Great little local shop in Teaneck. I discovered their napoleon cake and continue to order this cake for most celebrations. It's a flaky, buttery, puff pastry topped with fruit. Sweetness of the cream is not overly sweet so older members of my family prefer this cake since it's light and guilt free way to enjoy a sweet treat.

Katayfi baklava.... so delicious

So happy I found this bakery through my church they were making Vasilopita for. This is a no frills, family owned, traditional Greek immigrant family bakery that sells very traditional Greek goods and traditional American as well. Everything is fresh and the Greek items are authentic. They sell the BEST kourambries I've ever had and their baklava is insanely good!!!! Very tasty, traditional and very well priced.

This should say 2021. Sure doesn't look like it.

Our church did a fundraiser and they ordered Vasilopita (our new years tradition) from Athens Bakery. We are very disappointed that it was stale. We never got to finish it to see who would get the lucky coin. It didn't even look appetizing. The tsoureki we had at Easter was ok though. I forgot to mention that my youngest son found a fingernail in the vasilopita.

I've been coming here for birthday cakes since we were kids. I got married in a very intimate ceremony this past month and asked them to do our cake. The owner and his wife did a beautiful job for about 30 people. The cannoli cream flavor was out of this world. Everyone loved it. I cannot thank them enough for helping us and giving us a beautiful part of our wedding day. My only regret is not having a better picture of the cake from the actual reception.Thank you thank you!

It's located…read moreright near the railroad tracks on Maywood Ave. They have a small parking lot with limited spots. There's also street parking nearby. We came in for lunch on a Friday afternoon. It wasn't busy and we were able to seat ourselves wherever we wanted. The restaurant is small, but cozy, and has a local/family-owned feel to it. The interior is simple and charming; it almost feels like you're eating in someone's dining room. The menu has all of your traditional Greek favorites like gyros, souvlaki, lamb shank, fresh seafood, cold dips, moussaka, etc. It's BYOB! We ordered... *Complimentary pita bread and hummus - The pita was soft and fluffy. The hummus was creamy and rich. The combination of sun dried tomatoes, garlic, and chickpeas made the dip earthy, nutty, and tangy. *Kalamarakia $15.95 - I'm picky with calamari, but the chef got this right! The coating was light, crispy, and fried to a perfect golden brown color. It didn't mask the taste of the squid. The squid was tender (but not rubbery) with a subtle sweetness. The fresh lemon and marinara sauce added a tangy zest to the overall flavor. *Grilled Chicken Pita Sandwich with rice $14.95 *Gyro with fries $14.95 (All gyro sandwiches come with lettuce, tomato, onion, tzatziki sauce, and your choice of rice or fries). These were HUGE, filling, and packed with tons of protein! Both the grilled chicken and gyro meat were flavorful and marinated in a blend of herbs and spices. The tzatziki sauce was refreshing and citrusy. The pita bread was warm and soft. I could only finish half of mine and packed the rest to eat later. Our server was really friendly and attentive. The food came out within a reasonable amount of time. Don't sleep on Angelo's!

Unlike many restaurants today, Nisiotis Taverna had pure virgin olive oil on the table in a clean white bottle which we used generously and thankfully to dip our bread into. Yum! The spreads were excellent and the pita was toasted just right and served warm. The pita was chewy, warm and well toasted. The lamb chops were grilled exactly to requested temperature and seasoned correctly. The fries that came with that were warm and crispy. Lightly sprinkled with dried oregano for that Greek flavor. The branzino was filet fresh and grilled to perfection. But I would suggest getting it with vegetables instead of potatoes, which were fine but not particularly special. They also had "off the menu" selection of sea food which were recommended and fresh. The black bass was truly as fresh as I've had in NJ, but slightly, just slightly, undercooked: A minute undercooked. This was actually good for me but some may recoil a little. Otherwise it was perfection. If you know how to eat fish, I'd ask for it whole, instead of fillet'd. The dandelions that came with it was over cooked but the mild flavor was a good compliment to the black bass. They also had large anchovies, which grilled properly would be awesome. The service was spot on but not intrusive but it wasn't busy because of our late lunch. The ambience and decor was charming and really helped to focus our minds towards beautiful beaches and warm breezes of the Greek islands, where this kind of food would be served. Overall a very good experience but slightly expensive. There was nothing wrong with the food per se but slight improvements here and there could make it fantastic: For example, vegetable was over-cooked, and black bass was just slightly undercooked. Regardless, I recommend this quaint Taverna! The owner's care and friendliness topped the scale from a four to a five star. Realistically, it is a 4.5 or 9/10.

