When a restaurant is this popular, having no reservation system is a serious drawback. Our party of six--four adults and two children--arrived at 5:30 p.m. to celebrate a birthday and a wedding. We put our name on the waitlist and weren't seated until 6:10. It was 99 degrees outside, and waiting in the sun and heat for 40 minutes was uncomfortable, especially since we had arrived early. I understand that popular restaurants can get busy, but guests shouldn't have to spend nearly an hour waiting outside. A reservation system would make the experience much more convenient and would likely bring me back more often. This is a solid restaurant - good but not great. If it was just down to food I'd rate 3.5. I ordered fish tacos and table side guac to share. The tacos were good but certainly not the best I've had. However the portion size was much larger than expected, so I was happy to have some leftovers. The table side guac was really great. This was our first time here. A friend, who lives locally, said it was her favorite. We arrived at 5:30 on a Saturday with a group of 6. We had to wait about 20 mins. They don't take reservations! The inside is decorated so fun! Lots of cool Mexican art as well as fresco paintings. It was packed at 5:30! Not a spot at the bar. It's small cozy and quaint while also being fun and festive. We got the table side guac, which was great, as well as two molcajetes for the table. They were the best I've ever had! We got some margaritas, both blended and regular. They had a good skinny marg. Sol y Luna is a quaint, high energy (and volume) neighborhood gem featuring a roving mariachi band, colorful decor, and the kind of menu we've come to expect from longstanding Mexican restaurants in LA. The petit bar area was full, so we grabbed a table in the dining area, which was at 70% capacity by 5:00. Tons of families and good vibes. Mike, our waiter, was cheerful, attentive, and helpful. Generous margaritas were perfect after a long workweek. Our table of four agreed that the light, crispy tortilla chips with tableside prepared guacamole was among the best we've had. Flavor bomb. The appetizer was meh. Nachos, taquitos, chicken wings, flautas, mini tacos, and a sope pretty melted into a pile of mediocrity. Chicken wings were crispy and decent. Comparable to the better quality frozen, breaded wings from Costco. The real stars were the tamales and churros. I love the atmosphere. It is smaller than it looks so during busy times I may suggest checking to see if they take reservations. I ordered a chicken taco and it was very full (lots of chicken) the refried beans are good. Salsa was okay. My husband really liked it, the flavor was different, I didn't care for it. Save me from getting filled up . We did get guac made at the table - good. My sister ordered beef tacos but it came shredded and she didn't like them. Had such a great experience at Soy y Luna! Everyone ordered something different, including the guacamole, carne asada, enchiladas, and quesadillas, and everything was delicious and full of flavor. I have been coming to Sol Y Luna for years, although it has been quite a while since my last visit. It was so great to be back! I met five other friends for lunch on a recent Friday and the restaurant was packed! I do not think that there has ever been a time that I have been at the restaurant when it wasn't full! When I arrived, tableside guacamole was already being prepared. Since it is always a go-to for me, I was happy that the group had ordered. One of my friends wondered if anyone would be interested in sharing a molcajete, which is my all-time favorite at Sol Y Luna, so needless to say, I didn't even look at a menu. There is a valet lot behind the restaurant. If you are up for walking a block west to Corbin, you can find completely free street parking. Otherwise, there are meters along Ventura Boulevard. Although every table in the restaurant was filled, the service was great and our table was checked on throughout lunch. We had a fun time, and everything was delicious. read more

Every time I eat here, I enjoy my time and meal. The hostess was so kind and allowed us to sit in the room we asked for. When we were sat, our wonderful server Ashely greeted us and took our appetizer and drink orders very quickly. The service was an easy 10/10. Now the food, again no doubt, amazing. The portions were great and the flavor is unreal! We got the guacamole, queso, grilled chicken burrito, and Mochaca burrito. All so good and filling. My grilled chicken in the burrito had a perfect, grilled smoky taste accompanied by the fresh pico and avacado. So so good. And the guac is perfect every time. So flavorful and delicious. I came here to celebrate a friend's birthday, and unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing. Our party of five was initially seated at a small booth with an additional chair squeezed onto the end, despite there being a table near the bar that appeared to comfortably accommodate five people. We politely asked if we could be moved to a more appropriate table, but the interaction that followed was unnecessarily unpleasant. The food and drinks also took a very long time to arrive. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, and I want to acknowledge that she was doing her best. However, the manager's behavior significantly impacted our experience. While we were seated near the bar, she told us to "watch our mouths," and afterward continued to give our group what felt like unfriendly and confrontational looks for the remainder of our visit. Extremely uncomfortable. For a birthday celebration, we expected a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere, and unfortunately, that was not our experience. Based on this visit, we would not return. If you're looking for Mexican food in the Valley, I would personally recommend Casa Vega instead. We've had a much better experience there in terms of both atmosphere and service. read more

