This was a solid option. I had the enfrijoladas, which were a hearty dish with rice and tortilla with cheese and vegetables covered in a black bean sauce. They added in a complimentary simple butternut squash soup. I also had a Mexican chocolate to drink, which was subtly spiced and not too sweet. The food definitely needed the salsas they served alongside, but was otherwise decent. It was a bit more expensive than I was expecting at about $25 for the meal after tax and tip.

Absolutely delicious Oaxacan food. I've always wanted to visit Oaxaca and this place definitely gave us a taste of what it will be like. The restaurant is small with a few tables but it wasn't crowded when we went for lunch on a holiday Monday. My boyfriend and I shared the mole poblano, mole oaxaqueño, and molcajete. The mole dishes came with rice, beans, and warm tortilla and I also got a small horchata. Everything came out piping hot and fresh, bursting with flavor with every bite. Nothing was too spicy but if you like sweeter things, I would highly recommend the mole poblano.

This place deserves 10 stars! I found this place on Apple Maps guides and it was one of the highlights of our entire NYC trip. They immediately greeted us and set up a table for us 2. As a welcome appetizer they give you a Oaxan style bowl of Chips with different "guisados" on top. Our server was a lady who is actually from Oaxaca, and made us feel taken care of the entire time we were there. We had Mole Poblano - delicious with Chicken and Chilaquiles with Green Sauce, those were a little spicy but also delicious. Would recommend this place to anyone for authentic Mexican food. On top of that they gave us a little hand drawn booklet that talks about them, their story and how they have helped many people in the community.

Some of the best Mexican food I've found in the city. Serving authentic Oaxacan food, La Morada does a wonderful job in all aspects of the dining experience. Service is friendly and warm, like having a meal at a friend's house. The food is always fresh, with salsa and a wide variety of molés made in house. The meal even starts with a sample of sauce and chips at no cost. Going above and beyond, La Morada also helps provide for the immigrant community. They give their extra bread to local families in need, sharing their success with the neighborhood. You simply must give this restraunt a try! I can't recommend it enough.

Let's face it...the hardest thing for some of us (especially in NY) is looking for a good Mexican restaurant serving decent food or one that's innovative with their menu. And for those reasons- this place fits the profile. With a modest and simple feel, this spot combines authentic Mexican food with some twists, a laid back and colorful space- right in the heart of The South Bronx in Mott Haven. This restaurant stands out and attracts local art gallery owners (yes...South Bronx has several), millennials, regular folks, then folks like me- who want a piece of it too. I'm a sucker for a joint with history, charm, character and stories. This place isn't just copying the Mexican restaurant scene you see everywhere else. These guys created a unique and casual place- with an unpretentious vibe. Plus it speaks to the changes that are happening right now in our United States of A. Welcome to La Morada! It's easy to see why the restaurant is popular. La Morada turn what they touch into pure gold. Okay, maybe not real gold- but the place is interesting. With in-your-face purple walls, local art display and Mexican pottery design- it is easily one of the most eye-opening Mexican restaurants I've been to. There's something to suit everyone on the menu- from Tamales, Burritos, Tacos, soooo many Vegan and Vegetarian dishes, Natural Juices and so much more. I'm not sure how other foods fair out- but 3 small Tacos run you at $10- with a $5 up charge for cut up shrimp pieces- albeit juicy. Mom enjoyed her Quesadilla with Carnitas. Passion Fruit juice for both was good. Not sure when I'll return to this side of South Boogie but if I am, I'll come back- because I know I wouldn't have to do somersaults just to get Vegan Mexican entrees. By the way...Marco was attentive and pleasant during our lunch.

This was excellent. I'm becoming more and more convinced that New York's Mexican scene is actually underrated, and this type of place is a good example of why. First visit, we started with guac, then got a side of mole, the tlayuda with steak, mole oaxaqueno with chicken, burrito with fried chicken, and cheese enchiladas their with green sauce. I really liked everything, but the biggest standout was the mole oaxaqueno, which was pretty spicy and incredibly delicious. The tlayuda was probably my second favorite, and I saw any number of other dishes on the menu and on other people's tables that I'd want to try as well. I'd have it behind Tlaxcalli as my favorite Bronx Mexican spot, but definitely worth returning to.

