But it's hard to fool us old guys who grew up eating Mexican food in California for many decades. read more

We had left the area and when we came back to retire here, we were so happy that La Tolteca was still as good as it was before. It was the first Mexican restaurant in Williamsburg which opened in 1996. The Green Enchiladas or the Street Tacos are the best. My husband tried The Pork Tips and I had the Beef Chiploteada, an excellent choice for us who seem to always go for " the same". The Guacamole is made with fresh ingredients and a great starter. Totally delicious! The Texas fajitas were enjoyed and destroyed my two of my family. The quesadilla rellena was well appreciated (cheese, chicken, beans) with a huge amount of rice and salad beside it. I had the double combo (chili relleno and chalupa) and it was so yummy! Wide selection of very good food. The portions are generous, especially considering the low prices. Per dollar, La Tolteca is probably the best restaurant in Williamsburg. I highly recommend trying the Arizona quesadilla. It's the size of a dinner plate, packed full of tasty ingredients, and it comes with guacamole and sour cream, along with chips and salsa on the side. And it costs under 13 dollars. Most restaurants would charge you at least 18 dollars for all of that. I will definitely be eating here more often. read more

This area of Williamsburg offers a wide selection of restaurants. I am thrilled that we took a chance on La Tolteca. The menu is quite large and I believe that this is done to provide a wide range of food options ranging from authentic mexican dishes to some more Tex-Mex, Americanized options. I give them a pass on this given that we are talking about Williamsburg, VA, not exactly know as "Little Mexico". As you might have guessed, we stuck to the authentic dishes. I highly recommend the Tacos al Pastor! The tacos were one of the best I've ever had and I have had a lot of Tacos al Pastor! I had the vegetarian bean tacos for about $12.. Rice was ok, the beans were tasty. I LOVED the fresh homemade salsa they give you when you walk in. Service was excellent. It's tasty, consistent, and while it doesn't have tableside guac service a la Plaza Azteca, it also doesn't have the hefty price tag of Plaza Azteca. Easily accessible from downtown for you touristy folks - and it's just as good as that Mexican place in your hometown - Honest. Uber Eats doesn't exist here yet, but you can order online and quickly grab it to go back to your hotel room. If you ask for extra chips, they'll give you extra - and they'll give you to go "flatware" without you asking. In fact, while it's a fine spot to dine in, I actually tend to prefer it to go.