Thankfully, that's not a problem here.I also love that they prepare the guacamole tableside. It's always fun to watch, and it doesn't get much fresher than that. Over the years, I've also run into quite a few famous people here, which adds a little extra excitement to the experience. Another thing I look for is mole. It's one of the most complicated and time-consuming Mexican recipes to make, and I absolutely judge a restaurant by whether they can pull it off. Today I went with tacos. I'm never on Yelp and have never given a bad review in my life, but I had an extremely disappointing experience at Sol Y Luna in Tarzana, especially because of how management handled a simple billing issue. I ordered a $9 margarita and asked for it skinny. Instead of simply modifying the drink, I was charged an additional $9.50 for the change, which was never disclosed to me when I ordered. I was also charged for a drink/item that I did not order, resulting in my Skinny Margarita being 18.50 rather than 9.00. Their argument was that making the margarita skinny results in them using lime juice -- how is a squeeze of lime $9.50? That's one expensive lime. Had I been told there would be a $9.50 upcharge beforehand, I obviously could have decided whether I wanted it. What really made the experience unacceptable was the response from management. When we politely tried to explain the issue, either a worker or manager, Shilee, was dismissive and walked away from us while we were still speaking. We weren't looking for an argument--we simply wanted someone to listen to what happened and address a charge we disputed. Mistakes on a bill can happen. What matters is how a restaurant handles them. Being charged for something I didn't order, receiving an undisclosed upcharge, and then feeling completely dismissed by management turned what should have been a nice dinner into an incredibly frustrating experience. I will not be dining here again and neither will any of my family, friends, or anyone I associate with. read more

I must update my review for this place, they earned it! I've tried the molcajete and tableside guacamole at other Mexican restaurants and nothing comes close to the taste and quality of sol y Luna! If you're on a diet or eating low carb they offer grilled veggie options instead of rice and cold veggies for dip vs their delicious chips :) Everything on the menu is delish! We came here last night to celebrate my wife birthday with her family. We called ahead to make reservations. This restaurant has valet parking for $10 in the back or there street parking, I chose street parking but it was only mad at 1 hour so I used the valet afterwards. We arrived on time and checked in but it still took about fifteen minutes to be seated. It's very compact and feel small inside of this restaurant. Our waitress was Martha and for the most part she was okay. It took three attempts for her to bring me my soda since she kept forgetting. She also forgot to bring me back my refill until I had to ask twice. I had almost the same issue yesterday at another restaurant, my drink was just a soda. I got the shrimp ceviche, chicken wings and my wife got the chicken mole. Her brother got the carne asada burrito. The food was okay but the service was slow with our waitress. What made the occasion special was that they'll sing happy birthday to you and give you a hat to wear so other people will know it's your birthday. read more

We are not from the area and was extremely frustrated with the slow-moving traffic and hours from our destination. Sol y Luna is one of those rare finds as passing tourists and we were impressed. The restaurant took me back to the old Mexican restaurants of my youth with the large mural, decorative booths, and dark ambiance. I was told that the table side guac was a must, so I ordered that, a chicken tamal, and a side of rice. The tamal came with a side scoop of guac, so I got to taste the difference between the fresh guac and the 3-oz scoop on the menu. The table side was so worth it. When I cut into the tamal, the fresh corn smell really hit me, and the masa was very moist. I somehow ended up with mole on top, and it was a bit too earthy for me. The side rice was cooked perfectly and was a nice addition to my meal. The restaurant got busy very quickly as the lunch crowd arrived, so service felt a little inattentive. I never got a water refill and no one checked in with me between bringing my meal and bringing the check. I don't know if it was that I was sitting alone or if I was just so quiet that they forgot about me, but it would have been nice if they had asked if I needed anything else. Would I return, though? Right away, we were greeted with complimentary chips and salsa, which were super fresh and flavorful. We also ordered a small side of guacamole, and it totally hit the spot. I tried the coconut blended margarita and it was a 10/10. The texture was smooth and icy (not watery or chunky like some places), and the coconut flavor was delicious without being overpowering. For our mains, I ordered the coctel de camaron, which was fresh and full of lime & veggies, and my husband had the chile Colorado burrito, which he enjoyed, but felt it was over-salted (which is saying a lot, because he is obsessed with salt). The food overall was tasty, and our server was friendly and attentive. That said, we did notice that our food took much longer to come out compared to other tables around us. It seemed like our order may not have been put in right away, which was a bit of a bummer. Still, the atmosphere was fun; the decor is colorful and festive, and there was upbeat music playing that added to the lively vibe. We ordered the Molcajete Sol y Luna for Two. Unfortunately, the quality of the meat was very disappointing. The steak was extremely chewy and had a lot of tough connective tissue, making it difficult to enjoy. For a dish where the meat is such an important part of the meal, I expected much better quality I do want to give credit where it's due--the customer service was very good, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, good service couldn't make up for the quality of the food. Driven past Sol y Luna for yearssss and finally decided to check it out on a Sunday afternoon. It's carpeted, dark and electic (& slightly kitschy) with lots of fake plants and things hanging off the ceiling and lighting fixtures. You can tell it's been there for a looooong time without much renovation/remodeling. (How many restaurants still have carpeting??) The starter of chips and salsa were delicious. Chips were still warm and didn't have much salt which I prefer. The salsas were yummy & spicy. Our server was kind and we didn't have to wait too long for our food. The first menu item we got was a 2-item plate of a chicken tamale and chicken enchilada. LOTS of chicken in the tamale and enchilada. Enjoyed the flavors especially paired with the accompanying rice & beans. The second item was the tostada salad and it was a hard pass. You'd get a better tostada salad at El Pollo Loco. It was less than half full. And even that was mostly lettuce. Barely any of the ingredients you actually want. And the shell tasted stale. Aside from the 50% 'yum-rate' on the food, another reason we may not return is the carpeting. We saw several employees sweeping the carpet, smh. Do you know how much dust flies up by sweeping carpet?? And they were doing it right next to customers eating. A few customers looked at the staff with disapproving expressions. I saw one woman put her hand on top of her margarita so the floor's dust wouldn't land into it. **DO NOT SWEEP CARPET WHILE CUSTOMERS ARE EATING!** ***They should get rid of the carpet entirely and replace the flooring with Spanish tile.
