This is hands down one of my new favorite spots in the Bronx. Upon walking in, you'll see the "Refugees Welcome" sign and upon entering, other immigrant rights signs. And the food is absolutely delicious. I had the potato flautas which I know I will be periodically thinking about, and wondering when I can next come back (a true litmus test of how good the food is). The staff was also super friendly and welcoming. Kushi vaa! Six mole sauces: poblano, verde, negro, Oaxaqueño, Pipián and blanco, how great is that? Most Mexican places have none, up here in the Bronx you get 6 huge flavors straight from Oaxaca. $15 gets you a large plate of chicken or pork slathered in any of those wonderful sauces plus rice, beans and freshly griddled little corn tortillas. It's a fine meal that should be immediately followed by a siesta :). We also tried the guac & house-made chips, excellent, $10. An al pastor sopes was a small pile of pork and avocado on a thick tortilla, a steal at $3, very good. English spoken here too, Marco S. is the friendly front-of-the-house family member. Ok it's a very small house lol. My only complaint about La Morada was that they overcooked my pork cutlet in the mole, was kinda tough argh. On my last trip to New York City I had three goals and one of them was to visit La Morada. I've been back home for a week already and still haven't stopped talking about my experience. Our meal started off with guacamole and salsa, both fresh and delicious. I ordered la ensalada de nopales. Most restaurants would use jarred cactus for this dish, but La Morada uses fresh, which makes all the difference (I could tell because there was someone in the back taking the spines out of the cactus paddles). I also got a hibiscus agua fresca. Where most restaurants would use powder, they use the actual flowers. My main dish was tender pork in green mole sauce with a side of beans and rice and tortillas. Ohhhh emmmmm geeee. So good. I also tried my friends chile relleno with mole poblano. It was equally the most amazingly delicious thing of ever tried. I could go on and on about how amazing this restaurant is and how much I want them to open in Palm Beach, Florida. This place deserves all the 5 star reviews it gets on Yelp. It's worth the short ride from Manhattan over the Willis Avenue Bridge in order to get some of the most authentic Mexican food in NYC. Tortillas are house made and make great burrito wraps or guacamole scoops. Incidentally, the guacamole is a must have. It has more mole options than any I've seen before. Service is very pleasant. They have good vegetarian and vegan options. These are listed as such on the menu (which is easy to read--the dishes are described). Like all good, authentic Mexican restaurants I've been to, the decor is purely functional. It's all about the food here. read more

I went to lunch at La Morada today, and was really impressed with the flavorful Oaxacan cuisine, and genuine staff. We arrived after a quick 5 minute walk from the 6-train, and it was a breeze getting there from the Upper East Side. I had heard about the fresh guacamole, so we chose to split that to start. The tortilla chips had that savory corn flavor that you look for, and the guacamole was great too. It had a lot of chunky texture and well-balanced flavor, and my only complaint was that it was heavy on the cilantro (I get that soapy taste, it's genetic). That's a personal preference though. Jalapeño is optional; I suggest it, as it doesn't add too much spice, but instead brings a pickled bright quality to the guac. Next up, I ordered the marinated skirt steak quesadilla. This was delicious too. The steak was pretty thin, and had that great sticky beef thing, and also areas of burnt umami flavor. I would consider stopping by after work to grab some takeout; this was really addictive. La Morada is known for their moles; they had 6 different ones (although they were out of 1 today) to try. I tried a bite of my husband's mole, and it was interesting and complex. So if you want to do the real Oaxacan thing, go for mole. The last compliment I can pay is to the service. Our waitress and waiter were both so correct in their service, but also so casually friendly. There was nothing forced or phony about their attitudes; you could tell they were happy to be there. Really great service and excellent food at this no frills, homey, hole in the wall. To start we ordered one sope, gordita, and tamale - each was authentic and delicious - a precursor to the story of the meal. The restaurant is known for their moles and have many varieties. I tried the mole blanco, something I have never seen offered elsewhere. It is made with pine nuts - very mild and creamy. My husband ordered the mole oaxaqueno, it had a great level of heat. You can order the dish with grilled chicken and the cut of meat is very thin, just the way I like it. The meal and experience was excellent, couldn't recommend this place more. After traveling to Oaxaca last year and really enjoying the cuisine, I came back to New York, searched for "Oaxacan cuisine," and came across this place. It took me a while to make it, but I'm really glad I did. The space is an extremely comfortable and homey spot that's also vibrant and brightly painted. The small library and the various posters around the space about current issues showcase a social conscience that gives the place a remarkable authenticity. (Space: 3.5/5). The authenticity continues onto the food, which is home cooking at its best. We had two entrees: a mole poblano with chicken and a mole blanco with pork. The mole poblano is nothing like at most of the Mexican restaurants in the city (which are heavy on the chocolate). Chocolate lightly sweetens the flavor but it's the