An impressively authentic-tasting Mexican restaurant, La Morada surprisingly has a whole section with vegan offerings. Each of them is absolutely delicious. I've had the Mole Verde, Enfrijoladas, and Enchilada de Vegetales, and would highly recommend all of them. Each bite is a treat and La Morada has perfected their black beans so that they're creamy and addicting. The decor feels very community-oriented. There are social justice graphics and signs around the restaurant. In the back is a lending library, so you can enjoy reading a poetry book with your meal and even take a book to read and then return. Also, the service is wonderful. A true gem in the Bronx. I look forward to returning many more times.

We (7 people) and made a reservation in advance and they were very accommodating. The owner's activist roots are immediately apparent in the decor. We ordered the cinnamon teas and coffees. They hit the spot on a wintery day- and the ongoing refills were quite generous. I can't speak as to the other entrees on the menu, but this place specializes in mole, and so that's what we got. The sauces were complex and flavorful. We even tried the vegan version which was delightful. The veggies were fresh, not frozen - which is more than I can say for some other popular Mexican spots in the Bx. We enthusiastically recommend this bright purple Oaxacan gem to anyone willing to travel beyond the limited parameters of Manhattan.

I was craving some good authentic Mexican food with vegan options for awhile now. My boyfriend and I decided on La Morada, not only because of the fact that they had options for us, but because they had vegan mole. We ordered tacos de hongos (mushroom tacos), a torta made with grilled vegetables and mole verde with grilled nopales (green mole with grilled cactus- comes with tortillas, rice and beans as a meal). The tacos came out first- within a few minutes. We were given a bottle of hot chile sauce and avocado sauce which went beautifully on the tacos. You could tell everything was prepped at the moment of our order because the onions were super raw (the type of crudo you want) in the tacos and freshness was just present in all the vegetables. Then came the torta and the mole. Again, all the vegetables were extremely fresh. The torta was huge! It contained beans, grilled onion, avocado, cilantro and the works. The mole made me tear a little. The nopales were grilled perfectly and the mole was made nicely and balanced. The tortillas served with everything were great. Definitely would recommend to anyone and would come again. They nailed everything and our server was knowledgeable about vegan food, so we could trust that our meal would be prepared properly. Also to note before this review gets wrapped up, the agua de chinola was epic, not too sweet. My recommended drink.

I haven't been here for a while (not exactly around the corner from my apartment), and it's still very solid. Guacamole: delicious, not the liquid shit you get elsewhere. Truly fantastic. Quesadillas with pork: not great; the ingredients - although fresh - didn't stay together. Tacos with carnitas and steak: both tasty. Torta with pork: phenomenal; you can't get a better torta anywhere else in the city... for just $7! Shrimp tacos: good. Taco bowl with spicy pork: yummy and plenty. Overall, I just wish they were closer to me....I'd probably go every week.

I love this place. The food is what I imagine food would taste like if I was Mexican and my mom was Mexican. They are super political, and socially active. This makes the food taste even better! I love stopping by and checking out the posters, pictures and notices. I have tried the gorditas, and tacos but am looking forward to the mole. Mole heaven in the Bronx, big portions and really nice and cheap. Get the info about whatever moles are ready to go for that day and just pick one, it will be good. I had the mole negro with pork spare ribs. Next, the molcajete is an enormous delicious meat bomb that will feed you for two meals. Try and double up on the chorizo. Nice homey atmosphere that makes you feel like you're at a hole in the wall in mexico. Next time, we are drooling to get pozole, guacamole, tortas as well. Easy to reach on the Bx15 from any of the 125th Street stops in Harlem, or a short walk from 3 Av-138 St on the 6. read more

