The older lady at the front needs an attitude check. I got 9 items that I was splitting between myself and another family. While I was waiting I noticed they had cardboard boxes sitting out. After she handed me my order I asked if I could have one so the baked goods would be more presentable than just a paper bag when I gave them away. She immediately gave me the stankiest face. I even clarified that I would put everything in the box because I thought maybe she assumed I expected her to repack everything. But she still looked visibly annoyed while handing me the box. Do the boxes cost extra? Are they only for cakes or certain items? I'll never know cause she did not say one word she just looked at me dirty. Like dont make a face if you cant make a case. I was appalled, left absolutely speechless because I have never experienced that in my life. And if she so kindly told me the boxes cost extra, I would've gladly paid. If they were reserved for specific items, I would've said okay thats fine can i get another bag. That said, their baked goods are pretty good. I don't live nearby, so I only stop in a couple of times a year. I love the Gouda cheese bread but I don't think it's as good as it was a few years ago. They used to top it with chunks of Gouda, but now it's all melted into the bread. Maybe they changed it to use less cheese or maybe it's easier to make this way but I definitely prefer the old version. Great baked goods. Insane customer service. read more

Cute little cafe in Closter! They have some unique flavors and the employees are very friendly. I ended up trying out the Ham & Cheese Croissant and the chocolate chip cookie. Croissant was SO GOOD - the cheese was really melty and the croissant was so fresh and flakey. The chocolate chip cookie was also really good - you can tell they use really good quality chocolate and it was one of those cookies where the crust is crunchy and the middle part is softer. The cookie also had a ton of chocolate so definitely a must try if you like your cookies with less dough (but not overly sweet!) Overall, would come back to try other pastries. TIP: Gets crowded on the weekends with bikers. Go early or late afternoon to ensure you get parking. They do have a parking lot but it can fill up fast. read more

Should have reviewed this place a while ago, because I've grabbed their delicious bread before. Today my wife and I were walking at the nearby nature center and decided to extend the walk to La Tabatiere. The shop is small but they use the space wisely, nice counter filled with one hit after the other. Literally everything in there looks magnificent. Today I went with a double shot of espresso and a chocolate peanut butter chip cookie. Service is prompt and professional. We sat at a picnic table outside the bakery. Used to love this place. Has gone so downhill that today is the last straw. Line situation is ambiguous and not well managed. Space is tiny and people crowd around it's not clear who is waiting to order versus drinks. Workers are rude and only courteous to "regulars." I come here somewhat frequently but I guess not enough to shoot the shit with the workers while they're supposed to be working. One barista is solid and just makes the drinks. One is constantly chatting with everyone about married life and the gym and it holds everything up. Cashier was rude today not saying a word to me and just barking a drink order. The whole parking situation is a nightmare. Pastries are overpriced and selection hasn't changed since they opened several years ago. Owner guy is fine but he's not there often anymore, probably coasting on his overpriced pastry profits. Im not coming back here anymore and finding a new bakery among the MANY in Bergen County. This is top three bakery in USA. Seriously obsessed, it's small too small to sit and eat which makes me adore it even more. The pastries taste as if they were made right in Paris. This place is a mix of a Korean vibe with a Parisian taste going for it. I can eat every croissant they have available. They had plain croissant, ham and cheese croissants, chocolate croissants, not to mention all of the one of a kind different assortment of dessert pastries. The coffee barista is also a vibe, she really knows how to make a really good latte. She's my favorite, just cause she knows I'm picky and she still manages to make me the best espresso in Closter. This bakery is a cute little spot in downtown Closter. There really aren't any spots to sit indoors, but there is a picnic table right outside the store. I have not gotten anything else here except for the baguettes, and they are fantastic with a hard, crispy crust and chewy inside. I always just come here for the baguettes so I can't offer any feedback for any other items, but every item in the display cases looks great. I have been coming here for years and the quality and consistency of their coffee and pastries are unmatched. All the staff are amazing and friendly. Very attentive to their customers and knows my order always. Due to being a bakery as well, it's only an order and go location with no indoor seating but a few tables outside. They have a small parking lot right next to the building, which was helpful. The bakery itself was small, mostly, just take out here. During our visit, many people came in here for their bread. A really good sign of their quality! We ordered Matcha Latte and Mocha. The Matcha had the REAL matcha flavor, no artificial flavor, which was great. It had just the right sweetness to it. Mocha was creamy and tasty, strong yet comforting flavor. We decided to have a breakfast right there. This was when we were still allowed to eat in, about a month ago. I ordered Ham & Egg Salad Croissant. My hubby also wanted this item, but it seems like they only offer what is out there on display. And since there was only one...well, I got it! I am not sure why they can't just make another one in the kitchen though... It was a really nice sandwich! My hubby ended up getting the Ham & Cheese Croissant. It had some crispy cheese crust on top, which was really Nice. The ham was fresh, and it had some kind of sauce or aioli inside, which was delightful! We also had Green Tea White Chocolate Scone. It was light and airy, tasty! We took a few extra items to go, so that we can have them later at home. We had Choux, which was filled at the time of order, Gouda Cheese Bread, Miso Bread, and some Brioches. They were all high quality, fresh, and very tasty. Passion Fruit Brioche and Blueberry Brioche were super fluffy, and filled with cream! Great item! We enjoyed every item we tried so far from here. Great Bakery for breads, desserts and speciality coffees In Bergen County New Jersey, there are a plethora of Korean Bakeries which have a variety of French-style savory and sweet bakery selections. In general, we normally stay closer to the Fort Lee and Pacific Palisades Park. Funnily enough, H Mart distributed a free calendar which highlights different Korean restaurants and La Tabatiere was highlighted so old school print advertising does still work because that advert peaked our interest. THE DECOR Inside is tight if you are arriving at peak times but there is a bevy of selections which run the gamut from cakes and sweets to more traditonal varieties of breads. I would suggest making a full assessment of the varieties before ordering. Also, take note of the bread on the higher shelf in the back such as the miso bread The FOOD & BEVERAGES We had some of the breakfast items Ham & Egg Salad Croissant for $5.50 and Ham & Cheese Croissant for $5.50. We paired these items with a Matcha Latte and Mocha which were both $4.80 each. The baristas were on point. The Matcha drink has a very sublte taste. For a dessert, we have the Green Team White Chocolate Scone for $1.95. We also ordered a few items to take home as well, Miso Bread for $6.50, Gouda Cheese Bread for $2.50, Made to order Choux for $3.75 for a large one, and Passion Fruit Brioche for $2.75 and Blueberry Brioche for $2.75. All the items were baked well and the cream in the Choux and the Brioche was excellent filled to the brim. All the baked good were eaten so fast there was nothing to take photos of! I highly recommend their cream cheese pastry, caneles, and their baguettes! I've come back three times just to pick up their baguettes. Their lattes and Americanos are also delicious! The display cases highlighted a few pastries, such as banana bread, while loaves of crusty baguettes tantalized from the back shelves. Despite the delectable looking goods, I only ordered a Cappuccino with almond milk. The espresso was sourced from coffee cult classic, Counter Culture, making the beverage rich and bold. Prices are higher than Balthazar, some items not as good. The Mango tart has liquid consistency and not set in the wet middle for $45 for 8 inch tart. The egg and ham croissant is excellent but at $7.75 pricey, the almond croissant get mushy quickly probably because filling is too wet. They frequently do not have items after ordering online but sends you an email after you pick-up order and notice item is missing, even though they don't tell you that item was not available during pick-up. So over all not worth higher prices and some items are not as good as others, inconsistency and lack of inventory. read more

