Our visit to Closter a few nights ago ended with getting desserts at Gateaux bakery and Café. It is surrounded by small shops, from the outside looking in, the scale of the place will surprise you how big it is inside. Our visit was short because we wanted to continue to check out more. Came here a few years ago and wasn't impressed. Stopped by while passing through the neighborhood the other day... and wow! The fresh viennoiserie in the morning is light and flaky, with some interesting flavor combinations thrown in. And the traditional fried pastries aren't greasy or too heavy at all, either. I love this spot but know that giving it a higher rating would be due to a nostalgia factor as opposed to the actual goods/atmosphere. There are other Gateaux locations near this one, but this one has the most goods. This is also a Korean bakery chain. Love their goguma (sweet potato) latte when they have it during the colder season. Unfortunately inflation/the economy caused the prices on a lot of the bakery items to go up. I will say that the drink prices are still very fair, as are many of the lil' bread items. You'll just have to try their items to figure out which ones you like most. Personally their curry doughnut and mochi (served in a pack of four), along with their coffee-cream filled bread loaf are my fave bakery items of theirs. They also sell bingsu (shave ice) but it's not good value imo. I know some reviews said that the bakery ladies were mean, but tbh they're overall pretty polite, just not bubbly/cheerful (which they don't owe you!). My hometown bakery. They make everything fresh. Prices are not bad. And I prefer it over the other bakery in town. They have a good mix of Korean baked treats. I always go as soon as it opens to get it while it's fresh. They also serve Korean shaved ice. It's expensive but it's worth it on a hot summer day. They have ample seating and it's really chill inside. Come and get some. read more

Ordered breakfast today and was pretty underwhelmed with the food. I got a Macaroni and Egg Sandwich, Tuna Sandwich, and Cream Puff Choux. None of them were bad, but they weren't great either. The prices are high, which is also why I was expecting the quality to be better. I've not tried their cakes, but they do look really good. I came here for dessert after dinner. It's my family's go to dessert place for birthday cakes or breakfast pastries. It's close by since my family lives in Tenafly. My favorite cake to get is the red bean cake and not many Asian bakeries have red bean cakes. My family usually gets one for my birthday every year. I would skip their drinks though since they're not that great. The bubble tea is not really bubble tea. They make it like a slush and not like a bubble tea. Three stars. Very spacious cafe with tons of different pastries and drinks. I love their green tea roll cake with red bean creme filling. Their cookies are good too but a bit overpriced. All of their bubble teas are blended with ice. Their bubbles are hit or miss. Sometimes they have fresh bubbles, sometimes they have stale bubbles that are just too diluted from a long period of sitting. Awesome place to come to read, sit and talk, or work. It can be a little loud with kids running around as this place seems to be a popular destination for moms. I didn't see any power outlets so come prepared with your gears all charged up. I'm not sure if they bake any of their pastries and cakes at this location. It seems like they have all the equipments and baking machines, but most of their cakes are brought out frozen. I'm a huge matcha fan, so I got their matcha macaron and cream puffs (small eclairs). The macaron tasted terrible, no matcha taste at all. But the cream puffs were amazing!! 10-12 small cream puffs in a container were $5. Great price! My sister ordered green tea latte. She hated it. Took a sip and couldn't drink more. If this place was in NYC, I would give it one star, but just because this bakery offers a nice place to hang out in cold winter days in an area where you'll see more deers in the streets than humans, I'm giving it more stars. read more

I love this bakery! Though I have not been here I have tried a few of their amazing baked goods. My coworker always brings me the most amazing little treats from here and I am so thankful for that. Other choice is the Savoy Cafe in Tenafly which is very small. Very freshly baked goods and an attractive layout for hanging out. Located in a pocket of a large but not too busy shopping center, it may be hard to find. Not too busy, meaning I hope it doesn't close for lack of business. Definitely the word needs to come out about these small quality businesses; otherwise Closter would only have Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and fast food joints to hang out. Pass the word. read more

Went here right after lunch and we ordered the green tea Patbingsu. The platter that came out had enough on it to feed 4 people and was delish. It was more than enough for our family. Normally patbingsu has red beans, shaved ice and fruit syrup. This was a variation with vanilla flavored shaved ice, the green tea powder, the red beans and additional tasty morsels of korean rice cake (tteok). I highly recommend it. read more

This review only applies to a few items i ordered: the chocolate cake, macarons and walnut bread. I loved all of them. The chocolate was gobbled up by my family and was not overly sweet like other bakeries are guilty of. The macarons are gigantic and cost $2.25 (IIRC). it comes in a variety of flavors and were made perfectly. Hard on the outside, chewy on the inside, with a sweet, though not overwhelming filling. And the walnut bread was deliciously soft and chewy. The decor is nice. I can definitely imagine myself grabbing a coffee and pastry and sitting there to do some work. I had a very pleasant experience here. Staff was very nice and helpful, and seemed like they all worked very efficiently. I was surprised by the amount of different desserts and pastries they have here. I bought some French macarons, a croissant, and a green tea latte. Everything was delicious! I was a bit hesitant about going to a French style bakery run by Koreans, but they did not disappoint! Everything in this bakery looked so delicious. My mouth is salivating just thinking about it.They sold cakes, bubble tea and other Korean desserts. They also have a lot of green tea flavored desserts so if that's your thing you've got to check this place out! I ordered all three of the bakery treats located by the front counter and was delighted by each: a twisted phyllo pretzel with the end a fan shaped with some sugar sprinkles on top, a bread stick covered with chocolate and nuts, and a horseshoe shaped red bean paste layered puff pastry thingy that consisted of a string of little cubes. The American coffee wasn't deeply satisfying and the mango smoothie needed more fruit. The atmosphere was too close to cafeteria with cheesy large photo laminates stuck on the square tables. The music selection was appropriate with older soft rock classics, but it sounded as if it were coming from some small boom box in the kitchen. Adding to the poor acoustics was the din of all the customer's conversations. They are definitively chatty in there. read more

Been coming here for years but the quality was off this time. Got 2 pastries, the red bean bun was stale, at least a day or two old. Most items are wrapped in plastic so they sell the same pastries the next day. Picked up a tapioca bun but it was rock hard, didn't buy it. It's odd because there's always racks of fresh pastries cooling next to the counter, they may be for delivery to other sites. The decaf coffee is $1 more but the price is not listed for decaf, they should at least tell you. Regular coffee is $1.50. Each cup is made to order, but the amount is small, 3/4th of a cup. read more

I am a regular customer at Gateaux, and I must say that one of the best things about moving in to town is this gem of a bakery. I get my morning coffee and breakfast pastry here on my way to work. The French pastries are always freshly made. All the staff members are very accommodating, warm and pleasant. A cup of freshly brewed coffee cost$1.25. My favorite pastries for breakfast are their chocolate croissants, ham & egg danish. They have a pretty good selection of sweet and savory pastries. They can be stale and bland if you don't get a good batch. The best part of this place is that it is huge and has lots of sitting rooms. I purchased a bunch of baked goods and the majority of them were dry and stale. We tried a few of the goods at the bakery and mentioned to the worker that they tasted old and she was very defensive and rude, saying that every single item in the bakery is made fresh every day, which I find hard to believe as the selection is vast and they conveniently leave the date blank on the stickers applied to the packaging. The two loaves of bread I purchased to go were so dry and even though they claimed to be "Chestnut Bread" there were only two tiny pieces of chestnut to be found in the entire loaf. Not to mention both tasted stale and like old butter. There are definitely much better Korean bakeries around. This has to be the worst one I've been to. read more