I had to travel to New York City to find the most authentic mole in the U.S. La morada is a small establishment in the Bronx, and like its name says, its painted purple. It is run by the most humble people you will ever meet, just strike up a conversation and you will find out. They serve several types of mole daily, however they do run out, since they make limited quantities per day. They also will have a daily special, like a pork riblet stew in tomatillo sauce with zucchini that is just wonderful. But wait there's more!!!! The tortillas are made fresh, none of the cardboard crap you usually find in most Houston, strip mall tex mex joints. read more

If you want real AUTHENTIC fresh Mexican then this is place to go! The food is AMAZING I could eat there everyday. The staff are all wonderful and so friendly. The restaurant is so cozy I loved seeing local children's artwork on the walls it just has such a great feeling to it and I'm so glad I stumbled across this restaurant! read more

Everything was top notch delicious... like grandma's cooking. I had the ribs with black beans and rice with salad. OMG I was so satisfied, probably the best meal I had this trip and I went to some expensive places. Gotta say dont hesitate to come on ova to the Bronx my boos. Apparently they are known for their more exotic moles, but when I went in today they only had mole poblano, the most basic of the 5 or 6 that they offer. This seems to be an ongoing problem and probably one that they should address. Maybe have a mole of the day schedule that they stick to if making all of them consistently is a chore? Anyway, I decided to get the chicken enchiladas after my mole letdown and they were quite good. First, it is a bigger portion than most restaurants give you. You get 4 very stuffed tortillas covered in sauce, tomatoes, crema, and chopped avocado. Second, the chicken is good. Is seems to be marinated in some good stuff and then finished on the griddle to give it a bit of a char. It doesn't just taste like generic stew meat stuffed into tortillas. They come with a side of rice and beans and they give you extra salsas and crema on the side. Overall, a very good eating experience. read more

Really enjoyed the service here, the gentleman walked all the way out to the door to let is out and thank us for coming. The white mole with chicken was good but I think I need something more flavorful. The nutty since is creamy but mild in taste. The chicken was well cooked and tender, I got 2 big pieces with rice and beans and tortillas for $12. The flan was also yummy. I will definitely be going back for the other types of moles. read more

I love the owner Natalia! First time here and she is very friendly and down to earth. I came with my family and we had an amazing time. The owner even gave us a little history lesson about her town in Mexico and the name of the restaurant. She showed us a book about el arbol Tule. Overall great cultural experience and the food is genuinely Mexican and flavorful. Simple, unpretentious, and delicious. All staff were courteous and attentive; the atmosphere was chill- with books in the back to thumb while the aroma from the kitchen keeps you from being able to concentrate on anything else. Born and raised in Harlem in the 70's, and even living in Mexico for a while, the only Mexican food I could rely on was from my mom's kitchen - until now. To say the least, I've tried various Mexican restaurants over the years with some hits, but with many misses. However, the tacos from La Morada restaurant are as authentic tasting as I've ever tried. After buying a couple of beers in a store a block away, which the son of the owners pointed out to us, we settled in for dinner. Laura ordered a taco and I ordered a gordita for appetizers; in a word, superb. We were given mason jars for our beers. Laura ordered the mole poblano; I ordered a chile relleno. We've been to Oaxaca, and I can faithfully say that the mole of "La Morada" is as good as one we had in Oaxaca. A bit spicy, deeply chocolate-y, thick, fantastic. My chile was sublime. The rice and beans we were served were themselves wonderful. And the three tortillas we were each given were perfect for mopping up the mole and the chile's sauce. I ordered a Oaxacan hot chocolate, and it took me back to Oaxaca: rich in flavor, piping hot, with a hint of cinammon. As I carefully sipped my hot chocolate, the owner brought me a serving of pumpkin sauce, which was also simply perfect: imagine applesauce, same consistency, not sweet, but with just a hint of sweetness. Topping it all off, the family who runs the restaurant is very friendly. We conversed with the son and the daughter, and their mother then spoke to us at some length. And when we left, she held the door for us! Very highly recommended; this is a marvelous place to have a meal in a warm atmosphere. read more