smokiness of the chiles that really comes through in the dish. The mole blanco is too good for words, so you'll just have to try it. I also had an horchata, which was better than anything I've had in Mexico (Food: 4.5/5). What really makes La Morada is the service. The restaurant is run by a family and it's obvious how much they care about what they do. Every time we received a new dish, someone came over to ask how we liked it. Of course, all restaurants want you to enjoy their food so you come back. But it was clear that their interest in making sure we enjoyed the food was much more about being genuinely proud of their food than it was about generating new business. Liked the chicken tamales a lot: slightly spicy, rich corn flavor. Second only to the super rich tamales of the woman with a cart under the 7 train 82nd St. stop. (Been a while since I've been, so not sure she's still there.) Ordered the pork with mole negro: 3 pork ribs, bit dry around the edges with a moderately spicy sauce that was a bit harsh. Never had that experience with a mole before. Guess this is what the NY Times described as a "raw" flavor. The sides of rice and beans and tortillas were just ok--ended up not eating them and ordered a second tamale instead. Might give it another try to try the Times recommended mole Oaxaqueño. Loved the menu options. Menu catered to many dietary needs. I ascribe to a more vegan-esque lifestyle (meaning I will eat dairy if menu options/alterations seem scarce), but no need to alter here. Ate here a couple of weeks ago. Although I had read the rave in the New Yorker, I had not realized it was just a short walk away from a friend I was visiting until she mentioned it was her neighborhood favorite. I leapt at the opportunity to try it. Since I was eating alone I had to make the difficult choice of what to order that might be the most representative of the high praise they'd received. I decided on the molé as the most complex option, and selected the 6 chili version. I am not a connoisseur of Mexican food, but I quickly knew I was eating an exceptional rendition of this dish. The sauce was so rich, dense, and flavorful that I could not imagine how it could be improved upon. I have been reading other reviews that lauded the molés at La Morada, and I am happy to add my vote. I walk in, I felt as if I was in Oaxaca again.. Very homey.. The family that owns this are very welcoming. My Spanish is limited and the Matriarch was deep in conversation with my lunch companions.. She apologized for holding the conversation in Spanish.. 'No problema.. Entiendo mucho' Well I really didn't but got the gist of it.. She grinds her own moles. The food, drinks moles are the real deal.. Heading there for my next meal and a meal to bring home next week.. They are very involved in the community and education.. Just so utterly charming. I'm in love with the place, the staff, and of course, the food. From the moment we entered, my wife and I were welcomed by the warm and friendly staff. The place was full and the seating areas are pretty small, but they brought out some chairs for us to sit outside while we waited for a table. I'm a sucker for this type of hospitality. I'm always on the lookout for genuine Oaxacan fare, and I'm so happy I found La Morada. To start, the guacamole was as good as it gets. To be fair, any guac that's made with fresh ingredients is going to be out of this world. You can taste all of the ingredients: the onion, the cilantro, the tomatoes, and the creamy bits of firm avocado were all there. It just doesn't get any better than this. A must order. Next up, tamales. I just love corn. It's one of my favorite flavors. I love the idea of a culture being built around a food staple, and the variety of dishes that come from just one simple ingredient. These tamales were served piping hot, with all of that lovely corn flavor that I was seeking. Delicious. Then onto the mole poblano... the main event. The mole sauce was rich and not too sweet. I could taste the marriage of roasted peppers, cinnamon, and toasty chocolate (that's kinda polygamous). The best foods are the ones where you sop up the flavors, as I found myself twirling my fork full of chicken in its lovely bath of mole, savoring every bite. Ok, my gluttony didn't stop there. I had to try the enchiladas and the chile relleno, too. Both were a bit too spicy for the wifey, but I had enjoyed them no less. Might want to ask for a little less heat if you're watching your Scovilles. The service and staff were exceptional. They were informative and helpful in their recommendations on the menu and were attentive to our needs. I left feeling like I had just left the kitchen of the sweetest family in Mexico. By the way, value-wise, this place can't be beat. The food prices are beyond reasonable, like "cheap food cart" reasonable. I ordered a feast that could've easily fed 6 people for under $100. Never again !!! Our office order from them on a daily bases, more than 30 employees, every time we get our order few plates are crushed and there is food spilled all over, they always get stingy with there dishes and there sauces. The other day I went there to pick up my order since they're minimum delivery order is $20 which is absurd... When getting there the old lady was all Grumpy with sour face, I asked her about the sauces and she was trying to charge me $1 for each sauce !!!! We're talking about hot sauce !! I had the mole negro with pork spare ribs. Next, the molcajete is an enormous delicious meat bomb that will feed you for two meals. Try and double up on the chorizo. Nice homey atmosphere that makes you feel like you're at a hole in the wall in mexico. Next time, we are drooling to get pozole, guacamole, tortas as well.
