Absolutely a hidden gem tucked in the corner parking lot of Westwood is a small bakery led by an incredibly accomplished pastry chef (check her resume on the website). The pastries don't last on the counter long and can sell out. Everything is fresh natural and apparently less than 350 calories!! The cakes & pastries are always beautiful and you can tell they are made with great detail at the hands of a talented patissier. I love the combinations of Asian & Korean flavors with French pastries. It's on the pricier side but worth it for the craftsman ship and high quality ingredients such as Valhrona chocolate (made from rare cocoa beans) and Isigny Sainte-Mère butter (renowned for its richness). I am a local and noticed this pastry shop that I have never been to and tried to order some pastries to try out. When I checked into Yelp and tried to take a picture of the counter, the lady told me "No Pictures!" I told her the pictures are for Yelp. She said "No Pictures!" So it is quaint little shop. Not very much in the case when we arrived, so we ordered the pistachio caramel dacquoise and Paris-Brest. The pistachio had absolutely no pistachio taste and the white chocolate center was overpowering. Not impressed. The Paris-Brest was nothing more than a cream puff with no flavor. Back in February I had placed an order for a friend's 75th Birthday party which had to be postponed due to illness. Well, this Saturday we had a magnificent brunch which included the sublime desserts made for us by Ciel. The birthday celebrant specifically requested the Coffee Caramel Dacquoise cake which she loved, telling me that she never had better. We also ordered the Strawberry Cream Cake, Raspberry Tart and a dozen Mini Choux-all consumed by a room full of silent savorers. I've been to Ciel more times than I can count, but I waited to try the Dessert Tasting before writing a review. See photos below. A friend and I did the 3-course Dessert Tasting, $25/person. It's kind of like a dessert omakase. (Be sure to make a reservation before you do the Dessert Tasting.) You are seated in a special area right by an artificial fireplace, and the 3-course tasting comes with one free tea or coffee. With each course, Chef Jane provides a description/explanation. She uses fresh fruit in every single dish, which my friend and I LOVED. And with each dish my tastebuds were brought to enlightenment or paradise or foodgasm, whatever you call it. It's one of those things you'll never understand until you TRY. Chef Jane is a kitchen magician. She does things to dessert that you didn't know were possible--not only with flavor, but also with presentation. At Ciel, you will find desserts that are less sweet than their traditional counterparts, but even more delicious. You will find service that is consistently warm and polite. You will also find the best damn cup of hot chocolate you've ever had in your life. Honestly, you just have to experience it for yourself. I regret that it took me this long to write a review, but that only means that my five stars are truly solid, since I've now been to Ciel about five or more times! This is a dessert restaurant, not a coffee shop. You are expected to make choices from the menu, which, yes, include coffee and tea, and enjoy them as a meal. I know people have complained about not being able to just get a coffee, but at Ciel, that would be akin to going to a regular restaurant and just ordering a soda. And you have plenty of options out there for just coffee- this place is more special than that. If you want to treat yourself to freshly-made, seasonal, hand-crafted, French-inspired desserts, this is the place. And, just like in Paris, you are not rushed and welcome to linger and enjoy your desserts as long as you'd like. The upside to seasonal is obvious. The downside is that you can't always expect the same thing twice! But, a tried and true staple is the chocolate soufflé, which you can smell as it's baking. I also love the iced latte with choux pastry cream. Their portions are small and manageable. I enjoy best going with someone else and ordering three or four things and sharing. In the French style, nothing is overly sweet or heavy. This is not a place for thick cakes or sickeningly sweet icing. The flavors are subtle, interesting, and always changing.
