While we were eating our starters, I had a watermelon hibiscus margarita, literally TO DIE FOR! Then I paired a chile pineapple mango margarita with al pastor enchiladas blancas, sooo GOOOD! On a Thursday afternoon, there was no wait and maybe half the tables were full. Limited HH menu. Tried: complimentary chips and salsa: chips are v thin and break easily - generous portion but most of it are broken pieces lol. prefer the thicker tortilla chips - Al Pastor Taco $4: meat was marinaded very well and it was tasty! - Churros $6: ughhhh this was freshly fried and heavenly. Dipped in the dulce de leche... much better than the chocolate (bitter aftertaste). What an amazing experience! Went to celebrate my son's first birthday with family and I am stunned at how good this place was. The biggest star of the meal was our server Alex R, I am struggling to find a better experience I have received from someone serving our table. She was extremely knowledgeable for us first timers and made sure our large table was taken care of at all times. The kids all got plates of fruit without anyone asking which was great as the littlest didn't want to try the apps. The food, amazing all of it! The drinks were delicious and balanced, the appetizers were superb we got the ceviche, ahi tostada, and guacamole. The mains were also great the food all came out in time and was the perfect temp. When it was all done we left satisfied and not feeling over full or weird in the way Mexican can sometimes. This place is a gem! Can't wait to go back really soon. read more

If it wasn't for Manny, we'd probably give this place a lower rating for its service. Manny caught on with the lack of service and stepped up and beyond to make my husband and I's visit enjoyable. The food was good, very flavorful but (personally) I don't think it had enough textures to the bite. We got the creamy shrimp taco, tuna tostada and birria taco. For drinks we got the margarita flight and the Bienvenido flight ($25). For a Saturday night around 5pm, it wasn't busy. Just note that it is in a shopping center and the advertisement sign for it is really small (a bit hard to find considering the color combination). Came here on a Friday evening to celebrate a friend's birthday. As we were seated at our booth, we were pleasantly surprised to find a cute candy setup in the center -- a fun and festive touch! The booth was a bit tight for our party of six, but we made it work. Service was prompt -- we got our drinks and appetizers quickly. I ordered the short rib and enchiladas, which were flavorful and satisfying. While the sauce didn't taste homemade and the portions were a bit on the smaller side (especially with the small tortillas), everything still tasted great. Same goes for the Al Pastor taco it comes with four and a side of Mexican rice and refried beans. The Branzino adobe is cooked to perfection, and comes with a side salad. For dessert we had flan with a side of vanilla ice cream. The wife and I had pineapple mango fresco and cactus pomegranate fresco, respectively. The staff is very friendly and checked on us frequently. Thanks Jonathan! The place is modern and dark lit. It's very nice and on the upscale of things. Huge private parking lot shared at a plaza. An improvement is better dishwasher service. Our glass had lint all over them so we had to wipe the inside and outside. I wanted to share our experience from last night's reservation at 6:15 PM (Thursday) --though "experience" might be generous, since it mostly involved sitting and wondering if invisibility had suddenly become our superpower. We arrived on time, were seated promptly, and then... nothing. No greeting, no water, no "we'll be right with you." Just radio silence for a solid 15 minutes. The only sign of life was someone dropping off chips and salsa (which, credit where it's due, were excellent). But after that? Crickets. The restaurant wasn't busy. There were plenty of servers walking around--some even made eye contact as they passed our table, which happened to be right next to the kitchen. So unless your staff has mastered the art of selective blindness, they absolutely saw us. And still, nothing. Before we left, I informed the front desk--very politely, mind you--that we were heading out. I let them know no one had acknowledged us, and that we had a movie to catch. I figured I'd do the staff a favor and break the news gently, since they seemed so committed to pretending we didn't exist. It's frustrating, especially since this isn't my first disappointing visit. I've written reviews before, hoping things might improve, but clearly, consistency is key--and not in a good way. I'm not sure what's going on with your front-of-house operations, but it's not working. Guests shouldn't have to beg for attention, especially when they're seated in plain view. read more

This review is a reflection of my first time dining here so things may have changed since. La Popular is a beautiful restaurant located in the newer Porter Ranch outdoor mall known as The Vineyards. This is the perfect place to host a birthday party or any kind of gathering because the ambiance is rather nice. Their patio features an outdoor fireplace and we all know my poor circulation benefits from something like this. I'm impressed by how the food and drinks are presented. The cocktails look gorgeous. One thing that sets them apart is their salsa appetizer which is like a flight of their different salsas but presented in a unique way. While this is a Mexican restaurant, some of the food tasted like it could almost be Indian. Maybe because of the amount of cumin? Regardless, the food was pretty tasty. Last night was my second time at La Popular and I must say it was perfect. We sat at the bar and ordered the Spicy Pineapple mango chile margaritas which did not disappoint!!! The mango puree tastes SO fresh in the margarita and all the flavors are perfectly mixed. SO GOOD I had to have two. We weren't too hungry so we shared a chips and guacamole bowl and the three tacos plate. I had the ribeye taco and half of the chicken and I must say the ribeye was perfect, if I go back I will get all three as ribeye just for me. I also LOVE rice and beans and the beans were so good I was eating them with my chips more than the guacamole lol. In the past the first time I came to this restaurant was at night and it was very dark and dimly lit, however yesterday evening we arrived at about 6pm and it was nice and bright with the light from the windows. Love the food, but delivery was a letdown I've been to La Popular many times and absolutely love their food--it's consistently delicious, and the in-restaurant experience has always been great. Unfortunately, my recent delivery order was a big disappointment. The $9 salsa sampler came in tiny containers, way smaller than what you get when dining in--more like the free sauce cups you see at other places. Worse, my $26 taco order was missing the side of rice and beans. They refunded only $20 without even offering to send the missing food. That's just poor service. Still a fan of the food, but I won't be ordering delivery again anytime soon. read more

My first time visiting this establishment. It was a busy Friday night. It took a little long to be seated. Apparently they had called us when the table became available, but the cell phone service was weak, and we waited outside in the cold for longer than necessary. Maybe pagers for seating might help. Our hostess was friendly and welcoming. Our server Mario was the same. We got good service. The atmosphere was lively. The place was nice, kinda classy. Casual attire is appropriate, but the atmosphere was not too shabby. Was kinda bummed I couldn't get the Mexican coffee cocktail I wanted because of some odd detail about the bar not being "an open bar". So I just cancelled the order and asked for a regular coffee. My server made a recommendation for a substitute, and I accepted. When I got the recommended cocktail, I sensed it was a cold beverage but I was asking for a hot coffee cocktail. My server apologized, and let me keep the cocktail and waived the cost. It was actually a tasty drink, just not the hot cocktail I was craving for a chilly Friday night after waiting outside in the cold for longer than necessary. My coffee was hot, but not very tasty. I acknowledge that people don't typically order coffee on a Friday night, but that's the part of the difference between 4 and 5 stars. My blanco enchiladas were SO GOOD. MOUTHWATERING. Everyone I came with was pleased with the food. My Father complained about the snug seating. He didn't feel like he had much space. He definitely kept stepping on my shoes under the table, and he said it was irritating how much his seat moved based on the movements of the people in the booth behind him. He was pretty irritated. La Popular is pretty popular. Full house, seating was not easy, but not impossible. Reservations are not possible, so you have to be present to request a table. The shopping center itself is huge with many seductive businesses. There's a play area outside for kids that looked very popular too. Large parking lot. The entire shopping center is definitely worth coming back for. And I look forward to my next visit to La Popular. read more