This place is always packed so I was super curious to try it out. However, it is just your typical coffee shop, nothing really special. The pastries do look great though! This little gem is an authentic french bakery helmed by a pastry chef that has tasty decor, a lot of great looking breads, and a killer coffee. My friend works here so I went to visit and initially I was surprised by how small this place was! It isn't your neighborhood cafe where you can sit and get work done (what I thought initially), but a neighborhood bakery that everybody in town stops by constantly to procure their supply of artisanal french bread. I went there a bit hungry so I had their ham & cheese croissant and a cortado. I barely lucked out as they served me the last croissant (it was around 10:30am) and I tried their cortado which was uber-aromatic and delicious but well, it's only 4 oz. so perhaps I should've done a latte instead. :) What really amazed me about this place is just sheer amount of amazing looking breads - especially the brioches and TARTS! Oh man, if I weren't in the need-to-fill-my-stomach mode, I would've ordered those amazing looking tarts! They also had cakes that looked amazing. I also had the artichoke spread bread but that one was a bit too heavy/buttery with too much creaminess. In the hour or so I was there, many locals came by to pick up bread. It was busy enough that I couldn't really talk to my friend at all - that's a good thing! It became quite obvious to me that, if you're looking for a Asian-style belly-filling breads like sausage bread, curry croquettes, pizza bread, THIS PLACE IS NOT FOR YOU. I kind of belonged to that group on this day so I ended up going to a vietnamese restaurant nearby afterwards. So come for the dessert-style bread, cakes, and their baguettes (they looked amazing), and their Stumptown coffee. At first, I was annoyed that they didn't have any tables to sit at but then I bit into their brioche and all was well in the world. They do have one long table with about 6 stools if you want that instant indulgence. Their different flavored brioches are heavenly. Their croissants have a nice crunch but yet are still light and flaky on the inside. If you are into really sweet desserts then this is not your place. The pastries are delicate and flavored with the perfect amount of sweetness. They offer Stumptown coffee and espresso for your caffeine fix. I'm glad to see how many people came in and out of this cafe in a neighborhood that used to be very quiet and empty. La Tabatiere is a very small, corner-side bakery that offers a variety of pastries, tarts, and cakes, as well as Stumptown coffee and Bellocq tea. As someone who is used to paying a fortune for decent pastries in NYC, I was pleasantly surprised at the not-too-sweet, pretty, affordable, and delicious pastries offered at this bakery. Not to mention all the types of delicious teas that they have in-store. I highly recommend their tarts (which get sold out quite quickly), quiche, choux puffs, and blueberry brioche! I'm sure they aren't the most health-conscious treats out there, but as the word implies, they are treats meant to be enjoyed once a while without feeling guilty. I took off a star because of the nature of small-spaced bakeries with people coming in and out, not enough time to view all of the pastries and think about what you want, workers yelling out orders, and just how hectic things can get. There's really nowhere that offers this quality of French pâtisserie and bread anywhere close, unless you venture down to Balthazar in Englewood. But Balthazar is mass-producing, unlike this place. Similar to Balthazar - they use a ton of butter. I got the green tea pastry and the paper bag was infused with grease by the time I brought it back home. So, anything with that much better must taste good, I thought. And it turned out to be quite tasty, indeed. I'm not sure if I'll give it another shot, considering that I live somewhat closer to Balthazar. They only have a few outdoor tables and seats, but none inside.