This place is awesome. It's a small hidden gem in the Bronx. It's a family owned restaurant and it's delicious authentic Mexican cuisine. They deserve their Michelin recommendation. They make their own mole sauce which is very hard to find. I love this small local restaurant. The food is delicious and I felt like I was in Mexico while eating here. read more

This is the best Mexican restaurant in the South Bronx. Whenever I'm in the area I come here to eat. Every time. I haven't had a bad meal in this restaurant and I've gone through the whole menu. Love their Oaxacan mole and molcajete, pretty much everything on their menu is amazing, one of the best places for Mexican food in the city/Bronx that's cheap as well. Super friendly staff and a very casual vibe. Def must check out this place, truly authentic Mexican/Oaxacan flavors. Again a gem and will keep coming back. read more

The best, most complex mole sauce I've ever enjoyed. I got the spicy one whose name is too complicated for a Gringo to recall. Excellent pico de gallo and guacamole as well. Would have enjoyed a Corona with it but no alcohol is served here, the only negative of this family run jewel of a restaurant. read more

Best traditional Mexican food you'll find in New York City. If you like mole, you have no choice but to order it. I'd suggest the Pampazo for something a little different (massive "sandwich" with chorizo, potatoes, and cheese (some avocado too) smothered in mole (get the dark chocolate one)). Also love the quesadillas and burritos for an incredible price. I've been going once a week, and Morada Miercoles is a tradition that I hope never dies... read more

Lovely little place perfect for lunch or dinner. One of the few restaurants that has tostadas on the menu, which I had to try. It was tasty and I'm glad I ordered it! Prices are also very reasonable so you can try multiple things. Hurry before everyone in the tri-state area finds out about this place. It's a real gem and the staff is warm and welcoming. read more

The food is good very authentic but I have to say the prices are a lil steep considering the small portion size and the neighborhood . We asked to have a taste of one of their moles before committing to it and said no we had to either buy the taste or fully commit to it , in the city at any restaurant they would gladly do it. I gave three chances to this place and although is not bad and love their whole concept I don't tHink I would come back . Sorry but you can get a better deal for your buck else where . read more

You seriously can't go wrong with La Morada. This family-owned restaurant has the best Oaxacan food in NYC. So many choices of mole, you'll have to come back to try all of them and the rest of the menu! Also, best horchata I've had. And the owners are some of the sweetest and nicest people you'll ever meet. Can't say enough good things about this place. read more

They gave ample lime and sauces to pair as needed. Prices felt reasonable. This place is as good as it gets! Family run and top-notch authentic Mexican food, plus they keep a lovely lending library that you're welcome to borrow from (or add to). I always get the Chile relleno, and it never disappoints. There are also a lot of inventive veggie and vegan options for those who don't eat meat. I'm not a big mole fan in general, so can't comment on it, but they do have the best beans I'e had in a while. Built around an artistic theme, with dishes intended to capture the nature of individual paintings, is creative, and bet of all, offered dishes of tremendous flavor variety. Not a dud in the bunch. Even if one does not go for the entire 7 courses, it is mandatory that the wine flights be sampled. The food here is absolutely delicious - we had the tlacoyo and mole blanco (with a base of pine nuts, it's a very flavorful and subtle dish), and highly recommend. The restaurant is a very welcoming place as well, brightly colored and with a view of the kitchen. And if that's not reason enough to go, the family who runs the business are very active locally in defense of immigrant rights, so patronizing their restaurant is a good way to give back to the community! read more

I've been to La Morada several times and have totally fallen in love. It has creative vegetarian options, which we appreciated. The chile relleno with white mole was outstanding as were the tostadas and the hot chocolate. I really appreciate the politically engaged social message that is present throughout the space as well. Please do not go to this restaurant- it harbors illegals aliens and helps them to evade the law. The owners need to be held accountable for the laws that they are breaking .