There were a lot of empty tables awaiting reservations. The complimentary bread and olive tapenade were also appreciated. We really enjoyed the food: spanakopita ($20) was tasty with a very flaky Phyllo and a fresh salad with grape leaves and chunks of feta, things you don't normally see in a side salad. The pork souvlaki platter ($22) with fries was also very tasty. Their menu is not super big but adequate options. If you have a special occasion, this is also a good spot but be sure to make reservations and know it's a relatively small place. The atmosphere and decor are very comfortable though it can get very loud if there are a lot of customers (and these customers seemed to be enjoying their experience!); perhaps because of the small place and acoustics. BYOB. They had an entrance in the back so they likely have a small parking Iot there? But we found parking around the corner, as there's no 2 hour parking limit on weekends.

The inside evoked a cozy and warm vibe with Greek music playing throughout. Outdoor dining is available, weather permitting. Their menu features an array of traditional Mediterranean dishes, offering a variety of soups, appetizers, salads, sandwiches, meats from the grill, seafood cooked various ways, and entrees cooked from the oven. Day 1: Escape from NYC to Bear Mountain and Westchester County…read more Eatery 1 of 2 I had the good fortune to visit New York City and stay with a friend from grad school who lives on the Upper West Side. At times, I felt like I was imposing, but I was reassured that I wasn't. With having lodging in such a great location, I decided it would only be fair for me to take care of the meals and some sightseeing. As it happens, I got a bodacious deal on a rented econobox at La Guardia ... for a price that you would get in the sticks elsewhere. I've driven around the Tri-state area before and thought that this would facilitate seeing things beyond what the MTA pass allowed. In driving across the stately George Washington Bridge at around noon, I knew that we would be eating in New Jersey. One stop would be the village of Ridgefield Park, a place in which I've had immigrant relatives who bordered on sitcom material. The plan was to go to a popular cheesesteak place that I had bookmarked, but it was closed. I couldn't believe it. So I continued to drive down Main Street. I saw a Greek restaurant and something about it was familiar. It was that I had bookmarked it based on a Yelp friend's review. The eatery is named Sparta Taverna. It's an unassuming place inside a brick storefront. Once inside, it's comfortable and unpretentious. We sat about two-thirds of the way toward the back. The server introduced herself and was very accessible at all times. The menu at Sparta is quite vast. There are two pages, and then there is also a separate lunch menu with specials. At any rate, I ordered a chicken souvlaki platter that, in addition to the skewers, came with a Greek salad and the potatoes how I like them. My friend ordered a more traditional gyro as well as a small side salad. I really liked my meal, as all of its pieces tasted like they should have ... and I eat Greek food whenever the opportunity presents itself. What was on the platter vanished fairly quickly. My friend liked the gyro and the side salad, but then my friend isn't as emotive when it comes to giving a yay or nay to food. At the beginning of the meal, we were brought small pita triangles surrounding a dollop of hummus. I really appreciated that. The prices at Sparta are very fair. The variety offered is very good. Even though the desserts looked tempting, we skipped on them to move on with the day. As you move away from the restaurant and this small hamlet, you come to realize that you are very close to New York City, given that one is cautiously avoiding ramps that would put you on the tolled direction of the George Washington Bridge back to the city. We would be heading up the Palisades Parkway in New Jersey. On the way out, I stopped to take a few photos. I noticed that there were photos in which Guy Fieri gave Sparta Taverna his seal of approval. I almost didn't need to see that because I find Guy Fieri grating and that he veers toward being a big "cafone." But, then, I've ended up at eateries that have been on his show without knowing that in advance, so history is repeating itself. I could definitely eat here again and recommend it. That said, Sparta Taverna gets 4 high and solid stars.

Located on busy Broadway in Elmwood Park, we decided on our Christmas Eve dinner at this family-owned establishment. The reservation was easily made via OpenTable. Upon arrival as first-timers, my partner and I were greeted by the owner at Taverna Mykonos and got a table for two right away in the corner where the tables are close to each other inside their cozy, very dim-lit, and elegant dining room with Christmas music playing throughout. There's a full bar with an extensive selection of Greek wines, with approximately 80% sourced from regions across Greece, as well as other excellent choices from California and Spain. The menu featured both authentic traditional Greek dishes along with many other options. The restaurant bakes all of its bread as well as its desserts. Traditionally, the meat of choice served during a Greek Christmas meal is lamb and pork. For starters, we decided to share Keftedes (Greek-style seasoned meatballs served with tzatziki dipping sauce). For our main meal, we opted for Baby Roasted Lamb with roasted potatoes and Lamb Shank with tomato orzo. Complimentary bread started our meal, and we washed it down with a sparkling spring water product of Greece. Complimentary cookies were given to each table at the end of the meal. The food was fresh, using quality ingredients, tasty, and well-presented. We enjoyed the keftedes very much, as they were moist and complemented well with the tzatziki dipping sauce. The portion was reasonable. However, we were disappointed with the Baby Roasted Lamb, as it was mostly bones with only some pieces of edible meat. Service is professional, friendly, and fast. The cost is comparable to the area. Exchanged a few words with the owner, George, about the old neighborhood in Astoria. Opa!
